So if someone wanted to set up a music store online, the search engine would automatically exclude them while referring people to iTunes instead.

Why doesn’t the music industry create their own search engines? They’re easy enough to make; all the real work is in building the database.

It’s the ultimate goal. This has been known for a number of years. The entertainment cartels have a long-term plan to sell access to the internet as ‘package deals’ much like subscriptions to satellite and cable TV. So for your basic fee you can get to sites like Facebook and YouTube. For a bit more you can access a handful more sites and on and on. If you want full access to the unhindered web (and protocols other than http and mail) you pay an extortionate fee.
