True…. there was one group when I was in high school calling up homes when there was a ‘rash of mailbox destruction’ and asking parents “Do you know where your children are?” like just because they didn’t, their children had to be the ones doing this.

Once one parent got on the case of this group, telling them he was going to sue them, they stopped the phone calls.

They know their game and they’ve been playing it for quite some time. In most places, the penalty for violating copyright laws is rather large. They settle to expedite the process and to collect quickly so that they can be efficient at what they do. Bringing anyone to court could always leave them with nothing… they still have to provide evidence. If they only want a settlement, they don’t even need evidence, just contact information. It’s basically a corporation of bullies that have years of practice against one person.

Harassment, on the other hand, just isn’t as big of a deal. You can’t collect pain and suffering, or probably any money in damages. And then there’s the fact that it’d be one person against the experienced bullies.

Until their money-making scheme stops working, this is going to continue.
