Often it’s because the evidence is wrong and doesn’t go to ‘someone’ or the notifications have been sloppily done. Or, as in one case, the ‘defendant’ was paid off to accept it so it could ‘turn’ on others.
Default judgements can even be set aside by the court quite easily. They’re not exactly binding precedent. The case concerning the prenda honeypot was one such case, with a default judgement a year ago, and now Prenda is massively on the hook, and the defendant is free and clear.
