Streaming solutions are not the savior to the music industry, with the actual artist (as opposed to the label) and maybe even the streaming service both getting the raw end of the deal from a compensation standpoint. So an artist on Spotify gets $0.00043 per stream; which means a million streams in a month will still only generate $430. As for the streaming service end, Spotify has set royalty costs and expenses, so even as they keep growing their user base, their expenses grow equally. Musician/avid music listener here. I have been a music pirate most of my life, I grew up on napster. Paying spotify 9.99 has been one of the SMARTEST choices i’ve made PERIOD.

In a pinch I would cancel my netflix subscription LONG before my spotify account…

I’m sorry, but, Fuck Spotify. It’s a piece of shit. I’m fine with what’s there and besides. A music file is ultimately decided how one plays it and when one plays it. It is not to be decided by any music stream or radio.

Any and I do mean any, service that has four of the biggest uptight pricks backing it. Is a serious no-go for me.

Here’s the thing: Labels advance musicians the money for studio time. for their recordings – even live recordings need to be engineered and mastered from the board audio recordings. The musicians won’t see a penny until the label recoups. So, essentially by depriving the label of revenue, you are also depriving the musician even more. Yeah, you may hear of a band living high off the hog and read about their silly contract riders while on tour, but touring is the only way a band or solo artist actually makes money.

My ex is a multi-Grammy nominee in the Classical world, and he doesn’t see a cent in sales/streaming/track download royalties until his label recoups what they advanced him.
