What if the artist prefers a record contract?

Well, ironically, companies like Megabox will force the record companies to deal more honestly with artists, will force them to open up their purses to artists who deign to sign with them and not Megabox. It’s called “competition”.

Example: approximately a year after the Beatles did something unprecedented at the time, create their own record company, artists like the Rolling Stones suddenly found that their own record company, afraid that the group would start a record company too, was actually giving them good money for their work, which was the first time the record companies had deigned to do that for any of their artists, no matter how successful. Years later, once the major record companies had gobbled up all the means of distribution (late 90s), they went back to their previous business model of ripping off artists bigtime again. They didn’t have to pay them anymore. (Mick Jagger actually mentions this span of the golden years of getting paid in an interview.)
