It seems that hardly a month goes by without another malicious BitTorrent client appearing for download, hoping to dupe inexperienced and unsuspecting file-sharers into installing malware. As new kid on the block 'Get-Torrent' hits the web, we scratch below the surface to find the same old malware and the same old story.
Source: TorrentFreak, for the latest info on copyright, file-sharing and anonymous VPN services.

In January, we reported on two malware-loaded BitTorrent clients, Torrent101 and Bitroll. Both clients promised ‘high speed downloads’ but actually install a payload of malware onto the victim’s PC.

Unfortunately, several popular torrent sites carried advertising for these bad clients but thankfully, sites like The Pirate Bay saw the damage these things can cause and removed the adverts. TPB’s brokep wrote, “We’re getting a lot of email about people downloading torrent clients that are advertised on the site. Do not download them! We have put a ban for the ad companies to sell ads for these clients on our site.” Mininova and Snarf-it also blocked the adverts.

In February, we reported on yet another client, TorrentQ after a tip-off from the owner of BT-Junkie. Of course, this wasn’t a new client but the old one with a new name.

In April, in order to try to save unsuspecting file-sharers from installing malware, we ran Google Adword campaigns on the BitRoll, Torrent101 and TorrentQ websites, informing people of just how bad these clients are. Google apparantly doesn’t like to be associated with bad news and a few days later, Adsense adverts disappeared from the sites.

Disappointingly, we are now exposed to yet another ‘new’ bad torrent client. Get-Torrent is the latest in a sequence of malware-laden torrent clients, cloned from the same infected DNA as BitRoll, Torrent101 and TorrentQ. As can be seen from the client’s ‘skinning’ pages, these products are identical;

As we promised in our earlier posts, every time a bad client appears we will do our best to let the BitTorrent community know about it. Anyone thinking of installing a BitTorrent client should stay away from these products and install a free, clean client, such as uTorrent.

The popular BitTorrent site Snarf-it.org is down at the moment. Apparently some incompetent people at the datacentre messed up the server.

At Snarf-it.org we read this funny coverstory:

Where is Snarf-It? Your guess is as good as ours, at some point last night our database servers disappeared, and we really mean disappeared. The data centre where they are stored is not telling us anything and they are not replying to our calls or emails. We are at this point quite paranoid and thinking the worst (possibly that the servers have been siezed), we just don’t know. We are preparing to take flight to Havana where our new lives await us under Fidel’s regime (he want’s to open a Cuban torrent site to piss of the White House).

However, sources within the Snarf-it team confirmed to TorrentFreak that there is nothing to worry about. Snarf-it will be back as soon as possible, most likely this friday.

Update: The Snarf-it admins posted an update confirming our story

READ ALL ABOUT IT! Our downtime certainly has caused a few people to freak out, relax, take it easy. We haven’t been raided but we have lost our RAID so we are rebuilding some indexes and transferring them to the new server which has 6 x 36gb raptors in RAID 50, that should help us should this happen again. We plan to be back for the weekend, we can’t have you TorrentFreaks going cold turkey now can we!

Seriously though, thank you all for your concern and emails, when the shit hit the fan it was nice to have words of encouragement from our users, makes it all worthwhile :). Lastly we have decided that the Snarf does indeed have a place with Snarf-It still and as such we will install him back on the site as it’s mascot, see you soon!

Snarf-it.org, the torrent site that was created by the hardcore members of the Suprnovaforums died. The site recently reopened exactly 1 year after the famous BitTorrent site ‘suprnova.org’ died. It ressurected after the site was relocated to stay out of legal troubles. Snarf-it, was becoming a synonym for change over the past year.

Snarf-it went through a lot of changes, updates, extensions, revisions and additions. They were trying to give their users what they needed, but at the same time they didn’t manage to grow as big as they probably wanted. After the recent torrentsite attacks the Snarf team decided that it was time to move away from torrent hosting.

The Snarf-it.org domain, torrent database, the scripts and spiders are for sale now, so if your interested– .

The snarf-team now moves on with their sideprojects like imagehosting, blogger accounts, and a tech news site called wiredfire. Not really revolutionary stuff, but I’m sure that a part of the snarf/suprnova community will stay true.

Bye Snarf.

The site that’s created by members of the suprnova forum is back. And they still know where they came from, the site reopens exactly 1 year after suprnova.org died (how sentimental).

The server is relocated to a safer spot and there are some changes in personnel, but the furry thing still looks the same.

On December 19th 2004 at aproximately 8pm GMT Suprnova.org was taken offline and never seen again in it’s guise as a torrent site. The members of the original suprnovaforums built a new torrent site out of it’s ashes called Snarf-It.org. After a bumpy year culminating in snarf-it being offlined for the last 2 months it is about to be reborn on the anniversary of the death of Suprnova. Over 100,000 torrents, new look, new code and a new pair of furry balls.
Snarf’s missed you.

Check it out
