This is a new strategy for websites to combat pirating and illegal websites. I support this initiative by these major companies to try and deter their efforts. Advertising is how many of these sites stay in business because people are obviously not paying for the content. If they attempt to restrict their advertising we come a step closer to putting down some of these sites. I am sure there will be some legal issues and cases resulting from this. However I think this a good move in the right direction.

And? The whole point of the Do Not Track header is to provide a unified opt-out mechanism.

If Microsoft wants to start integrating things into IE, they’re welcome to, but that has no bearing on the fact that they’re intentionally mis-implementing their support for it and acting as if they can somehow dictate terms to advertisers.

Adoption is voluntary and advertisers are joining in to avoid the risk of being slapped with binding regulations. Hence, they have the freedom to ignore signals from implementations like IE’s that are broken according to the draft spec.

(This is like those “We don’t support your ancient version of IE. Please upgrade.” banners except that, in this case, sites can actually do it without driving users away.)
