Hmm… I see your point. Of course I had a different perception. It did not strike me that much seeing her black so early and it looked consistent to me. From the moment the old King went on war with her, Darkness was already gaining her heart but she was smart enough not to abuse her power and only defended the non-violated territory against men’s greed.

As she made her way home after her wings were cut, robbed and taken away like a trophy, I wouldn’t have expected anything else but see her dive into anger and hatred. (I don’t know how a woman feels after being betrayed by her only love but I know some would feed ideas of murder :D.) After all he didn’t have the guts to kill her, which was enough to humiliate her even more. Of course it could sound like the well-known pre-made idea that “men are all pigs” but since the whole plot is about another false idea (which of course turns out to be obviously wrong) that “true love doesn’t exist” I won’t give in :D . In fact turning her land into darkness sounded logical, be it to impress and scare men away. It didn’t work of course… you know… men again.

I have a doubt about polluted waters though, I didn’t spot anything that would have hinted at that possibility. I take it for a clue that since her former lover decided to be a king, she only had to be a queen to restore balance. What else but an authoritarian queen was she to become after being deceived like this? At least that didn’t make the movie look quite off to me.

But again, interpretation may vary from buddy to buddy.

So seeing her in black so early on was a foreshadowing of the role she was to become.

What she did to their magical land was any oxymoron when to protect this area from humans she did not just raise a barrier but as seen most clearly at the end she also screwed up the whole area making these magical folk live in brambles, branches and polluted water. They should have killed her in her sleep but it was more like “bad mood bitches, this is your life now”.

I am sure critics won’t be kind but there you go.

We liked it so much we watched it once alone and once again with friends. It’s a keeper in my vault.

We enjoyed How to Train Your Dragon 1 and just downloaded 2. I’m sure we’ll love that one as well.
