You can make that 5th Amendment argument in the US (still – how much longer?)…but anywhere else? You’re presumed guilty until you can prove yourself innocent. You don’t cough up the passwords, you must therefore be guilty of something, because if you’ve nothing to hide, you’ve nothing to fear, right? We wrote the 1st, 4th and 5th Amendments in particular BECAUSE of the hideous things the crown was doing at the time, and apparently continue to do today.

Now if we could only find a President who was actually committed to protecting/enforcing the fundamental law of the land…

Jason; You are not required by law to help snare yourself. This is the case in many countries and the most known one is “you have the right to remain silent…”

This country however is so fucked up in terms of “justice” you’d cry your eyes out from frustration and anger when looking into it :-/

I deleted a TrueCrypt container full of files just the other day because I had forgotten the password. This was primarily due to not having used it for a long time.

I agree with the safe analogy. In a free society where the law works under a presumption of innocence, nobody should ever be forced to do anything that may incriminate themselves, something which can be done even when nothing criminal took place. The police aren’t exactly trustworthy or competent these days after all.

Re: the last paragraph of this article, citizens in sweden aren’t required to give the police any reasonable assistance to decrypt hard drives and other media? They certainly are in Australia – if your computer gets seized, and you don’t help the police decrypt it, you are going to prison (usually for longer than if you had’ve helped, as it’s a form of hindering police investigations)
