Can't fight ideas?

Tell that to nazi germany, who by and large were Social Darwinists who practiced Eugenics to purify a "race", which in itself was just an idea conjured up by racist colonialism.

In biological terms, there's only the human "race", but ask typical folks about race, and they'll describe skin color variations, as if to differentiate the human species into arbitrary subcategories.

Even though the idea of race hasn't been clarified in (popular) culture, at least the idea of a single dominating ethnic group (not race) was "beaten" in the last world war.

Before you jump on me for saying it was "beaten", it's true that ideas can't really be beaten, but at least it can be shuttered to controllable obscurity, which is presumably what the U.S. wants.

i.e. - Who are the Nazi's now? - They are out of touch individuals who fall in line with hateful fringe groups, who's ideas aren't taken seriously in popular culture, and who's members aren't a serious threat to domestic stability.

i.e. - Who are the radical Islamists now, and how much influence do they have in their predominant regions? They aren't exactly a fringe group if they can affect global politics, and so that's what the U.S. is fighting to change, both, for its own domestic security, and for stability with business partners throughout the Middle East. It's not wrong to make money, is it? I for one am satisfied that here in New York, there hasn't been another terrorist attack, knock on wood.

The "war on terror" is really an attempt to minimize socio-political influence of radical Islam throughout the Middle East, and not for its eradication. There are still idiots out there who call themselves nazis but who takes them seriously nowadays? Imagine radical Islamists reduced to that kind of limited influence! The world would be a better place, call me naive.

I just wish our politicians had the sense to say it as it is. "Terrorism" is just too vague, because terrorists come from all walks of life, and are motivated in just as diverse a manner as those who practice it.

Unfortunately, as with any war, there are always rules to be bent to get the job done, and subsequently those who take the fall, are those who probably did the most to achieve the goal. I don't know whether to call them outlaws or patriots who made sacrifices that didn't include their own deaths. It's not as black and white as the media wants us to believe.

I agree with the US Copyright Czar, the only way to effectively combat online piracy is through an all of the above approach. I think it will require some legislation to give the government tools to shut down these activities, but without private sector buy in it will not succeed. I hope companies that allow piracy will take a cue from Ms. Espinel that this is a real problem that is hurting the bottom line of the innovators that drive our economy. A collaborative partnership between the public and private sector on piracy will give incentive to creators and allow the public to continue to enjoy their content in a responsible manner.
