I say that you haven't thought the matter through.

It would appear, from the DoJ letter, that they want to change the law "ex post facto" and that is a no-no dating back centuries.

Their motivation, whatever it may be, is wrong.

A new law could be written that would apply to all US citizens and those who violate it, after its effective date, could be penalized. But, no law can be written that is binding on foreign nationals who do not violate it while on US soil.

It is true that the internet has made transnational crimes much easier today, but that is a matter for international treaties and not unilateral laws of a single sovereign state.

If the US is ever to know any sort of peace, we've got to get over the sense that we are the only nation that matters.

If the US can enforce its laws globally, what is to keep other nations from doing the same? Even if you toe the line perfectly in the US (I assure you that, no matter how strongly motivated to do so you may be, you do not), are you living up to the laws of Russia, Kazakhstan, China, Afghanistan and Myanmar?

You aren't even aware of all the laws of the US and how they might affect you. Do you have ANY knowledge concerning the laws of other nations?

You might be surprised how little it takes to garner a prison sentence elsewhere. For instance, it is legal to be a Christian in America and to recommend that faith to others. You can't get away with this in any Muslim country that I am aware of.

1.) How would closing the loophole in the law affect this case? I'm not a lawyer, but I don't think changes in the law would be applied retroactively. If the case is dismissed, they could refile under the new law, assuming jeopardy isn't attached But changing the law now would not make it OK that they didn't file with a US address... I mean if they pass a law today stating blue jeans can't be worn in public, I couldn't be arrested for wearing them in public yesterday...

2.) Are they really serious claiming everyone is subjective to US laws, even if they never set foot in the US?!? The courts are gonna get swamped with a large backlog then.... Most European countries and Canada have the gall to let people drink at 18 (some even as young as 16), clearly violating US law that mandates a minimum age of 21... That's going to be a hella lot of underage citations.... And that's just one law, I'm sure there are countless others....
