Yes, they can. Yes, they have to. No, they won't; they'll just keep lobbying and suing and hoping that throwing their money around magically makes them relevant again. They're too stupid to do anything else, even when they admit it won't work.

I just want to bring a Sony exec home and show them my region 4 copy of Inside Man (that I can't play on my north american dvd player and thus tv) ... so we'd have to watch it on my PC (permanently set to Australia) and then enjoy the unskippable anti-piracy ads...and then show them how my downloaded version (which I downloaded, literally, so I could watch the movie I paid for on my own tv) is 10000% better and easier.

Piracy should not offer a better user experience, yet most of the time, it's way better than the DRM'd crap they try to sell. And they wonder why people pirate.

As @Rob8urchips:disqus said "we told you". And I'll add an "O rly?" to the soup.

Still, it's somewhat sinister to see such sane comments from those specific individuals.

@ANoiXioNA:disqus Exactly, soon there will be apps that let you see a shared folder on all the phones that are close enough to you and share directly, without even using the provider's network.

Want to know how i know that? Because i just shared the idea.

The sad thing is, they still have nothing to offer on the digital download stage that the consumer actually wants. Low def versions on iTunes are not the answer.

I want my stuff as a 1080 digital download as a minimum, and able to be moved around various PC's, laptops, Asus/WDTV media players and hard drives easily. I no longer want a pile of CD's/DVD's/BluRays filling up my lounge room, when at a touch of a button I can access what ever I want off a 2 TB hard drive and skip all the advertising and rubbish at the start of a DVD.

I also do not want to pay a premium every time a new format comes out to replace my entire collection. I did that from tape to CD and VHS to DVD and I refuse to do it to convert to BluRay. If I have previously bought something in a digital format, then I should be able to upgrade to a higher def version for a minimal price.

Until they come to that same conclusion, then they will not regain the majority of people that download back to a paying system. But the big studios have become greedy after they saw the potential profits from everyone buying the back catalogues from Tape and VHS and switching to CD/DVD and they expect the money train to continue into BluRay and then again digital downloads.

While Sony was battling Toshiba for control of the next movie format for years, which they won due to DRM and therefore Studio support, the consumer simply bypassed both of them to digital downloads.
