The place where breaking news, BitTorrent and copyright collide

Feds, Please Return My Personal Files Stored at MegaUpload!

The feds shut down MegaUpload a few hours ago.

Eight people we charged with criminal copyright infringement charges, and all files hosted on the site were pulled offline.

However, do the feds realize that hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions of people used the site to share research data, work documents, personal video collections and much more?

What will happen to these personal non-infringing files?

People are outraged on Twitter and are demanding access to their files immediately.

Listen Americans stop being stupid, internet is not your property. stop acting like a world police and dictating which site can live which die. FROM the Internetz

      • Gunther

Dickhead, the Americans are raging over this too. Why do you think you even know what SOPA and PIPA are?

        • Tom

I believe Bubba is referring to the Americans that shut down Megaupload.

        • duh

          Because Americans created them?

        • AreYouKiddingME?

This is THE SCARIEST legislation *EVER* proposed by the United States Government.

Something *REALLY* weird is going on in America.
1-Obama sings a law that if you are considered a “Terrorist”, the U.S. military (even though you are a CITIZEN-non U.S. Military—-you can be held INDEFINITELY without a right to Trial By Juroy

2-After he singed that. The U.S. Pentagon offered ANY POLICE STATION in America a FREE MILITARY TANK–all they had to do is “ask” for one. (one showed up at a police force close to where I live).

          Source:
          http://articles.businessinsider.com/2011-12-05/news/30476833_1_armored-vehicles-military-equipment-police-forces

3-Then they talk about taking away “Free Spech”–Here’s a perfect Example. Let’s say you are a Wall Street Protestor. You video tape and take pictures of police Brutality. Someone like Murdoch comes along and says it’s *HIS* media (doing a “favor” to be repaid later)–by the NYC government. If it’s on YouTube, Goole has 5-days to take it down. So obviously they’ll do it quickly.

Heck, imagine if you posted it to your blog on “Blogspot” (that Google Owns). Quite literally Murdoch could force Google to take down THE ENTIRE SITE of “Blogspot” (even though teh sub-domain is where the copyright fight is going on. So quite literally *MILLIONS* of people would lose their livelyhod and ability to publish stories.

          So sad, Comedy Sites like
          Hyperbole And a Half
          http://hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com/

Gary, Land Lord of the Flies
          http://strangerthaneviction.tumblr.com/page/4
FYI–you have to read “backwards” (ie. Page 4 from the bottom UP–page 3 from the BOTTOM up and so on).

Swear to god,,,I’m not AT ALL related to the site–don’t even think he has Ads on it—but is is a HILARIOUS recounting of problems he had with his Landlord when he moved into the house to rent a room from him

          Steam Me Up Kid
          http://steammeupkid.blogspot.com/

          Little White Lion
          http://littlewhitelion.blogspot.com/

What happens is that it’s *UP TO YOU* to prove that *YOU* took the pictures.

Do you honestly think a “common man” can go up against a BILLION DOLLAR corporation? Of course not–so “Free Speech” and the ability to keep an “eye on” Government will be *GONE*

What’s REALLY TELLING is *NO ONE*–Not once SINGLE Major American News organization had anything to say about the outrage and protests against this Bill. CNN only mentioned it *ONE TIME* (in some other conversation)

Something *VERY BAD* is about to “go down” in the U.S.A. I don’t know what is is….but “The Government” is moving the chess pieces into place so “information” can not get out there.

This Bill is ONLY about Free Speech and *NOTHING* to do with Piracy. PERIOD!

        • Tyronetagoylo

TRUE under the the monroe doctrine they were not even allowed to intervene with the people from the east ( megaupload founders found in New Zealand). The americans are not the police of the east

      • KrunchyMonk

Except America owns the DNS servers. It dies, you die. Also, MegaUpload was a Globally accessible site, and EVERYONE lost data. If you get your head out of the crack three feet below your head, you would see that internet censorship is bad.

Ignorance and stupidity is also bad, so go lurk moar….

        • Don335

No, the DNS (registry) for .COM is in the US, because it is a US extension… it would be megaupload.de, then it would have been a different story.

      • http://profiles.google.com/steveaustin1971 Michael Langford

No fuck you for electing criminal after criminal… you have this second amendment you SO cherish but your all to afraid to stand up. The 4% or so of you with balls can’t do it on their own.

        • Jeremy R.

Someone gets it ^. Luckily the 4% of us who stand up still believe we CAN do it on our own.

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_IZ5BM5GNLA54OADSWGSXAMA7SY Jay

Do you realize how atrocious our voting process is?

We remove that, no more problems. Stop advocating the 2nd Amendment to solve all problems. It doesn’t.

        • http://profiles.google.com/steveaustin1971 Michael Langford

If you think they will give up their power without it being forcefully pulled from their grasp you are sadly mistaken. History shows us what needs to be done.

        • http://electrodexs.net/ Steven

The US political/justice system has evolved to a point where the “majority of the people” no longer controls anything. Instead, we in the US are governed by the “Majority of the cash” where the few with most of the money in the US control everyone else.

This minority with the majority of the money will never read these comments. They will never do anything that would not either get them more money or get them more power. To them, people are merely cattle to be used to build their luxurious estates. If something will get them more money (like taking out the online competition) they will finance it and support it and buyout/get rid of anyone they see as a threat.

The only way to fight something like this is to make sure politicians know that if they take the bribes, they will not be elected into office again.
…And this is where ppl get lax, as know one seems to remember who did what at whatever was voted on. Those who are elected are those with the most financial support and best speech writers. As long as they don’t say anything specific and use words like “change” and “hope” and the “future” their set.

What’s the solution? IS there a solution?
All the time humans have had to live and grow into “civilized” creatures with rules and societies and THIS is all we have to show for it?!

Yes, I am very good at complaining.

Too bad complaining doesn’t get anybody anywhere.

Oh yeah, if the US govt is so bad, why don’t the people rebel? Truth is, we’ve been “civilized” meaning that rebellion = chaos = bad. Also, people tend to be REACTIVE, not PROACTIVE. It’s only after the shit hits the fan that people start thinking, “Gee, maybe we should do something about the shit-throwing monkeys.”

        • http://www.facebook.com/readdyeddy Edward Lee

umm, the second amendment does do alot, but remember… there are consequences… apparently you didnt study enough of the bill of rights huh?
          go study more

        • Flyingbatpig

Our 4% asses will try our hardest to bring it up to 10% or 15% or more, The more people we light a fire under, the better chance we have.

Granted most of the US has their heads shoved two inches from their small intestine on this matter, but we’ll do our damndest.

        • Technicolor_nina

Um, I think you mean the FIRST Amendment, freedom of speech, religion, press, and assembly, yes? The Second Amendment is the right to bear arms (in a militia, if we want to be technical).

      • Olin

Unfortunately, a cabal of criminals has taken over the US government over the past few decades and they waste all our money building a military bigger than all the other countries put together just so they can do anything they want. Hopefully the people have had just about enough and these occupy protests will be just the very beginning of turning this all around. If not, the only recourse will be force.

        • WeAreLegion

Acutally the US military standing is dropping like a stone. I believe, last time I checked the combined might of the Army NAVY Marines Airforce Coastguard and their affiliated reserve groups no longer even reaches the top 10 of world military power (standing and reserve) there has also been cutbacks on weapons development and production. A very good example would be the termination of the F22 Raptor contract before even 25 planes were constructed.

If one were to analyze the situation you could swear the United States Government is puposefully forcing it’s military into a situation where they will not have the intelligence, resources, or ability to stop a major attack on its nation. A prime example being the Word Trade Center attacks. Which if the military were in its proper condition I.E. cold war era armament/training etc. The first plane may have struck the twin towers but the second attack would have been intercepted and shot down.

The US is falling from power in more ways than one and all of them point to a private agenda from a possible global entity seeking control of the masses.

I for one support Hactivist groups such as Anonymous who make it a point to prove to politicians and major money movers that their actions have consequences and will not be allowed to move unchecked.

link to example post of aforementioned organization
(I am not affiliated with this group though I do believe their current actions are in the right)

        • Barbara_marie

I hope I’m not misreading your comment, but I think this effects more than just the Americans. I’m from Australia, and I’ll tell you something, where the USA goes, we try to follow. I’ve been reading up on all this the past few days, and the more I read, the more I get this really bad feeling that our world is changing around, and not for the better.

SORRY GUYS, DONT EXPECT ANY DATA BACK!

Taken from the 72 page indicment, in page 5 :

” [...] Only premium users have a realistic chance of having any private long-term storage¹ [...]

¹ Even then, all users are warned in Megaupload.com’s “Frequently Asked Questions” and Terms of Service that they should not keep the sole copy of any file on Megaupload.com and that users bear all risk of data loss. The Mega Conspiracy’s duty to retain any data for even a premium user explicitly ends when either the premium subscription runs out or Megaupload.com decides, at its sole discretion and without any required notice, to stop operating.”

    • UniversalSoldier

This is all because of m-f-ing US!!

      • http://www.facebook.com/keekola Niki Spencer

This is *actually* because of our misguided, overly corrupt, bought and paid for, clearly overstepping their boundaries federal government. Now our big brother is , once more, sharing our domestic misery and pain with the rest of the world. Ain’t it grand.

        • Jim

Actually, this is because megaupload was the largest online locker of copied videos, media and software.

Sure, people used it legitimately, but you must have been sleeping under a rock if you think its was only used for legitimate purposes.

I don’t agree with it being taken down, but let’s not pretend for a second that it wasn’t affecting the content creators in some negative way.

I’m all for being open minded about file sharing, but lets not be so open minded that our brains fall out…

        • Anonymous

          @ Jim

If they keep extending copyright to the extent that it is far beyond reasonable, (even recently going so far as to reclaim public domain works BACK under copyright) then why should we respect or honor in any way such a law?

The problem isn’t file sharing or piracy, it’s restrictive rights to IP lasting damn near forever.

EACH ONE OF US will be long dead before any works created in our time become public domain.

        • Cnu4frnds

@Jim Was the content not developed for consumers. I understand we should withhold their creative rights over their content. But, why does the content have to be in copyright forever? If loss of revenue is their issue of contention, why can’t they just jump into file sharing themselves reaping the ad revenue instead of talking bullshit.

    • B4336330

This has nothing to do with SOPA. SOPA has not been passed, and likely will not be.

  • http://torrentfreak.com/ Rob8urcakes

The USA’s government and its so-called “law enforcement agencies” have YET AGAIN over-reached itself in terms of a lawful, diplomatic and peaceful remedy to their own psychosis over CopyWrong law.

A psychosis that’s fuelled by cash paid by the “content industry” to political candidates standing for election. Don’t believe me? Here’s proof -

    “Hollywood threatens Obama over SOPA

“God knows how much money we’ve given to Obama and the Democrats and yet they’re not supporting our interests,” another anonymous Hollywood insider tells Deadline.
“There’s been no greater supporters of him than we’ve been from the first day and the first fundraisers continuing until he was elected. We all were pleased. And, at its heart institutionally, Hollywood supports the Democrats. Now we need the administration to support us. This is a very important time for Hollywood.”

    http://rt.com/usa/news/hollywood-obama-sopa-support-229/

This corporate, cash-fuelled conspiracy to undermine democracy really needs to end if the USA has any chance of stepping back from the brink of creating World War III. We’ve defeated the fascists in many Country’s worldwide in the last century, so the USA will make a grave error if they think we wont act again.

Sharing IS caring, but freedom is even more vital.

    • Oli

“God knows how much money we’ve given to Obama and the Democrats and yet they’re not supporting our interests,”

Had to laugh.. You shouldn’t have interfered in politics then! Kinda reminds me of those films when the incorruptible refuses the bribe! :D

      • MR.barbosa

He took the bribe thats why they did what they did.

    • WW3

Dear friend Rob, it’s time the rogue country called United States of America is contained. You talk of World War III and honestly it seems this is what the US are asking for.

      • Muso

They could very well be asking for it, and they might not like it when we all pick teams!! WW3 doesn’t have to be fought on a field with soldiers. Find a new battleground. The battleground they have already chosen….. Fight for YOUR internet.

      • wildta

        World War 3???

New Zealand police sent 76 officers , do you think we can win??

        • Anonymous

A long protracted Guerilla War? Yes.

        • Qweqwe

Hehe. That was the WHOLE force in Auckland :-)

      • WARwhatisitGOODfor?

WW3 would actually benefit the USA right now IMO as it would put other countries into the same financial ruin they are in. I hope if there is a WW3 that it is every other country in the world vs the USA. I have nothing against the people of the USA, but if they are not going to stand up to their Government somebody has to. How long until we are faced with the US actually trying to take over the world?

USA, the only Country in the world that has been around for 235 years and 90% of that time they have been at War with themselves or someone else for some kind of control. Yes that is a true fact 209 years of war in the 235 years they have been a country. Maybe it’s just me but that is so very sad. Of course it’s even worse if you take into consideration that USA did not technically become a country until 1789 when the constitution was put into effect which would make the US only 223 and bring that percentage a lot higher. STOP THE HATE USA AND JUST LIVE AND LET LIVE YOU ARE NOT MY OVERLORD!

        • mmmmmmmm

Can we please draw a distinct line between “USA- all 307 million of them” and “US Dept. of Justice”. This was not a public referendum, assholes. The DoJ shut the site down because it was a US-registered .com, fully in violation of US IP law. Do I agree? No. But, don’t act as if the US is this Spartan force hellbent on shutting down YOUR internet.
More shit you guys need to get straight: This has nothing to do with SOPA. SOPA/PIPA hasn’t been voted on and the vote has been suspended indefinitely.
The US actually is not in financial ruin compared to the rest of the world. Have you seen the Euro crisis? I’m European…. it’s fucking scary.

    • Carbonfilter

the sad truth is. all the illegal content that is drooled over, by the world. Is all born in the USA. So i can see why the rest of the world is mad. They have nothing to watch anymore. If you hate the US so bad. Stop watching all that is developed there, as a matter of fact throw your computer out the window because that was developed there as well. I got a black eye as a kid, when i messed up. Yea was it wrong for a adult to punch me in the eye? mmmm yes. Was the US government overstepping? mmmm yes. Guess what! People with black eyes learn there lessons. And that is what the US does, dishes out black eyes.

“We’ve defeated the fascists in many Country’s worldwide in the last century, so the USA will make a grave error if they think we wont act again”

Shut the hell up. Your probably the weakest guy in your town.

      • Nobug

Yeah, b/c also, they’re so conveniently leaving out the fact that the fascists were defeated overwhelmingly by the US. Do they think they would’ve done it themselves? No, they were losing until we came in anyway.

That being said FUCK the United States government and their obsequiousness to corporations right in the ass. I think you actually have to be an American to understand the cynicism in letting the government handle much of anything. People wonder why we don’t implement the much needed doses of socialism that other civilized (and even some non-civilized) countries have? Because there’ a broad swath of government distrust in the populace, and w/ shit like this taking place, I don’t see it going away anytime soon.

        • m00tpoint

“The fascists were defeated overwhelmingly by the US.”

From another American … utterly wrong. 90% of the German army’s dead soldiers were killed by the Red Army. The U.S. lost ~450K military dead during WW2. The Soviets lost ~8.5 million military dead, and even more civilians.

Yes, the US manufactured and gave its allies a LOT of equipment. Yes, the US provided 2/3 of the troops on and after D-Day, but D-Day was only possible after the German army was already fatally weakened in Russia. Yes, we and the Brits destroyed the German Air Force and navy and pounded the cities. But to say the US played the overwhelmingly vital role? Sorry, but Americans would never have been willing or able to do what the Russians did to Nazi Germany, and without the Russians in the East, D-Day could never have succeeded.

          m00tpoint

      You have no idea…

I had personal files for my Youtube page and was going to post them as a second alternative. All of my business plans are shot on MU. That site really helped in allowing me to put up stuff as I get my business off the ground.

Now I have to rethink my strategy. I’d be pissed too. That site was pretty damn helpful in doing a number of things such as distributing files in an efficient manner.

      • wildta

      • SouthofReality

Well, only a fool would not have know that Mega-Upload was allowing users to illegally post copy-righted material. So NEXT time, don’t use a site engaging in clearly illegal activities. caveat emptor and it applies to to Internet users as well.

        • Mikezb

What of the fool who thinks MegaUpload had an unfunded obligation to police their customers?

  • http://twitter.com/stevehartke Steve Hartke

I don’t really think attacking the government is the right way to go about this.

They are just doing what they are being bribed to do. Attempting to change the laws and financially punishing the companies responsible for the bribery, as well as identifying and directly addressing the representatives and functionaries of those companies (MPAA executives and functionaries) might be a better way to go.

There are very, very few of these people and they are attacking a communications medium used by billions of people in the name of ENTERTAINMENT PROFITS FOR CRYING OUT LOUD.

    This is intolerable.

    • Mikk35

Both the companies bribing and people accepting bribes are guilty.

    • Muso

All good in theory, but how do you kick out a corrupt group? How do you change the laws, when it’s the corrupt group that has the power? Vote them out? Like elections aren’t fuct. He with the biggest wallet writes the laws….. Oh, and that’s after you have planted your lackeys in the required positions. It takes time to fine tune a government to this level of corruption. How about we start a new inter-network of computers and tell them to stay the hell off OUR internet! LOL!

      • SouthofReality

Just to be clear here, who’s the corrupt group? Is it the government or is it the Web site that is allowing users to steal copy-righted materials? Does anyone dispute that Mega-Upload was actively supporting theft? Or are you going to try to redefine theft as “If I really want it, I should be able to have it — free.”

        • Mr.Marcus Kähkönen

You are a fool if you dont see the issue in the matter. This is far more then just stop “digital theft”. It is total censure of the internet and giving control too a very very small group of people, the entertainment industri. And we all have learned from history that it is not a good idea. And about you statment… Everything was not Illegal on there site you know. That is a HUGE factor which shocks me. They should not been able to go in so harsh with that factor being in mind. Or is the US Courhouse that stupid…? No.. dont answer that question.. You got fuck up lawsystem. I have read some of you laws… Apparently in Florida,Women can be fined for falling asleep under a hairdryer as can the salon owner.
It’s illegal for a single, divorced, or widowed woman to Parachute on Sunday afternoons.
And besides… isnt it wierd to have laws that goes against millions of millions of people? Aint laws created and for the people protect the majority? Something is wrong…

    • http://profiles.google.com/steveaustin1971 Michael Langford

Wrong. Literally attacking the government is what it will take. History shows us that.

We can all store our files where they might actually be safe from Legal Beagles intent on breaking every law legal and moral just because Hollywood says ‘go get them’
This is likely to break or make a number of Politicians in the US depending on which hoop they jump through.
Freedom of speech is dying a death in the country that claims it is a right… Such a shame

      • Blah

Last time USA “went to the moon” I remember seeing the flag flapping in the breeze. Correct me if I am wrong though, there is no atmosphere, therefore no wind to blow the flag… hahahahahahaha fooled by another stunt paid for by Hollywood!

        • Ajh

Mythbusters proved the flag waving as intertia from planting it. There’s no atmosphere so there’s no atmospheric friction to stop it’s moving.

Likely the US would just claim they put their flag there so it’s their domain..

        • guest

          You’re wrong.

  • Jrhindo

“completely braeking down over this shit fuck you america” And then USA wonders why it is hated all over the world (and its only rising by the day). STOP doing irresponsible shit damn it! USA =/= World Empire

    • Wildta

I’m sitting here in America reading all this crap about how bad i am.Do you think that all the ppl in the US have a special button to push and have sites taken down? Do you think it hurts you more than it hurts me? If your looking for someone to lash out at try the Special Interest Groups. Find out who they are and expose THEM.. Find the dirt on them , follow the money trail to the corrupt Government officials. So please stop saying that i did something wrong.

btw: fuck your little piss ant country!(now i feel better lowering myself to your level).

      • Sid

Wow, those piss ants sound awesome!

      • Jaeden

People don’t seem to be attacking the American people here but in fact the American Government. The only heat the American people are taking here is due to the fact that they let it get this bad.

Also you really have no right to call any country a piss ant country as your country is in $15 Trillion of debt right now, again because of your Government, but the American people voted Bush into office a second time which really didn’t help.

We are not bad mouthing Americans on here because we think they are the ones doing all of this, we are well aware it is your Government and other organizations that were formed and exist in the US, but the American people really did nothing to stop it. Of course there was the Occupy movement, but I would call that too little too late.

I get that you are standing up for your country and yourself, but seriously as far as the country goes dude, there is just not that much to stand up for anymore. Can you truly say that you are living in a FREE country. I mean no one can actually say that, but those other countries don’t claim it so flamboyantly either. Obviously there has to be laws, otherwise we have anarchy, but a line has to be drawn as to which laws are actually necessary to protect the public and which laws are solely there to control the public. Land of the free my ass, if you were free you would be allowed to go to any damn website you wanted among other things.

Before anyone goes off with a stupid comment like “So you support CP sites?” or something to that extent. No you idiot I would just think that common sense prevails and people would realize what kind of sites I am actually talking about.

        • Sauce

America’s nearly $15 trillion debt isn’t owed to other country’s. About 3/4 of it is our governments debt owed to American citizens in savings bonds and such. Also, for every dollar that our country owes, whether to ourselves or another country, we are owed about 83 cents from other countries. Therefor, our debt to other countries is much lower than the amount we are owed from other countries. People just love throwing that debt into arguments without actually knowing that America is still on top.
Also, look at your government before you attack another one. I can assure you they have been bribed to pass shitty laws or overstep their boundaries. They all have.

        • Peter van Rijswijk

As of May 2011 the largest single holder of U.S. government debt was China, with 26 percent of all foreign-held U.S. Treasury securities (8% of total US public debt).
Meaning the US owes China roughly 2.4 Trillion US out of the 9.64 trillion total foreign debt

        • Athena

ummm… Someone rigged the 2004 election. I know for a fact that I vote for Kerry but the machine stated I vote for Bush. I almost got arrested for complaining

      • Anonymous

The people elect the government. The government ruins (and erases) multitudes of foreign lives… it’s understandable that more and more people are upset with the country in general.

It’s a difficult situation because the people have very little control and even less self discipline. Gone is the notion of restraint. A “consume no media” day would have a MASSIVE impact against these thugs, but you’d be hard pressed to find any significant number of Americans willing to not consume media, even for a single day. Sad times.

    • Mikehunt99m

the real terrorists are 2 groups, the lobbyists that make the bribes, and the governors /senators that accept the bribes, remember it takes two to tango. The original intent of the government was to have a body to represent the best intentions for the population, the people. what we have now is a body that performs the actions of the highest bidder regardless of its impact on the populace. it will take the populace acting up for the government to be reminded that they are supposed to be there to represent us, the people, and that they are not up there to take money from companies to do whatever they want.

        • Sandnomad

You need to understand that the CIA trained Osama bin Laden, when he and his mujahadeen were forcing the Russians out of Afghanistan, so the CIA could control the flow of opium. At that time Afghanistan supplied 60% of the world’s opium. They now supply 90%. One of the world’s richest sources of lithium was also recently discovered there, so troops may remain for sometime. After all, we need that lithium for the batteries of hybrids, so the car companies can prosper. Saddam used to be one of our biggest allies in the Middle East and sold the U.S. a lot of oil. The internet used to be a great resource for intellectual development, but since it generated trillions of dollars, it must now be controlled and eventually taxed. If the music and film industry are losing so much money, why don’t they change their business model or go into another business. They might even consider the fact that $20 million is too much to pay an actor to act in a 90 minute film. Every other businessman or woman has to do just that, unless of course you are a banker in the U.S., then you would receive TARP money to bail you out. At the rate we are regressing as a country, it is just a matter of time before a catastrophic event jolts us all into reality, and I bet the Chinese are watching closely.

Megaupload was always going to get taken down – far too flagrant publication of copyrighted material. It’s got nothing to do with SOPA!
I think sharing on the web is great, and I don’t care if it’s copyrighted material – but Megaupload and some similar sites are making loads of money out of making it possible for people to view pirated stuff – of course they will be targeted as they are blatantly breaking laws.
Bluntly – I support sharing on the web, but not the right of people to make millions out of the practice. That’s their risk. In this case they lost.

    • Zan

” some similar sites are making loads of money out of making it possible for people to view pirated stuff -of course they will be targeted as they are blatantly breaking laws.”

you mean like google?yahoo?all isps?display manufacturers?

Tell you what go shutdown the whole internet already, your all dying too.

      Then go fuck yourself!

      • http://twitter.com/jonathanriggall Jonathan Riggall

Google and YouTube etc are not the same.
It’s not a black and white thing – and you don’t need to take an ‘all or nothing’ attitude.
MegaUpload, with its pop-up ads and limitations to non-premium account holders was a pretty slimy company. Charging users to watch content they didn’t own was too much. Letting users watch it for free with some ad support… that’s a notch down.
Google allowing people to search for illegal stuff is not the same as hosting it – only SOPAs strongest supporters take that attitude!

And I know it’s the internet, but we don’t need to escalate the discussion to telling each other to go fuck ourselves yet. Do we?

        • braden

uhh not sure how youtube and google are any different, maybe your getting confused because they look nicer and are bigger/more influential? googles income comes from advertising, a more subtle kind, but no different than pop up adds. I honestly think its more slimy because they tend to trick people into looking at these paid advertisements instead of being blatantly obvious. And paying for a service? what is wrong with that? The internet needs to move in this direction.

        • Ezzrra Cheung

no one said you had to pay. it was truly up to your own accord if you wanted to pay for an account.

        • Anonymous

“Charging users to watch content they didn’t own was too much. Letting users watch it for free with some ad support… that’s a notch down.”

This is quite literally what youtube does.

          Youtube doesn’t host copyrighted content?

          http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6f8irs1MrA

Took 5 seconds of searching to find that. Good fight, come up with another argument now.

        • Concerned Party

Actually i was watching one of the Star Wars movies on YouTube the other night. Pretty sure that’s copyrighted material. So How is YT different again?

        • Mr.Marcus Kähkönen

Wait wait wait jonathan… “Google and YouTube etc are not the same.
It’s not a black and white thing – and you don’t need to take an ‘all or nothing’ attitude.” They should, according to law, shut down YouTube and Google. If they don’t it is clearly something wrong with the law and there is some interests involved in the recent case(*Cough*Entertainment industry*Cough*). They should follow the same protocol as they used with MegaUpload on all similar cases, which will lead us to a dead internet..

      • John

Zen, you’re a mental midget, try picking your battles a little better.

and for all those who lost personal files to Megavideo, you’re fucking retarded putting your personal files on a pirate site.

        • MetaL

Pirate site? Do you even know what you’re talking about?
Allow me to explain: Megaupload for a (shortened) lifetime premium user like me is an unlimited storage server with services that include regular backups of your files wich basicaly made it failsafe… unfortunately not fedsafe.
It allows to access your files anywhere, share them with co-workers, friends and even family. There is nothing wrong with it.
Megaupload pirate is someone who uploads a copyrighted movie, music, etc. AND (this “and” is really very important) share it on any public site.
PIRACY IS NOT HAVING ILLEGAL CONTENT, IT’S SHARING IT, or even worst: selling it. And I can assure you MegaUpload did not share anything. Some users did.
I wonder if everything you have in your computer is legal… fkn hypocrite.

        • John

First off, there are many sites for on-line storage that are not associated with criminals like megaupload, for your personal/work files I would pick more carefully which I use. Death by association, get a clue.

Did I say pirating software was a sin, nope… eat shit and die today. I hope your mother gets raped.

        • MetaL

So… you knew all along that megaupload was associated with fellons???? I didn’t saw that in their home page.
Shame on me… And you think that if megaupload goes definitely down, the other file sharing services would stay online???? You’re really not seeing the big picture here.

I DO eat shitty things everyday. I hope you live a long life with a tree growing up yours… sideways. My mother hopes she gets raped too.

        • John

yes all along, it’s not rocket science fella…. and well, seems we agree on the rest.

        • Mr.Barbosa

just think all those personal files are now in the hands of the feds. each one being carefully coppied and studdied…. HMMmmmmm

        • Ale

Could you stop speaking about “i hope (…) rape”?
As woman I find it insulting. At least, if you really have to, instead of hoping each other’s mothers to be raped, wish it for each other. But, oh no, you’re both to men for that.

        • MetaL

Ale, I’m sorry if I insulted you or other women in any way.
I actually didn’t hope or wish any harm to anyones mother, just a joke about my own.
Maybe it was my lousy english fault.

    • http://twitter.com/thelau Laurent Thevenet

If the feds are logical, they will shutdown YouTube after that. Pretty sure the YouTube execs are well aware of copyrighted content available for free on their site (music, full hd documentaries) but it’s Google and it’s american.

      • Anonymous

Google has more than enough money to meet the Federal requirement of cash to skirt the law.

    • http://www.facebook.com/bovski Dmitri Bovski

What the hell are you on about lots of us kept legal content stored there just because it was abused by some customers doesn’t mean it should be closed down. Do you think google should be closed because they link to copyright infringing material.

Megaupload is protected by safe harbor legislation in the DMCA.

    • SouthofReality

      “… I don’t care if it’s copyrighted material”

You might care if it was your intellectual property that was being stolen. Ever sweat blood writing a book, designing an app, or composing a song? Probably not. Theft is theft and Megaupload was actively supporting theft. I hope users can get their legitimate files back, but I don’t mourn that site’s demise.

      • Muso

More like taking down a website outside your jurisdiction, and imposing your will on others, just cuz, Stealing the legit intellectual property of others that was stored on that site. Doing all without due process. All in the name of “WE’RE THE BOSS OF THE WORLD!” Pretty close to what Hitler would have wanted, don’t you agree? Oh, right. The Nazi regime never took anything that didn’t belong to them. Nor did they impose their will on anyone at all…. if you can’t see where this is going, give your head a shake. The United States has become the largest police force ever. Badges? We don’t need no stinking badges!! We own the WORLD!!

Yes they are the same thing. They process DMCA notices just like Mega even though Mega doesn’t have to comply because it’s not in the US. I use Megaupload for free. No limitations, never had to pay for it. Google hosts illegal stuff as much as Mega.

You don’t have a clue of what you are talking about.

Sure there is pirated content, but there is legitimate content too, and in some cases the only copies will have been on megaupload at the time (after all, alot of people simply didn’t see this coming, and it’s never really happened before either) … so effectively by denying people (and not just US citizens) the ACCESS to THEIR property, they are effectively stealing as well, are they not? Two wrongs don’t make a right. This must be repealed.

  • JaredLeeLoughner

    Do what I done.
    Go fucking nuts

    • Guest123

Meh. Do what *I* done. Get a public IP from your ISP and host your own damned files on your own server. Add in a RAID system for back-ups. Know your IP number so you can get straight to it even if the DNS is down.

It’s not that difficult, but it may cost you something for the static public IP. The question is: is it worth it to you to have total control over your own files and content?

Google “Net drive”; I’m sure they’ll have specific directions on how to point the IP at your box etc.

      • Mr.Marcus Kähkönen

        Isnt that backward thinking…

One one note. Why dont we just destroy all the computers and have no CD or DVD. Then we cant do piracy! Problem solved! “Sarcasm”
Ok seriously. We have always copied since the first foot we stood on this earth. We saw other people make fire and we copied it… Didnt see anyone sue that person for “Stealing” his idea and let him freeze too death. It is a fact that it is in our nature and history to copy.

What is this ‘something’ you speak of? When grassroots movements are getting broken down and peppersprayed in the streets, and websites soon too will be dismantled for their dissidence, people will become more afraid (mostly from the fearmongerers that are our readily accessible media outlets) and less likely to stand up amd make a change. In our digital age, a free, open internet is an integral piece to help bring about the next ‘revolution’ as it were…. we need a lot of help, because we clearly haven’t made enough noise yet to make a difference- even just among our own voting population… the brainwashing has been thorough and on constant assault with 24/7 coverage.

The thing is, how can the people of ANY democracy stand there shaking their heads saying, “Don’t blame us! It isn’t us, it’s our government. We have no control over them!”?

It’s a DEMOCRACY. TAKE control. Believe it or not, the 99% of you “not” in charge outnumber the 1% who ARE in charge. All you need to do is to get together, as a people, and demand chsnge with your votes.

How many of you here voted in the last election? Pick a candidate (maybe Stephen Colbert, if you think he’ll be any different if he gets in), and everyone vote for him.

        Theoretically, it’d work.

Let’s put some context here you people who had personal files on this service really felt comfortable with this services legal grounds? LOL

    • Muso

Let’s put some context here…. Idiot much? What cyberlocker doesn’t have the ability for someone to store not-so-legal files as well as perfectly legal and legit work files? Moron. How many bank vaults store ‘illegal’ or laundered money in their safe deposit boxes? Same bloody principle. Seize the banks according to your philosophy.

      • Barney

I would never “backup” anything to the internet. Servers fail, services get shut down or close their doors. Megaupload is a seedy site. Why anyone would trust their precious data there is beyond me. Get smart people! Stop being so retarded. This outcome was expected and foreseen. Use foresight!

        • Muso

And back to my comment…. how many ‘seedy’ banks are out there? Was Megaupload used for ANYTHING legal at all? If so, then what about the law abiding citizens, or those out of the loop that actually thought Megaupload was a legit cyberlocker (roll with me here….LOL!) The fact that there were legit files on there that were taken by the US authorities is just astounding.

Internet backup is a great way of doing things. Especially if you work from more than one location. Oh, I could carry around a portable hard drive in my back pocket, but once they reach 4TB, they get a little uncomfortable. Sure, Mega might been seen as shady to some, but the point is how the US can walk in and take whatever they want, whenever they want regardless of where it is. That’s the problem here.

      • Mwhahaha

And yet again, American politics throws it’s obese ass all over the internet and expects us to go “oh well. It’s gone”. I had LEGALLY created files up there as a backup for Uni and what happens? America comes over and takes it out. If we were to ask them for the files back, they’d just either laugh or make some frantic excuse to why we can’t get it back. We’ve seen similar to this before in smaller cases, the crucial thing appears to be about how much money you’re making off the back of copyrighted works you don’t have permission to share.

What happened to the old hatred for pirates who profit? Whenever a pay tracker went down everyone used to bitch how they shouldn’t make money cos sharing is caring.

Now MU goes and there’s no mention of that ethic. Personally if you’re coining it in on the back of other ppl’s work then you deserve what you get.

Sharing is just that, no profit, spreading the cultural wealth.

If these posts are to be believed then some digital education is urgently required.

If you upload a photo to Facebook and then delete the original from your camera / computer – is Facebook responsible for looking after your precious photo? No.

Also – I can’t get over people using Megaupload for genuine business stuff. Seriously? It’s like letting a paedophile look after your kids or an alcoholic look after your booze cupboard. You must have known it was dodgy – right? Like they say – you lie down with dogs, you get fleas.

I’m totally against SOPA and the regulation that they want, but the best poster boy for intellectual freedom is not the multi-millionaire gangster who ran this site and made millions in advertising revenue.

Hardly the type of freedom fighter I want to champion.

By the way – this is exactly the argument that Rupert Murdoch and the media behemoths WANT. It’s black and white – it’s easy. Whether you agree with copyright law as it stands or not, Megaupload was knowingly distributing material that contravened CURRENT copyright law. DON’T FEED THE REPUBLICANS!

    • wildta

I could not have said it better. Wait i can. DON’T FEED THE DEMOCRATS!

    • apodixis

Copyright law is flexible. That’s what fair use and the resale doctrine and other legal principles in that law mean. Executive indiscretion which panders to a crony cartel is not. It’s just a jackboot. Media companies have their civil remedies and can prove their damages in civil court; they just want the US taxpayer to foot their legal bills. Next they’ll be saying the Authorization for the Use of Military Force justifies whatever they choose do.

      • SouthofReality

        “Copyright law is flexible.”

Yes, but the flexibilty mostly lies in the hands of the creator of the material, not with the user. If Creator A wants to freely share his or her work you cannot expect the same thing from Creator B.

        • apodixis

Wrong SouthofReality. People who own copies can record them and share them and do other things with them in their own social circle within whatever the bounds of fair use law proves to be in the new digital universe and this particular situation. This is a matter of civil law and no one has proved a thing about any of these users or the people with whom they might be sharing. The burden should be on the corporations to sue and prove infringement. This is corporate America using the power of the US government and its criminal division to do its dirty work for it at taxpayer expense and at the expense of the potentially totally innocent. It may very well be a gross violation of due process and in no sense justified.

All I can say is, the corporation who lobbied the government to shut down Megaupload could be their ultimate downfall. Megaupload being shut down I think is the biggest catalyst, and the timing couldn’t have been more perfect seeing that SOPA is falling apart, it’s probably a last ditched move to scare the public in their mind but I think they’ve overlooked at how the crowd will behave. Surely the stupidity of someone using MU as a backup or even sole storage is a moot point.

When the Feds took the site down they did take personal data, and the people who lost said data should stand up for their rights, regardless of the outcome. MU’s time was coming, legal action was inevitable, but the (however few, however stupid) legitimate users should not be penalised for others misdemeanors.

I personally have rarely used MU, and on those rare occasions only to download (genuinley, legal material) so this is (currently) not affecting me. To those who have uploaded, don’t roll over and accept the inevitable, take a stance and pursue the outcome you just might deserve.

    • ohyo

These people do not come in FEW. And if all file hosting sites are illegal, actions against them would be taken long ago. No one saw this coming. This time, the feds have really done it. They took down 4 percent of the internet. You have rarely used MU because you are a internet fucktard.

      • BacklitVillain

I did not say that there ‘was’ few legal users. I said ‘however’ few, in reply to the many comments above stating that the majority of MU user use it for illegal activity. I am completely in support of all the users who used MU for legit storage.

Many people saw it coming, prehaps not so soon. MU was a clear and obvious target for the fight against piracy.

My internet fucktard status has nothing to do with me rarely using MU, I generally have no use for it.

I hope that clears things up for you, prick.

I didn’t read all of the comments as they trailed on for a very long time, but this is my point. Whenever an unjust law gets added to the books, there will be those of us who rise up in civil disobedience and say F*CK YOU to “The Man.” This arrest does not have anything to do with SOPA and PIPA. As far as asking us (American citizens) why we haven’t done anything to stop the corrupt government, it’s like asking the ant in the road why he didn’t stop the car’s tire preventing it from skidding off the road. If we were to invoke the 2nd amendment, as it was suggested by a few, all that would do is get us a special (rather short) spot on the evening news as some lunatic hoarding away and stockpiling artillery only to get busted by the police for acting like a moron. I agree with what was said that the problem is special interest groups that essentially bribe the legislators (the people who write the laws) to make the laws benefit them. Jack Abramoff recently explained how companies can get a 22000% return on investment by lobbying congress. That means for every $1 invested, they have a $220 return. The system is BROKEN!

    • Electedpoc2008

Did you ever wonder how politicians enter Congress without little money and become millionaires after a few years in office?
They are EXEMPT from insider trading laws. Yes, just like they EXEMPTED themselves from OBAMACARE.
So when they receive insider information from LOBBYISTS and acted on it–making millions of dollars–they face NO CRIMINAL ACTION like other Americans.
The congress and this corrupt administration are a disgrace and total embarrassment–I hope all you “hope and changers” are happy!
DEMOCRAT and one the corrupt culprits behind the downfall of the housing industry — CHRIS DODD (recently retired) is now the LOBBYIST for the MPAA!!
Research his threats against congressman who wouldn’t support SOPA/PIPA.

        lmao

  • Zachf420

So everyones talking about their lost files and business, how was mega upload used as a business advantage? I’m not that internet savy

    • Guest

@Zachf420 —What MegaUpload (legal) use for is sharing files too large to email and or not practical to put on a USB fob.

For example, lets assume you took a video of your Child’s first steps. Most likely the file would be very large. Because of this you would not be able to email it to friends and family

      So, sites like “MegaUpload”/”DropBox”/”Box”/YouSendIT

Are sites that exist where by you can upload that video…send the link of the Video out in an Email–and everyone can download it to their own website.

HOWEVER, THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT POINT TO MAKE

*AT NO TIME* can you “surf” the site. (ie. you have no idea what’s on there–so a “Legal Person” would never know illegal files were on there.

You pay a modest subscription feed to use the site

Also, think of a Guy working on a very big project for work. He can upload that to MegaUpload, Go home–type in his Password, download it and work on it from home. MANY MANY people use the service for this purpse.

It’s called “CLOUD” computing because your destination point does not have the local file until you download it…It’s protected by a 3rd party “the cloud”

It’s a revolution in saving Data–Important stuff, etc. For example, people will upload Prescious Memories (Child’s first step, Pictures they took, Important Documents, etc. Just a way that in case your computer is damaged/stolen–at least you can get your “Precious Memories” Data back

This is *VERY SERIOUS* to those who were properly using the sites..VERY SERIOUS. (I saw a Tweet a guy uploaded HIS OWN COPYRIGHT songs–now he can’t get to them). SAD!

Seriously guys, it’s not just America. The dollars and euros and yen and yuan run things at an international level. Think Berne Convention. Why do you think the US passed the DMCA in 1998? To comply with those treaties. Same goes for the current SOPA/PIPA stuff and the recent ruling that works in the public domain can go back into copyright – that’s to comply with more international copyright law sponsored by big corporations. Upending the US political system would hardly work – the US would just be pressured into going back to the way things were.

Not trying to say it’s hopeless, but it needs to be a worldwide movement of ordinary people taking back control (and in many cases, taking control for the first time in their generation or many generations.) Force of arms isn’t going to work because even in gun-happy “Amurrica” most of us do not have weapons, and nobody has defenses against what the military has! Peaceful resistance has a good track record. It is the course that is most likely to leave us a world worth living in at the end of the struggle. Of course it will be bloody – it’s already bloody. But it’s nothing like what it would be if the minority of armed Americans whipped out their pistols and hunting rifles and went after police and militaries armed with predator drones, tactical nukes, chemical weapons, and tanks that fire depleted uranium slugs. That would just lead to a permanent police state that makes our current conditions look like utopia.

We need to recognize that the notions of “enemies” and “foreigners” is a construct that is much more useful to the elite than it is to ordinary people. Why not dispense with them and make common cause? We need to stay when they demand that we move, move when they demand we hold still, stop buying when they say we must buy, keep silent when they order us to speak, and raise our own voices when they tell us to listen passively. Not to be obstinate in the name of some anarchic or libertarian principle, but tactically, constructively, in order to regain control of, by, and for the people.

    • apodixis

Good point that international “lawmaking” bodies have vast, secret, essentially unauthorized capacity to do damage, because they are controlled by big corporate interests. To wit, the Basel financial “regulators” who wrote into “law” that mortgage backed securities and sovereign debt were to be considered, by “law,” AAA. Thus manufacturing billions in fees on sales of bad debt to sucker buyers for the immediate benefit solely of a cartel of investment banks.

We can all store our files where they might actually be safe from Legal Beagles intent on breaking every law legal and moral just because Hollywood says ‘go get them’

This is likely to break or make a number of Politicians in the US depending on which hoop they jump through. Good timing for justice I say!

Ya, just like backing up my hard drive, I always keep two copies of everything. Forward a copy of my email to another account, everything online has a copy, etc. Too many files lost due to unexpected internet things.

Companies go bankrupt, get bought out, or… get shut down by the FBI.

S*cks big time, but we have to learn sometime.

There’s even excellent ways to backup social media. You can download your facebook info, nuffly.com for other profiles, etc.

As a Canadian, I feel deeply sympathetic for Americans. Most of us are normal hard working people, but as Americans your children will never have a chance at a normal life, in a normal country. Instead, fewer and fewer of you will have access to information, education, healthcare, employment opportunities, financial stability, and quite possibly a life without a country at war. Your welcome here if you can be proper smart and ideologically left leaning.

I love Canada, I love the idealism, I love the free healthcare, I love the mounties (Due South Rocks :-) ) But I fear for your future if America has it’s wicked way, don’t you know they are trying to bring America, Canada and Mexico together into a North American Union with it’s own currency and controlled by America…I love Canada, let’s keep it Canada!

“North American Union” Canada, Mexico and USA to Become One Country?

The 3 governments in charge of the USA, Canada and Mexico are aligning themselves with large corporations to form the North American Union (NAU) also known as the “Deep Integration” project. This would place the 3 countries under American control.

The integration would mean Mexico and Canada would have to harmonize their laws and regulations to suit the imperial ambitions of the US government. The idea is to turn the nations into something parallel to the European Union.

In 2003 the Canadian Council of CEO’s launched the North American and Prosperity Initiative with 5 major elements in their strategy; The reinvention of Canada/USA/Mexico borders, and the negotiation of a North American defense alliance, are just 2.

I think megaupload is always help us to do our activity, I hope US Government hear people opinion about SOPA and PIPA so they can stop misunderstanding with people and do what people hope.

Whatever the rights and wrongs of the action against Megaupload, this isn’t really a valid criticism. If your only copy of a file that’s important to you is in the cloud – ANY cloud provider, not just this one – then, frankly, you are stupid. Cloud storage is fine as a content distribution method, but it’s no substitute for local storage and proper backups.

Once again the big money wins because politicians are so greedy and need the money that is funneled their way by anti-piracy groups that they do not give a shit about consequences other than their own wallets

The problem with the ‘Civilized’ world is that we are bred to be ‘normal’, we are given a set of rules to define what normal is and as long as we stay within the boundaries of ‘normal’ then other people accept us and we ‘Fit In’. This indoctrination is done through control of media, control of education and control of political options. Think about the truly great political leaders, the ones who went against the ‘normal’ who fought to change what is broken, what is wrong they all ended up with a bullet in the brain or were disgraced (America I’m looking at you :-) )

We effectively police ourselves, the masses dictate what is acceptable and what is not and sadly the masses are poorly educated and often subject to mass media hysteria.

America is fast becoming a corporate owned entity, the UK and Europe is not far behind and Asia is forming closer ties with the west each year. The Bank bailouts were a complete farce, America, the UK and Europe all suffering from the biggest robbery ever witnessed and to what end? They are still doing what they do best…Manipulating the currencies and keeping the people where they are ‘meant’ to be, slaves to money, slaves to debt. Why did the taxpayer have to bail out the banks for a self created problem? why are we still relying on them? why did we accept it when we all seemed to scream no to the politicians? The fact is that until we have a true political choice, until the rigged voting system of the US and the downright broken voting system of the UK and Europe is replaced with a fair and open system, with political candidates and parties that stand for a true choice, not just another version of the others stance, we are all doomed to slavery.

Stand up and be heard, Stand up and be counted, Stand against the normal and fight against the sheep mentality that enslaves us!!!!! We can all make a difference, but we have to do it together, before it’s too late!

When you purchased one of my models I would send you a link to mega, and a password to open the zip file. Now my major source of income is gone. Thanks U.S. government, now you can pay my bills, I’M going on welfare.

I’m totally against SOPA and the regulation that they want, but the best poster boy for intellectual freedom is not the multi-millionaire gangster who ran this site and made millions in advertising revenue.

There is a long history of lowering interest rates to sell houses, than raising interest rates to force for-closure’s and overall debt, Then the Interest rates skyrocket and the banks claw everything back at pennies on the dollar. Then they use all the now desperate people to go off to war.

If you are a US citizen and you are tired of the bullshit your govt. comes up with, and make no mistake we as a people are giving away our rights by not coming out, then you need to visit http://www.goooh.com. It is time “We the People” are heard once again by our leaders. I have seen some ligitimate insight from a lot of folks on here looking in from the outside. We need to see it ourselves.. Wake America

  • Randal Jackson

I’m an American myself, and all of the stuff above people have said I must agree with. Simply put, this government is a corrupt group acting with only the support of dumb-ass Americans and the money paid to them by people with deep pockets. Sooner or later, the middle-low-class citizens aren’t gonna be so stupid to their tricks anymore, and it wouldn’t surprise me if a revolt goes up, someone takes a nuclear missile facility, and nukes our own damn country, right in the middle of the corrupt politicians meeting room.

I’d do it myself, save for the fact that I don’t have an army, am short on weapons, and don’t have quite the amount of ammo I would need to do so.
