Apple Sighs in Relief – Pirate App Store Shuts Down For Good

Hackulous, perhaps the Internet’s most famous cracked app community, has dramatically closed its doors. The community shut down yesterday but that isn’t the only damage. Apptrackr, the web-based partner index for cracked apps and Installous, the app used by millions to transfer cracked apps to their iDevices, have also been disabled. The operators cite lack of activity for the shutdown but it seems unlikely that’s the only reason.

Although there are plenty of sites specializing in similar things, the Hackulous community is particularly well known among users of jailbroken Apple devices.

Aside from the community forums, Hackulous is known for its direct connections with Apptrakr, a huge web-based index of cracked apps and Installous, a clever piece of software which allows the installation of iOS software found via Apptrakr and elsewhere.

But as of yesterday, Hackulous is officially no more.

“We are very sad to announce that Hackulous is shutting down,” the team said in a statement.

“After many years, our community has become stagnant and our forums are a bit of a ghost town. It has become difficult to keep them online and well-moderated, despite the devotion of our staff. We’re incredibly thankful for the support we’ve had over the years and hope that new, greater communities blossom out of our absence.”

While the announcement was made on Hackulous, it didn’t mention the fate of either Apptrackr or Installous, the software that relies on Apptrackr to function.

Installous is installed on millions of Apple devices such as the iPhone and iPad and was the key way for people to transfer pirate apps to their phones and tablets. However, following the Hackulous announcement the app has been rendered completely non-functional, apparently disabled by the Hackulous team that controlled it.

installous

TorrentFreak tried to contact Dissident, the admin of the projects, for an official statement. He has spoken with us on numerous occasions in the past (and has even guest-blogged here) but the emails bounced. It appears that for whatever reason he’s preferring to keep a low profile at the moment.

We did manage to speak to two other people familiar with the sites’ operations and they told us they were surprised at the decision due to a number of factors.

The sites were apparently healthy and still had plenty of users. Indeed, the shutdown statement appears to carry a contradiction – “ghost town” forums are by their very nature not particularly difficult to keep “well-moderated” since nobody uses them. Nevertheless, this is the cited reason for the shutdown.

Also, Installous was used by millions and served up ads each and every time someone carried out a key app-related action within the software. Regardless of whether the Hackulous forums were doing well or not, Hackulous was still installed on millions of machines leading to (presumably) some half-decent advertising revenue to fund the project and more. It’s difficult to see why that would be terminated due to a quiet forum.

The other issue is that Dissident has always gone out of his way to say how passionately he feels about the “try before you buy” aspect of Installous and how important it is to give people a chance to taste an app before committing to a purchase. Trials are certainly more readily available officially than they were before Installous began so it’s possible that Dissident thought the mission was over.

The final piece of the puzzle could come on the back of rumors that a jailbreak for iOS6 won’t be forthcoming. No jailbreak for future iOSs means that Installous and indeed the completely legal Cydia can no longer function on new machines. Did this play a part in the shutdown decision? We’ll need to track down Dissident to find out more.

The closures of these Hackukous projects raise more questions than they answer but will still come as a shock to those who relied on Installous for their software fix. Time to start shelling out a few cents an app it seems – luckily that’s not going to break the bank.

    Big deal…

99% of app in the apple store are crap anyway.

The other 1% are worth buying.

Only in your troll opinion. Enough said.

This reads like a textbook case of these people being threatened in some manner. As to an iOS6 jailbreak not coming out…. give it time, give it time.

Even in fear of causing flame war I must say this isn’t a bad thing. The less Apple apps people can have for free the less i-devices they will use and the bigger losses Apple will have. Like some famous ancient Roman said Ceterum Censeo Apple Esse Delendam. Apple must be destroyed, long live the Android! :)

Exactly , Apple iSheep need to wake up and stop being locked into that environment ,Android is the future. Forget about Window phones as well….

Couldn’t agree more. Well said! Its might actually be a blessing in disguise. I hope there will be no more jailbreaks coming out lol. That will be another nail in Apple’s coffin. The creative hackers and developers who come up with these jailbreaks need to focus their energy on more productive areas.

        • OneEyedWillie

You are correct! Apple really does have to go for the better of all Mankind. Apple is at best a toy and their computers are a joke. Their peripherals are ok but I don’t think they should lock their OS. Why go against human nature that wants to be free. Apple is constantly fighting the people and this is why they will die a slow death. Real computer geeks DON’T use apple. Say anything else and you just show your ignorance.

There are plenty of free apps in the Apple App Store.

Besides 99¢ may be a big deal to you but not to many others.

And honest work should be rewarded.

But then only a thief steals and condone this kind of action.

          “scumbags”?

“jailbreaking” is also known as “establishing root”. You think anyone who purchases an iPhone is a “scumbag” for wanting to be the de facto owner of the phone they bought?

Your abhorrence of the concept of personal property is duly noted.

      • Um Excuse Me?

I’m sorry…. threatened with what? Legal repercussions for inciting users to steal applications?

      • PiRat

I’d say the same applies to all mobile devices, not just Apple.

      • Dwoj

Well most of the apps ARE indeed garbage. So many copies, similar apps, stupidly priced apps, and low quality work is put on there for at least 99 cents. These apps deserve to get pirated, and it’s not like apple doesn’t get enough money, and people get ripped off from greedy scumbags.

    • Guest321

I’m never gonna buy any of Apple’s crappy overpriced products, so its no loss for me. But must I shed a tear or two for the dumb sheeple who choose to buy iCrap devices?

    • TMc51

The same applies to the Google Play Store. The vast majority are completely rubbish, with a couple semi-decent ones here and there, and maybe one in ten thousand even worth paying for.

    • Gma

On more reason to not buying Apple product. Apple are relief that they will not get any business and deal from us pirate, so congratulation and well done!

Previously at least we still get their device and pirate their apps they still earn from us getting their crappie device, but now they get nothing.

Well honestly I have to say I did use Installulous, I tried out different guitar toolkit specific apps, and after testing them all out, it helped me buy the right one, which cost me 10 bucks, but was so worth it. So in reality, it is a big deal (in a non-sarcastic way).

    • cgimusic

Agreed but the huge advantage with Installous was was that you could find out which of the apps was the 1% worth buying before hand. The number of apps that I bought before I jailbroke my device that either didn’t work at all or didn’t work as advertised is crazy so I for one will be very sad to see it go.

    • Scary_Devil_Monastery

Maybe not. Apple without Steve Jobs is much like Apple right before they almost went bankrupt and had to beg for him to come back.

And that more or less means Apple lost the edge it needed to retain market supremacy over android. Something like Installous may be developed for anything which has a following. But when free alternatives already exist where jailbreaking isn’t required, where would the motive be?

  • conspiricy

I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple paid the dude off.

Apple know that their customers are cash cows. The fact that they buy Apple in the first place suggests this.

The app you purchased is yours forever as it is tied to your Apple ID account.

*sarcasm* God forbid developers actually have to update their apps for compatibility and security updates around Android and iOS *sarcasm off*

        • Shayne Oneill

They do allow refunds. As an app developer I’ve had to refund a few people who realised they didn’t need a voip app. Which is fucking annoying, because I get refunds for broken, but research your damn purchases before causing headaches for devs.

Why do I want a USB port in a phone? To sync or charge. Sure wish Apple had a way to do that.

High build quality? You know this junk is mass produced in Chinese workshops, right?
iOS is garbage, too. If anything about it is well-made, it’s its restrictive featureless nature. Fine for people who are too dumb to fully take advantage of a computer (and too dumb to realize they’re +100-200% $ for branding), I guess.

Macs are advertised to pros that do multimedia stuff. It cannot do even that. Also how about melting screen in macbooks and all-in-one macs?

Also Samsung Galaxy line of products is far superior in terms of hardware than shitPhone, has better CPU, can do 3d graphics properly, like without hanging every so often (as Unity game developer I’ve tried my game both on Galaxy S3 and shitPhone – on shitPhone it was like I’d run Crysis on Geforce2, on S3 it was smooth and cool).

Install “vShare” from Cydia it is better. If the App Store would give a credit for the app you pay for and delete the same day if you dont like it, then I would agree that vShare, installous, Appcake, iTools, etc would be less attractive. For now it still is very attractive. Regardless most $.99 apps don’t wort it.

    • RIAAtarded

LOL.. you have no clue what you’re talking about I’ve owned both android and apple. I stayed with android so I already ‘left’. It really would be nice if users here would take 30 seconds and actually google an answer then post something intelligent rather then not and look stupid.
Fact is one android device out sold the iphone which is quite the feat considering android is across multiple devices and IOS has only one. As to your bloat comments android gives you the option to remove it. Not being able to upgrade? Just because your carrier doesn’t release stuff in a timely fashion in no way effects your ability to upgrade. I have a atrix running the latest version of jelly bean. Sad fact is android is better then IOS, by making it configurable both hardware and software wise you appeal to a larger audience. This is just another prime example of how why we need less restrictions in the world not more.

      • Skweets

Finally someone who can have a intelligent debate :0)

Interesting stuff in your post, I didn’t know android gives you the option to remove bloat, please explain this further! Being able to upgrade are you referring to custom roms? I’m all for less restrictions as all but my latest iDevice had been jailbroken.

        • RIAAtarded

xdadeveloper and google your favorite phone. They have all kinds of roms depending on what level of customization you want. My atrix has everything from gingerbread which is standard right up to jelly bean. Roms with and without motoblur (motorola’s bloatware) as well as others trimmed down for speed or full blown. Yes you’ll need to root it and load a recovery for my phone it is CWM. Once done however it gives you a tonnes of options and doesn’t leave you at the mercy of the manufacture or your carrier as far as updates go. jelly bean is a much smoother OS then the stock on both my android devices and I’ve keep both because of it. Carriers prefer to hold back updates so they get the new phone sale. Reality is you don’t need the new phone in most cases. Sadly being outside of the USA the upgrade path on my atrix was stuck at gingerbread and my xoom was honey comb which is buggy as hell. Also the hacks have allowed me to run a full linux OS on the phone which comes in handy for work booting into a proper environment and although there are terminal emulators for android nothing beats a proper OS. Basically I’m no longer tethered to a foolish repetitive upgrade cycle because I have the option to extend the life of the product.

        • Scary_Devil_Monastery

There are today, on Android, at least five different variants of Custom ROMs which work as well as, or better, than vanilla android or sense. Cyanogen, Oxygene, etc. Spartan stripped-down or bloat selectively kept.

So yes, on an android today being that the entire platform is open-source, you have a choice ranging the gamut of stable and spartan all the way up to open alpha with bloatware to the gills.

If your main issue is with individual brands of android – such as HTC sense, for instance – then rest assured, you can step away from that as well.

      • Martin

I’ve owned both and I’m a fanboy of neither. I’m actually looking forward to Tizen. I’m now back to iOS and disagree with most of what you said.

You can remove bloatware but it requires root. I got tired of half baked buggy roms from the community. Even Official Cyanogen had it’s issues. Old blob drivers forcing you to run an old kernel + new Android OS = problems.

I found iOS apps are higher quality than the comparable Android apps. Even Google Voice works better on the iPhone and iOS updates are a dream.

Android is popular because it’s cheap and available at all Carriers. It’s easy to root and out of the box is more open than iOS. However, a rooted Android with custom recovery vs Jailbroken iPhone, as someone who’s abused both, I’ll take the iPhone.

        • RIAAtarded

well having used both and support clients running both i’ll take android because it is customizable IOS is not. Locking a device will only restrict sales

    • Michael Alderson

Android Malware is mostly just a myth, there is adware however. Of course all of this is entirely avoidable by not rooting your device or rerooting it and also by checking the permissions of the apps you install before blindly installing them. Also if you want all the latest updates then get an official Google phone.

      • Skweets

Thanks for the reply & the info. Do google phones get the major version updates on a regular basis also???

        • Michael Alderson

They get the updates right away before the source code is even released normally, certainly before any other phone on the market.

    • Baba

Really dude, you just look like an idiot trying to somehow defend apple.

I can think of many reasons why somebody would want to leave iOS, not least because of its dated appearance, recent poor design and functionality issues or lack of customization and freedom.

OK I will admit the devices are quite nice looking and in most cases better than the competition but I would have to question if it is really worth the huge extra cost just to have a slightly better looking, less powerful phone.

And this is coming from somebody that owns an iphone, only I have the sense to see that apple has run out of ideas long ago and is happy to treat its customers like fools.

      • Skweets

In my experience i had no problems with my iDevices so i’m happy to defend a company that makes quality hardware/OS.

Dated appearance….yep i give you that as it would be nice for a change although it still works great, recent poor design…please elaborate?, functionality issues…again please elaborate??, customisation & freedom…..unfortunately this only comes from jailbreaks which i have done on all but my latest iDevice which there is no availability yet & yes i give you that also.

The devices are well built & yes it is worth the extra bucks in my opinion, less powerful you say??? I’ve seen a iPhone 5 out perform the S3 many times in the flesh.

Yes they are running awfully low on ideas & they better be coming up with some new innovations damn soon but in the meantime I will be sticking with the higher quality hardware & more stable unix OS rather than waste money on a low quality product that won’t last.

In regards to apple treating its customers like fools, i know full well what i’m purchasing beforehand although i guess a ton of people don’t so maybe they are the fools you’re talking about??

        • Shayne Oneill

In fairness the maps thing was bit of a clusterfuck. But I’m not seeing “poor design” as an issue with anything else , to be honest. Lotsa fanboyism going on in here I’m afraid.

Protip people: The minute you think “Kill the infidel” over personal device preferences, you’ve already lost the intellectual war. Some folks like droids some like idevices. It is what it is.

        • Scary_Devil_Monastery

Did you miss how the recent spate of iDevice vs android has begun boiling down to better tech reviews for the androids (such as the galaxy tab over the ipad 2) but a solid win for Apple in court due to designing a rectangular communications device with a centered screen?

Steve Jobs WAS Apple. Today they are, as innovators, right back where they were at the brink of bankruptcy before they begged Jobs to come back as dictator. You will see nothing new from now on.

As for stable…no, seriously, Android is very stable in my experience. To be expected since that, too, is a *nix OS.

The design issue…honestly, Between my HTC One X and the iPhone 5 it’s not going to be a contest. The HTC wins hands down. Where the S3 by samsung admittedly feels flimsy.

And as for hardware – seriously, the components for the three main brands of phones were probably made by the same kids in the same asian factories. You will not find an appreciable difference in quality.

Except that Apple, for an identical product, wants 50-100$ more. Given that their screen seems designed to crack easily where HTC and Samsung tend to have shatter-resistant glass it’s pretty easy to say where a savvy consumer spends his greenbacks.

Back when Steve Jobs was still among the living I used to say it was a matter entirely up to taste which I’d recommend – there being little different between Android >3.2+ anything and the iPhone. Now? I think I’ll bet on the hardware/software with a future, not a past.

Apple no longer make such high quality hardware. They sell it at a high price point, but that doesn’t equate to quality. Compare the build of any piece of Apple kit from 2012 to a similar product from 2002 or 1992 and you’ll see what I mean. I still have some Apple machines from pre-1992 running, but I doubt my newest Mac (2012) will outlive them or even come close to it.

Recent poor design examples from Apple? Hmmm… Non-removable battery in laptops (which are renowned for requiring replacement batteries a couple of years down the line). The iPhone 4/4S antenna problem (poor placement). New iMac being so much thinner – how is this important when it takes up as much space on the desk as the old model (and you look at the ‘fat’ bit – the screen – anyway), but now is too thin for an internal optical drive so if you need one you have to use an external… taking up more desk space and losing a USB port (and you pay much more for this privilege)! Appletalk getting regressively worse to network with other OS versions at every incremental OSX update. Introducing and then dropping new interface features every other version of the OS (they’re getting nearly as bad as Microsoft for this one). Glass phone cases – they’re just not robust enough for a device that spends most of its life in a pocket with keys, change and pocket fluff. The latest iLife apps with the stupid leather-bound look. Just a few random things that Apple have done in recent years that are down to bad software and hardware design decisions.

“more stable unix OS”? Yes it’s true iOS is based on the same modified BSD kernel as OSX, but Android is based on Linux. So what’s your point? They’re both N*X operating systems.

@Skweets heeeeellooo? You mean that Crapple products that still uses Core2 line of products in Macs instead of iX line? How about crappy GPU in Mac? Or crap soundcard? Macs are advertised to pros that do multimedia stuff. It cannot do even that. Also how about melting screen in macbooks and all-in-one macs?

Also Samsung Galaxy line of products is far superior in terms of hardware than shitPhone, has better CPU, can do 3d graphics properly, like without hanging every so often (as Unity game developer I’ve tried my game both on Galaxy S3 and shitPhone – on shitPhone it was like I’d run Crysis on Geforce2, on S3 it was smooth and cool).

    • Scary_Devil_Monastery

“Why would some want to leave a way more secure & stable platform??”

They aren’t. They are moving to another brand of *nix architecture – Android instead of iOS.

And that’s the smart move to do. Remember Apple before Steve Jobs? Remember the groundbreaking moves which were iPhone 3 and 4?

What you will see, ten years down the line, is the same iPhone you have today, completely eclipsed by the Android and Windows-devices still in evolution.

And as for the rant about “crapware” – well, good for you that you like BSD but that’s not a good call to make when you have to root your phone each and every time after you make an update just to get it to install those 3rd-party apps again…

    • Guest

Low standard devices? pah wake up. iDevices are outdated long before they leave the factory line. Please stop spreading FUD about other better products just cos you have your head buried so far up Steve Jobs ass.

Please by all means, hold onto your locked up devices, but don’t claim they are the best (that would be something a short bus kid would say.)

    • HoHum

iOS is pretty pants – and the hardware is ridiculously locked down for no sensible reason. I’ve been a MacUser for 25 years, but I use Android devices because they sync better with my Macs without having to purchase any additional service.

To tell you the truth, I’ve been spending less and less time in OSX over the past couple of years and more time with Linux on my Macs, simply because of Apple’s attitude towards its longstanding customer-base and the ever-creeping lockdown they’re sneaking into OSX bit by bit from one version to the next. For now you can still choose to install from sources other than the App Store… but only for now. I’d imagine that by the time they release OS 11 (whatever they decide to call it) the App Store will be the ONLY way to install apps to your Mac without ‘jailbreaking’ it.

So you’re right, I’m not walking away from iOS, I’m steering clear of it altogether and likely to be walking away from OSX in the future. There was a time when I was loyal to Apple’s products because they worked for what I do, but platform lockdown doesn’t rank highly in my list of desirable features on any device. And in terms of malware, you’re not safe on any platform if you fall prey to social engineering attacks – the fastest growing technique is placing stickers with QR codes on them on posters covering up the official codes. The QR links back to a maliciously crafted webpage to attack known exploits in different mobile OS (yes, there are holes in iOS as well as Android).

You’re attacking ‘fandroids’ for labelling iPhone users ‘iSheep’ yet you have no arguments beyond the same kind of fanboi arguments you lambast your nemeses for using.

Let it go man… there are more important things to spend your life worrying about and, seriously, Apple hasn’t built any really great pieces of hardware since they decided to cut quality and costs to increase margins when they switched over to the Intel chipset – Apple aren’t interested in longevity anymore, they’re just consumer white goods builders now and they WANT you to have to update your hardware on a more regular basis.

  • M.

My take: Apple stopped being relevant a while ago… Android is the future.

    • Christopher Kidwell

They are still relevant, however the more people can get on Android devices compared to iPhones, the more they will switch to those Android devices.

      • http://modmyi.com/forums/iphone-4-new-skins-themes-launches/740147-neurotech-hd.html#post5637502 Jay

This is Apple’s greatest threat, you’re right. Android will spur adoption among those with lesser incomes. I can now afford an Android phone, but I still can’t afford an Apple phone. Apple never made an affordable phone for the rest of us, whereas Android has phones at every price-point imaginable.

    • http://nejtillpirater.wordpress.com/ Nejtillpirater

Both platforms have their advantages and disadvantages. I have both an iPhone and an Android phone. Both works but I’ve found that I prefer the iPhone in 99% of the cases, using the Android phone only since my company only supports that platform for their employees.

I’ve developed some software (on hobby basis) for both platforms and the Apple XCode environment is much better than the Android SDK etc.

And guess what, the Apple platform is where the money is, the Apple users actually think that developers producing great apps deserves to get paid.

Did you even read my text?

The quoted text, taken out of context by you, implicitly says that iOS users in general are more keen on paying for apps than Android users. This is a well-known fact. Many developers have chosen to skip the Android platform for that reason.

        • Well twisted

implying IOS was not out first.
implying Developers had not already payed out cash to dev apple software.
implying devs who dev IOS apps do not dev android too.

Many retards think that what you said was smart but in all actuality, what you said was a misrepresentation of cherry picked facts in an ATTEMPT to justify a PREEXISTING narrative.

        • Well twisted

          was for @Nejtillpirater

Now that is also a misrepresentation.
Deal with facts, like, show that IOS users buy more software.
Show us the facts on users disposable income.
Show us the facts about how long apps have been sold for etc…
Don’t state the preconceived “notion” of yours that pirates are not willing to pay for stuff.

Had an iPhone 3GS then a 4 (due to P.O.S 3GS dying) over a period of about 3 years. Spent $5-10 on app store, rest was cracked. Felt like I owned an overpriced toy and wasn’t going to waste any more money on apps.

Now using Galaxy S3 for less than a year and have spent around $60 on Google Play and have no cracked apps.

The problem is that if “Nejtillpirater” recommends something it is either broken, immoral, against all common sense, an outright lie or closely associated with fascism.

Some of his solutions to petty crime entail abolishing burden of proof.
Others necessitate abolishing right of privacy.
Others yet again necessitate abolishing either the internet or personal computers.

And so I doubt even an Android fanboy could cast such a glaring condemnation on the iPhone as NTP’s tentative support.

      • JG

“Apple users actually think that developers producing great apps deserves to get paid.” “iOS users in general are more keen on paying for apps than Android users. This is a well-known fact”

Maybe I’m an outlier then (won’t be the first, nor the last), but this Android user has no qualms paying developers for their hard work in creating useful apps and/or services. In fact, I’d say Android user me has probably spent at least twice, maybe three times as much on Android apps than the former iPhone using me spent on iOS apps. Of course that’s all anecdotal and a sample size of 1 isn’t exactly able to be generalized to the general population, but based on my interaction with other ‘Droid-ers I don’t think I’m alone.

I think part of what may make it appear that Andoid users are less inclined to pay for apps is the fact that developers often release apps for free on Android while charging for their counterpart on iOS. Take, for example, Rovio’s Angry Bird franchise. Each game is 99 cents on iTunes, but the exact same game is free in the Play Store. Or checking out an old receipt, I note I paid $3.99 for The Weather Channel’s app for my iPhone, but got the same exact app for free on my Android. So when you compare iOS paid apps vs Play Store paid apps, there will probably be an imbalance favoring iOS.

      • Scary_Devil_Monastery

“the Apple users actually think that developers producing great apps deserves to get paid.”

Jailbreaking the Apple iPhone has become such a standard that today it’s rather surprising to see anyone who doesn’t. And there is (or should I say, was) such a demand for cracked Apple apps that separate installers were designed to handle and sync the cracked apps installed.

Whereas the Android market has grown by leaps and bounds but I have yet to see anything but a loose smattering of cracked android apps showing up.

So first of all, you are wrong. Apple users were apparently such a driving force of piracy that it started an industry of it’s own (You can’t see a tele shop around without also a sign offering jailbreaking).

And secondly, given how your outlook on IT has been so far, I doubt you’ve even managed to find the command interface on either phone – i still recall you tried to quip with YesTOPP about Linux command lines but couldn’t even parse the most basic of commands even when Google would have supplied a proper answer.

It wouldn’t be the first time you’ve demonstrably lied through your teeth about your knowledge of IT – or about law, for that matter.

And as for you managing to develop much of anything, no, seriously, I wouldn’t trust you to be able to complete a GOTO loop in basic.

    • Andrew me

Although a lot of people are writing Windows phones off, that in my opinion is a huge mistake, Microsoft has this determination that usually pays off , if you see how they rescued the xbox and if they have a weak windows release they just plow on through and get the job done creating something better.

That is if they see a big market, i suspect things like the Zune were left because phones do the same job with all the extras, who needs a media player when your phone is one.. If anything i hope Microsoft manages to get Windows 8 working , we need another decent competitor in the market to keep pushing Samsung to innovate, Apple is a waste of time the last time they innovated was when they released the 1st iphone and pad.

      • http://modmyi.com/forums/iphone-4-new-skins-themes-launches/740147-neurotech-hd.html#post5637502 Jay

As a designer I have to say you’re completely wrong about that last sentence. Have you ever opened up an Apple product? They’re beautiful on the inside. Their products are a masterful mix of art and science. True, other companies are catching up, but only because Apple is showing them how it’s done. Literally – competing companies have been dissecting and deconstructing Apple products for their own inspiration for years.

Many of Apple’s innovations aren’t on the surface.

I don’t see how you refuted his statement, Jay. You gave no timeframe or reference that would do so.

In fact, I read your statement and thought, “Okay the internal architecture is beautifully done, but is it just the same innovative architecture since iPad/iPhone 1? Andrew already addressed this.. It would make sense then that everyone else is catching up if they have to continue to improve while Apple sits on the same architecture for years.”

Not trying to blast ya, but I hope you can see what the matter is. It’s silly to call someone out on something, but just blabber on and not actually refute his point definitively.

        • Wally

Some could argue that Windows Aero interface was a direct response to OSX 10.3. It’s true that they are doing everything within their power to catch up to the industry.

It should be noted that Google bought Android OS outright from Android Inc. back in 2005 (??). People forget that a lot of the OSX and iOS features you see were derived from the little known Steve Jobs created OS called NeXT Step.

In the US, iOS came out about a year and a half before Android was being sold.

Given the timeline and the elements that OSX and iOS still carry from NeXT Step 3.0 (cooperative multitasking using RAM as a place holder in stead of continuously running an app in the background is a big one) , it is impossible to say Apple even remotely claim Apple copied Google’s Android.

        • What?!?

@ Wally… WTF are you rambling on about? I read and re-read every post up to your comment and cannot find one single comment claiming Apple copied Android

Hmm. I dont know. I think microsoft deserves a bit of credit for windows 8 and actually trying to do some original things for once.

      • Scary_Devil_Monastery

No. Apple started using patent law instead of innovation. That’s the way downhill. Either a new Steve Jobs comes along or their golden standard is rust and ruin in ten years.

Samsung tab 2 outperformed the iPad 2 in every area. Apple, having invented most of the field, is no longer able to match the rate at which other companies are outpacing them.

A standard isn’t “gold” anymore when it can not keep ahead of competitors.

      • HoHum

Apple took their design cues from Sony in their early days. Nothing’s new under the sun ;)

In fact, most of Apple’s current design ideas (credited to Jonathan Ives) were actually developed by Hartmut Esslinger before even the Lisa or Mac were ever launched. Check this out:

“Yeah, I can mostly agree with that. However, Apple’s products are far more than just ‘decent’.”

Galaxy Tab 2 outperformed iPad 2 by a large margin in all aspects. And was cheaper.

HTC One X and Samsung Galaxy S3 both tie with the iPhone 5 despite already being older by months.

When the hardware and software begin to tie but the flagships of one competitor is 50-100$ less than the other, it’s a pretty clear choice.
And bear in mind you can get smartphones capable of everything Apple has to offer in the mid-price range as well, getting almost every functionality at half the price of an iPhone.

Rolls Royce made great cars too.Still do. But I think you’ll have to agree it’s a decided niche market. And not exactly a performance brand.

        • aspind

Do a drop test on any if those cheaper products onto a concrete floor from about 2 meters up…then we will discuss the seemingly inflated prices Apple suggests for their mobile products.

Installous has saved me a lot of money over the years. A good percentage of App Store apps rely on strategic screenshots and descriptions – many times, only after you’ve bought the app to you realize how bad it is. Installous was a great way to determine quality before you buy.

Actually, because of Installous I bought lots and lots of apps I wouldn’t have otherwise. Without a way to try out apps before I buy them, the App Store is more akin to gambling. I’m way too poor to gamble.

Too bad. That was a glorious chapter in the jailbreak history.

  • BuddhaFacePalmed

Actually, don’t buy Apple products at all. They’re the prime example of a commercial monopoly gone rampant.

Oooo, i want to design a new app for Apple. Too bad every year they release a new iteration of iphone/ipad/ipwn so unless you can develop this amazing new app within the year, get ready to watch your budget spiral out of control. And then your app needs to be vetted for approval by Apple (seriously, why??). If it isn’t PG-13 or politically correct, you can kiss your app goodbye (sounds like gatekeepers from hell if you ask me)

Oh, and Apple products don’t allow Flash players because there’s a ton of free Flash-based games on the world wide web, so they don’t earn money of it (Still doesn’t sound like a commercial monopoly to you?). I bet Apple fanboys love to splurge because the Iphone 5 can only be charged with the Lightning port, so get ready to replace all of your old Apple cords and adapters.

Still, not convinced? Just ask Apple on why it spends billions of dollars against Samsung for infringing on Apple’s intellectual property: its patents, trademarks, user interface and style. (????)? I mean billions of dollars that can be used in R&D, innovations, heck might as well add charity into it.

    • Guy

Most apps developed for previous versions of iOS work just fine, I’ll take vetting over the crap load of malware infesting the official Google Play Store (if you can tell it apart from other Android stores that a lot of hardware makers block you from using). Flash for mobile sucks…sorry it’s true which is why support for it is dying even from Adobe. The 30-pin connector is old and where is it written that Apple HAS to use it forever or even move to Micro/mini USB? Replace the cords yes, the adapters (if they’re USB) no. Get over it. I didn’t buy an iPhone 5/iPad Mini because the 3rd gen iPad and 4S I already have work just fine. Not everyone is rushing out to buy whatever the latest iThing is just because it’s there.

On your last “point”. You defend your intellectual property because if you don’t it won’t be yours anymore.

      • BuddhaFacePalmed

Why bother defending? If other people are following your intellectual property, it means you’ve done something right and you’re ahead of the pack. In fact, you’re not just leading the trend, you’re CREATING trends. So, if you can spend that much money in defending your ‘IP’, then shouldn’t you be innovating and creating new trends so that the next Big thing would be you, instead of following others.

        • Guy

So don’t worry at all that someone is using your IP and selling it for cheap. Able to undercut you since they didn’t have to pay for any of the research or development of said IP? That’s OK since you’ll be known as a trendsetter! And that label is certainly worth more than making a profit which BTW is the reason all of these companies are in business

        • Scary_Devil_Monastery

The unbelievable part is that to “Guy” the open source market seems not to exist.

And no doubt people didn’t build their own garden furniture before IKEA either.

        • HoHum

          @Guy

But Apple are as guilty of this as everyone else. Except they’re using someone else’s IP and selling it expensive with their ‘label’ price tag.

      • Scary_Devil_Monastery

“On your last “point”. You defend your intellectual property because if you don’t it won’t be yours anymore.”

Apples victory over Samsung in the german markets was in essence, over “A rectangular communications device with rounded corners and centered glass screen”.

Intellectual “property”, by the way, is not “property”. It’s a restriction of it. And if Apple was a worthy competitor in the market they would compete using innovation instead of law.

Instead of doing that they defend their market position by throwing a patent portfolio of 20,000 patents of everything from how to hold a phone to glass being transparent at a judge and ask for an injunction against the competitor for a few months just while they launch their own product in order to keep competitors from the market. “Intellectual Property” is pure poison in the well of the open market. And the mechanism exactly like that of a planned economy where who is allowed to sell is dictated by the fevered imaginations of vested interests.

There already were viable options other than Installous. As it was the public face of cracked apps community, and was dead slow all the time, some were already using them. The only thing that will come out of this is that these other “faster” ways will become slower as people are now forced to discover them if they don’t want to “shell out their cents”.

more than anything, it’s yet another kick in the nuts for ‘sharing’ and a another ‘entertainment industry’ win. Apple are one of the biggest robbing fucking companies there is. after charging around double what any other manufacturer charges for similar hardware, then restricting people further on what they can and cant do on the legally purchased devices, adding extra charges on to the initial one, they then charge again for any app added to the device (all whilst paying the devs a pittance, in most cases!). why the hell people waste so much on the Apple name, i dont know. even the people putting the things together for Apple are treated like crap! profit before anything else, as usual! good old capitalist/communist societies we live in!

Take a breath inbetween. You’ll find that half of what you said is nonsense. And no I won’t bother to say where you are wrong because I won’t debate with mouth breathers

      • 7th_Guest

Of course you don’t. You’re an evolved, sophisticated species, above and beyond squabbling over such trivial matters; you buy Apple.

        • Guy

It has nothing to do with the tech I prefer and everything to do with not bothering to do a point by point argument against someone who’s mind is closed to begin with. He actually believes that because Company A makes more than Company B that it means Company A is more evil or has ulterior motives than Company B. Which in itself is nonsense so I don’t bother to try and refute his points because he’s an idiot to begin with.

You like Android over iOS? Or Linux or Windows over a Mac? Why should I care? If you want to actually discuss Apples failings (of which there are many) then bring them to the table without all noise and we can discuss them.

I’m not sure I’ll miss Installous that much. I always found it to be such a pain in the ass and half of the apps I’d try to dl wouldn’t would anyways. Try VSHARE. Search it through your ibrowser and install directly onto your device. Worked like a charm for my ipod Touch last night.

  • babiloe

I bought idevice because installous and the beauty of the apple collection apps.
The android apps is too rubbish for me especially the colors and the gui.
the wp8 is lack of apps like google map
    urrgh..

  • foff

Just my unscientific observation but a few years ago everywhere you looked you saw someone carrying an apple product. It was either a ipod or an iphone but now the devices are slowly becoming extinct. Almost no one wants an ipod anymore, a few still want an iphone and the ipad was an interesting fad. My daughter got one and it spent most of it’s time in a box where it would not get broken. It looked nice but did not actually turn out to be that useful.

This is actually an early indicator that apple is slowly sinking. After all what goes up must come down. I am sure itune card sales are way down as most including my family that has an apple product or two have no interest in buying any app. Not because we pirate but because we have no use for them. My son said last time he had an apple product he found four or five apps somewhat useful and the rest he had no interest in.

I think this group has seen the writing on the wall. Why waste time cracking something that no one wants or cares about.

  • Donato

Ir’s sad but to be honest I’m not really going to miss Installous as a I rarely use it, most apps are dirt cheap and tend to go free every so often, the only time I’ve really ever pirated apps are for games like World Ends With You which is very expensive and not available on Android, just like a whole bunch of top end iOS games, including the likes of Bastion which is probably the best indie game this year.

It’s not going to have any effect on iPhone/iPad sales, you gotta be on crack to think otherwise, right now there’s no jailbreak for Iphone 4S and iphone 5, yet they still sell millions of them every single day, the vast majority of people use iPhones for making phone calls, texting, email, social networking etc etc, the OS is boring, but it’s still rock solid and stable, which is really all that matters

    blablabla

From a point of view some will hate apple, some will love apple, but the botton line is that apple invented the touch smarthone, the hackers invented the store, apple copied it, hackers did their job again, nad they will do once again if they want, if they dont want you, me and everybody will buy apps, as they suppose to be bought.

Android, windows phone, they will never exist without iPhone, so for those that say sh1t about apple, think futher, be smart, look back before write your mind.

    • http://twitter.com/krozareq krozareq

Did you just put “hackers” and “Apple” in the same sentence?

    • BuddhaFacePalmed

I admit, Apple was the leading innovator in smartphones technology. But like every other monopolistic empire, once they were the top dog, they did everything in their power to prevent others from having the same pie. Don’t believe me, ask why Apple is spending billions suing Google, Samsung, HTC, and Microsoft for something already on the market for longer than 5 years

  • Reality check

Apples restrictionist policies suck bigtime. BUT, my jailbroken iPad 2 still works better, smoother then 99% of the competition, giving me more customizability and power. i download cracked apps (iOS apps are still WAY ahead of the competition), pay for those who deserve it. I cant talk for the iphone, but a jailbroken iPad is the best tablet device you can get. If you take the jailbreak away, then i agree with most people here, iOS is restricted crap, apple is dead and long live the (poorly coded but slowly becoming decent) Android.

RIP Installous, but there is allways cake. Appcake :)

“Piracy is a major problem for many iOS app developers, and there have been several instances of piracy forcing developers to remove their apps from the App Store. One such case earlier this month saw Hunted Cow shut down its multiplayer title Battle Dungeon after piracy rates of roughly 90% made it impossible to handle the game’s server load based on the revenue generated through legitimate sales.”

In this case the piracy affected also the legitimate users, due to the high server load not paid for.

    • Deebeedooh

So writing in server protocol feature that prevent pirate users from connecting was too much? Come on, even Minecraft has that.

I have both iPad and Android phone, and like them both for what I need them for. Jailbreak, non-jailbreak, iPad, iPhone, Android, Windows, Linux, people will always prefer and apply different things since everything is relative so at the end of the day who really gives a shit. Installous is down, there are other alternative apps for downloading cracked apps, so again who gives a shit. Hackulous was probably paid off to pull down Installous (the only logical explanation). The point is we are wasting time with insignificant events and dedicating too much attention and effort on details that offer nothing to humanity or to our world. To put it simply this is the name of the game so who really cares.

There are a couple of decent alternatives to installous.

I ain’t no saint and certainly no fanboy. I have pirated apps like crazy and have spent quite a few bucks on apps. I see this article has turned into a fanboy war and I have no interest in that.

This is sad news and I’m curious about the future of jailbreaking and non-Apple-approved 3rd party apps. To me, iOS without JB and the Cydia apps is a pretty bland OS. iOS in itself is an outdated OS. It certainly lags behind Android 4.2 in many ways, but the most important difference is the AppStore vs. Google Play Store. iOS has an infinitely better support and more polished apps. Both stores are full of junk, but it is really difficult to find decent Android apps compared to iOS.

I’m not planning on buying another Apple product for a while. I have been saving for Surface Pro or an equivalent Win 8 Pro tablet from other manufacturers. It’s the next logical step in the tablet world. I was one of the earliest adopters of iOS devices. The iPad, in particular, expanded and turned the tablet market into what we see today. There were tablets before just like there were smartphones before. But Apple’s marketing and ease of use made them mainstream.

Android has come a long way but the software support is lacking. Windows RT and phones need all the luck in the world to make an impression in the next 5 years. I think RT will eventually be discontinued as Microsoft’s move to enter the ARM market was misguided. The Pro tablets, however, are poised to become the benchmark in the tableting world if executed well.

So overall, it’s sad that Cydia has passed away. The developers there were excellent and continuously reminded Apple how things should have been done. They were widely used by many iOS device owners and added a lot of functionality to the devices. Installous had a better design than AppStore.

It was great while it lasted.

BitGamer tracker also shut down. The early news of 2013 aren’t quite what you’d call good news.

Yeh, what are the Natzi Gestapo going to do next? Take away all freedoms because it is for your own good? Oh, wait, that has already happened to a large extent. I am seeing more and more similarities between the U.S corporations and the S.S every day. Now that they control freedom of knowledge, a God given human rite, now, we will see how they use this to make sheep puppets out of all of us, oh, wait, once again, they have been doing it for many years. When will the people of the U.S catch a wake up and take back their God given freedom from these greedy closed source corporations that make more money than the G.D.P of a small country in one year? Apple, you suck so much, the only time I would ever use an Apple device is when I have to find something to stand on to reach a top shelf. The Android operating system is 7 times better than your backward inbred closed source getsapo CIA devices. You are actually biting the hand that feeds you. By closing everything off you are giving a more open and free system a massive advantage. And if this free open source happens to be Eastern based, well there you have it. The very fat macdonalds backsides you are trying to protect wil in the long run be sitting without a job because 85% of the world refuses to pay 10 000 dollars for a device that is only worth 5$. You cannot stop freedom, you cannot stop truth and you will never stop your comfey little upperclass life styles falling into the shitter. Good luck to you pigs and I hope you enjoy the reckoning, it has been coming for some time now.
