BitTorrent-Only Horror Movie Denied IMDb Listing

A film set to be released for free via BitTorrent has been denied a listing in the Internet Movie Database. The Tunnel is currently in production and despite pleas from the makers, IMDb won’t allow it on their site. The creators of this horror movie believe that because they have shunned an official distributor and chosen a BitTorrent model instead, this has put them at a disadvantage with the Amazon-owned site.

The TunnelThere is little conventional about the funding, creation and distribution model chosen by the makers of The Tunnel. Currently in production, this movie is being funded by the public who are buying frames of the finished movie for a dollar each. Once completed, it will be distributed for free using BitTorrent.

In order to drum up publicity for the forthcoming release, creators Julian Harvey and Enzo Tedeschi (who together form Australia-based Distracted Media) have been trying to get their movie listed on the Internet Movie Database. It has proven to be an impossible task.

Last week Enzo contacted TorrentFreak and explained the process he had been going through with IMDb for some time now and his frustrations at getting absolutely nowhere with the Amazon-owned site. Despite being submitted five times, in various correspondence with IMDb the site continually denied The Tunnel a listing.

In June, IMDb told the team that if a movie is not set up with a production company with a history of theatrically released movies, getting it listed at the early stages of development would not be possible. However, The Tunnel has backing from Zapruder’s Other Films which already have IMDb listings.

Undeterred by this setback, the creators decided to have another attempt at a listing once filming proper was underway, but all that resulted in was a further rejection in August.

Thanks for your new title addition to IMDb. Our title managers have recently examined the information which you supplied and it appears this title will not qualify for inclusion until it is in an advanced stage of production or completed, sorry.

The rejections continued, even though the team providing several trade magazine listings, news articles and other supporting material to show the film is legitimate. Then in September, and despite the Australian Director’s Guild recognising the movie’s online marketing campaign with an ADG Award nomination, IMDb rejected The Tunnel again saying that they can find no evidence to suggest the movie exists.

Enzo told TorrentFreak that he believes that it’s the movie’s distribution model which has caused this reaction from IMDb. The third rejection letter from IMDb says:

Hello. Please provide distribution info or evidence it will be released in 2010. Thank you.

“Seeing as we announced our distribution plan via torrents, a method that is completely within our control, we can’t see what ‘distribution info’ we could provide,” Enzo told us.

“There is no official deal in place to make that happen, as it isn’t controlled by a ‘distributor’ as such. The only conclusion we can reach is that in the absence of a ‘proper’ distributor, they won’t list us.”

Enzo believes that either IMDb are being difficult due to the chosen distribution path for The Tunnel, or their review process need to be looked at. Several other movies are listed on the database which don’t meet the site’s criteria (he believes The Tunnel does).

“The number of times we have been rejected is absurd, given that we address all major criteria for listing. I’ve helped out on student films over the years that have gone nowhere and have had an easier time getting listed,” he notes.

Of course, IMDb is owned by Amazon, so some might put two and two together and say that a BitTorrent distribution model might not be helpful to their business. Interestingly, it seems that the BitTorrent-based movie Pioneer One is also lacking an IMDb listing.

That said, with an open letter to IMDb now published by The Tunnel team, maybe they can bridge their differences and come to an amicable solution.

    !!!:NEWS ALERT:!!!

In the United States, a new law proposal called The Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act (COICA) was introduced last week, and there will be a hearing in front of the Judiciary Committee this Thursday.

If passed, this law will allow the government, under the command of the media companies, to censor the internet as they see fit, like China and Iran do, with the difference that the sites they decide to censor will be completely removed from the internet and not just in the US.

This is all about legitimising file sharing using torrents. Do you all remember when a movie called “Ink” became the most download movie on the Internet. The movies producers at first thought that people were taking their movie and not paying them. That was until they noticed that the DVD sales via their website were sky rocketing. They then went to various distributors and none of them would touch the movie. The distributor said that if they took “Ink”, which gained its popularity through BitTorrent, none of the major studios would use them as distributors again, because BitTorrent is used to share their movies.

I think there is a similar scenario going on here. IMDB are in partnership with all the major studios and they do no want to do anything to upset them. Giving this movie an IMDB page, would be seen by the studios as legitimising movies being shared over BitTorrent, and they won’t let that happen. They will try anything to keep their strangle hold on the movie industry.

The fact that it “IMDB” refuses to post a movie due to it being “free/on BT” shows that the internet is controlled too much by the greedy capitalist pigs.

I say we create our own private internet and cut the US any any other government/country out of the loop if they refuse to follow the “Peoples” rules.

Internet is open source information for everyone, freedom to learn, understand, and entertain without limitations. Its time for a change as ignorance such as this can not be allowed to continue.

you can find that information here about purchasing a frame for 1$ or more as seen here thetunnelmovie.net/Buyout.php

1$ a frame is really reasonable if you consider the entire world wanting to see the movie. They’re even considering putting people in the film those who have contributed a certain amount. Go check it all out. spread the word, perhaps maybe the film will reach it’s goal sooner than predicted. Cheers all.

This smells of shameless self promotion. All of my material is released through torrents and IMDB had no problem listing it. They even said themselves that they got their student films listed. What did they change in their submission entry between the student films and this one that IMDB didn’t like? I find it very easy to get things listed in IMDB, maybe they just need to pay attention to what they’re typing and less whining to media outlets.

It’s a story about Batman being killed and Robin going after the killer. IT’S A FUCKING 6 MINUTE FAN MADE FILM AND IT GOT LISTED! It’s not even a real film that will EVER get a full length feature produced.

  • Lothor The Evil

Oh yeah! IMDb can take a hike. What we need is a movie database that isn’t owned by some big corporation and will accept ANY movie title that can be proven to exist like The Tunnel and not discriminate against people who choose to distribute using P2P or other such methods.

The IMDB is run by assholes. They will ban people from posting on the message boards at the drop of a hat and won’t even explain why they did it. The admins delete tons of messages at the slightest provocation. The terms of service posted on the site mean absolutely nothing. They can and do ignore them on a regular basis. Every time they re-design the site, 90% of the feedback posted in the forums is negative, but yet they claim that everyone loves the new look and that the posters are only a tiny percentage. They promise tweaks and features (like being able to sort the results in chronological order) and then never deliver. The message boards have no search feature because they claim that there are too many boards to search through, which is bullshit because there’s no reason that they can’t have search limited to just the current board. The list goes on and on.

There is no oversight of any kind on that site. The admins are allowed to do anything they want and won’t explain any of their decisions, nor is any appeal possible if they decide to ban you.

Amazon.com claims that they have nothing to do with running the site, despite it supposedly being owned by them. Have a complaint about the site? Amazon won’t help you.

All of IMDb’s popularity went to the founder’s head, who now considers himself the king of his little domain.

As for the horrible new design; At least for the time being, you can still use the old design. Go into your account and then into the site prefs and check the box for old design. Enjoy it while it lasts though because eventually the dictators who run the site will remove that option and force everyone to use the crappy new format, no matter how many people protest. They seem determined to alienate as many existing users of the site as possible.

posted earlier about COICA. when this passes into law, the internet will be completely censored. have said before, it is all about control of the ordinary people. governments cant stand it when there is something available for free when they can get money out of it. that is where the entertainment industries come in. if the only ways to get a movie for example is to buy the physical copy or download for the same price, from movie company web sites, there will be money for the studios and taxes paid to the governments. everyone will be happy, except the public of course. but no one gives a shit about the public!! control and money are far more important!! TF, I think you need to update the post detailing the *FACT* that they were told exactly why their movie is being rejected, but instead they seem to want to ignore the advice. IMDb has rules in place about acceptance, it’s not being rejected because it’s a BT distributed movie, it’s being rejected because it doesn’t meet the minimum requirements and the makers of this movie refuse to do anything about it… Nothing more than a pathetic publicity stunt IMHO.

  • JB

You mean people still use IMDB? Why?

  • IMDB is the real deal

What a bunch of fickle minded idiots here. One day you worship IMDB and then the next day you start attacking it just because it denied some lame arse movie a listing.

“Who the hell cares about IMDB?” Are you kidding? Nobody cares about that lame movie but everyone cares about IMDB. Without that site, I wouldn’t have found half the movies I have seen in my lifetime.

You got a better alternative to IMDB? No and you will never have one. So STFU.

IMDB has every right to reject a listing of a movie which is not even in post production stage yet. You know why valid information about a movie’s distributor is sought by IMDB? It’s because without that information, any Joe, Harry like me can claim to be producing a movie and get it listed on IMDB.

And TF please write unbiased articles instead of making it seem like IMDB is the evil doer. There are a lot of sheepish people who are easily brainwashed into believing anyone who even remotely comes across as not supporting p2p is evil.

Uhh.. If Theyre releasing a film via torrents. How are they meant to provide screening/distribution information other than what they already have? It’s biased no matter which way you look at it.

Plus theyve already indicated that the project is well in to post production.

  • Sofa Analytic

This is obviously a highly politicized decision, as iMDB has huge revenue streams from, and is probably controlled by, the movie industry. It is sad that the movie industry has taken a negative attitude to the BitTorrent as a medium per se, even if the works distributed are perfectly legal. This decision is emotional, unjust and irrational.

  • sorin7486

also, Pioneer One doesn’t deserve a listing even if it were on TV for the simple fact that it’s a piece of crap… I don’t tolereate crap on TV and I won’t give it chance either just because it’s a BT distributed show, the same way I don’t settle for crappy software just because it’s free.

At the moment I myself can’t say if this movie is real other than what they say. Nothing stops them shutting it down in 2 weeks. Alas, my opinions are not important, as stated they were told why their listing is being denied and they do nothing but bitch and whine about it.

This has absolutely nothing to do with being a BitTorrent only movie.

A long time ago, people started a project to get people to donate $1 to be listed as a producer for a film called the 1 Second Film. The idea is that the film is a second long, but the millions of producers will result in two hour long credits.

This film has repeatedly tried to get listed on IMDB despite being in development for 5+ years and having no end in sight.

Here’s the Wiki page on the movie:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_1_Second_Film

IMDB will not list /any/ independent production unless it’s clear that the production is going to be completed and released. It’s not about distribution method, it’s about keeping amateur hour vanity projects off of IMDB and restricting it to actual released movies.

IMDB has a lot of issues and it’s not perfect and I have concerns about it being owned by Amazon and what kind of environment that creates, but this movie’s struggle has nothing to do with BitTorrent and everything to do with being an in development independent production, and secondary to that, the business model of having people donate money (presumably in return for some credit, which was the issue with The 1 Second Film)

When the movie is done and available, it will be listed, like every other released BitTorrent movie. I love TorrentFreak, but muckraking stories are only good when there’s actual muck to rake.

  • MacLeod
