Demonoid Tracker Is Back, Will the Site be Next?

It has been three months since the popular (semi)private BitTorrent tracker Demonoid went offline. Since then, there has been a lot of speculation about its future, and many feared that the site would never return. Totally out of the blue, however, the tracker is now responding again.

demonoidThe frontend of Demonoid is still hosted in the US, together with the popular Subdemon forums. Interestingly, the tracker – which has been offline for months – is now hosted in Malaysia, and has started to respond again, approximately 30 hours ago.

It is of course not clear what this all means, but without an official message from the Demonoid team, speculation has started. Could it be that the site has found a new host, and preparing a return? Many former Demonoid members are secretly hoping that this is indeed the case.

Last December, Deimos, the founder and main admin of what used to be one of the most popular BitTorrent trackers, posted a message on the Subdemon forums on the possibility of a return. At the time he wrote: “Money is an issue, but the real problem at the moment is finding a suitable place to host the website. There has been no luck there. And there’s some personal stuff I need to take care of that takes most of my time at the moment, and that does not help.”

For those who forgot, here is a recap of what has happened so far. The trouble for Demonoid started back in June, when the Dutch anti-piracy outfit BREIN started to put pressure on Demonoid and their ISP, Leaseweb. Deimos decided that the Netherlands wasn’t the safe haven it used to be and he to moved the site to Canada, which resulted in a few days of downtime.

Deimos never really told the administrators or members of the site exactly what was happening. Initially, most members assumed that there was some hardware failure, but after a few days it became clear that Demonoid was more or less forced to move. Maybe there could have been hardware failures too, who knows, but the outcome was the same – Canada here we come.

Relocating the servers to Canada initially solved the problems, but, by the end of September Deimos took Demonoid offline for the second time. Again, nobody knew what was going on until we found out that the CRIA was responsible for the downtime, which was later confirmed by Deimos. It turned out that Canada wasn’t the best choice after all.

After 5 days of downtime the site returned, now blocking all traffic from Canadian users in an attempt to calm down the CRIA. At first it looked like the storm was finally over, but on November 9th Demonoid’s users were welcomed by a disappointing message on the frontpage explaining that the CRIA was indeed responsible for the downtime.

So will Demonoid ever return? The fact that the tracker is back online, in a different location seems to suggest that there is something happening.

Update: February 20, tracker offline again after 3 days uptime.

Two good things arose from Demonoid being shut down:

    (1) I realized ho good a collection and collective Demonoid offered…

    (2) I learned what else was out there for the torrent-minded…

WHEN it comes back, I think they should keep it a little more private and enforce the ratios to edge out the leechers a bit more…

Yep private trackers are the way to go imo. As good as places like TPB are theres nothing better than being on a well seeded private tracker. Ive never once maxed out my speed on TPB, yet other private tracker sites im on I always get max speed. People are more willing to seed back because of the ratio limits.
The argument is there about not having a fast upload speed etc, but lets face it. If your on anything but adsl/cable nowadays then you shoulden’t be downloading massive files. I haven’t got an astonishing up speed but I make sure I give back at least 1:1 of what I take.

It’s cool that one of my favorite trackers is going back up again. I’ve been dying to put music and movies onto their site, but didn’t get the chance when the site went down in November.

Since it’s disappearance, I’ve been forced to float from torrent site to torrent site trying to find a replacement. ThePirateBay is “sufficient”, but it can never beat Demonoid.

I’m glad Deimos did not settle for taking up server space with the guys from ThePirateBay either. I think all of this media attention and popularity is beginning to get to TPB’s head and they’re forgetting the pirate code.

All of this “consolidation” of torrent sites and trackers to Sweden and TPB allowing sites to join up with them is not the pirate code. The first thing I learned was to decentralize.

It’s harder to stop a million spiders.

  • hmmm

I dont think it will come back to many law problems but if it does then it would be nice….

Well, the laws against piracy is really strict in the Malaysia region since they have so much trouble with it down there. Probably one of the largest piracy zones on earth. Putting a server like this down there is just asking for trouble. Sweden or Russia are both better choices, making this deal look more like a joke/fraud than anything else. I hope I’m wrong.

I have a friend who lived down there several years and the busts made by authorities weren’t exactly with silk gloves. The overall piracy problem is still huge, but they go very hard on individuals and small/medium businesses who can’t afford original licenses or know the right people to pay off to stay out of trouble.

I don’t know about hosting trackers like this one, but it all seems dumb considering the enforcements made against piracy in Malaysia, not to mention there are countries where this could be achieved pretty much legally.

Demonoid was one of three sites I relied upon for 99% of my torrents. The other two were TV exclusive sites though so Demonoid was my favourite source for almost everything else – it was particularly great for comics, books & movies, with fewer fakes than the widely used public sites, and when it went down nothing else *adequately* filled the void it left. Some sites tried but Demonoid left big shoes to fill.

Seems that all of the sudden TS went down and is no longer a website. Yesterday it said upgrading server, today its gone.

hmmm, was Deimos involved with torrentstorage?

  • Anonymous

    YEAH ._./

  • BTW…

It’s not the 1st time Malaysia has been using for hosting some questionable websites. In the past Hamas and Hizbullah have used Malaysia to host their websites.

From a legal point of view, Malaysia is NOT safe either. The Copyright Act 1997 gives the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs to ask the MCMC, via the Corrigendum-Communications and Multimedia (Compounding of Offences) Regulations 2002, to shutdown the tracker.

Of course, like everything Malaysia, there is no enforcement, even if the laws are there. Just witness the SMS scams that have trapped so many people, and the lack of teeth in implementing ULL and LNP.

I’d bet a fiver however, that it will be the cost of hosting, which is horrendously high in Malaysia, that will see Demonoid move from Malaysia, not the law.

Hope that Demonoid come back soon. It’s been long enough since the site went down….Demonoid is the best !
Have ever been and will ever will be.
    Come BACK SOON PLEASE….

  • Joxxy

Deimos prolly has to watch his step and be secretive about shit because of he anti piracy lobby which is growing into a giant pain in the ass.
Torrent users should take the example of anonymous and unite against them,we would so crush them.

  • anto

do you’s think we will still have our user names when it comes back?

  • asenine

i wouldnt see why not, pretty sure they backed the database before it was down

I can tell you now the MPAA owns the Malaysian gov.
Its a gov. that will take the side of who ever pays the most.
Its election time now so they are busy brainwashing voters. But once that’s over that tracker is going down

And don’t get me started about keeping people waiting for SEVERAL MONTHS for membership to open AS PROMISED, while at the same time allowing large amounts of needed membership slots to be taken up by scumbag leechers who maintain perpetual ratios in the 0.00-0.25 range. Yeah, god forbid any of those douchebags get kicked so good sharers can get in.

Uh, that’s probably because, you know, he doesn’t owe anyone an explanation or an announcement about what’s happening whenever the site goes down. I suggest you stay away if the site comes back up, that way you won’t have your panties up in a twist if a situation should arise where you believe Deimos owes you anything.

If piracy laws in Malaysia is strict it wouldn’t be one of the worlds largest piracy zones.
The fact that it’s a large piracy zone doesn’t have anything to do with the goverment going easy on the problem.

“Hey, 70% of all our digital media are pirated copies. Let’s ignore it and have tea.”

Piracy laws in Malaysia are strict – they haven’t always been, but they are now.

One of the reasons why piracy stays in Malaysia, and other countries, is corruption. The goverment have laws against piracy, but are easy to pay off.

tracert on inferno.demonoid.com came back to malaysia on the 19th

Today, the 21st, tracert for inferno.demonoid.com’s IP comes back to WASHINGTON D.C. USA.

    What’s up with that??

  • anonymous

could it be that the dns on demonoids domain still points to the old tracker ip which could have been overtaken by antip2p and they threw up a tracker on that ip in malaysia to see who connects to it ? possibility=

  • joe

I dont know, i am confused as to why it would have a malaysia ip address one day, and washington dc of all places the next day.

  • joe

Update, the tracker is once again not responding to tracert, who knows! Just come back demon!

  • Demonoid could be replaced by torrentstorage.com The new Demonoid

I am very happy to see that the Demonoid Web style of torrent access, has been revived by torrentstorage.com The site has used the Demoniod style for accessing torrents I thought Demonoid has returned
Very impressed with the site. It has a lot of new features that Demonoid did not have. I will enjoy watching this site grow. Lets wish the site the best of luck.

  • Matt

Great news – but I disagree with the person who said that they hope they take action against those with 0.3 ratios.

In my experience, sites which demand super good ratios are virtually always extremely un-user-friendly. I know so many people who have spent weeks seeding stuff on those kinds of sites only to still be banned because nobody wants to download it. You spend more time just trying to download crap you don’t want just as a ratio boosting exercise than actually enjoying the stuff you’ve downloaded!

The main thig to be said for private sites in reality is the sheer range of stuff they have – e.g. indie music with Oink, or 80s films with Demonoid. That’s what they have/had over stuff like the public trackers, not the seeding, which is usually fine even with isohunt.

I really miss demonoid. In all the time I was a member, I NEVER got a fake or virus filled torrent. I had no choice but to move to tpb when demonoid went down. Now, I have to worry about the bad torrents (and yes, I’ve found many) – fuck it , I’ll wait for demonoid to come back online.

btw, who are you that anyone owes YOU an explanation of what they’re doing? Were you employed there? Did you do all the work? Did Deimos start the site just for you, then magnanimously decide to allow the rest of us to join?
No, you arrogant prig. It was all free. Oh, you donated? So?!? Would you demand that Goodwill return your dirty panties just because they closed their office?

Whatever it takes – however long it takes, I’d like to think that Deimos is more worried about quality versus length of time (with masses of bitching cheapskates ;) ) getting his site back.

  • Amigaminer

How do we get to the new site????

  • osama aziz

    I can’t wait

  • Knowledgable

Word has filtered down that the authorities tracked down Deimos when he tried to move the site to Malaysia. A front was allegedly set up in Malaysia and Deimos fell in the trap. Word is the tracker was never up legitimately, only to track IPs for demographic information for analysis of the nature of the BitTorrent problem, and to disseminate IPs to the authorities in those countries interested in prosecution. This info came from a knowledgable source on the official #demonoid channel on irc.p2p-network.net. Stay safe, fellow P2Pers.

  • Anarchist

I hope that comment 217 is a rumor. Demonoid was one of the best sites. I haven’t found anything quite like it. They just need to leave us alone. I’m tired of these governmennts ruining anything that is good. They spend how much time fucking with us? They should be going after the real criminals. Or maybe even going after their corrupt selves!!!! I am patiently waiting for the long overdue return of Demonoid.
