With 2012 nearing its end we begin our annual look at the most-pirated entertainment titles across various categories, starting today with TV-shows. Game of Thrones comes out on top this year, followed by last year’s number one Dexter. Episodes of both shows are shared among millions of people, with airing delays and limited legal download options among the key reasons to pirate.

got With 4,280,000 downloads for a single episode, Game of Thrones has the honor of becoming the most pirated TV-show of 2012.

Over the years the number of TV-show downloads on BitTorrent has leveled off a bit, but this year we saw a small increase again.

The majority of TV-show piracy, more than 80 percent, occurs outside the US and lacking availability is the top reason why people turn to BitTorrent.

For chart leader Game of Thrones this is no different. Airing delays and HBO’s choice not to make it widely available online are two of the top reasons why so many people pirated the show.

Game of Thrones is particularly popular in Australia, where people have to wait a week longer than fans in the U.S. to view the show. Nevertheless, even in the U.S. hundreds and thousands are downloading the show for free, although many would love to pay for it if HBO offered a standalone HBO GO subscription.

In common with many branches of the entertainment industry, the challenge for TV companies such as HBO is to come up with a business model that allows users to consume what they want at any given time, without losing existing revenue in the process.

When that puzzle is solved worldwide the number of unauthorized downloads will be pretty much insignificant.

Below we have compiled a list of the most-downloaded TV-shows (single episode) in 2012, together with the TV audience in the U.S. The data for the top 10 is collected by TorrentFreak from several sources, including reports from all public BitTorrent trackers.

  Why make so much fuss about copying? I have a cable subscription (quiet cheap in my country @ 6 dollars per month with more than 200 channels) and I don’t watch Game of Thrones. And this is the case with thousands of more people. So u can consider that I gave my copy to others who downloaded it. I am actually PAYING for something I am not watching. Are they going to refund the money? No. So let others who want to watch it, copy it. It just a TV show.

It’ll be interesting to see the DVD sales numbers too – I think everyone I know who downloaded it now has the season 1 DVD, except a couple who are holding out for the “complete series” box-set in a few years time. Which is what I did with The Wire, and I did buy it in the end.

  Who said there were any problems downloading it? I can download Season 1 and 2 in 1080p before you can get to Futureshop and back with a retail copy. And I’ll have it without Ads – episodes play as soon as I double click. And I’ll be able to share it with friends by a simple Ctrl+C Ctrl+V, no fuss. Stolen != copied, sorry, artificial scarcity doesn’t work in the age of the internet. But it’s still fun to watch you try ;)

Rights holders arguments are all the same and stupid. If you downloaded it in a country that it isn’t available they have lost nothing. I can’t purchase it there ergo you couldn’t possible have lost a sale for it and it’s lack of availability is the right holders choice not the consumers. For places where it is available what is the difference between me putting it on my DVR or downloading it? Either way I have a digital copy and all DVR have addition storage so the need to delete is a moot point but you want to put me in prison for one and the other I’m a valued customer? Really? Pretty much all ISPs bundle, I have one so it is available and I have paid for the right to view it but I download anyway. Why? because I don’t want to waste 20 minutes for every hour I watch TV on commercials for stuff I’m not interested in. I’ve never bought anything based on a tv advertisement and most ads are regional to the station which in my case isn’t even in my country. So no I don’t want to ask my doctor about cialis and no I don’t want a useless home ed degree from some yank ‘college’ and no I haven’t had vaginal mesh surgery and need to sue it. Actually based on the amount of lawyers commercials it isn’t hard to understand why MPAA sues it seems to be the American past time.

  as i’ve said before, i don’t think they care about the films or tv shows. i think they are more concerned about the advertising revenue they make during its broadcasting. in the old days, they’d sell a show to another countrys tv station (advertising there would pay for it and make them a profit (not any more because of the internet) and make extra money that way. with the uprizing of the internet and tv stations failure to broadcast on a now unitied planet, we the people who consume thier output, want it as soon as its available at orogin. they fail us and, obviously, themselves by not doing so. to rectify this, we take steps to remedy this and BANG, its shared all over the internet.

I’m not surprised! I get Xfinity online, so I can watch the episodes for ‘free’, but Xfinity videos are of horrible quality – it seems as though they drop every 3rd frame in order to cut back on bandwidth use. The torrent versions don’t suffer from this degraded quality issue.

I just check Amazon out of curiosity, Game of Thrones is one of the most popular TV shows selling right now. Just because people don’t want to pay for HBO, doesn’t mean they won’t buy the show on DVD or Blu-Ray. They’re buying it.

In my opinion you can just see witch series is more popular outside the USA.
most of these download numbers don’t come from US-citizens.
Have a look at AMC’s walking dead, they actually air the episodes just a few days after release in Germany (full sync with german voice).
So this show have LOWER download numbers than TV-Views. There is no pirating problem there is a problem to give the shows to all who want to view it.

No surprise here. Game of Thrones is notoriously hard to get a hold of digitally and “legally” with most civilized countries eg. Australia having to wait for months while the internet gushes spoilers for them if they wait for it to come to expensive cable TV to be aired once a fort night. Little wonder many turn to piracy.

I tend to think the reason there are more d/l’s for GOT and Dexter is because they are on a pay tv channel. Sure, more viewers and less d/l for things like Big Bang, but they get broadcast for “free”.

If GOT was on something like ABC or CBS, I’m sure it would have 3 or 4x as many viewers and less downloads.

That no. 1 spot is pure garbage but i’m glad it wasn’t “How I Met Your Mother” that was no. 1 that show is pure retarded drivel !
I like “The Big bang theory” this season is turning out pretty funny.. waiting for Sheldon to bash Windows 8 on TV like he did with Vista LOL
Only other show i would watch is “Breaking Bad” and i have grabbed every episode from all seasons but still havn’t watched on of them yet lol

I recently Grabbed all of the “Fawlty Towers” ep’s havn’t seen them in ages :(
Also grabbing some other older shows right now because most of what is on TV is lame crap..

The Life & Times Of Tim (cancelled)

Ugly Americans (cancelled.. i talked to the lead actor and he told me basically)

The Office

I actually liked WAY more shows in 2012 but i won’t bother listing them all.
