The place where breaking news, BitTorrent and copyright collide

Historic: The Internet Protests Anti-Piracy Bills

January 18, 2012, will still be talked about decades from now. It is the day tens of thousands of websites, including giants such as Google, Wikipedia and Reddit, decided to take a stand against what they see as a hostile takeover of the Internet by Hollywood, the recording industry, and other rightsholders. As it faces two draconian anti-piracy bills, the free Internet is at stake. Whatever the outcome may be, history is being made today.

tf-strikeAt TorrentFreak we’ve been covering copyright battles for more than half a decade. When a new anti-piracy bill emerges, wherever in the world, there has always been a push-back from civil rights groups and Internet users. Unfortunately, these protests are almost exclusively ignored by lawmakers.

Could this pattern be broken today?

Judging by the scope of today’s protests it’s now or never. In the coming hours hundreds of millions of Internet users will be confronted with blacked out pages and similar “strikes” in opposition to the PIPA and SOPA bills, and if enough people take action the people in Washington may just listen.

The first signs are positive, but there’s still a long way to go. Here’s how YOU (corporate pawns) can help:

- Tell Congress you oppose PIPA/SOPA.

- Not in the US? Email the State Department.

- Call your Senator.

- Leave your computer and visit a Senator.

- Discuss, share and inform others about the bills.

For those who are wondering, TorrentFreak is not going dark. Our purpose has always been to inform the public, whether it’s the latest news or a call to action like this article. We believe we can contribute and achieve more by keeping the site online than to black out completely. That said, we are alerting all visitors to take action through the excellent censorship script put together by FAT LAB.

To save an impression of today for future generations, we’ve listed below a few of the many protest pages being run today. Did we miss a good one? Paste a link in the comment section and attach a screenshot!

Google

Google has blocked its logo to protest PIPA/SOPA and added a link to a resource page where people can take action.

google strike

Demonoid

Demonoid, one of the largest BitTorrent communities, is going dark completely, with a nice spotlight effect.

demonid

Firefox

Firefox users will be welcomed with a dark themed default home page today, alerting people about the looming PIPA/SOPA threats.

Reddit

The online community Reddit will point the public to a resource site where they can take action.

reddit

Wikipedia

Wikipedia will be completely inaccessible for 24 hours, except the pages about censorship, PIPA and SOPA, of course.

WordPress

WordPress is joining the protest as well, and has decided to censor itself today.

wordpress

Minecraft

Minecraft is protesting as well, but in red with the tagline “PIPA & SOPA, How About NOPA.”

“Some technology business interests are resorting to stunts that punish their users or turn them into their corporate pawns, rather than coming to the table to find solutions to a problem that all now seem to agree is very real and damaging,” said former Senator Chris Dodd, the chairman of the Motion Picture Association of America.

“It is an irresponsible response and a disservice to people who rely on them for information… A so-called ‘blackout’ is yet another gimmick, albeit a dangerous one, designed to punish elected and administration officials who are working diligently to protect American jobs from foreign criminals.”

        You so scared.

        • Anon

Yes they are SCARED, scared to loose their jobs and lives. Most of the people working as “middle men” have no other skills. The producers/artists will go on forever but not the middle men they are doomed and they know it. It is those people who want laws not aritsts.

The easy solution is the tech companies to group together and buy out hollywood on mass. Scrap all the old minds who hanker for the 1960′s business model. Scrap all the over 50′s out the door who are trying to be in the middle. Take over the middle role more efficiently artist funding and production costs and collect money by asking for smaller amounts but capitalising on their huge audience and easy of collection using their technology. They need content they will now have to buy it. Most of the middle-men of Hollywood will go for it and retire somewhere and die off hopefully. There is no point pirating if Google throws a movie at you for $1 a pop.

Simply put until the techs buy out hollywood this will NEVER end as hollywood cannot solve this in the decade they have been trying they have made it worse and worse and worse…they sue this gets in the news more people get on board…they scram but if you don’t have some laws it is too easy…it already is too easy…and all their silly comparisons to theft, drugs and child porn are so far out there they are making a mockery of themselves and more people get on board…then in comes tech companies who help to facilitate and makes millions then more get on board…not going to be solved but these clowns is it when now they fancy shutting the USA out the global tech business to let China run riot!!! Fools the whole lot of them.

One way to bypass DNS blocking is to use a site’s IP address. Someone on TPB created a torrent/streaming IP list, search for:
      Torrent sites and Ip addresses

      • Lindsay Lewis

still cant get on demonoid using ip address still comes up with sopa thing oh well will have to wait it out

        • Haylel

That’s because it’s not a DNS block. A DNS block would make it so when you tried to go to demonoid.com it would time-out and never connect. The “SOPA thing” is what demonoid IS right now, you can’t get around it because there’s nothing to get around, working as intended. If the sopa passed and started blocking websites, THEN you would enter the IP and still be able to get to them.

Why hating on Google so much? You should be happy!! Now if you should be mad about anything it should be Facebook and twitter for not doing shit. It makes me wonder whose side Facebook is really on and that’s why i left. As for twitter the founder should be sitting in a corner banging his head for not taking part it’s rather selfish of him.
But in your best description of “pussy bitch” let us know what you mean i see it loud and clear that Google being the #1 used site worldwide that posting awareness on the homepage to link to a petition speaks out MORE THAN FACEBOOK AND TWITTER combined. it shows whose really on our side.

I HAVE BECOME VERY ANTIFACEBITCH TODAY AND REALLY HATE MARK ZUCKERFUCK!!!

      • http://twitter.com/CheapassFiction AeliusBlythe

Well said. I haven’t heard much from FB, but I can’t see Twitter in the same light since seeing this quote from the CEO:

“Closing a global business in reaction to single-issue national politics is foolish,”

As if this REALLY only affects one nation?? Really? Does anyone actually think that this does not affect individuals around the globe? Apparently they do. Moron-i-tude.

But, yeah, while we see the courage of certain site, the cowardice of others has become crystal clear.

        • Ven

No I think Dick Costolo meant that single-issue politics (not politics of a single nation) are not worthy of blackouts.

It’s a dick stance to take anyway, probably worse than not saying anything at all. But his hands are really tied on stuff like this: Twitter’s business model is a glorified quadruple mortgage debt scheme that keeps his balls in a vice until the end of time, so he really has no control over the Twitter platform.

        • http://www.twitter.com/echoman74 echoman

Absolutely it doesn’t just affect us but the globe for the fact that when one country stand the lead in censorship the rest will follow.

      • CLL

I think that it’s best for Twitter to stay open today, as this gives people a way to communicate to each other about SOPA and PIPA. Being able to tell your friends and followers about something is a lot easier when the sites that you use to do this aren’t blacked out.

        • Ven

I am assuming this is why Facebook did nothing as well. Word of mouth (which works like a charm on sites like Twitter and Facebook) are far more convincing than Facebook trying to tell us they are looking out for all of us.

        • http://www.twitter.com/echoman74 echoman

well it’s amazing and i love twitter but sorta pissed but even so every other tweet and every other user has an anti sopa on their pic. i did it but wouldn’t want to claim being the first to do so but it’s amazing. As for faceshit i still hate mark zuckerfuck. http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/183596_803217174181_4_41228199_8332618_n.jpg nuff said.

No blackout from Facebook & Twitter is good – but I’d like to see some awareness notification on their site, albeit small.

Scenario. Joe searches regarding his STD on google – gets a black box showed onto his face. He doesn’t think about this more and continues on. Wikipedia is (usually) the first result and he enters – now wikipedia has a total blackout so he can’t miss it. “Wow, what is this?” He reads about it, or watch a movie and now he’s going to tell all his friends about this. How? Facebook and Twitter.

        • http://www.twitter.com/echoman74 echoman

No, neither SOPA nor PIPA is dead. On January 17th, SOPA’s sponsor said the bill will be discussed in early February. There are signs PIPA may be debated on the Senate floor next week.”

Interesting read. Let me tell you about the backdoor. There is currently a new bill moving through Congress that allows the President to strip an American of citizenship without due process. Do some Google-fu and you’ll find the bill.

      • Ven

The Enemy Expatriation Act can strip nationals (but not citizens) of their nationality. In other words, non-citizens who live in the U.S. can lose the right to be here (essentially get deported).

As nationals are not citizens, all of the “Won’t apply to citizens” clauses in legislation like the NDAA doesn’t protect nationals anyway.

    • Anonymous

Obama and the NDAA as noted below.I no longer trust Obama to do the right thing and if he thought so as a man and a decent Constitution loving one he would come right out with a Speech to the American People. He would explain the issue and say he is against doing this.

i sincerely hope the protests have the desired effect but the problem is, those that want these laws brought in will not stop until they get them. there has to be ways of stopping them once and for all. surely that has to be to stop politicians from receiving contributions from industries under the guise of lobbying, protest further by stopping purchasing the various products of those industries (hit them in the pocket!) and get the ridiculous copyright laws that exist now repealed and re-written to suit the digital age and the needs of all parties!

“…Could this pattern be broken today? … ”

Not to rain on anyone’s parade, but most of the mainstream coverage has been pretty negative. It’s been the “We don’t think Wikipedia (et. al. ) should take a political stance!” or the “Bu-bu-bu-but they’re not supposed to take a po-po-po-political stance!”

The wide ranging coverage of these protests is abhorrent. The mainstream media seem to be doing their darndest to make sure this protest comes to naught. But I don’t believe it will, of course. I don’t believe it will be a waste. Somewhere, there must, in the millions of people visiting Wikipedia, Reddit etc. people who wil sit up and listen to these warnings. It is not a waste. But there are definitely people trying to waste it.

This IS one of the most impressive online protests, coordinated by well-respected business entities, but will they be listened be to?

    • Guest

Well, the mainstream media is literally owned by copyright gangsters, so… Yeah. Shouldn’t be too surprising.

True, but for access to something like a torrent announcing forum or portal site via a web browser (these are the kinds of “rogue” sites being targeted), when many domains are hosted at a single IP address, the browser must inform the server at that IP address which domain it wanted. Browsers currently just use whatever you asked for in the URL, so entering an IP address instead of domain name there probably won’t work unless the site has been configured to serve up the web page for that one domain by default. Any “absolute” links on the site that explicitly refer to the domain would still not work.

Well that was dumb. The 1 day blackout is a protest and to help educate those who might not know and promote awareness of a very serious issue. If they choose to keep their mouths shut it could potentially become permanent. I’ll take a minor inconvenience over ignorance any day.

Do you really believe what you just read on this web site?

How do you want us to trust the authorities after all the violations of the constitution they are guilty of?

    Some examples:

    1) Occupy Wall street: What about the right to peacefully assemble? What about all these illegal assaults and batteries committed by the police officer on peaceful demonstrators, journalists and even sometime bystanders? What’s about all these unlawful arrests? The law give the right to the demonstrators to resist by force any unlawful arrest conducted by any police officer (1). The cops are so far lucky that no demonstrator has so far use this right. In occupy Phoenix 50 militias came with guns to protect the demonstrators: the police did not even dare to show up!

    2) Gun law: Any law that forbid or restrict the possession such as the requirement of a permit or forbidding citizen to carry any weapon concealed or not is a flagrant violation of the US constitution (2). and for those who want to make some BS about this see note (3)

    3) The right to a trial by jury? O ya the plea bargain agreement totally anti-constitutional because it is use to evade the right to a trial by jury (4) .

    4) The right to a fair trial. Oh ya cherry picking the jury! The one with the most money win! (4)

    5) Cruel and unusual punishment and excessive fines? The indefinite detention torture and assassination in Guatanamo and elswere. Where are the prosecutions? Joel Tenembraun and Jennie condemned to pay million of dollar to the music industry. Are you fucking kidding me? (5)

    6) . . .

    7) . . .

    . . . .
There is a lot more but it is getting too long. The bottom line is that it is time to dismiss this abusive government. There is some constitutional mechanism to do just that. Replacing Obama and changing the majority in congress is not going to do it because our government is irreversibly owned by corporations.

    NOTES
    (1) “Citizens may resist unlawful arrest to the point of taking an arresting officer’s life if necessary.” Plummer v. State, 136 Ind. 306. This premise was upheld by the Supreme Court of the United States in the case: John Bad
    Elk v. U.S., 177 U.S. 529.

    (2) A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed. U.S. Constitution amendment 2.

    (3) “All laws which are repugnant to the Constitution, are null and void.” Chief Justice Marshall, Marbury v. Madison, 5, U.S. (Cranch) 137, 174,176

“Where the meaning of the constitution is clear and unambiguous, there can be no resort to construction to attribute to the founders a purpose of intent not manifest in its letter.” Norris v. Baltimore, 172, Md. 667; 192 A 531.0.

    (4) In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the assistance of counsel for his defense. U.S. Constitution amendment 6.

    (5) Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted. U.S. Constitution amendment 8.

    And finally:

“This constitution, shall be the Supreme Law of the Land; and the judges in every state shall be bound thereby, anything in the constitution or laws of any state to the contrary notwithstanding.” U.S. Constitution, Article VI, paragraph 2.

“The Constitution is a written instrument. As such, its meaning does not alter. That which it meant when it was adopted, it means now.” South Carolina v. United States, 199 U.S. 437, 448 (1905).

“The primary principle; underlying an interpretation of constitutions is that the intent is the vital part and the essence of the law.” Rasmussen v. Barker, 7 Wyo. 117; 50 p 819.

        “You are just ranting.”

      1) The right to peaceably assemble has restrictions that the OWS protestors were violating. When sanitation hazards or safety hazards are created, the assembly is no longer peaceable.

      2) Federal government shouldn’t be allowed to create or mandate the creation of any weapons control laws. Period. The federal government shouldn’t legally be able to prevent me from buying surface to air missiles according to the second amendment, which was unanimously put in place to check the power of the federal government.

You cite Plummer v. State, 136 Ind. 306. but do so incorrectly. Plummer v. State was a ruling from 1897 that specifically stated self-defense was allowable if an arresting officer used excessive force for the situation. It’s quite a dated ruling, as Plummer was waiving a revolver around (which was not illegal), was struck from behind, and then killed the arresting marshal and was found to be within his legal rights. Good luck doing that in this day and age.

But yes, our Constitution is non-functional at this point.

      • JudgeDreed

BOWL SHIT! ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?

        CAN YOU READ THIS?

“Where the meaning of the constitution is clear and unambiguous, there can be no resort to construction to attribute to the founders a purpose of intent not manifest in its letter.” Norris v. Baltimore, 172, Md. 667; 192 A 531.0.

“You cite Plummer v. State, 136 Ind. 306. but do so incorrectly. Plummer v. State was a ruling from 1897 that specifically stated self-defense was allowable if an arresting officer used excessive force for the situation.”

        Read this again:

“Citizens may resist unlawful arrest to the point of taking an arresting officer’s life if necessary.” Plummer v. State, 136 Ind. 306. This premise was upheld by the Supreme Court of the United States in the case: John Bad
        Elk v. U.S., 177 U.S. 529.

We are talking here about unlawful arrest meaning an arrest without probable cause and this is the case here since the arrested citizen were exercising their right to peacefully assemble.

Moreover even if you were right, meaning the arrests were lawful, the officers might still get it legally since assaulting a peaceful and defenseless citizen with batons, pepper spray and rubber bullets would definitively qualify as “excessive force”.

By the way it is not just the FEDERAL government that “shouldn’t be allowed to create or mandate the creation of any weapons control laws.” Any governments or institution or organization or person within the US or the US sovereignty or within any territory under the control of the US government shall not be allowed as well because this will infringe the constitution.

        Finally about the “non-functional Constitution”.

They can be no “non-functional Constitution”.

“All laws which are repugnant to the Constitution, are null and void.” Chief Justice Marshall, Marbury v. Madison, 5, U.S. (Cranch) 137, 174,176

“The general misconception is that any statute passed by legislators bearing the appearance of law constitutes the law of the land. The U.S. Constitution is the supreme law of the land, and any statue, to be valid, must be in agreement. It is impossible for both the Constitution and a law violating it to be valid; one must prevail. This is succinctly stated as follows: The general rule is that an unconstitutional statute, though having the form and name of law, is in reality no law, but is wholly void, and ineffective for any purpose; since unconstitutionality dates from the time of its enactment, and not merely from the date of the decision so branding it. An unconstitutional law, in legal contemplation, is as inoperative as if it had never been passed. Such a statute leaves the question that it purports to settle just as it would be had the statute not been enacted.” “Since an unconstitutional law is void, the general principals follow that it imposes no duties, confers no rights, creates no office, bestows no power or authority on anyone, affords no protection, and justifies no acts performed under it…. A void act cannot be legally consistent with a valid one. An unconstitutional law cannot operate to supersede any existing valid law. Indeed, insofar as a statute runs counter to the fundamental law of the land, it superseded thereby. No one is bound to obey an unconstitutional law and no courts are bound to enforce it.” Sixteenth American Jurisprudence, Second Edition, Section 177.

“Where rights secured by the Constitution are involved, there can be no rule making or legislation which would abrogate them.” Miranda v. Arizona, 384 U.S. 436, 491.

“If the legislature clearly misinterprets a constitutional provision, the frequent repetition of the wrong will not create a right.” Amos v. Mosley, 74 Fla. 555; 77 So. 619.

In short this mean that anyone trampling the constitution and as a result cause injury to third parties is a criminal that should be prosecuted. There is a lot of criminals right now patrolling the city street around Occupy-Wall-street right now and a lot of criminals on the wrong side of the bare.

Sooner or later scores will be settle.

I live in the UK. How about the USA getting rid of the death penalty. We got rid of the death penalty decades ago and society hasn’t collapsed. This SOPA bill is typical of the knee-jerk reaction of American government. I mean I like a good USA action movie but I really wish that Americans would stop doing dramatic “big-sweeping” things. Rather than introducing SOPA here’s a small list of things I think the US government should do:

    1) Get rid the death penalty.
    2) Close Guantanamo Bay (10 years without a trial – just like Stalin!).
    3) Stop putting the whole of the Muslim world into “stress postion” because of 9/11 – its a naive person who thinks every every person born in a Muslim country doesn’t eat pork. Bullshit – Millions of Hindus eat cows and millions of Americans who were raised in a Christian society don’t believe in God. If you think everyone in Iran is a practicing Muslim then I can tell you thats wrong. Irans got the lot – Fundamentalists, the “not-bothered either way” and Darwin Atheists.

BTW not anti-american government or people – pro-american when they do great things like invent the internet but a bit puzzled why they can’t see the benefit of American culture (films, music, tv shows, american books and authors, etc) being spread around the world through file-sharing. You can tell they are a young country because they don’t know how to react to this. I’d say take it in your stride. Did you know that one of the biggest selling authors in India is Shakespeare:

“To be, or not to be: that is the question:
Whether ’tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles”

    (opening of Hamlet)

I had my site go dark for 23hrs (started at 12:00 UK time yesterday) I was looking at the stats and it was hopefully fairly effective in terms of people clicking on the http://americancensorship.org/ link. I had 318 people actually click it. I think that was also one of the important parts of the protest; getting the message across to people.

Incidentally, if you want some other screen grabs from peoples protest pages around the web, I have compiled quite a lot of them here. They are yours to grab as you want.
