The place where breaking news, BitTorrent and copyright collide

I Know What You Downloaded on BitTorrent….

Most people know that BitTorrent is far from anonymous, but seeing all your recent downloads listed on a public website is still quite a revelation. This is exactly what Youhavedownloaded.com does. The developers of the site want to make people aware of the public nature of BitTorrent, and are currently working on a more anonymous version of the leading file-sharing technology.

So what have you downloaded lately?

If you’re not using BitTorrent through a proxy or VPN, there’s a good chance that the rest of the world can see without asking.

YouHaveDownloaded is a new Russian-based service that claims to track about 20 percent of all public BitTorrent downloads. However, they go a step further than just collecting IP-addresses and file-names by exposing all the harvested information to the public on their website.

People who visit the site immediately see their download history, as far as it’s available in the site’s database. In addition, they can also search for files or IP-addresses to find out who’s downloading what. At the time of writing the database has information on 51,274,000 users who together shared 103,200 torrents.

TorrentFreak got in touch with Suren Ter, one of the site’s founders, to find out why they decided to create this spying tool.

“We just want to remind people that the Internet is not a place to expect privacy,” he says. “Nowadays many people use it without understanding what information they leave behind. Also, even those who understand choose to ignore it quite often.”

torrent

The Russian developers created the site partly as a wake-up call. Those who don’t want this kind of information to be public should take steps to anonymize their traffic, and do that right. This message is also reflected in the site’s ‘privacy policy‘.

“Baby, this is the Internet. There is no such thing as privacy around here. You are sitting in the privacy of your own house, clicking links, reading stuff, watching movies. It may seem like you are pretty much alone, but smart nerds are watching you. They watch your every move. You are not human to them. You are a target — a consumer,” it reads.

Jokes aside, the site does indeed make people aware of the public nature of BitTorrent, something that can’t be stressed enough. Of course not everyone will be happy to see that their information is being exposed, so the developers also offer an option to de-list an IP-address.

Apart from exposing download habits the developers are also considering the creation of a more private file-sharing protocol. They already have a theoretical concept based on Bitcoin’s technology, but a workable piece of software is still very far away.

“The general idea is similar to what Bitcoin does. The key is to have an anonymous and reliable identity for each peer, and a Bitcoin-like signature chain algorithm will help,” Suren said.

The developers are currently trying to find out how viable their idea is, and then they’ll decide whether they should continue working on it or not. For now, they’ll keep on tracking dozens of millions of downloaders, for all the world to see.

Update: For those who have dynamic IP-addresses the service is obviously going to show content that someone else has downloaded.

They do now, and i’m sure they’ll be adding your ip.

They get ips by querying trackers, they don’t look at ips to get their bittorrent traffic, and they couldn’t do it without putting in special effort.

        • http://henka.tumblr.com/ Henrik

and they watch DHT so they get the unique machine ID, so even if you are one of thousands on the same IP you are uniquely identified.

        • Guest

even if they did watch DHT, who says he is using it? DHT is prohibited on private trackers and should therefore be left disabled to avoid ghostleechers.

Hahhaha … my (dynamic) IP from ISP is clean…

but my VPN IP has been a very naughty boy (and has terrible taste).

I’ve got a couple of hundred torrents active and it only showed Simpsons season 22 and FalconFour’s Ultimate Boot CD v4.5

If that’s all they can see I’ll download more!

      • Boring_gordy

same here, i only have 1 torrent showing; had to get something from the pirate bay cos i couldnt find it anywhere else, i did grab 5 or 6 from there , but it only showed 1, and i didnt even download it all – not any seeds. typical for the pirate bay though, load of crap

and they don’t see what i have downloaded

    • Anonymous

No records on me either despite all my downloads.

My concern in this is that scammers can use such data to con money out of people but thankfully they cant connect IP to a physical address.

      • Asaky

People have already been doing this, but they make up fake data like say you downloaded obscene porn then say you either pay us $600 to make it go away or we take you to public court. You cannot fight them even if you win as the damage is already done so you just have to pay them.

      • http://twitter.com/icanhazsake Ninja

That. My ip is there for a few stuff I got. I mostly use put.io so most of my traffic is hidden =D

Interestingly my phone ip has freakloads of downloads associated o.o
Some1 raped the cellphone connection at some point =DD

But I couldn’t care less if it wasn’t. I use put.io because it seeds back the content much faster than I can and I can keep my up free because unfortunately ISPs nowadays give 3187423986590 mbit download with 1 mbit upload. So if you upload your speed goes boom.

Hopefully the legal blackmailers won’t stick to it like bees to the honey…

  • http://cyberkiller.pip.verisignlabs.com/ Cyber Killer

I just hope they also monitor all legal torrent trackers liker jamendo, vodo.net and various linux distro trackers – this way it could be a good way to promote to legal use of torrents and show many ppl that torrent != piracy.

What’s the matter? You’re brave enough to steal music, movies and programs but only because you thought you weren’t going to get caught? Well whoever told you that was completely wrong and now your information has gone public. Are you afraid of media companies finding out that you’re a pirate or are you afraid of your friends finding out exactly what you’ve been downloading? Whatever your reason may be, the internet is no place for secrets. Even if you use every precaution in the book, there’s always a chance that someone like us will figure out what you’ve been up to. Because, the reality is, if man made it…man will get around it…and man will figure out how to exploit it. It’s just human nature.

Anyway, like we said before, luck is on your side today because we’re actually nicer than we let on. I never said we wouldn’t bust your chops about it, but at least we’re offering you a chance to redeem yourself — The details can be found after logging in to your Facebook account.

Cool. They have nothing on me. Thank You Peer Block!

    • Grumpygit

Peer Block has absolutely NO effect on this.

IP blockers DO NOT stop trackers announcing your IP address to anybody that requests a list of IP’s in the swarm.

The reason they have nothing listed for you?……..you’re in the 80% of traffic not tracked.

      • Anonymous

When I said Peer Block, I meant a customised version based on the code for peer block that also acts as a VPN when the program is in use, it directs all my traffic though the server.

  • Spunky

      • Anonymous

With public trackers there is added safety in numbers.

Like wildebeest crossing the river only a few will be taken down and eaten by the crocodiles. Doing the same in small groups leads to a much higher percentage of death so the larger your swarm the better.

    • http://thegift73.wordpress.com/ Richard Gailey

Depends who else is using your connection. Is your wireless secure?

      • JohnnyDoe

Don’t have a wireless router and download everything off usenet/astraweb using their ssl encripted servers. The six movies they listed that I “downloaded” last month with bittorrent I’ve never even heard of.

        • http://thegift73.wordpress.com/ Richard Gailey

Fair enough. Sounds like they messed up. No one else uses your connection? Could be that your IP is dynamic and it’s showing the last use for whoever was allocated that particular address, but can’t see that being it.
Wouldn’t worry about it anyway, as it sounds like the way the site matches torrents to the IP is dubious to say the least.

        • Death

GFY! Your stupid website is so fake! Get a life dumbass!

    • Mark

Not necessarily. Bittorrent clients can report any IP address they like to a tracker. It’s easy enough to configure your client to send a fake address, thereby avoiding tracking. Downside is no other peers can find you, so if everyone did it the network would break down.

    • Anonymous

I read some trackers insert fake IPs. If someone is sued because ‘their IP was on the tracker list’, then they can claim that they were one of the random IPs.

    • Anonymous

Many people who downloaded are not listed, and many who are listed did not download. I guess the site works most of the time, but fails a lot of times too, like in your case. You can’t be sure your blocklist works because this website is not reporting anything.

      • http://www.twitter.com/echoman74 echoman

True that but i rarely use torrent. I think the last time i used torrent was about a week ago. But nothing showed up on this site. Either way the site might need some more work or my linux is really set up good that i don’t have anything showing publicly.

        • Grumpygit

Don’t kid yourself, You most likely fall within the 80% of traffic not tracked.

IP blockers have no effect on this, if you connect to a tracker your IP address will be announce to anyone that asks for it. If it didn’t, you wouldn’t be able to download.

        • http://www.twitter.com/echoman74 echoman

Well if I’m the 80% is because i don’t download nor use torrent. Mainly people get caught up in the game because of torrenting. My downloading has gone down very much.To be honest. I actually want to torrent my own work.

This is gonna be fun with IPv6 when everyone’s IP changes every hour. I already got a native IPv6 connection with a /64 subnet (great service from XS4ALL (ISP)) and when I look in cmd.exe:

    netsh interface ipv6 show address

I can see the lease for the randomly generated address is exactly one hour.

    • Anonymous

But you’re router/modem will request the same IP when the lease is up, no? Without specifically asking for a new IP, it’ll just hand out the same one (depending on the ISP).

      • Anonymous

I’m not sure actually… It is common to have more than one IPv6 address at a time, even though I see no good reason (my laptop for example had 2 DHCP-obtained addresses plus a static one at the same time, while I only set the static myself).
Perhaps the router would be accessible by [subnet_provided_by_ISP::1] as well, but use another -randomly generated- address for all connections it initiates to increase privacy.

Hmm, from the other side, the client’s global address is used instead of NAT, so it might actually not be needed for the router to use a random one.

Well if someone knows the answer to this, I’d love to hear it ;)

        • Anonymous

Realistically (and on topic), I don’t think it’ll matter much anyway. Dynamic IP addresses are tracked by a simple “accountname = IPaddress @ time” system. The trick is to find an ISP that doesn’t keep logs or encrypts all traffic. :P

        • Sfasd

It still only points to a house. Not to the person who was in that house. Or next door, or in the car outside, or in the cafe below. Or just walking by with a torrenting smartphone.

It is clear to me now that we need 24/7h video surveillance of all houses with internet. Inside and out, so we can prove who was close enough. Brb, reporting this to SOPA.

In The Netherlands it’s forced by law to keep certain data for 6 months or something :( You can however vpn to another country, Sealand perhaps :P (TPB was concidering to buy that because it would be their own country and they could make their own copyright laws).

  • http://twitter.com/akuma_river Brandelyn

Interesting. However none of the information they got on me is correct. Due to my internet being wireless sent via a ‘radio dish’ from a tower from a different tower none of the information can id me. Isn’t this just a massive handout to the pay-or-else schemers? Now they don’t even have to skip their own IPs to threaten, there’s a ready-made list posted on a public site for them to work from. And the only way to get your IP removed is to give them your Facebook account, which saves the schemers from having to subpoena ISPs.

The official copyright sharks would never use this data. This is half because they want an respectable source like University research but the other half is because this data is public and can be flawed to Hell and back.

  • Robertification

They only have one file on me, is there a possibility of downloading anonymously without charge??

    • Anonymous

The best idea is to keep updated with the battle over copyright in your country like here in the UK you can currently do as much infringement as you want hassle free.

Should BT downloads carry risk then the best plan is to switch to using the cyberlockers or news services. Only then can your provider see what you do and they ain’t telling.

I see many free offers or beta trails so it is not hard to get started on a free service and to see how well they meet your needs.

Oh, dear. They should really read Wikipedia before talking. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anonymous_P2P#List_of_anonymous_P2P_networks_and_clients <- Are they going to just ignore THESE?

    • Anonymous

I didn’t realize such a list existed. Awesome.

The issue is, all this news we read is pretty negligible as far as the entire file sharing population is concerned. The MPAA/RIAA and Co. are about as dangerous as a fly on the ass of a horse when it comes down to it.

Anonymity is nice and something to strive for in any system, but to do a complete overhaul and change the way millions upon millions download? It isn’t really worth it.

I’d prefer bittorrent be changed slightly for complete anonymity. That’s what uTorrent’s “app” system should have created.

      • Unknown

I don’t think you can “change bittorrent slightly for complete anonymity”… Anonymity requires trusted intermediaries, i.e. a friend to friend network, which bittorrent isn’t.

I would suggest RetroShare or OneSwarm.

Sorry Ernesto but this site is a shame. The site says I have never downloaded anything and it seems a number of others say the same… 99% chance is that the site works only for US IP’s while EU are still anonymous.

    • Anonymous

I’m using a US IP and it has nothing on me. Maybe it only tracks major ISPs?

  • Nospaml

Interesting removal terms. They pretty much force you to admit that you downloaded, whatever they say you downloaded in order to have your data removed. They could sell this information to MPAA and RIAA for gold.

Quote: “By submitting a request to have your download activity removed from our database, you are acknowledging that the activity was, in fact, carried out by yourself. This means that you are only submitting a request to have the details of your own personal activity deleted. Any unrecognized activity, such as files you did not download or do not remember downloading, are not — I repeat, are not to be included in your removal request. Why is this imperative? Well, we actually don’t have to explain ourselves…sorry.”

Also, the company that registered the site is American, not Russian.

What if the MAFIAA tries to hire these people to help them sue people? That could be a problem for BitTorrent downloaders.

    • It’s a fit-up

I think they are the MAFIAA

      • Alyssa Blindy

Hmmm. Well maybe, but then again. They give you the right to delist the IP address from their service, as well as they are encouraging you to make your torrents anonymous. Logically, the MAFIAA wouldn’t do that. The MAFIAA wants you to get caught, not to be anonymous. It wouldn’t make sense for the MAFIAA to be hosting that site in that way.

1 – that great feel when they have no records of you

2 – all those idiots saying ‘o god, i dont want people 2 see wat i’ve downloaded!’. I mean, these could be seen by RIAA/MPAA as quite damning statements of guilt. Just worried..

Using the WOT(Web of Trust) plugin and checking the domain info on that domain, reveals some interesting details. According to WOT its flagged as RED by the community(surprise surprise)and WOT systems and completely untrusted and when you check it’s domain details from their page:

    Registrant: XMLSHOP LLC
    Domain Name: YOUHAVEDOWNLOADED.COM
    Domain servers in listed order:
    NS73.DOMAINCONTROL.COM
    NS74.DOMAINCONTROL.COM

    Reverse Whois:
“XMLSHOP LLC” owns about4 other domains
    Registrar History: 1 registrar
NS History: 2 changes on 3 unique name servers over 0 year.
IP History: 5 changes on 4 unique IP addresses over 0 years.
Whois History: 2 records have been archived since 2011-10-24 .
Reverse IP: 2 other sites hosted on this server.

I personally think this is a honeypot scam meant to trip you up and scare you. The MAFIAA are resorting to further scare tactics, nothing new to them and those that fall for it and see something that they have downloaded will attempt to remove their IP and in the process identify themselves to the MAFIAA, you do the work for them and they have ammo to use in court. The fact that this is a US based domain based off a godaddy lookup, and home of the MAFIAA and its tactics, should send red flags. We all know that IP does NOT equal the infringing pirate. So setup a site to put enough a scare into someone and trick them in to removing their details through a site that can identify you and bang! you just admitted to piracy. Just visiting the site can be questionable since they can now see your IP checking to see if it infringes, that in and of itself is somewhat admitting your guilt thought it’s questionable and since it won’t hold up they need you to further id yourself since anyone can visit the site that’s not really admitting to guilt.

That she did. She is wise enough to know this simply brings her music to more people leading to more fans and the more fans she has the richer she gets.

Her popularity is what killed Amazon when they decided to offer her latest album for download at just $0.99. Their system soon stalled and many connections dropped.

The Government would always prefer the bedroom to ensure nothing unlawful happens when you bed your partner.

Suitable identification must be displayed to the camera prior sexual relations to ensure both partners are of lawful age. Nothing should be inserted into the vagina beyond the penis. Fellatio may not be unlawful but is still frowned upon and can be held against you. You also should not touch your partner’s buttocks in any form or this will be considered both a perversion and act of abuse.

Last of all no cash or physical goods should be handed to your partner on camera or this will be noted as funds in lure of sexual acts and prostitution charges may be filed.

You may also want to tick the box to consent to third party organizations who may want to inform you of related products based upon your tracked consumer tastes.

The privacy policy, the contact us page — it’s all a joke. We came up with the idea of building a crawler like this and keeping the maintenance price under $300 a month. There was only one way to prove our theory worked — to implement it in practice. So we did. Now, we find ourselves with a big crawler. We knew what it did but we didn’t know how to use it. So we decided to make a joke out of it. That’s the beauty of jokes — you can make them out of anything.

However, if you have a better idea — don’t hesitate to contact us.”

It got my details more or less correct and an extra file which my flatmate would have downloaded and probably missing a large portion of what she downloads. Who cares. The information CANNOT be used as evidence as it hasn’t been obtained from a reputable source. Its a campaign to inform that the internet isn’t as private as it seems as the vast majority of people on the web aren’t that tech savvy, particularly network savvy.. So people stop thinking this is a honeypot scam blah blah blah. Legally it can’t be. As far as how they are going about it aswell. This means you are using a private torrent tracker or, of course, you may not be a torrent user at all! It happens. Please, entertain yourself. Feel free to see what other people have downloaded. The search box is on the top. If you have any friends who use torrents, use it to scare them off. We also have a widget that you can install in your website, blog or Facebook page. Or you can just send them a link to this site. They will see a table similar to what you see below. The only difference — they will see their downloads.

Seems to not work for a lot of people, showing no files when it should show files or showing files people have never heard of.
But judging by some of the angry facebook comments it is clearly working for some people.

I think the site really will help people to realise just how un-anonymous their actions are and hopefuly make them take more care in the future.

Interesting. The vast majority of my torrenting is done through Demonoid, but NONE of my traffic there shows up in this new site’s records, so I’m guessing they don’t have the capability to log a semi-private tracker like Demonoid. The only thing they show for me is four torrents that I had to search out in “the wild,” but even then they don’t have all of those I’ve done recently. For safety’s sake, though, it appears I should try to limit my torrenting to less public trackers like Demonoid.

    Removal Terms
    The Details:
By submitting a request to have your download activity removed from our database, you are acknowledging that the activity was, in fact, carried out by yourself. This means that you are only submitting a request to have the details of your own personal activity deleted. Any unrecognized activity, such as files you did not download or do not remember downloading, are not — I repeat, are not to be included in your removal request. Why is this imperative? Well, we actually don’t have to explain ourselves…sorry.

The important part is that you understand these terms and conditions before hitting that beautiful button that will erase your criminal back ground, at least for now. Wait, you did remember to read these terms before making the decision to submit a removal request, right? Of course you did, everyone reads the fine print.

    Other Important Things to Consider:
We make no guarantees that your information will not appear on any other databases. We may have erased your bad behavior but, keep in mind that your data on this site is aggregated public domain. So, if by chance, another sadistic group of people decides to open a similar web site, we have no control over what they do with your information. Furthermore, if you continue to involve yourself in activity like this, your future download history will, without a doubt, appear in our database again and we may not be as nice about it next time.

If any part of these terms is still unclear, please visit your local elementary school and ask to repeat grades 3 through 5.

Ive looked into this so called tracking website and its so called recorded info is not just horribly inaccurate, it appears to be almost ridiculously wrong in many cases. Its been suggested its a Russian website fishing for Facebook info, and given my personal knowledge along with others I have had check it, something is ridiculously wrong. I’m not saying that this kind of info cannot be obtained, just that this particular website doesn’t seem to be able to do it, despite whatever they might claim. If anyone out there in fact feels that the info they are displaying is correct about what they have downloaded off of bit torrent is correct, that would be doubly interesting as it would create a real quandary where they seem to get some right and some wrong, generally rendering all their results meaningless in any event.

They got nothing on me… But then again, I’m from Egypt, we have no antipiracy laws, a whole new revolution would start if they ever make antipiracy laws in Egypt, because 95% of Egyptians survive on pirating everything, starting from windows and ending with everything the internet has to offer..

  • the joke is on you

    Don’t take it seriously

The privacy policy, the contact us page — it’s all a joke. We came up with the idea of building a crawler like this and keeping the maintenance price under $300 a month. There was only one way to prove our theory worked — to implement it in practice. So we did. Now, we find ourselves with a big crawler. We knew what it did but we didn’t know how to use it. So we decided to make a joke out of it. That’s the beauty of jokes — you can make them out of anything.

However, if you have a better idea — don’t hesitate to contact us.

These guys are just whoring attention and advertising themselves to the companies that want this kind of work done.. Maybe they are searching for a nice big check to make this site real, instead of a joke..

A week on, it’s become obvious that only some trackers are being logged by these Russians. And if you know which trackers they are logging (or, conversely, which trackers they aren’t logging), you can avoid being in their database. While I haven’t made the effort to systematically check a multitude of trackers, I can state that the only torrents they have listed for me are those that I ran with upwards of a dozen trackers attached. Since then, I have pruned the list of trackers used by each torrent I run and have avoided having any more torrents added to their database. Rather than (possibly erroneously) list trackers they seem to be logging, I’ll cite those that I can safely state they are NOT logging at this time: Demonoid, OpenBittorrent and Istole.it. I’m sure there are others; I just haven’t taken the time to identify them. But in the meantime, if you can confine your torrents to those three trackers, you’ll avoid being logged.

Ah like I said somewhere else, this is nothing but a bunch of bullshit, they got my location correct but according to what they said I downloaded I know I’m safe cause of the files they say I downloaded is false so this tells me that the system they are using is false.

The first thing that comes into my mind when talking about getting anonymous while torrenting is of course VPN..I am using http://www.purevpn.com for sometime now and it helps me remain secure as well as anonymous..I guess you guys should also switch to VPN now as the stated website in the article can really reveal alot about you :)

I don’t, My current IP, and previous IP are clean, and I’ve been torrenting the days away.

forgot to mention, My only protection is a few firewalls, a dynamic IP, and an IP6 through IP4 tunnel.
