Kim Dotcom Prepares Mega Cash Prize Encryption Challenge

When Mega launched this week as “The Privacy Company” their claims of super-security were bound to come under the highest levels of scrutiny. Predictably, security experts all over the world have been examining the site looking for flaws and any sign that user privacy could be breached. After responding to some of the critics, Kim Dotcom has announced that he will issue some kind of encryption challenge. “Let’s see what you got,” he says.

The launch of Mega last weekend went off as planned and the results so far have been nothing short of spectacular.

In a matter of days the site’s membership has gone from zero to more than a million, although how much more remains a mystery. Kim Dotcom says that no one would believe him if he revealed those stats, so he’ll keep those to himself for now.

What is fairly obvious at this point is the magnitude of the site’s traffic, which at least initially caused some huge problems. During the first few days Mega simply couldn’t cope with demand and was rendered inaccessible for many hours all over the world. In addition, some signed-up members complained of slow upload speeds.

But despite the teething problems, Mega’s traffic stats speak for themselves. Just take a look at this chart comparing similar services, each operating their own business model in the file-storage / sharing niche.

MegaTraffic

So while Mega settles down, moves out of its honeymoon period, and tries to sustain the kind of successes it’s enjoyed so far, there are ongoing questions and debates concerning the site’s key selling point – security.

While no one appears to have been able to actually break Mega or compromise the security of any of its users, a small army of security researchers have been publishing their musings, each with their own predictions of potential weaknesses in Mega and how these might affect security in the future.

When asked for comment, French security researcher Olivier Laurelli, who is better known by his alias Bluetouff, told TorrentFreak that although Mega’s team have been quite fast to react, the discovery of many little issues could lead to a big one.

“Confirmation links have already been cracked, the XSS issue could lead to private RSA theft, we also noticed SSL issues. The fact that cryptography can be disabled from the Mega side for a user without notifying him is another serious issue,” Laurelli said.

The main focus for researchers has been the security of the site’s in-browser encryption and the generation and handling of keys to decrypt that content. Some of their concerns were rounded up in an Ars article titled ‘Megabad: A quick look at the state of Mega’s encryption’.

The piece raised questions on number of security issues and today Mega responded to some of them. Although not directly admitting that any serious flaws exist, Mega acknowledges that it is in beta and that in some cases improvements can be made.

MEGA encryption (large)

For example, at the moment it’s impossible for users to change their Mega password so if they forget it they lose all their files and if someone finds out what it is, every file becomes insecure. Mega says that sometime in the future a password change feature will be added. Mega also acknowledges that if a user picks a weak password, tools like the just-released MegaCracker might be able to achieve results. Better pick a good password then – and remember it – just as users should do on any site.

Many of the other issues involving cryptography, possibly insecure Javscript code, data deduplication and mouse and keyboard entropy, were addressed by Mega – some with clarification and others with dismissal. Questions over the security of the Mega website itself will have to wait for another day.

In the meantime the debate will rage on, with security researchers on one side, Mega on the other, and wide selection of onlookers in the middle watching their exchanges like some kind of technological tennis match, with RSA keys for balls and something even more complicated for rackets.

The question is, who will win?

Currently Mega appears to be at least 30-0 up, but hackers and security researchers think they’ve identified enough flaws in the site’s game to claw a few points back, maybe not to take the match, but enough to challenge Mega’s privacy claims.

But according to Olivier Laurelli, the researcher who found security holes in the French Hadopi anti-piracy company TMG, the security implementation on Mega wasn’t put there exclusively to protect users, but to ensure legality for its operators.

“Security has been sold to the public for a good reason, it’s just a way for Kim Dotcom to say ‘my service is legal and I have no way to know if my users are doing illegal things on my website’. The poor implementation means that it’s not a user centric security, it’s just a legal one,” he adds.

All that said, for the average user there currently appears to be few serious concerns, especially when comparing Mega to the vast majority of other file-hosting sites that already encrypt nothing as standard.

Unsurprisingly, Kim Dotcom, as ever, appears completely unfazed by the scrutiny.

Developing a theme first mentioned by Mega CTO Mathias Ortmann at the launch conference, Dotcom is throwing down the gauntlet to would-be hackers who think they can crack Mega’s security – or maybe even provide a better system of their own.

“We welcome the ongoing #Mega security debate & will offer a cash prize encryption challenge soon. Let’s see what you got,” he announced a couple of hours ago.

There will no shortage of takers but the question remains – will Mega ever have to pay out? Maybe, maybe not – but whatever happens Laurelli believes the process will be beneficial.

“The challenge for securing Mega is quite interesting and will probably reveal the weakness of the RSA key generation process. We actually do not have enough parameters for a good entropy,” he concludes.

F*ck! That chart speaks volumes of how good his publicity was… to rack up that kind of a spike compared to established players is just… bonkers! That too without spending on advertising!

Considering what mega was supposed to be its not surprising at all.

And its not going to be surprising to see it drop like a rock after everyone realizes that its nothing like the old megaupload.

…. What do you think will happen…….. if ….. Two or Three Hundred ……. MILLION OTHER people ………. decide that it is …..
        …WAY….. WAY…… WAY……. more… than the old MegaUpload….??

        Oy, Mamochka!!

        • Shogunreaper

          what?

        • cupid_stunt

          steroids

      • Whatever

        It can be… Megaupload.

Had some thoughts about it. However only tried the interface shortly without account creation and didn’t get to far. Uploading test file of a few bytes disappeared. Could create folders. I can understand why it might not work that way. Also used more exotic browsers.

So the following is a theory:

        1. A link site with links to encrypted files (no decryption keys)
        2. A site with a list of decryption keys in a file not linked to any links.
        3. An application based on the Mega API to try all the keys from the list.

The reasoning is that there is a limit of shared files and thus keys which is a few magnitudes lower than all the possible keys. Most computers will be able to go through those keys within reasonable time to decrypt the file.

Further advantages are that the uploader has not published a link & key together and there is no way of knowing if the downloader could have decrypted the encrypted file. Plausible deniability as any of the links might be manually entered as a lucky guess or clicked by mistake (theoretically unusable as they are encrypted). Just an IP addresses to download becomes even weaker evidence.

It costs more time (decrypting) but is also much more difficult for the MAFIAA.

BTW: Still waiting for Kings list of link sites but don’t want his content.

He didn’t meet real needs that weren’t already being met by other file lockers and your own encryption software.

        • icec0ld

If the need was not real there would be no demand. One can argue about image all they want but reality speaks volumes louder than I can say it and far far louder than you can denounce it.

        • Guest

If what Dotcom is offering is no different from what already exists in the market then Mega poses no threat to the entertainment industries.

So what’s your point? You’re going after him because you think he’s an asshole, and not because he’s a threat? I think there should be policemen going after you, but I suppose you’ve always got Robert King to hide your jizz-covered face behind.

        • Scary_Devil_Monastery

“He didn’t meet real needs that weren’t already being met by other file lockers and your own encryption software.”

The key difference being that most people do not want the hassle of a two-step process. Kim is able to cash in on this blunderingly obvious fact.

“The difference is that Fat Kim does it was dancing girls and a “fuck the authorities” attitude that the children and sheeple really go for.”

So Kim can sell a worthless service redundant to anything already out there while spending next to nothing on advertising but big media companies are screwed trying to sell a product people actually want?

Meanwhile those sheeple – who could all have been suckling happily at the teats of the MPAA and RIAA – are being loudly lambasted by you, making a shining example of with what contempt the industry views it’s customer base.

I think given that alternative, we stick with Dotcom who at least entertains. Which apparently the “entertainment industry” has forgotten how to do.

          [EDIT]

          @Guest

“I think there should be policemen going after you, but I suppose you’ve always got Robert King to hide your jizz-covered face behind.”

“That too without spending on advertising!”

What are you talking about? Millions were spent on advertising Mega. By NZ, the MPAA, the RIAA and the DoJ.

Of course that brings results. Mega was hyped more than most movie trailers by the actions of the aforementioned entities.

  • knglerxst

No type of security is 100% foolproof. That’s not really the goal. It’s about making something so inconvenient to crack or get into that most people decide it’s not worth the trouble. They’ll give up or go after an easier target. At least Mega encrypts files. Most other cyberlockers don’t even do that.

I am happy for Kim . He needs to do what’s best for his family and secondly his team . Kim has went through a lot and his life was turned up side down and what happened should have been a civil case and tossed out . He is not a felon and should not be made into one . We have real ones in prison and some that shouldn’t be in prison for the falsely accused. I never have used these type of services but when I heard about it and that money was the whole thing pushing these companies to kill off websites not caring about how it would effect family you wonder what type of people these are . The taking of the child’s laptop because she downloaded a song and raided her house to find her like if she was some convict I just don’t get it . People are only human and we have been sharing everything our whole lives in some way or other . I have a family and if I went through that type of bull he went through id do the same to protect my family and get things right the second time even if he was even wrong the first time. We truly cannot ask our small isps big isps to police what their subscribers do unless they are acting out as a terrorist to hurt government or people from all fronts and walks of life. Kim from looking at your pictures I can see you have a great family and alot of friends that really do care about you . I almost wasn’t here because I was blind to that and those type of people saved my life after recovering from what I did and they are still here standing strong with me . You need to Win and Prevail over all this. Your Family and true Friends is all you have and will ever need . I apologize to anyone reading this but I am on medication as i sort of hinted, mentioned my problems . Hope this make sense. Also one last thing we shouldn’t ever scare people so bad that it causes them to feel exiled and a outcast and a total loss or unforgivable where people take their lives over some dumb things that happen over the internet . Those people know who they are and have blood on their hands and will answer someday for it. Taking money to crash people lives is profound.

Kim is certainly no saint or hero. At best he is a business man, at worst he is a crook (has been proven in court – to clarify – I don’t mean Mega).
My take on the man is he is a superior publicist, and if he worked for the MPAA/RIAA or Hollywood then I, as a pirate, would be scared.

      • markh

has been proven in court. Is he convicted, No, so that he is a crook is just hearsay

        • Liam Jh

Unfortunately that’s not how the law work. You may have served your sentence, but the infraction stays on your criminal record for a number of years (and life for some sex offenses), meaning if you apply for a job you have to declare – if asked – your past offenses.

Whoa, new favourite upload host for large files found (rghost.net for small files, it’s basically the old mediafire).

I tried uploading: went from 20KB/s to 0.3KB/s, never finished; downloading: saturated my connection (without an account!), I couldn’t save the file though (firefox).

In any case I’m really looking forward how this pans out.

        Read what the article says.

“Dotcom’s new assault will be based on revelations that megaupload actively co-operated with US authorities on several piracy cases, one of which concerned an outfit named NinjaVideo that used megaupload to store some its files. Megaupload was asked by the US Department of Justice (DoJ) to preserve those files, to assist the ongoing investigation.

Do a spot of research before acting like a spoilt retard who can’t read.

        • Who

“Do a spot of research before acting like a spoilt retard who can’t read”

were in the quote does it say this? “offered to sell out other file sharers before”
is says this “Megaupload was asked by the US Department of Justice (DoJ) to preserve those files, to assist the ongoing investigation” in other words they were setting HIM up. the US DOJ/FBI/RIAA/MPAA dam well know that they CAN’T touch the people that uploaded them files. hence Y they went after HIM instead. you are reading it wrong.

“Megaupload was asked by the US Department of Justice (DoJ) to preserve those files, to assist the ongoing investigation”……this meant that they didn’t want him to delete the evidence so the evidence could be used in the ongoing “UNLAWFUL” investigation. this does not mean that HE was asked to assist in the investigation. or it wound have said “and to” instead of “to”.

so Y don’t YOU do a spot of research.

        • Who

actually it would have said “he was also asked to assist the ongoing investigation” because IF you are going by proper English the word “AND” can’t be @ the start of anther sentience. BUT who fucking cares?

      • Guest

        What are you on?

You quote the article “Megaupload was asked by the US Department of Justice (DoJ) to preserve those files, to assist the ongoing investigation”

Megaupload (Kim Dotcom’s company) complied. His company, which he owned and ran, assisted the investigation which ultimately resulted in the Ninjavideo convictions. If that’s not “selling out” I don’t know what is.

I see Anon are starting to make noises about this also.

        • Who

          what are YOU on?

IF he did NOT comply, HE would have been arrested ON THE SPOT for not cooperating and interfering with an investigation. or did you not know this?

selling out would have been going against what he told his subscribers in the tos
buy saying I will not give out ANY personal information and then doing the opposite.

        • Guest

          He complied.

He sold out other file sharers (Ninjavideo) several of whom are currently doing jail time.

He’s done it once and he’ll do it again.

His current ToS states that he’ll hand all of his users personal data without a court order.

    • Nono

What amazes me the most is calling mega “the privacy company” when they actually keep that kind of records on their users.
A real “privacy company” would allow upload through tor or something similar and without requiring any kind of potentially dangerous client-side scripting.
The worst thing about it is that most people are clueless enough that they’ll believe in that lying slogan.

      • xpmule

Want to hear a really head scratching question?

How Big is Mega’s ultimate Membership?

    Say in one year!

    Say in three years!

    Say in five!

I raise this question because it is a powerful Crystal Ball that tells the future of the Corporate Copyright Cartel’s ability to hang on to their priviliged control over Intellectual Property.

Today, Corporate Copyright Holders are doing some really powerful head scratching over this very question.

    Why?

Because if that ultimate user base is somewhere between 500 Million to One Billion users; or, if that user base ends up being beween one and two billion users, which Copyright Holders are unable to legally extinguish; then, what we’re talking about is a huge global Business worth listing on the New York Stock Exchange; but, which will in fact be listed as a New Zealand Company. Worse, that Company will have powerful imitators who will also want to be listed abroad.

That process is NOT merely about embarassment!! It is about the flight of wealth to foreign Jurrisdictions!! It is about the Loss of Systemic control!! It is about survival!

As I always say, the immediately intelligible sound is

Tic tock, tic tock, tic tock, tic tock, tic tock,……..tic tock…… toc tock ……

    • Scary_Devil_Monastery

“…then, what we’re talking about is a huge global Business worth listing on the New York Stock Exchange; but, which will in fact be listed as a New Zealand Company. Worse, that Company will have powerful imitators who will also want to be listed abroad.”

Nailed it, I think. The idea that Mega might succeed is enough to rouse most of the MPAA/RIAA screaming from their beds in the middle of the night.

And the idea of other businesses currently used to the circus routine of jumping through circus hoops all day long in order to fulfill a bushel basket worth of DMCA looking up and noticing Kim loafing around with not a care in the world should be enough to make most of the Treasury wake in a similar manner.

  • foff

Dot com is sure getting a lot of attention. I guess it may take time but I have yet to see a mega link for anything. The test of whether this site makes it is the free policies. While I could not imagine trying to dl most stuff without a premium account there are plenty of people that do. So how fast they can get it and how big of files they can dl determine whether they like it or not. I could careless from my perspective about the encryption as this is all about making it harder for take down trolls and makes it harder for mega to be accused of any crime for what might be on their servers.

I believe the logging of ip’s is to deter child porn. This will assist any law enforcement agency looking for these files and looking for anyone who uploaded them. To date at least the RIAA has shown no inclination to target individual uploaders and probably won’t happen because they don’t have jurisdiction over most uploaders and there is certainly no ROI from little lawsuits against uploaders.

    • Liam Jh

The child porn argument is for exclusive use of the MPAA/RIAA supporters.

      • Kaza

foff is one of those impressionable persons.
The governments don’t care about that
and some organizations are taking economical advantage of those subjects.
they’re just using that argument to create more filters to control your activity,
even if you only use the internet to watch “what’s the weather today”,
they want to know what you’re doing. And this is not paranoia,
you just need to analyze the actual situation and research for information.
Copyright is just another excuse to create more mass surveillance tools.

    • Nono

The ip logging is there to protect his own fat ass.
He doesn’t care about his users’ security or privacy, it’s just marketing.
All he cares about is going back to making big bucks.
The guy’s not a hero of the people or a martyr, he’s just a businessman.

      • KimDotCoNz

Very true, but he’s fooling a lot of people.

He’s not paying users anymore though, because he legally can’t. Also on top of that he wasn’t paying users for quite a while, hence he felt pissed everyone else was taking some of his pie and his revenue and felt like suing competitors. Like a true businessman he is.

      • bobmail

@nono: You got it. Everything in this setup isn’t to protect the users, it’s to make sure the users can be turned into scapegoats. He is working hard to shuck all responsiblity, and in doing so, is actively collecting as much user information as he can to hand to any authorities that show up at the door.

Myself I think his legal arguments even for this site will fail. Willful blindness, and setting up the system in a manner where you specifically don’t know what is in the file isn’t going to protect him. It’s no different from someone who claims to be innocent of drug trafficking because they never looked at the package they carried. If you intentionally pickup from a drug deal, and drop off to a drug dealer, you cannot be so ignorant as to think you aren’t working for drug dealers. Storing a bunch of DVD and blu-ray sized files, no matter the encryption, is still very likely to contain copyright violating material. Making it easy for those files to be moved place to place, even if you aren’t specifically aware – while profiting from that content, isn’t a strong place to stand legally.

Kim is just too smug and arrogant. He will fall again (he always does).

        • http://gene-poole.tumblr.com Gene Poole

What in the blue fuck are you even talking about?? It’s a file locker, not a meth lab. I have my kids’ baby pictures and videos stored on there so that the next time my hard drive crashes I don’t have to pay 800 bucks to have the memories of my kids pulled from the drive, if it even works. As far as I can tell, that’s not illegal activity, and that’s the sort of thing “file storage” is intended for: storing files.

By your argument we should arrest those guys renting mailboxes because some can use them for illegal activity and the proprieters aren’t opening up the mailboxes after hours to see what’s being delivered.

        • http://gene-poole.tumblr.com Gene Poole

Making it easy for those files to be moved place to place, even if you aren’t specifically aware

Good to know that you think encryption should be outlawed because someone could use it to hide something. Is it just wrong when the public does it? Or is it wrong when the government does as well? Either way it’s good to know you stand with China in the belief that the government should be able to snoop through your business…Although look how well that’s worked out for them. Tor anyone?

Which is another point. if encryption is so terrible, maybe the US State Department should stop funding on Tor, since it utilizes encryption in helping those sneaky Chinese and Iranian subversives secretly transmit information without anyone seeing what it is.

Now with all of that said, if you have an idea as to how to stop people from using certain types of maths, I’m all ears, because that hasn’t worked out so well in the past. math is not illegal.

        • xpmule

          Gene you said..

“By your argument we should arrest those guys renting mailboxes because some can use them for illegal activity”

good point and i like how it shattered bob’s logical premise into pieces lol

Bobmail is just too smug and arrogant. He will fall again (he always does).

        • Scary_Devil_Monastery

“Myself I think his legal arguments even for this site will fail. Willful blindness, and setting up the system in a manner where you specifically don’t know what is in the file isn’t going to protect him.”

          Bank Lockboxes.
          Federal Express.
          Any messenger service.
          The Post Office.

All of the above are using an identical model to Kim’s. By your definition these are all then illegal or reasonable targets of search-and-seizures?

Bobmail, are you taking hallucinogens? Because in no sane man’s world does your argument hold any grasp on either law or common sense.

“If you intentionally pickup from a drug deal, and drop off to a drug dealer, you cannot be so ignorant as to think you aren’t working for drug dealers.”

More of the same nonsense. What does the average person in need of a lockbox, a backup, the post office or federal express have to do with drug dealers? All of whom will certainly accept to hold or transmit a package which they do not know the content of, no questions asked.

“Kim is just too smug and arrogant. He will fall again (he always does).”

Just like the Post Office has repeatedly been declared illegal and subjected to numerous shutdowns. In no world ever.

Seriously, bobmail…you just went and one-upped “Baghdad Bob” as a contender for self-destruction.

  • KimDotCoNz

This spike is caused by all the media in the world writing about him and putting him down as Breaking News. The true value and the real visitors of the site will be seen in 30-60 days. Not just after a week. Kim is still doing publicity to try get the spike as high as possible and plateau it.

  • xpmule

Haven’t bothered and i won’t unless i start seeing some of my favorite places put up links for mega downloads for TV shows etc.

So unless KDC accommodates the “premium account pushers” I’m not sure they will adopt / switch to his service when using others already..

If he does the whole common routine of capping download speed to free users to like 15-30 KBps he is screwed !
If he goes to 50-75 KBps he is just like the other guys.. average.

    He’s got competition !
check out the free download speed on this place ! (1/2/3+ MBps)
    http://uload.to
Then go to netload an download a video at 15 KBps LOLOL

oh and max size for free users is a big issue too..

THOSE are my concerns because encryption takes a back seat if people aren’t gonna use the service in the first place ;)

Unless you have hundreds or thousands of really tight friends that you trust, that are avid file-sharers. encoders, software crackers and hackers etc.. I’m not sure how MEGA is going to work for you. If I want to share the movie or song I just bought with little Johnny in another town, state or country, I guess that’s great, but MEGA seems worthless to true global file-sharers. For me personally its worthless. Out of all my close friends, none of them know anything about encoding movies, music etc, all they can do is click the download button. And how long would it take to get a group of people that are experienced uploaders with enough content to make it worth your while (Online) that you could trust?

  • cupid_stunt

am just posting again, boredom, still, mustn’t complain Ted uncut was sure funny, tick tock, still waiting for my mega account, tick tock, fuck it, i give up am off down the pub, mega my arse, more like meagre

F**ck companies like MU that only care about making profits at the expense of others. They are criminals just like the people who persecute them.

    http://img.gawkerassets.com/img/17tqx2f8qxbdngif/medium.gif

Kim doesn’t care about anybody but himself, only wants money even if that means delivering our data to the highest bidder!

It’s in their terms of service! You don’t need further proof some kind of aliance was created between these people and the MAFIAA.

I don’t see people talking about this.

It’s not a conspiracy theory, Dotcom is a criminal that deserves to be in jail, he got rich by doing his stunts and tricking fools who believe his intentions are good.

Our praises should go to the Pirate Bay and all the people who made that possible, the site is still alive and it was always alive without relying on money from its users. This is what we should invest, in sharing things for free, not for somebody’s profit, torrents are never going to end.

    • Who

“**ck companies like MU that only care about making profits at the expense of others”

that’s Y you don’t pay for the service. when I used MU I never paid him. I just used the free service and it was just fine.

      • WiseMan

I knew how to do a simple url edit that gave free premium speeds. I just used that.

        • Who

ya I did that some times but I have almost always used torrents.
I don’t care to much for cyber lockers.

        • xpmule

few releases make it on to torrents and and most butchered are butchered by noobs seeking attention.
a good example is i got Metalocalypse season 4 bluray rip from a file locker service but it is STILL not on any torrent site or index engine yet.
this is by no means a rare occurrence especially with tv show dvd / bluray rips !
Shareware on public trackers is like asking for a virus.. never mind you never have a clue what your going to get.. i grabbed a small program last night and it said it was ver 1234 and it was actually 1200 and further more the keygen did not work and there was no credits attached to the release so i had to do a lot of google searching to see where the hell it came from.
Pisses me off when i’m looking for dvd/bluray rips for tv shows and people are only sharing TV rips most of the time when the dvd rips are ignored and eventually die and fade away. and when they are posted they often have the files rename and usually no mention of the group or even what it is is mentioned.
A large portion of P2P is a Tsunami of bullshit from penny pinchers and attention whoring kiddies !

        • xpmule

          Who

why would anyone ever download garbage from a torrent when you can get a PROPER release from places like -> zeroday.in
if its a big download i can understand or if you can’t find it else where otherwise why do i need some idiot to unpack a release for me delete teh nfo and diz file and remove any trace of the group ? (and god knows what else)

there is a reason releases are packed and come with an nfo.

i got a kick out of the repack noob installers that were pretty popular on TPB last year lol

I just noticed… .co.nz is an unfortunate domain, makes Kim sound like a mega con artist.

  • Anon

Security is nice and all~ but i can’t even download any file that i have uploaded yet…nor it give me any email whatsoever upon registering to the site…the site also takes a good 10 second to load compared to other file locker, so far i’m not impressed. Hopefully the site will be better the next month.

    • WiseMan

you know torrent freak has to make money. they got to have articles that will get many views so they will make more money. thats the dark side of news on the internet. it must get views.

      • Maj

You know, you’re not a wise man.

  • foff

Still waiting to see a mega link so far no joy

  • bobmail

    Story should read:

“Fat Kim makes another stab at getting stupid sites to promote his business”.

    • Scary_Devil_Monastery

Yes, I agree. the MPAA and RIAA have done Kim no end of favors in promoting his business.

They haven’t written him a bill yet so I’m guessing they gave him all that fame pro bono.

What? Why would you not put a password change feature in? Surely most of the code is already there and in a re-usable form. I’m shocked, frankly, even in my most basic of secured apps I provide a password change. I mean, c’mon now. :o
