The place where breaking news, BitTorrent and copyright collide

Mininova Upgrades Layout, Servers and Office

Mininova, one of the largest BitTorrent sites on the Internet has relocated to a new office in Utrecht, The Netherlands. Besides the new office Mininova has also made some changes to the site itself, while adding two more servers to cope with the growing demand from its visitors.

One of the most significant changes for the Mininova staff is the new office, located in the city center of Utrecht. The new office has more space than the temporary one they moved into last year. Aside from the five current employees there is room for another two additional staff in the future.

There are more changes at Mininova though. Niek, co-founder of the site told TorrentFreak that they will add two more servers later this week to keep up with the growing number of visitors. Last month they broke another traffic record raking in 734,300,000 page views and more hardware is needed to keep the site running smoothly.

In a blog post the Mininova crew details further improvements to the site, such as a Google’s new button standard, less ads, highlighted search results and the ability to search within a category.

In addition to these new features, Mininova teamed up with VIPeers for a new upload feature. Users with a VIPeers account can upload files straight from their computer, and the VIPeers service will create and seed the torrent before adding it to Mininova.

“The bridge we created enables Mininova users to get a specific VIPeers upload page. After uploading, torrents can be sent to Mininova with one click,” Louis Choquel of VIPeers told TorrentFreak.

With all the drama that’s going on in Sweden at the moment, it’s good to see that it’s still business as usual at Mininova. At least for now.

    I love the category searching! It makes it as easy as TPB to get the torrent you want.
    (Sorry if I double commented, I got an error saying I commented too “fast” when I did my first comment and don’t know if it still went through)

    @7, alish:

    WTF?

  • DG

    wow….
    TPB has to prove the fact that they’re not making a profit, and constantly have to prove that no materials are ever hosted on their servers.
    Now mininova is not only making a profit, but they’ve got an office and employes. Now they’re even seeding stuff themselves!!

    It’s a wierd world.

    I had the same thought. Not saying it is a bad thing, just odd.

    @13

    Just look at Youtube.com. Their place of business is mainly the USA, where copyright infringement is more easily dealt with in court. They actually host the infringing material as well, yet nobody goes after them.

    That’s outside the city center, it’s not an “A location”. (Oudegracht or Maliebaan would be A locations)

    Not that they couldn’t afford it, they must be making millions from ad revenues

    w00t. now it’s time to upgrade your shit style. site still looks like windows 95.

  • RoestVrijStaal

    @22: They can’t skin the site in Vista look. It will result in too much unneeded bandwidth and costs, because the torrents matter, not the skin.

    A nice pic of the pretty office. :)

  • Niek

    @11: FYI, TPB has an office too :)

    Just to make this clear: the 5 ‘employees’ are the founders of the site (we’ve been working on it since Jan 2005). And regarding seeding: that’s done by VIPeers, Mininova just links to VIPeers on the upload page.

  • eni_

    Thanks for the info Niek, although I kind of assumed it’d be something like that, despite the good ad revenue, its still pretty difficult to have a lot of staff…
    And congrats to mininova, really nice to see another nice and strong .torrent site like The Pirate Bay.
    @22:
    I like the look of Windows 95, it looks clean and usable, unlike what Vista looks like, a big splodgy mess of unnecessary prettiness.

    Bless the Dutch..
    It wouldn’t surprise me if TiAMO,

    It just means that mininova has got their shit together, unlike most torrent sites.

  • Trancfreak

    I think i will come by one day, its not so far away from were i live :)

  • buuuck

    Just had my first and last visit to Mininova, page changed to some smiley central or some crap…

  • Jim Guardian

    @11 Mininova is not even hosting the torrents, they link to outside torrents. And they’re not seeding either, VIPeers is.

    @14 YouTube spends at least 300k a year on legal fees, Google just has a lot of money to pay for lawyers, they make a lot more than that. Just look at their approx. traffic on compete.com and imagine the lowest video CPM rate applied to a portion of that traffic

  • Pat

    Even white birds support mininova.
    I think i’m in love ^^

  • meh

    Mininova would be #1 if they ran tracker.. cause once the shit hits the fan there going to be gone with a flicker.

  • Brian D

    @29
    ‘ It just means that mininova has got their shit together, unlike most torrent sites.

    …. Coz they are more of a metasearch tracking torrents tracked by TPB, Demonoid or Sumotorrent.And hence a bit more ” secured ” legally !

    Nice and Clean interface though.
    Yes I am also a mininova fan :)
