The place where breaking news, BitTorrent and copyright collide

ODDNS: Decentralized and Open DNS To Defeat Censorship

For the last couple of years discussion around censorship of websites in the West has become as prolific as the that around already established blockades in countries such as China and Iran. While meddling with the Internet’s DNS is the weapon of choice for censors, a new P2P system called ODDNS hopes to put control back in the hands of the people.

The Internet’s Domain Name System, which translates human-readable URLs into IP addresses so that web users can more easily find Internet sites, has become a battle ground for censorship during the last couple of years.

From residing almost exclusively in the awareness of computer engineers and nerds, recent attempts by various copyright holders to censor sites such as The Pirate Bay and introduce even more broad powers with the introduction of the SOPA legislation in the US, the existence and mechanisms of the Internet’s DNS have now broken through into the mainstream.

In a response to growing attempts at censorship, various alternative DNS systems have been proposed with an emphasis on those that can’t be meddled with by the authorities. The latest, called ODDNS, comes out of France.

As its name suggests, ODDNS (Open and Decentralized DNS) is an open and decentralized DNS system running on the P2P (Peer-to-Peer) model. It’s creator, web developer Jimmy Rudolf, told PCinpact he invented the system with two specific aims in mind.

The first, and of most interest to people fighting censorship, is to “show governments that it is not possible to prevent people from talking.”

The second, of interest to anyone who owns and maintain their own domain names, is to take back control of them. “I find it absurd to have to regularly pay for a domain name,” Rudolf explained.

ODDNS is an application which allows everyone running the software to share information about domain names with each other, a bit like how a P2P network functions. ODDNS can supplement or even replace regular DNS.

ODDNS

Because domain names and related IP addresses are shared among peers in the network, they can no longer be censored. Furthermore, buying a domain name from a registrar is no longer required since people running ODDNS can create and maintain their own.

Still under development, as expected the source code to ODDNS is licensed under GNU GPLv3. PCinpact reports that the current ODDNS website will be updated next week and the first beta release of the software will follow shortly after.

Of course the success of the project will sit on the developers’ ability to overcome the technical hurdles and, crucially, if they can encourage enough people to come on board and stay on board. The desire to stick with this kind of system will be driven by need so more censorship will become this and similar projects’ lifeblood.

If a website is offline, you can’t download it.

That’s kind of the way it works.

        • Danny

You can from an online cache somewhere like google or the waybackwhen machine.

        • Named

Danny, what’s the point in cache when most of the internet is dynamic? Sure, you can download cached torrents … but that’s not the point if you want to find new torrents – since it needs to use a dynamic database to find those new results.

    • Guest

Here is an idea, DNS lookup the address first and grab the IP if you are paranoid. I don’t think they will censor that website though.

    • http://www.facebook.com/ValhallaLegend Andrew Lee

You have to realize the only true way to censor and protect files from being shared would be to eliminate technology.
Before there was the internet their was bootlegged VCR tapes.
They took a shot at them to in the late 70′s or early 80′s with the same claims they’re using again towards the internet.

If they had their way back then countless technologies worthless ones all the way to life saving ones would not exist today. One a absurd law is passed it’s infinitely more easy to build from it. They would have used it to stop all forms of digital storage. Meaning no computers, video game consoles, and too many others to list.

Thankfully the courts had the sense to shoot them down back then. I hope to see the same results when it comes to the internet.

Trust me I realize for good entertainment to be produced there has to be profit for the creators or it would be pointless to do.

I know a lot of people see me joke around or troll the other side but I do enjoy that when I’m fucked up lol.

However when it comes down to the absolute truth every thing they’re pushing for is bad for freedom in general. Not of the USA but the whole planet and I’ve said it before even though it might piss some people off.

Saying one form a sharing is illegal ex loaning some tools or whatever out to the person next door is exactly the same.
A huge majority of the people that download watch a movie one time then delete it or they might even stream it only.

When I see laws I always look at the absolute worst case scenario even if it sounds fucking ridiculous. The fact is with crazy laws the worst case will probably not happen, but the problem is that it could happen.

Any law that leaves room for a insanely fucked up worst case should never even be brought to light. The backers of them in the government should be fired & jailed immediately because supporting such filth is treason in my eyes.

The Betamax case was a testing ground. I have to give Justice Stevens infinite credit by asking the court one simple thing: Does this technology have uninfringing uses? And can we expand on those?

He was our Computer Analyst on the Supreme Court and he always seemed to understand the technology far better than anyone else. It’s sad to see him go but having Justice Breyer as the one person who understands technology issues is a great thing.

I just wish more justices understood that less copyright means more growth for the nation.

True that. No problem with copyrighting COMPLETE software things, but these piecemeal software patents need to disappear totally.

Who cares about all this, why are we not talking about the fact that I could “become” microsoft.com and infect everyone with a virus that visits it. I used to own 50+ domain names and have begun letting them expire, converting them to subdomains of another site because of the cost of maintaining them, but someone needs to regulate ownership. I like the idea, but never will I trust a P2P based DNS that isn’t regulated. Anyone could create pbskids.org and make it a pr0n site.. Thanks.. but no thanks.

perhaps you can identify you’r website with a name. like if 2 ppl chose:

      somerandom.com – John Smith (woof?)

      somerandom.com – Smith Johnson (Meow)?

that way, websites would end up more as a catalogue. now, the list would properly be ranked by popularity, so the best sites will stay on top, and it get’s harder to steal a domain like youtube.com.

Will less popular sites be listed in their DNS or will they be like an unpopular torrent – impossible to get?

I don’t know much (anything!) about DNS, but this seems like a great move forward, I just hope they have the hardware and finance to keep up with the uptake if there’s a great demand for the service. I’ll be getting the software when it’s available.

And well you know even in France we do know how to speak english, want a proof ? do you use VLC ? probably as it’s one of the most popular player in the world and well … it’s french as well

      • Danny

VLC was created in France. But calling it French is insulting the many developers from every country in the world.

        • Klal

No it’s not an insult, it’s reality.

Opera is a norwegian browser, VLC is a french software, weither you want it or not.
The numerous developers who willingly participated to this french project are insulted by your bigotry and your stupidity.

Well I have contributed a fair amount of code to VLC and I was slightly insulted. Community software projects such as these are global, they originate in one place but are contributed to by thousands all over the world. Saying its French is like claiming it in the name of France when it is owned by all the people of the world.

There have been a lot of projects for P2P or decentralized naming systems, most of them die once people realize there is no perfect solution.

I recently abandoned my ISP’s nominated DNS for a faster one using NameBench. The instructions are here
    http://howto.cnet.com/speed-your-browser-by-changing-your-dns/8301-11310_39-57408907-285.html
But you’ll need to know the IP address or how to access your router. If you don’t know, just contact your ISP for directions ;)

I’d be happy to start using ODDNS – especially if it means my right-wing government finds it more difficult to remove me from the internetz ;) All the best to the devs, and I hope TF will give us a heads-up once the thing’s up and running (I get forgetful in my old age).

There is a quite nice alternative community DNS network called OpenNIC. They also have an option to register a domain for yourself (for free). It relies on a network of servers run by the community. Also it’s faster than my default DNS servers.

  • Umm

“I find it absurd to have to regularly pay for a domain name,”

Tell that to the spam encrusted Namecoin. Domains, as something with scarcity, should cost money.

    • Anyone

      yes, to buy once
      not to pay for annually

      • ddd

most domain names are not expensive at all, only like $5 to $20 unless they are specialty like .xxx

      • Named

He is talking about making them _free_ as in … no ‘pay one’ … just free.

Using such a system would be great for black market / scams / spam / etc.

I prefer domain names as they are, just make sure you register with a trusted registrar (one which isn’t sucking off America).

      • PsB

I don’t mind paying maybe $3 per year as this could go to improving the ODDNS system and keeps it so that not all domains end up with some advertising on them instead of a useful site and if they end up with more funding then necessary it could even spill over into other FOSS projects

Nice to see some momentum on the idea, but there is no discussion of the back end protocols, and that definitely requires some analysis. And what about legitimate claims to names? What is to keep someone from taking over google.com or microsoft.com with this system?

Exactly my thoughts. What I see, is a happy field for phishing activities… I wonder if there’s any safeguards to prevent that, or people should just blindly hope, that no one’s abusing the system?

the authorities are going to be all over this and any other system that gives back control to the people. although i am glad this and i assume similar systems will be available and thankful that there are people who are able to produce this sort of thing, what are the expected retaliations likely to be and what safeguards will be in place? as the source codes are/will be open source, the authorities no doubt will be trying extra hard to prevent anyone using the systems. they will already be looking for ways of tracking users of any new system. i anticipate the banning of anything and everything that allows internet use and in particular file sharing that the authorities cant track or trace. let’s face it, they are getting a fortune in bribes from the various entertainment industries for introducing draconian copyright laws that carry ridiculous penalties. they will not want to lose that money any more than the industries will risk losing the implementation of new, restrictive laws! i wish anyone working on these projects all the very best of luck and look forward to trying it/them out. we need a system like this but somehow keeping the authorities off it sounds harder than actually making the system itself!

I see a big problem with security. Who guarantees the IP correspond to the site you want and not a phishing site?

  • Abunchofgibberish

If this is truly decentralized, there are going to be some major problems that will have to be worked out.
For instance, people are already bringing up the issue of two entities wanting and/or registering identical domain names. If it’s a decentralized system, there is no single authority for registering them. Which one registered first?
How will discrepancies be dealt with?
How long will it take for changes to the list to be propagated across the entire P2P network?
Is this going to be a truly decentralized P2P system?
If so, I can’t imagine that a database of the address of every registered domain on the Internet being a small amount of data by any means. Will every user have to obtain this information, or will there be individuals or businesses who volunteer their servers to the propagation of this information?
How does the network cope with or prevent falsified domain information from being spread? (The potential for malware and such seems pretty high.)

The idealist in me really likes this idea, but the realist in me thinks it’s pretty sketchy.

    • mrman123123

I would imagine there will be a oddns specific domain extension used, Just like tor and i2p has .onion and .i2p, There will be some way to register your domain perhaps to an email address and whoever has access to that specific email address can change the domain registration.

Keep in mind this technology is still in development.

      • Gear Mentation

But again, what prevents hoarding or getting someone else’s rightful name?

        • mrman1123123

A registration system, Both tor and i2p have one.

Just like there could be a google.i2p but unless google inc registers that domain its up for grabs to the first person that does, Its completely fair.

Just check out i2p and you will see how a decentralized dns works.

The oddns can keep a record of existing extentions and domains such as .com .net .ca .us etc but it could also offer its own extentions such as .oddns or .p2p or .anonymous and keep up with its own extentions with its own registration system.

Sort of like a darknet like i2p but without the encryption layer.

    • Gear Mentation

In addition, why wouldn’t one just get as many domain names as possible, just to hoard them, or sell them? If you don’t have to pay for them, then there is no obstacle to such behavior.

      • mrman123123

Well that is a possibility but i had rather pay some random person for a domain name than give more money to the corporations buying one and have my name all in the whois registry so the gubberment know who i am.

So either way you slice it oddns is still better.

        • Yar

Why would it be a random person rather than a corporation or government? If i was a government and this started gaining steam, then I’d simply reserve 10,000 of the most common domain names.

They should make a decentralized DNS system that uses the current domain name system. Let a server connect to the decentralized DNS but under his current domain name. That way it is practicle for webmasters to simply install it and carry on like always. ‘decentralized DNS cache’ in a way, I guess. I love the current system because it provents spam since they aren’t for free.

It’s a good idea but I’m not sure how they’ve verify a server is the real owner of the domain name.

Guys, wait for the FAQ and the first demo to be published next week before commenting. And join ODDNS if you want to see how the potential issues you raised are being addressed, and if they are addressed in what you think is the best way.

I don’t know what will come out ODDNS but it’s great to see some enthusiasm and potential alternative in this DNS area. Even if ODDNS scope is limited or if it fails, we’ll have learned something, so it’s all positive for what I can see. And if it works under certain limitations, it might solve some of the problems linked to how governments can interfere with registrars and control web sites censorship.

  • George Wanker Bush

Trying to control p2p will have the same results as trying to control a certain harmless recreational herb.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Don-Dilly/1624894683 Don Dilly

As I see it, there are three different requirements that need covering in securing the DNS system.
It is pointless and even damaging long term to try and stop governments from meddling in the root domains administered from their own territory such as thye USA meddling in domains that utilize ICANNs TLDs even though arguably .com and .net should be considered non geographic as the usa has the .us TLD allocated to it.

What cn be addressed by alternate dns root directories and dns systems is to stop countries other than that administering that TLD from blocking its domains. ie while the UK gov could remove bbc.co.uk by blocking its use of the .co.uk tld, another country’s attempt to block the domain should be transparent and unenforcible.

The other aspect of a bullet proof dns is the addition of new TLDs that are not administered from a single country and so impossible for a government to claim juristiction over them

Finally you need a dns server or client software that can pull the whole lot together.

The one fly in the ointment I see at the moment is ICANNs TLD changes, allowing any business with the cash setting up its own TLD.
A clever move that has two effects. it entrenches people’s dependence on the ICANN root. The other is that it effectively gives provision for the USgov or the well funded MAFIAA to cause mayhem by trying to hijack non ICANN approved TLDs by creating TLDs of the sme name.

but what exactly are you using the hostname for? Every time I’ve done a torrent… It contains IP addresses, not host names :p so… DNS isn’t required.
