Pirate Party Strikes Hosting Deal With Wikileaks

During his visit to the the Swedish capital Stockholm, Wikileaks spokesman Julian Assange struck a deal with the local Pirate Party. The Party, which participates in the national elections next month, will host several new Wikileaks servers to protect the freedom of the press and help the whistleblower site to carry out its operation.

After releasing more than 90,000 government documents last month related to the war in Afghanistan, Wikileaks was labeled a serious threat by the U.S. Government. With more leaks coming up, Wikileaks can use all the support it can get, especially from political movements around the globe.

One of the political parties that has shown interest in helping Wikileaks is the Swedish Pirate Party. Two weeks ago they offered to host the whistleblower site, and during a visit to Sweden Wikileaks’ Julian Assange accepted this offer and signed a deal.

“I’m delighted that we’re able to help WikiLeaks,” Pirate Party leader Rick Falkvinge told TorrentFreak in a response to the news that was made public today.

“I love opportunities to demonstrate that one of the biggest differences between us and the other parties is that we positively leap at any and all changes to take real responsibility for changing the world, rather than just commission reports and avoiding blame like the archetypal politician,” Falkvinge added.

For Wikileaks, support from the Swedish Pirate Party is a significant win. If the Party is voted into Parliament next month it could use Parliamentary immunity to run the site from inside the Swedish Government, making it impossible to take it offline through legal procedures.

“We welcome the help provided by the Pirate Party,” Wikileaks spokesman Julian Assange said commenting on the agreement. “Our organisations share many values and I am looking forward to future ways we can help each other improve the world.”

Aside from hosting, Assange also hopes that the new Swedish Parliament will assist the site in other ways. Passing legislation that guarantees press freedom so Wikileaks and similar operations can do their work freely, is high on his wish list.

“We hope that the new Parliament will give serious consideration to further strengthening Sweden’s press protection legislation. Western democracies are not always as free as one might think, and freedom of the press needs constant vigilance,” Assange said.

“In particular, we would welcome Sweden copying Iceland’s Modern Media Initiative, something that the Pirate Party also desires.”

wiki

Pirate Party leader Falkvinge further stressed the importance of Wikileaks’ work, which has been sabotaged by corrupt or abusive organizations that try to conceal the truth from the public. “We desire to contribute to any effort that increases transparency and accountability of power in the world,” he said.

Assange on his turn recognized that his organization is fighting for much of the same ideals as the Pirate Party, and said that there might be more joint projects between the two outfits in the future. “We see more opportunities down the road in cooperating with the Pirate Party and look forward to exploring those options,” Assange noted.

just read about Iceland’s Modern Media Initiative. makes a change for politicians to talk some sense, pass some sensible laws and see the need of protecting the public as sensible too!! liked this bit as well: ‘Non-observance of foreign judgements that violate Icelandic freedom of expression protection, and the ability to file a counter-suit in Iceland against a party who engages in a calculated attempt to suppress the speech freedoms of an Icelandic entity. Inspired by legislation passed by the states of New York and Florida and proposed legislation elsewhere.’ could do with similar laws elsewhere as well, and in a hurry!!

I hope that with this increased respectability and resilience, Wikileaks will behave a bit more responsibly and will censor civilians’ names from the documents it releases.

The Afghan war logs will be invaluable primary sources for journalists and researchers for years to come. Hopefully future leaks will provide all the same relevant details without putting civilian informants in harm’s way.

This is why we have to protect Wikileaks.

Wikileaks siding with Piratebay sucks on many levels. Mainly that they are trying to garner support for exposing classified documents (killing people) from the piratebay community by associating themselves with them. Ok, that is the important part and frankly I did not see that coming. Does this mean that just one seat in the Swedish parliament will result in this type of immunity? I think that they can pull of one seat. This is a potential game changer.

The Swedish Pirate Party is not The Yes Men, and USA is not North Korea or Iran. This is going to backfire because the only people you are fooling are yourselves. Meanwhile, the people you help kill are the ones doing the same thing you are, while the real international culprits watch, clap and laugh in unison. The jokes on you and it’s ultimately funny how you talk about your “Nordic Battlegroup” as if you are going to war with the USA over a website. What percentage of the Swedish population does the SPP account for? Around 14%, if that. The only thing you are doing is pissing people off and pushing yourselves into a corner, just like you did with the international Pirate Party and everybody else. Uncovering the dirty truth about the war effort in Afghanistan, the military cover-ups of the frequent atrocities committed against civilians, and the lengths to which it’s all censored from the people back home to keep them ignorant and supportive of Vietnam II means “leaking information to the Taliban”, huh?

  • PissedAnonymous

If you really know about it, Afghanistan was already f*cked since the time when someone at the White House (probably at the time George Bush), decided to go to Afghanistan and start a war there. Under the naive premise to find/capture/kill Osama Bin Laden.

It was a crazy and ill-conceived idea and still is. Its not really the wasted US money, its the destruction of someone elses country and the fear generated amongst the people.

Thats a very serious issue and i don’t really think Wikileaks can really be blamed for releasing those documents. Especially since the US gov did the majority of the damage themselves already and who are they to point fingers at?

People need openness and transparency in order to make well informed and intependant decisions. The future politicians in our society too. Without Wikileaks we simply wouldn’t have that. Not by a long way.

For example, I live in europe, and all the news reports show the Afghan War in an entirely positive light. Its like a massive undertone on what we are fed in the news each day. It entirely distorts the public attitude, shields the more significant actual truth of events.

When our descentants open up the history books to the years 1980-2010 they wont be reading the history from biased news reports. Things that seem normal today will look patently ridiculous in the world of tomorrow.

Its really sad that wikileaks is actually our only hope for this transparency. Look at ourselves. How stupid are we to not know whats going on?

As for helping the Taliban. Well – they are just people. If you actually think about it, the Taliban are very different to us and have entirely different standards and culture, and moral reasoning to the west. We like to think they are somehow evil, inhuman. And interpret those differences in that very specific way. Its more contageous amongst the west than the Flu.

As bad are some african warloads but you really think of all those Africans who support them and the African child soldiers who work for them in such a bad light do you?

So whats the essential difference? b/c we are not a country to be declared at war with Africa. It changes our perceptions entirely.

Okay the Taliban might not be a good people by our standard, but lets stop our own madness about it huh?

Our kids WILL think we are complete boneheads for going along with this kindda achieves-absolutely-nothing war effort. Its just a matter of time, dumasses.

Of course if you don’t give a shit, yeah go ahead. Yeah – make the Talibans a lot stronger by trying to fight them (and loose)? Just screw up the entire world for MY future kids. Go ahead – of course you are entitled to after all.

This was all completely obvious from day 1 when we got the news report about it. Didnt you hear?

    Dicks.

  • Ettore

Good on the Pirate Party for keeping their name in the media supporting stuff that the general public can relate to. I mean, supporting Pirate Bay … ok, “I” support that, but does the general voting public? However, exposing corruption in governments; that’s something everyone likes and will very likely get noticed.

Making a political party that is good AND gets votes is hard; most people don’t really know what they want and will vote without knowing anything. Thus, idiotic promises are made and kept just to get votes, which sucks but it’s the only way to win.

I imagine that wikileaks is guilty of a ‘limited hangout’ in the sense that the ‘secret’ documents in question are not first tier actionable intelligence but rather stale 2nd and 3rd tier circular files.

By withholding key facts, the massive dump is protecting a deeper operation and those who could be exposed if the whole truth came out.

Since the dramatic release of a US military film of a US airborne shooting of unarmed journalists in Iraq, WikiLeaks had gained global notoreity and credibility as a daring website that releases sensitive material to the public from whistleblowers within various governments.

Their latest “coup” involved an alleged leak of thousands of pages of supposedly sensitive documents regarding US informers within the Taliban in Afghanistan and their ties to senior people linked to Pakistan’s ISI military intelligence.

The evidence suggests however that far from an honest leak, it is a calculated disinformation to the gain of the US and perhaps Israeli intelligence and a coverup of the USA and Western role in opium and heroin drug trafficking out of Afghanistan.

    Question: What about 9/11?

Julian Assange of Wikileaks: “Any time people with power plan in secret, they are conducting a conspiracy. So there are conspiracies everywhere. There are also crazed conspiracy theories. It’s important not to confuse these two. I’m constantly annoyed that people are distracted by false conspiracies such as 9/11, when all around we provide evidence of real conspiracies, for war or mass financial fraud.”

If you don’t believe the official government conspiracy that Arabs with boxcutters did 9/11, then that statement from a person who has built his reputation on being anti-establishment is more than notable.

It is true that Wikileaks might have been played, however the Afghan documents are genuine and they were “leaked” – Wikileaks did the right thing in releasing them.

What we need to do is look at the documents and not at the hubris generated by the media.

I agree with Assange on 9/11 – if it was an inside job then it will come out in time, as it is, the evidence is grey at best (not helped by the JOKE that was the 9/11 commission) and while we argue, huge injustices are being committed else where. Look at history – attempts by the elites to impose an ideology always backfire. I wouldn’t put it past the NWO/CIA to fabricate evidence that they WERE involved, just so that people would think they had a clue what was going on in the world. (Hint – they don’t!)

Wikileaks is an awesome site and good on the Pirate Party for helping then out! Great work, keep it up.
