PRQ Police Raid Takes Down Dozens of File-Sharing Sites

Police have raided the Swedish hosting company PRQ today, possibly looking for servers connected to copyright infringement. PRQ was founded by Pirate Bay co-founders Gottfrid Svartholm and Fredrik Neij and is known to host or route many file-sharing sites. The target of the raid has not been confirmed by the authorities, but The Pirate Bay team informs TorrentFreak that they are no longer using PRQ’s services.

A raid against Swedish hosting company PRQ has been confirmed today. Due to the action by police many file-sharing and streaming sites are now down or inaccessible.

All sites hosted on the 80.88./19 net are currently unavailable, including but not limited to the torrent sites torrenthound.com, linkomanija.net and tankafetast.nu, release blog RLSLOG.net, and the sports streaming sites atdhenet.tv, hahasport.com, sportlemon.tv and stopstream.tv.

Many private BitTorrent sites that use PRQ’s services are also affected.

The PRQ raid coincided with downtime at The Pirate Bay but TorrentFreak is informed that this is unrelated. The Pirate Bay says it’s not using PRQ’s services and attributes the downtime to a power failure.

PRQ owner Mikael Viborg told Nyheter24 that the police were looking for particular hardware.

“Yes, they’re looking for four servers,” he said. “It is the first time since 2010 they have done this.”

The raid wasn’t plain sailing. The police first arrived on Monday hunting for hardware behind certain IP addresses. However, due to a technical error PRQ’s systems were down and the hardware could only be identified when the systems were restored today.

At this point in time Viborg cannot say which sites or services police are targeting, but he believes the investigation is related to intellectual property violations.

“No, I have not been told,” he said earlier. “Police are sitting in the office now but I have to wait until tomorrow. Then I can find out what is happening.”

Helena Ekstrand at the Prosecutor General’s Office said she was aware that a raid took place today but has no further information at this point.

This is not the first time that PRQ has been raided. In 2006 Swedish police confiscated 180 servers in The Pirate Bay raid, servers that mostly belonged to customers that were not connected to the BitTorrent site.

At this point it is unclear when the sites hosted or routed via PRQ will come back online.

Update: The PRQ website and several streaming sites are back. The majority of the other file-sharing sites remain offline for now. It’s still unknown what the target of the raid is.

Update: RLSLOG is back online and told TorrentFreak that they are not hosted at PRQ. They do use a routing service that uses PRQ’s services, but RLSLOG says the downtime was caused by an unrelated issue.

Update: TorrentHound informed us that they will return soon.

Update: The PRQ website has gone offline again.

Update: linkomanija.net and the sports streaming sites atdhenet.tv, hahasport.com, sportlemon.tv and stopstream.tv are back.

          If a movie make 100 Mil, how do you think those profits break down? How much of that do u think the guy who works in editing or the PAs or the sound techs make and how much do the producer, director, and lead actors make? The people who do the most work make the least money.

          No, sticking a cock in a kid’s ass is a vile crime. Documentation of said crime is called evidence.

          Given that viewing and possessing such evidence is nowe illegal in many countries, it has now become quite impossible to prosecute and prevent the actual abuse.

          That’s what makes this a “free speech” issue. When a mother trying to prove her child is being abused by the father is prosecuted for creating child pornography because she was filming her child playing with itself in order to provide proof for the police, and said father then receives sole custody…that’s when CP does indeed become an issue of free speech.

          Vile as CP may be, the real reason it should not be swept under the carpet by crude censorship tools is because doing so makes the actual rape of children harder to prosecute. That’s not rocket science.

        Child abuse is a vile crime, yes. This isn’t about that.

        It’s about whether you as a private citizen can communicate privately and in confidence without the government being able to shut you down or monitoring you without any other due process than pulling the CP card.

        And as for Svartholm, although I don’t go as far as he does, he’s mainly correct. What happens when you make CP illegal isn’t that you prevent children from being abused – you just eradicate the evidence that abuse has ever happened.

        In Sweden thanks to our fine new US-branded “child porn” laws, a mother recently tried to prove the father of her child was abusing the child and filmed the child while it was playing with itself in order to prove it to the police. The result?

        The mother was arrested for producing child pornography and the father (the one presumed to abuse the child) received sole custody!

        In short, the ban on CP as it is implemented today is the pedophiles best friend, since it means no one other than the half-dozen policemen in each nation can legally discover the evidence that abuse has taken place.

        As for PRQ…if you have an instrument capable of making your communication private, then undesirable communication will take place. That is the unavoidable price of freedom of speech. And as such even CP, hate speech and extremism become freedom of speech issues.

          Since the only way you can “discover” whether someone’s confidential information contains CP (or any other form of evidence of crime) is by snooping through everyone’s information…

          Any ISP allowing encrypted communication will know that among said communication WILL be CP as well. The only response is to ban confidential communication altogether.

          And that price is too high, no matter the gains. And in the case of CP in particular, the “gains” as it is being fought today is offset by the fact that current laws make it far harder to fight the actual abuse.

      piracy is a direct response by consumers to the way we want to consume media and what we’re willing to pay for it. It is a global shift in consumption and technology and an industries refusal to adapt it in a timely manner. Rather then embrace change and be pioneers they decided to maintain status quo and force legislative measures to enforce it. Most pirates would like a legal alternative but lets face it they don’t want to accommodate us. Region locks, widely varying release dates, geolocks, licencing requiring multiple copies of the same thing on different platforms, DRM, restrictive fair use policies and the list goes on. They’ve chosen to put in place these obstacles and try to legal enforce them so is it any wonder consumers are tired of it or that they choose to go around it? Fact is the industry created piracy.

        I have to agree with this.  The industry has created the problem.
        First the system took down Napster.  OK fine.  Now you can buy a song for a buck or two… legally  Good.  Do the same with movies and perhaps the problem will effectively take care of itself. 
        My governemt has seen fit to add a tax to all blank media (tapes first, and now CDR and DVDR) which “they say” is intended to offset the cost of piracy and goes directly to the various program producers.  So in effect, I am paying for downloads (whether or not I download)…  Legally.
         
        I often d/l TV shows which I’ve missed as I don’t choose to own a DVR (I suppose someone will say I’m stealing from TIVO now?).  Often I keep shows on hand so I can turn off the Reality TV and watch something worthwhile in the evening.  I get enough of reality on my own.
        It’s just more convenient for me.  Sometimes I like to watch an entire series at a shot.  Who suffers?  The shows were available thru cable for free or perhaps not as I’ve already paid a premium for them along with my cable bill.  What difference have I made to anyones profits or jobs?
        I seldom go out to a theater… never did.  The seats are uncomfortable and it’s just not worth my time to stand in line, then sit in a crowded (yes crowded) theater with a bunch of obnoxious kids, whose parents don’t seem to care about the content of a PG movie, up front; or someone in front of me yakking to their partner and behind me texting on their cell phone (don’t get me started on that subject).
        I don’t often d/l movies anyway, and when I do; if I enjoy the show at all, I go out and buy the DVD or Blu-Ray to add to my collection.  I have a wall lined with purchased movies.  If I don’t care for what I see, I turn it off, delete it and walk away from the trash.  Most of what Hollywood is producing these days is recycled drivel anyway.  Remakes and sequels!  Come on, it’s no wonder they lose money. 
        Besides, why would I pay out $100 or more to take the family out to a movie when I can just wait a month and buy the disc at Walmart for less than $50.  Then I have it… I can watch it at my convenience, over and again if I want.

    I can’t say much on half a story when we do not yet know their motivations and how valid their actions are. Still with PRQ being a hive of file-sharing related sites then they sure have much to choose from.

    In such a case my only hope is that they are following the law in a valid way and not just copyright protection organizations abusing the law along with fooling the Police into action in some group technical incompetence.

    Well the Police have the right to hunt for law breakers and that very law they follow is our political battlefield. It is a shame that for far too long they have had their way and the law has been corrupted to the point of cruel and unusual.         I can understand how some people in European countries are having a hard time coming to grips with African and Middle Eastern Islamic immigration, because for most of these countries, like Germany for instance, were of one color and one culture except for people living in border regions, where there was some minor mixing of French and German blood and culture. The guy I buy my tobacco from is Palestinian, originally from the West Bank near Jerusalem. They had their land and orchards confiscated for Israeli settlements. The land had been in their family for generations. One day it’s theirs, the next day they’re told to get out. He cuts me a deal on some of my purchases, and I do some computer repair and set up work for him, his brother, his sister, his mother and his cousin and wife. Very warm and generous people.

        In conclusion, I doubt very much that true religious Muslims have very much to do with rape, murder or drugs in Sweden.

    Can we get some fucking news!  It seems there is a lot of good sites that ran through PRQ,  It was a safe haven for awhile apparently.  I am sure many of these sites will be back up in a day or two.  I find it hard to believe that pirate bay could be gone.   All the talk of tbp fitting on a usb stick if true should make it easy for tbp to get back up and running.  I have to admit that if the original tpb owners turned over administration to others being swedish, it seems likely that whoever runs it now is also swedish.  

    I did mention awhile ago it was likely the tpb would be taken down before the end of the year.    I will miss it if that is the case but on the positive side this will have a cleansing effect.  Just recently I downloaded a crack for a piece of software off of pirate bay and it put a nasty redirect virus on my computer.  I should have suspected it right away because there was no instructions or nfo.  So this will have a good effect of getting rid of a lot of that crap.  

    With demonoid and TPB gone it will be hard to find collections but there are still plenty of good sites although a lot of good trackers are out of commission and I don’t see any immediate replacements.  I don’t even understand how you make money with a tracker,  it is not like anyone visits the site and you make money from advertising.  So who pays for them and why?

    Since torrentfreak is not updating this story I will.  rlslog appears to be back up, some of the other sites may be as well.  The pirate bay is still down.  The pirate bay appears to have been the target as it is still down.  Despite it’s bravado and claims of mirrors and back-ups it appears not to be the case.  If the pirate bay was as robust as claimed it would already be back up.  It is likely that whatever sites come back today and tomorrow will be fine but whatever does not come back may down for the count.  I will miss tpb as we all will but it is time for it go.  I am sure tbp 2 will arise soon.

    Rlslog said on their site that it was not related to the PRQ raid because they are not hosted by PRQ, but they didn’t give any single reason for being offline for a full day, so I call it bullshit, they were impacted by the PRQ raid.

    They apparently restored a backup on another provider because the site latest update stayed on the same entries dated yesterday for a while until they posted new entries dated today.

    Question for the stupid, If I loaned you movie and you allowed me to keep it would that be copy right infringement? This is in a sense is the simplest explaination of torrent sites. We borrow from eachother. I get that some try to sell the info but the majority don’t. Another question for the stupid. when you purchase a physical book and lend it to someone to read and they intern lend it to someone is that infringement? better yet I buy an electronic book download the rights can I loan that book to someone? no why because its controled. I think from the sounds of the arguements if you get down to the basics of them you will find  a common theme CONTROL. Who has it? not us. If you want to buy a song you are limited on the times you can download it, you can not legally make back up copies of your own personal dvd’s you purchased, you can’t loan books, for that matter companies like amazon limit where you can buy them for the kindle. What needs to happen is a better way to stop the bad without completely trying to control the internet that was in theory supposed to be free. I know you may not agree with me and some might but hey the right to vocalize my opinion without retribution is in its truest form FREE SPEECH.

      There is a flaw in your logic, the problem is not that you are lending your copy to somebody else, it is that you are lending your copy to hundreds of people a the same time, while keeping your copy.  In the physical world (where your examples come from) you are not making copies of your book and lending those copies out, which is what is happening with torrents.  

      The only valid real-life scenario of multiple views per copy is this: If there are 4 people in my living room watching my movie, are they stealing it?

    I love Pirate Bay, I think that downloading and sharing of files should not be illegal. I pay to see a movie in a theatre at least once a week. Alot of my friends do as well, its about getting out, seeing it on the big screen or in 3D. Then if it was awesome I download it and watch it again, I supported there fat money lined pockets, I have 0 guilt. The world is changing all the time, jobs are lost due to automation, that’s all that’s happening here. The movie industry is evolving, “they” don’t have to like it but they need to learn to work it.

    A day later and TPB is still down. All the Pirate Reverse proxies linking to bullshit adf.ly pages, so whoever is the Admin of the Pirate Reverse domain has put money before sharing. All the Proxy Bay links down are as dead as TPB itself, understandably. I downloaded the entire Pirate Bay website with winHTTrack a few weeks ago during the anniversary when they had the South Park theme running, but it didn’t go deep enough, past just the first “Browse” pages, but I have been able to download some magnet files and get the torrents to download when clicking on the “magnet link” buttons for some of the torrents, even though TPB is currently down. Will have to check the winHTTrack settings and give it another go and spider as deeply as possible. If anyone else knows how to download every single magnet link for TPB, I’m sure it would be much appreciated by many. Didn’t someone have a technique or file to put the entire TPB on a thumb drive a while back?

    The problem is not the ability to ILLEGALY download a movie or a cd, it is LEGALY being able to burn that data to a disc by LEGALY purchasing software to do so. :):):):):):):)

    NAMBLA is a sting operation implemented by the LAPD. They busted a small mom and pop operation way back when, and took over the operation. NAMBLA sends opt-out membership applications to target populations; religious or racial minorities, political activists, the like. If you get an application, and simply ignore it, you will be automatically enrolled as a member of NAMBLA. If you somehow get on their mailing list, and don’t even get a solicitation, you will still be enrolled. It is just another way to disenfranchise “problem” voter populations.
