Stream Torrents in Your Web Browser With Magic Player

Torrent Stream Magic Player is a brand new add-on that allows users to stream video and music torrents directly in their browser. The Magic Player works with Chrome, Firefox, Opera and supports dozens of popular torrent sites including The Pirate Bay, isoHunt, BTjunkie and EZTV. It’s one of the first solutions to create a true video-on-demand experience directly in the browser.

While millions of people still use BitTorrent every day to download videos, increasingly streaming sites have become more dominant for online entertainment. Nearly every video file available via BitTorrent can also be streamed online somewhere, for a payment or totally free.

While BitTorrent was one of the first technologies to enable the easy downloading of very large video files, it now has some catching up to do. The masses want their video and music on demand, and if BitTorrent wants to remain the big player it is today it has to deliver just that.

To this end, during recent years many BitTorrent clients have introduced streaming functionality, and there are also a few web-based services that offer similar capabilities. The Torrent Stream Magic Player is a new streaming service that sets itself apart by offering a true video-on-demand look and feel through a browser add-on.

Developed by a team of Russian coders the free add-on, bundled with a windows streaming application (Mac and Linux will follow this autumn), adds a “view torrent online” option to the browser’s context menu. Once the add-on and app are installed and configured all the user has to do is right click on a .torrent link and a fancy player slides into the browser.

Providing the user has enough bandwidth and the torrent file is well seeded, the video or music track starts to play in just a few seconds. Additional controls also give the user the option to manage a playlist and pause the torrent file whenever needed.

The add-on is in an early stage of development and the developers told TorrentFreak that many new features will be added in the near future. Aside from obvious bugfixes users will get the option to style the player into a more personal look. The team is also working on decreasing buffering times to allow for even more instant gratification.

And then there’s another upcoming feature that will be a bit more controversial. The developers are working on an upgrade that will allows users to get relevant streams from various movie and music portals that don’t offer content themselves. This ‘magic button’ will appear when users browse a compatible site such as IMdB, and it will bring up suggested content to stream directly.

We tried the add-on and can confirm that it works as promised. Although the add-on can be improved on some small points it doesn’t have the clunky feel of some other browser-based torrent streaming solutions. It works well with both videos and music and is definitely worth a try.

Interested readers should be aware that aside from streaming, data is also saved on the local computer and has to be removed manually. More information, tips and tricks are available on the Torrent Stream Magic Player website.

lol mac wtf are you serious ?Have you not been paying attention at all the linux users on here? Dude if i had to use windows i would over mac but the only good thing about mac is the music and video software everything else is a copycat.Besides i have windows 7 but that screws with my cpu too much.So i stick to ubuntu and the 40 other linux distro live cds i have and um bsd distros too. :)

With Windows being free it’s just not worth the hassle for me getting Linux to work with professional software.

          @Pirat
well Linux isn’t for everyone but it sure beats proprietary software.Besides Linux has changed dramatically it’s just all about getting used to something different.I rarely touch the terminal i basically search for download files which in ubuntu is usually .deb as with windows would be .exe. But with Linux you don’t have to search on-line you just got to the software center and download it’s that simple.I guess it all boils down to what you find works best for you.

I’ve used Ubuntu before, still have it set up in VMWare on my PC for doing C programming in the terminal.

Unfortunately Wine can’t make everything work reliably, 3DS Max being a good example.

Who needs 3DSMax when we have the open-source blender… beats all other commercial 3D modelling/editing suites in my opinion.

        • Anonymous

@bsdnerd Hell yeah it’s all about open-sourced.Blender is the the best no doubt. You can’t beat open-sourced life is about open-sourced.:) I have a program on my computer called Wakoopa. Which tracks my programs on my computer to a social like website.
It’s a pretty big community and it shows all kind of programs alternatives reviews usage what things are good or bad. It even tracks websites and does the same in reviews aswell.Just search for Wakoopa. It’s multi-platform.

I have been using Max since v7 (now on 2011) and I am currently developing a game so learning again will not only be painful but use up time valuable needed.

Max may not be open source but like Windows it is free :D

TF without directly stating this point out that there has been a large recent change in the Creative Common License concept. Strange for such a big copyright focused news site to skip this one but there you go.

You can read about it here…
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-13961051

So now anyone releasing media they desire to share under Creative Commons can use these symbols to clearly state the freedoms and limitations. Best to mark media like seen above if you don’t want sharing doubt and copyright enforcement.

    • Noone

From my understanding TF is not “copyright focused” but “torrent focused”. Granted there is a certain amount of crossover but I feel it unfair to judge TF for this lapse of coverage of something that is on the fringe of TF’s focus.

Now I’m going to thank you for the link & go read it. lol

      • Anonymous

I would say TF is more copyright focused than BT focused. For example the previous article is about Newzbin2 which is usenet+copyright+law. Then the following article is a Scotish conviction which is movies+copyright+law. So the two articles next to this one are not BT news but are copyright law news.

TF can also do Creative Commons based BT news had they desired. Oddly enough though Creative Common do provide a file-sharing and promotion model that we do much welcome but TF is often just copyright focused.

It seems in the interest of all to promote Creative Commons.

Creative commons is really the future i respect it beyond respect:)

Lol they don’t allow comments. They must be scared of people correcting their articles…

So is the torrent being simultaneously shared with other users as it is downloaded, like utorrent, et al?

    • Cdirtydevil

looks like it does download to C:TorrentStream

  • townie2

^ that’s what I’d like to know. while your streaming it, is it downloading it? is that the data it puts on your computer, or is it something scarier? what about seeding back, sharing is caring.

The main question is: Does it upload while streaming?
The resons why streaming is so popular is mainly because (in germany): You can`t get busted for looking at a stream, because 1. You never made a copy, 2. you never shared the file with others.

So if you share the file with others… why not just download it anyway?

    • Scary Devil Monastery

“You can`t get busted for looking at a stream, because 1. You never made a copy, 2. you never shared the file with others.”

No that’s wrong. In order to view the “stream” you do make a copy, usually in a temporary storage folder, from which you then view the downloaded data. The only thing which differentiates the “stream” is that the data is stored in a temporary folder which usually gets wiped when you close your browser (if that is what you’ve set your browser to do). So in response to 1, yes, you do create a full copy and removal is from a user perspective strictly optional.

As for 2…assuming you are actually streaming a torrent file then yes, you will for the most part also be uploading it at the same time. Assuming standard bittorrent-protocol is involved.

    Can’t get it to work.

    Win7 64bit Pro (crack) + Chrome 12.0.742.112
    Installed extension + plugin
    Rebooted computer
    Firewall off + antivirus off
Player button on their website gives 10013 permission denied
Error log does not show up where it says it will.
Magic player button shows up on isohunt below normal torrent download button.
Player shows up when clicked and gives torrent info in right corner.
Tab becomes unresponsive, waited for 10 minutes, still nothing.
Piratebay right click player button, nothing…
    Uninstall.
Some of the .dll files are still there. Delete not allowed.
    Take ownership, delete as admin.
Reinstall, same problems. Unresponsive, wait, nothing.
And i don’t see any icons of it in my windows taskbar.
I am in the actual admin account with UAC turned on.

    Anyone?

    • Anonymous

You’ve got “10013 permission denied” error because Windows blocks TS Plugin background application from opening its port on the localhost. Plugin uses port 62062 to communicate between browser plugin and background process. This may hapen even if the firewall is turned off. There is something in your windows configuration that prevents untrusted applications from opening ports on the localhost.

Error log doesn’t appear on the Windows 7 if you have installed plugin in the default location (C:Program Files…). If you want to see log, you should install in another directory (e.g. D:TorrentStream).

DLL files may not be deleted if your browser is running. Before uninstalling you should close your browser and the plugin’s background application (if it is running).

      • Anonymous

Something in your windows configuration is a bit vague. I have no idea where to change these settings if it’s not the firewall.

  • asdf

Does this addon help seed at a reasonable level? If it doesn’t, I see bad things happening to BitTorrent.
