The place where breaking news, BitTorrent and copyright collide

Take.fm Pushes Movie Torrents To The Next Level

Take.fm is a new movie torrent indexer that is a step above the plain old torrent indexes most BitTorrent users have become used to. The site, which only lists verified and high quality releases, combines a pleasant and great looking user interface with all the functionality needed to find the best films.

take.fmEvery year hundreds of new torrent sites are launched, but only a few of these manage to rise to the top. Take.fm is one of these newcomers, and since it has something unique to offer it is likely to stick around.

Take.fm is a torrent indexer, meaning that the site does not operate its own tracker. Those browsing through the site will immediately notice that it’s unlike any other indexer. The site is developed by the owner of Coda.fm, a music site that launched last year. Similar to Coda.fm, the looks and unique features of Take.fm set the site apart from most of the competition, this time focusing on the movie niche.

TorrentFreak got in touch with the owner of both sites to find out more about his newest project.

“As I did before with Coda.fm, I wanted to create a new kind of movie torrents site, open for everyone and one that offered a user experience comparable to the best e-commerce websites,” Take.fm’s owner told TorrentFreak. “We don’t have to get used to a third-rate user experience just for dealing with torrents. I tried to build a website that I – and hopefully all the torrents community – would enjoy using.”

Visitors to the site will indeed notice that the site looks more like a movie store or rental site than the average torrent index. The movies are presented nicely and users can browse through different genres and list movies based on popularity and the date they were added. Although the site has just launched, there are already over a 1000 titles listed, all verified by the site’s members.

“The website went online only a few hours ago, so the movies available now are the ones that a few invited users uploaded during a closed beta period. We have now approx. 1400 movies and 1900 torrents. As happened with Coda.fm, we expect to build a great user base, with many contributors that could help us to greatly increase our catalog.”

Although the browsing experience is neat, the features we described earlier can be found on most other torrent indexers as well. What really sets Take.fm apart from other sites is the presentation and features of the movie torrent pages. Here users can find all the info they need on a movie torrent, including a description, IMDB rating, a review and details specific to the release such as the quality, release group and audio and video specs.

Movie details on Take.fm

kick-ass

To top it off, users also get a list of recommended titles for the movies they browse. This is similar to the recommendation engines that e-commerce sites such as Amazon have, and with enough contributors this could help users to quickly find related content of interest.

Although all of this sounds great, the movie industry wont be cheering the site on. They would argue that it assists in copyright infringements, which are against the law in most countries. Especially since all the files on the site are manually verified, anti-piracy groups might be inclined to take swift action to shut the site down. The Take.fm owner is aware of this risk, but is not planning to back down.

“Yes, we expect a lot of legal actions against us, the kind that we already endured with Coda.fm, but with more pressure. However, they couldn’t stop us before, and they won’t succeed now either. I really believe in what we do, and we will do anything it takes to stay online, as long as we have users that enjoy our service.”

People unconcerned or unaffected by the legal issues are being encouraged by the site’s owner to help out and join the team. “We just launched and we need collaborators that could help us to increase our catalog and build a community. I would like to use this opportunity to invite users that liked our vision to collaborate, uploading movie torrents and applying for moderators,” he said.

All in all we have to say that Take.fm is truly an amazing site, much like its sister site Coda.fm. A site that immediately captures one’s imagination. We have little doubt that this one will be around for a while, if it manages to stay out of legal trouble that is.

Would be better if it wasn’t swamped with adds+popup adds. I guess it might be good for those still stuck on public trackers.

Dude, AdBlock Plus. That gets the job done. For added protection, use Flashblock as well. For Firefox and Chrome.

  • Tuxie

Looks good. Maybe I’m blind, but how do I get to the other releases of a movie? If I’m on the XviD-BaR release of the Foo movie I think I should also get a list of other versions of the same movie, for example the DVD9 and 1080p.x264.Bluray releases.

  • Kaptain Krunch

Poor guy is probably using Google Chrome spyware browser which isn’t compatible with Ad Block Plus. Luckily Ad Muncher can still do the trick for such unfortunate victims.

  • Tuxie

Never mind, it just seems that they have only indexed one release of most movies and not many HD rips. Links to the other releases are listed above “Download Torrent File!” if they are available.

  • duane

This site may look pretty, but unfortunately I feel it is a step backwards in what really matters: the site operators are clearly involved in the running of the site and advertise it as being “about movies”, thus bearing all the liability. The industry will claim “contributory infringement”, and down goes another torrent site.

Of course, I don’t know the details about where the company is registered, where the site is hosted, or what the laws are in those countries. Hopefully, they had the sense to stay away from the US and Canada.

All that being said, that’s a very nice-looking torrent site, and I’ll be keeping an eye on it.

anyone know what happened to waffles.fm

This website seems to offer good looks for casual surfers in return for good functionality. Upon closer inspection, this website is actually a step back.

The site is a mess. There’s only one release per movie. Some movies are provided with crappy 700mb rips, while others are provided with high-quality blue-ray rips, with no quality or release option at all – unlike, say, Vodo.

The only thing this website does that is semi-unique is provide thumbnails on the movie listings and wrap the movie descriptions in a more organised table (to show the directors, the rating, etc).

Until they take the time to add more releases per movie, it’s useless imo. Currently, I’ve only seen one movie with two releases listed (2012).

Also, another reason why it’s a step back is because you can’t comment on each release, but you can only comment on the movie as a whole.

They should take into account this feedback.

Ghostery detects four know trackers written into the web page code. For a new web site that’s impressive!

Hosted in United States, I give this site two weeks before it gets a DMCA and shuts down. Or worse gets its domain stolen. Otherwise, the design and concept are really nice, something like eztv.it but for movies instead of TV shows. I like it.

I used to be an uploader at Coda.fm – I stopped because of 4 things:

    1. He asks people to help, and when we do we don’t get recognised (by any privileges) or even a simple thank you. We do all the work and he ends up benefitting!

    2. Everything submitted gets put into a moderated queue. Its either approved, or not or just hangs in your account in limbo – I still have releases over 1 year old that haven’t been approved or even rejected. Also when a release is rejected – there is no explanation as to why. So even when following the rules as to what is considered acceptable, they still reject it. Thank you for wasting my time!

    3. I uploaded over 600 releases and asked if I could be fast tracked to avoid waiting in a queue or even given moderator privileges so I could approve my own – nothing from the admin!

    4. There is no quality control. Uploads are like a race – its all very FIRST!!!! kinda attitude. If someone uploaded some crappy P2P copy and then a better scene mp3 or FLAC release turned up, these could not be uploaded because its strictly 1 release per title giving users no choice over quality. Usually the quality was not great either.

with these in mind I stopped uploading – there seems to be a wall between the admin and uploaders. Nothing is worse than someone who runs a site and doesnt appreciate the effort made by those that are helping to keep the site worthy of being visited.

I see the same mistakes happening here on the new site…

    1. How is Kick-Ass – a nearly 2 hr long movie acceptable on a 700MB rip when the scene release is 2x700MB? Where are the DVDR/HD 720/1080p releases? These days its all about HD and the fact that the admin hasn’t even offered these, shows how out of touch he is.

    2. Even if you can upload the torrent for a scene or HD rip – there is no way to add that once an entry already has a torrent file associated with it.

Many of the uploaders have asked him about offering different quality torrents for a single entry – that was well over a year ago on Coda.fm and still nothing has happened – so I doubt anything is going to change here on the new site.

You are all better off going to piratebay doing a search and finding the best release yourself based on the criteria you want – eg xvid.avi/DVDR/720p HD etc.

    Word.

I think both the sites(Coda.fm and Take.fm)are great for bittorrent newbies.

But we still need more trackers rather than just plain indexers.

Come join what.cd or waffles.fm for your music needs. Torrenters in the private tracker world appreciate their uploaders!

When it comes to movies, movie private trackers like passthepopcorn blow away take.fm

  • its a fake

If you cant have categories to weed out the shitty 700mb avi rips when this is 2010 then the website is shit. TPB already has a bluray category that is active and lets you easily tell file size to know if its a good quality rip or not. There are few sites like this and these are the only ones the vast majority of us are interested in. If you are so dumb as to only want 700mb movies then I suppose this site is fascinating.

With the great popularity of Kindle I wonder why there are so few books on the torrent sites.

  • Ad

So, according to comments here, it’s hosted in the States and actively searches for the best movie rips…

    …….trap?

  • Ninja

Looks awesome. And it has a big red target in its head written “MAFIAA, pls sue here”.

I’m honestly cheering on your success.

If I might make a few suggestions:
1- less ads, ppl will use adblock and other tools if there are too many adds. USE GOOGLE LIKE TINY STUFF. I don’t block such ads.
2- Add links on the movies/songs/albums directing to a place you can buy it (and it accepts international credit cards or reasonable paying policies).

They can’t say you are against them or trying to rip ‘em off if you offer legal ways to get it.

    Good luck!

  • Brudda

Too much useless bells and whistles on Take.fm. It gets in the way.
I like the minimalist approach of TPB.

  • UNF

    from Take.fm frontpage

“Copyright notice — The torrent (metadata) files that we host do not contain data that might be copyrighted in any way. No copyrighted and/or illegal material is hosted by us. It is therefore not possible to hold us responsible for the material that is being spread using this service.”

Only an naive amateur could think this bluster is any protection nowadays.

For sure this ‘not possible’ clause will soon be harshly tested in court, as the foolish reference to ‘material spread using this service’ in the same sentence will be taken as essentially an admission of guilt to the inevitable charge of contributory copyright infringement.

Furthermore, providing details of how many times each batch of copyright data has been successfully downloaded invites an award of damages for each instance, if found liable for any.

Also, the pretty expanding thumbnails of DVD covers are undoubtedly copyright material jacked from Amazon servers, whose lawyers will duly finish filing their fangs and join the feeding-frenzy on whatever remains of this guy’s ill-fated carcase.

Finally, locating this operation in U$A is the cherry atop a cake where the icing spells ‘bankruptcy’.

  • UNF

On second thoughts, given all the above, I’d say if Take.fm is not sued within about 2 months at the outside, that will be proof positive for me that it’s a honey-trap operation.

Yes, it is indeed a trap! And a sweet honey-trap indeed!

Nice site by looks, although you won’t find many old movies here… Kudos to Torrentfreak for informing us about these new sites, keep updating us with new sites…

  • DRuNKeN MaSTeR

Too much ads and pop-ups??? It’s so simple: if I have to use an ad-blocker for a site, then I won’t use the site…

Sticking with isoHunt (yes, it has also ads, but no freaking popups!).

  • hmmm

take.fm pay torrent freakto do article on them?

  • UNF

@ hmmm, no, anyone not using adblock is (indirectly) paying TF.com to publish whatever feelgood crap it imagines will increase the adclick revenue it reaps from the retinas of voracious noobs who flock to hear the Good News (‘we haz all ur win, yea!’).

As for who actually writes the pasta extruded on these pages, it seems fairly clear that Ernestax and Enigmo are the same functionally illiterate guy who merely reformats and posts the PR-handouts submitted by savvy site owners such as P. Sunde, etc, who seek a traffic boost.

  • UNF

PS: to illustrate how sensitive this site is towards critique of its modus operandi / profit motive / ‘authors’, any post which includes his name(s) EnigPox / Earn-€$to is automatically held for ‘moderation’, where ‘the rule’ is applied:

    IF comment==(adulatory OR meaningless)
    then APPROVE
    ELSE
    comment > /dev/null
    ENDIF

i.e. automatic piping to the digital memory-hole for heretics who would damp the feelgood buzz (and thus imperil the precious adclick shekel-stream) by exposing the owner of this site as a cynical, money-grubbing coward.

  • Whatever

MPAA rating ? (see picture in article)

Why use a MAFIAA rating on the site ?

@4 : Way too late, but what the heck. AdBlock Plus *is* compatible with Google Chrome.

  • TerribleTony

@40 : You think too much about these things which lead you to make wild and varying assumptions.

Any website owner who is *suffering* the strain of a hell of a lot of traffic eating up their precious bandwidth, need some form of revenue stream to pay for it. That presently either comes from advertising or the webmasters pocket usually, although new and better revenue generation methods are being developed right now.

  • FuzzyX

TakeFM is a clearly cross between a online DVD store and a BT site.

I must admit it advertises movies well which gives me interest in movies I would normally skip over.

Linking in IMDB was very helpful when on many BT sites I have had to switch to IMDB just to find out the movie details.

The biggest problem I see is that The Pirate Bay crew would have to take over the ownership of this site to keep it up. You’re going down and all a question of when and by who. Good luck keeping it up anyway.

I did wonder if they were doing copyright infringement over the movie covers but I see they wisely do not host them at all and instead just link to what is stored on Amazon. So they can only blame Amazon for supplying them to TakeFM.

I was somewhat concerned when I could not find a desired movie in my preferred format but I see they allow different sizes and types if you switch tabs in the movie information section. Yes they need to add HD support.

I can only wonder how they can have the time and effort to compare one release to another to discover which version is better. A wikipedia kind of system may be best and to let the peeps handle it.

Good luck to them anyway, a good creation, and I will visit for sure.
