The Pirate Party Becomes The Pirate Bay’s New Host

Written by enigmax on May 18, 2010

After its previous bandwidth provider had to take the site offline due to concerns over an aggressive Hollywood injunction, today The Pirate Bay is fully back in operation with a surprising new supplier. From a few hours ago, in a move intended to “stand up for freedom of expression”, the Swedish Pirate Party became the site’s new host.

the pirate bayFollowing an injunction obtained by several major Hollywood movie studios, yesterday Pirate Bay bandwidth provider CB3ROB Ltd. & Co. KG took the decision to take the site offline while it digested the legal implications.

That meant that for several hours The Pirate Bay, for the first time in many months, was taken offline. An insider at the site told TorrentFreak that people shouldn’t worry, and that the site would soon return.

By start of play this morning that promise had been kept. In most corners of the globe, the world’s most resilient BitTorrent tracker was living up to its name by coming back online with a new and as yet unnamed host.

tpb lolcat

Now the identity of the site’s ISP has been revealed, and it is a somewhat of a surprising revelation.

“Today, on 18 May, the Swedish Pirate Party took over the delivery of bandwidth to The Pirate Bay,” says the Party’s Rick Falkvinge in a statement.

“We got tired of Hollywood’s cat and mouse game with the Pirate Bay so we decided to offer the site bandwidth,” he adds. “It is time to take the bull by the horns and stand up for what we believe is a legitimate activity.”

The Pirate Party say they will provide bandwidth to the site’s homepage and search engine.

“The Pirate Bay is a search engine, and as such it is not responsible for the results,” notes Falkvinge.

The Party adds the attempts at censoring The Pirate Bay “is an attempt to silence one of today’s most important opinion makers in matters of civil liberties and rights on the web,” adding that it is “nothing less than political censorship, and something that any democratic-minded person must reject.”

With a general election coming up in Sweden, the Pirate Party’s move is also an attempt to reiterate what the Pirate Party stands for.

“It feels great to get an opportunity like this to demonstrate that we put our money were our mouth is,” Falkvinge told TorrentFreak. “We’re not your run-of-the-mill politician who commissions reports and spends 8 hours a day avoiding blame. We’re people committing our own resources and time to the values we believe in.”

“The only thing we have in common with today’s politicians is that you can vote for us, and I hope this demonstrates how we are prepared to take responsibility for civil liberties and the future of the net in a very direct way,” he added.

Meanwhile, a Pirate Bay insider remains vague about the exact location(s) of the Pirate Bay servers, and ensured TorrentFreak that nothing is as it seems. The important thing though, is that the site is fully functional again.

This is interesting… What will happen if the Swedish Pirate Party is legally asked to disconnect The Pirate Bay?
I was thinking this kind of move should have been more of a last resort kind of thing..
If the Swedish Pirate Party cannot hold up to the pressure, it would mean the Pirate Bay will have a harder time finding a good host.

10 May 18, 2010 at 14:30 by "tightasa"

I am a tad confused!Would it not be a little unwise to advertise who your bandwidth suppliers were?If nothing else would it not make it easier and quicker to serve injunctions?I suppose I must have faith in the boys who always have remained one step ahead.May they continue to so do.My best wishes to you!Plain sailing!

17 May 18, 2010 at 14:54 by FactX

This is great news :) I hope the discussion can now be oriented around whats _really_ is going on in this monkeybusiness, not only about copyright bullshit. The “industry” are a threat to a free thinking sosciety!

@#4

Yeah, please read their principprogram, I don’t care if you disagree with it but yeah, maybe it’ll stop you from saying they’re a one question party :D

LOL!!!

This must be some kind of stupid joke. So a political party decides to ingnore the decision of their own courts.

Filesharing is cool and all, but this is undermining the rule of law…

31 May 18, 2010 at 15:15 by mb

i am so happy that someone like TPB is here to fight against the MPAA and the rest of those maggots … long live TPB …. never give up, never surrender! judges all over the worl are becoming slaves to the mighty. they are corrupted servants and nothing good can come from their decisions. bloody bastards…

32 May 18, 2010 at 15:17 by PhDiddy

TPB is a beautiful thing it should stay online forever. Fuck those greedy basters who want more and more money. Thanks to TPB the poor people can have some fun too!

39 May 18, 2010 at 15:28 by anonymous

well done that man!! may you achieve the success that you and all believers in net neutrality deserve and crave for!! this will now probably end up in the ECJ, because i think the copyright industries will soon be issuing court proceedings against TPP. if that happens, at least we will all know whether the Court of Human rights actually stands for human rights or just for big business!

40 May 18, 2010 at 15:35 by nikto

@PhDiddy:

Nuance is of essence. Law is nuanced. The injunction has specific implications and scope. Not everybody who under any condition seemingly challenges a court’s decision “is undermining the rule of law.”

Even then, there’s this nifty little thing called civil disobedience which in democratic countries _used to_ act as a safety valve for when people’s will and the state’s will (under corporate pressure) did not quite align. Not anymore, it seems, since last year in Pittsburgh CS gas was used on peaceful US demonstrators who gathered to protest the G20 summit. And these days one industrialist’s vote is worth a couple million votes of the “little people.”

The Pirate Party chose an opportune time to test the limits of tolerance of corporate fascism. What happens to TPP and TPB in the not-so-long run will be a good indicator of what will happen to anybody who tries to challenge the interests of the beneficiares of corporate fascism.

Will the corporate fascism at least play by its very own rules or will it just topple the board, raid data centers, dish out longer terms of imprisonment for “infringement” than for murder, and so on?

41 May 18, 2010 at 15:36 by lao

#30 well.. since we have laws saying you are free to say and print what ever you want.. and tpb is a search engine it shoudlnt break the law..

but then we have hollywood and the trial thats is just a politic thing and court seems to follow that lead..makes it illeagal

42 May 18, 2010 at 15:37 by Cornel

HAIL PIRATE BAY!!!!!!!

43 May 18, 2010 at 15:37 by Prr

“So a political party decides to ingnore the decision of their own courts.”

No, it ignores the decision of another country’s court. The court that ordered the shutdown was German and the current host of TPB is the Pirate Party of Sweden.

Swedish courts ordered the shutdown of the tracker but Piratpartiet doesn’t host the tracker, only the web page.

48 May 18, 2010 at 15:45 by Pirate

EPIC !! TPB has shutdown their tracker and deleted all torrentfiles (that is distributed amongst the users)… What is left is a search page; And that can’t be illegal in any country !! (except maybe china)

49 May 18, 2010 at 15:51 by anOPINIONATEDsob

Freedom to think is a principle that can never be defeated in creative minds. If the RIAA wants to defend the Pirates then build a better mouse trap for these guys have displayed that they are smarter than you are so far. You build better encryption and that challenges them to be better at decrypting it and the whole intellegence base gets smarter for the challange. We all benefit from this battle of the minds and the hell with lawyers, they have done enough to hold us down for way to long. It is, and will remain, OUR internet and intelligence shall always remain NEUTERAL!

50 May 18, 2010 at 15:54 by ROLF

congrats on the decision, c u arround @ TPB! :)

ok… so swedish pirate party hosting TPB hmm… well either way after many ping tests from different locations around europe – and many tracerts etc… we found that the best ping to TPB is from Donetsk (Ukraine) :
Command: traceroute 194.71.107.15

1 194.71.107.15 (194.71.107.15) [AS 35320] 12 msec

tracerts from many other locations went via ukraine weird for the swedish pirate party to host in .ua

either way – this shows that TPB are back in ukraine – how long will this visit last?

To really make a statement, everyone should support the Swedish Pirate Party by their votes and donations.

Keep TPB afloat too by buying merchandise.

Nothing would please me more than the Swedish Pirate Party becoming the dominant political force in Sweden, even though I live in a country going downhill amid a swill of ACTA and religious humbug. (That country is Australia – I once was proud but am now ashamed to be Australian).

Long live Sweden. Long live TPB and TPP.

This is great. This was the last thing Hollywood wanted. There is a election this fall and the pirateparty has some problem reaching out through the traditional media. We can only hope Hollywood are so stupid so they sue the pirateparty. If they do that pirateparty will get the 4% votes that are needed. In the latest pools they have about 0,6-0,7% of the votes.

71 May 18, 2010 at 17:04 by Dxx

Smart move for Pirate party.

that will make some publicity and will help to regain lost members.

Grow up, learn that just because your Youtube friends think a tracert (Linux name for it btw, mr scriptkiddy) will bring down a server with a few pings doesn’t work. How about using this thing called ‘common sense’ and then Googling such a matter?

Would be fun…

No, do not worry about it. However, we found that one of the firewalls was too weak and is dimensioned and fix it right now. It takes care of routing from some operators, while customers of other through different channels and therefore will still sideways.

Hey Pirate Bay still kick’n. But you know…what happens when hollywood and everyone else goes bankrupt because no one buys their stuff? Won’t Pirate Bay disappear?

Hey I don’t mind free stuff…but ya know the producers and creators of the original media need to make money somehow to keep up operations…and good production quality..

Some respect is called for..hmm don’t know who’s side to take.

166 May 19, 2010 at 02:56 by Anonymous

@165 I think they make enough money, for exemple, Avatar make more money then Titanic on the box office. And at the same time it was one of the most downloaded torrent. They make money more then ever and the worts in this is that all this money don’t go to the creators of the movies … anyways pirate for life <3

(BTW sorry if i made some English mistakes, i'm French but i'm trying xD)

I know that I will with this post step out from the general emotion of victory. I’m just concern about future events.

What is for me logical conclusion about reason for attacks on TPB, is the idea that MAFIAA and forces behind them, knows that PP will at some point start to support TPB against this attacks. You see, MAFIAA is not only against p2p (money issues) but against solidarity and community (new form of solidarity against rule of large capital and ultimately against USA dominance) that we have successfully build around our larger trackers and site indexes.

They have press, tv and radio. All we have is Internet’s, new and not well connected propaganda machine.

Not menu people know what is at stake, they are simply to old fashioned, and continue to use information from old propaganda sources. I was under impression that we should wait (play cat and mouse) and by more time until new generations take control. With this move of pp everything could be at stake. If propaganda starts against PP what we can do to stop it? Almost nothing, since we have no influence on information served for the majority of common people.

The movement could take some serious setbacks, in years to come, if real agenda of MAFIAA attacks on TPB, is to drown in PP in fight, while it still have small footprint.

This is just logical analyses, hope I’m wrong on everything.

Hey, I’m just being picky but in the article you say “…the world’s most resilient BitTorrent tracker was living up…” — Technically the Pirate Bay does not operate a tracker and has not for some time now. Should perhaps be indexer or something.

People who oppose free file-sharing and internet piracy are denizens of hell.

People who support free file-sharing and internet piracy belongs in heaven.

Why? In heaven, everything is free. In hell, nothing is free.

Piracy = Heaven
MPAA/RIAA = Hell

Media companies want to make the world a hellish place like Hollywood and WMG while they have all the money, luxury and avarice.

Smart or not, this is a political action from a small party in an election year in Sweden. Crunch time, you might say, and the PP regained some lost initiative and got some publicity to boot. I support that.

As for TPB, don’t worry, it will always reappear with a new host if somehow the PP is forced to abandon ship ;-)

that is what the pirate bay just sent you mpaa, now the question is how persistent and how many millions more are you going to was on this, the only money you are losing to them is the money you are spending, there are 6 billon ppl on this planet. only about 300 million maybe less then that actually download movies and watch them, the other 5.7 billion is all profit, so are you really hurting for money?

Olab Thanks for the elucidation! You sound close to the fray

206 May 20, 2010 at 21:16 by Mehhh

Theft is theft, no matter how you put it.

TPB is not a ‘stab at capitalism’ as someone put it. It is damaging to artists and programmers. The former is known for moving the world forward, the latter is becoming known for doing so.

That said, piracy is currently the only way consumers realistically have to complain to price-fixing mega corporations who add DRM, stupid licensing terms, proprietary lock-ins, and commercials into purchased products.

The pirate party would have a much better reception if the image portrayed was piracy only of products that were unreasonable due to the reasons mentioned above, and purchasing of other games.

207 May 20, 2010 at 22:43 by TPB 4EVA

Pimps are pimps no matter how you slice it.

Artists no longer need them.

That prospect must be very terrifying for a pimp. He might have to get a new job!

The Horror! The Horror!

208 May 20, 2010 at 23:58 by Yeshua

So that’s why TPB was inaccessible several days ago…

Also, what is DRM?

209 May 21, 2010 at 17:55 by Gwiz

@ 206 May 20, 2010 at 21:16 by Mehhh

“Theft is theft, no matter how you put it.”

This is a true statement.

And filesharing is filesharing, no matter how you put it.

But filesharing does not equate to theft. Filesharing could be called “copyright infringement” if it actually infringes and that is usually considered a civil offense. Theft is usually considered a criminal offense.

Apples and oranges.
