The place where breaking news, BitTorrent and copyright collide

Torrent Butler, Serving Movie Torrents With Class

It isn’t often that a new torrent site comes along and actually manages to impress, but Torrent Butler is certainly one worthy of note. The site offers a wide range of movies, presented in a way that’s quite refreshing and unique. Born out of frustration with “authorized” movie download sites, Torrent Butler may both frighten and inspire the MPAA’s major movie studios.

Torrent Butler is one of those sites that is better explained by visiting, rating than describing it. Essentially it is a huge collection of movie torrents presented in a grid of movie posters. The site lists both regular definition and high definition torrents, and on the film’s detail pages users have access to information about the plot, cast, rating, a trailer and more.

The idea is simple yet innovative, a combination that’s often the key to success. Unlike most torrent search engines, Torrent Butler is focused on browsing and discovering films in an elegant and visually attractive layout, augmented with loads of useful information. Unfortunately for the movie industry, the site is not limited to ‘authorized’ film copies either.

Torrent Butler

Fascinated by the project that officially launched this week, TorrentFreak got in touch with the brains behind the site to find out what inspired him to develop it. Perhaps shockingly, it turns out he’s a big movie buff who pays for his enjoyment. “I really love movies and watch quite a lot of them. The past few years I’ve actually been renting movies through iTunes,” Torrent Butler’s founder told TorrentFreak.

Being a movie fan nowadays is not easy though, especially outside of the US where most new films are simply unavailable online.

“The problem with iTunes is that for a big movie lover and consumer like me, the number of (decent) movies that are released, is rather limited. I mean most of the ‘new’ releases on iTunes are just old, back-catalog movies, with higher-quality, recent releases popping up only every once in a while, especially in HD,” Torrent Butler’s founder explained.

“So at some point you’ve just seen them all, or all the good ones for that matter. Most of the movies are also only available in the US store, and as I don’t live there and don’t have a US credit card, I have to jump through a lot of hoops to pay iTunes, which is a another major PITA,” he added.

This troublesome experience eventually led Torrent Butler’s founder to switch to torrents instead, simply because the legal alternatives we’re unable to cater to his needs. However, this introduced another problem. Most torrent indexes and meta-search engines are not very well suited for ‘discovering’ movies.

“With torrents the search experience is pretty bad. When you know what movie you’re looking for, it’s fairly easy, but when you want to find out what movies are available it’s just a lot of work. You’re basically spitting through long textual listings, with a lot of repetition and no visual cues whatsoever. The lists are not very inspiring, and when you want to have a look at the trailer you have to do another manual search for it”

“So we fixed that problem and built Torrent Butler,” the site’s founder added.

Torrent Butler

torrent butler

Torrent Butler’s development took several months and this week it was officially released to the public. The aim of the site is, in part, to show the movie industry what a convenient and attractive movie store should look like.

“I often think why no-one else has built this before, because it’s such a simple and obvious solution,” the site’s founder said. “So I think it’s pretty big, until the studios finally figure out that they should just create something like this themselves. I really don’t mind paying 5 or 6 bucks for a rental, as long as they offer lots of good and fresh content.”

The torrents listed on Torrent Butler are all hosted externally, mostly on The Pirate Bay. New movies are added to the search index on a regular basis and by default they are listed based on popularity. However, the site also offers users the option to browse through the latest added torrents, or high definition releases only. If a high definition download is not yet available users have the option to be notified by email when it is.

In the future Torrent Butler may expand its index and add TV-torrents as well. The site’s founder told us that he is open to feature suggestions from the public. Overall we’re quite impressed with the site’s presentation. If only the movie industry could come up with something like this for the global public.

Of course this will never happen. Instead the Movie Industry will call you a scourge, attempt to sue your ass & demonize you for piracy while sticking to their dinosaur business model. So basically all I get from this article is: “Another Domain soon to be siezed – TorrentButler.com”

I suggest you buy a .eu domain brah

“The aim of the site is, in part, to show the movie industry what a convenient and attractive movie store should look like.” /agreed
That exact site is what hollywood should have done quite some years ago. They can still make money off advertising and donations, and if they did that , more people who CAN but DON’T buy movies, will actually buy them! Noone likes an asshole :) (metaphorically ofc)

        • Lordoflight42

Have any of you thought the simple thought?

          Yeah its pretty but …

Have any of you thought the simple thought? Perhaps this is a honey pot.

With the recent domain seizures it seems that anyone with any smarts would not have choosen a dot com domain. Unless they were looking for a legal fight. But this person did.

So I ask what is going on here?

    • Why It Hasnt been Built

more like you don’t want to have the FBI busting through your door. Otherwise all this functionality would be built in already in all major torrent clients.

Very cool! Now the next step is to integrate it into XBMC. :)

    • Mpalatsi

That’s already been done, all you need to do is setup XBMC to automatically add movies from a specific folder to your library.

      Heheh.
But if they’ve ANY freakin’ sense whatsoever, they should be thrilled because it’ll be the sort of model they should use themselves. Hell, the MAFIAA should buy it rather than try to get those Nazi-ICE asswipes to take it down.

Also, in chrome the bar with themes is overruled by the links behind the buttons, that way you cant scroll.

  • yogi

I agree with this guy – it’s amazingly stupid that Hollywood still hasn’t created such a site. It’s ridiculous that you can’t stream movies from anywhere to anywhere, legally, for a reasonable price.

  • http://anoxona.myopenid.com/ ANoXoNA

the layout is hard to view
One verticle or horizontal list would be much easier to view.
Same sorta idea , with banners being prominet rather than text.
    eg… http://www.re1ease.net/
A horizontal list of covers would be much more impressive.
Like the current catagories (tags) list at the bottom of the page.
Thats cool to view and functional.

The additional info is good , trailer is great.
But a javascript popup with some of the info on it, when you RollOver a banner would be better than just a cover , that you then , have to click to get the info.
    eg… http://www.tvguide.co.uk/

The “”auto load”" more content in current page is a great feature. ( the never ending web page . . new ebay styley)
Would work great with a single verticle or horizontal list.. nudge :)

The Download torrent / info is nicely executed.
A minor issue is that the links(tags) behind are still slightly visable and clickable.
Expanding the “download torrent” button background a few pixels south should easily fix this.

Overall I am quite impressed. Could be better , but what couldn’t ?

Very nice site, lots of hard to find titles. It accomplishes exaxtly what it set out to do, Easy to find and see a multitude of titles, many with multiple links. Great work.

  • Harpalos

It’s not fair to say they are the first to work on good presentation. I am a regular user of take.fm.
What I usually expect from such sites : to filter out/search by quality, audio, subt, genre.
Both sites only allow by genre, and you can sort out easely the quality.
But for the rest, it’s not yet implemented. I guess I need to wait for the new generation of torrent format, the ones with meta-tags included…

this is not going to happen as all MEDIA corporation and ENTERTAINEMENT industry dont give a crap about our choices or anything else. They only want more money without having to change anything in the current models they have set in 50 years

just let them die and let a new era of media/entertainement take their looser place !!!

just charge me 10$ on my internet and give that to the artist !!! TIME TO EVOLVE !!!

    • Anydude

Actually I would never pay such horrendous prices. Either they offer me a media flatrate of 20$ a month for all the music, movies, tv shows and games I can play, or I just can’t afford it.
If I had to pay for every movie/show/game/song I want to consume, I would need to earn either 500%-700% more or live a couple more lifetimes.

Flatrate is the only affordable model for me.

It seems to be good only for the newbies tho.
If someone wants posters and movie info, they should check out imdb or similar places.
Those who’ve been around long enough, don’t really have a problem finding stuff, even through “long text lists”. And it pulls torrents from TPB

Anyway, the more the merrier and all that ;)

    • ANON

Yeah I’m a little confused myself. Yes the site looks nice and slick. Lots of movies and great search options for narrowing it down.

But this is nothing a dedicated movie tracker could do. Hell even most general 0/day sites have IMDB info pulled into there pages for movies with posters.

Good luck to this site, shame its all public torrents though, will never get my IP in them swarms

  • Bleh

looks awesome, unfortunately i dont use torrents for movies . and just for info I use trailer addict.

Yet Another site that uses posters? *sigh* Hmm.. I can read reviews of movies to see if they might be worth watching, or I can look at the movie companies’ marketing materials. Hmm.. which should I do?

This is going the wrong way. Bring up snippets from the pages linked to by imdb “external reviews” page. Encourage torrent downloaders to rate _after_ they’ve watched, instead of the usual “thanks” button that people often click with an “I can’t wait to see this” comment.

I agree with everyone: great design! Sadly it’s a dotcom website – the fate is predictable?

What the movie/TV-industry doesn’t want to know or see – we, end-consumers, would totally pay 3-10$ (or more?) to legally download torrents. But they still live in their 19th Century idea of copyright; ‘controlling’ the content and distribution like drug-dealers or mobsters during the prohibition?

The world is divided into regions, exclusive partners & platforms. Movies & TV-Shows are bit and sold in a business-to-business market with distribution partners, and they are thinking on how to resell the same content over and over again.

I am stupid enough to buy their DVD-Boxes in the end, after watching the stuff online first, months or years before the retail-copies arrive in the country I live in. Sites like TorrentButler are a great marketing tool too. We know it – do the studios, too?
