The place where breaking news, BitTorrent and copyright collide

Warning: Don’t Visit Torrent Sites, You May Catch a Virus.

We have an apology to make. In the past we reviewed and recommended many torrent sites, but it now appears that these type of sites have to be avoided if possible.

Research from Cyberdefender, a respectable web security outfit, shows that visiting these sites can lead to a disastrous outcome. You’ve been warned.

They say:

“Avoid torrent sites at all costs – even if they are safe (not malicious), some of the ads found in torrent sites can compromise your computer’s security.”

“How to avoid it: Stick to official downloads/streams such as iTunes, Hulu/Hulu Plus, Netflix and legitimate websites. Downloading illegal software can expose your computer to trojans and spyware.”

Oh yeah, and you shouldn’t play any games either.

OMG!!!1! This is really bad! I better go and double wipe my harddrives and start from scratch. I guess now I can just get all my content from facebook because they’re safe and malware free! Whew!

  • Anonymous

Any site with ads could drive-by download you these days. A friend of mine had to reformat her hard drive because of a forum ad. Ad blocking is no longer merely convenient, but also an important security measure.

Maybe they should change their message to,

Unless you’re a linux user. If you plan to torrent, use Linux, this reduces your risk of being infected.

Ubuntu and Mac, there we go!

First they detail that the risk lies herein downloading only COPYRIGHT software/films/TV shows, for it is obvious that all other sorts of media are not worthy of mention with regards to the “trojans and spyware” they belie. Then they elaborate on why using these sites is such a dangerous endeavor, because of the advertising. Oh, that’s why trackers are listed, because of the exclusive malicious advertisers who think scrutiny from rights-holders and their corresponding law-enforcement agencies means business! Never mind comments sections; those unofficial criminals are just piggybacking in order to coerce into riddling your computer with .avi files that grow legs and pilfer your financial info from your youtube account. Woops, gotta go, my hulu commercial break just ended.
