5 Ways To Download Torrents Anonymously

With anti-piracy outfits and dubious law-firms policing BitTorrent swarms at an increasing rate, many Bittorrent users are looking for ways to hide their identities from the outside world. To accommodate this demand we’ll give an overview of 5 widely used privacy services.

With an increasing number of BitTorrent users seeking solutions to hide their identities from the outside world, privacy services have seen a spike in customers recently. Below we’ve listed some of the most-used services that allow BitTorrent users to hide their IP-addresses from the public.

The services discussed in this post range from totally free to costing several dollars a month. The general rule is that free services are generally slower or have other restrictions, while paid ones can get you the same speeds as your regular connection would.

VPN

Hundreds and thousands of BitTorrent users have already discovered that a VPN is a good way to ensure privacy while using BitTorrent. For a few dollars a month VPNs route all your traffic through their servers, hiding your IP address from the public. Some VPNs also offer a free plan, but these are significantly slower and not really suited for more demanding BitTorrent users.

Unlike the other services listed in this article, VPNs are not limited to just BitTorrent traffic, they will also conceal the source of all the other traffic on your connection too. BTGuard, TorGuard and Itshidden are popular among BitTorrent users, but a Google search should find dozens more. It is recommended to ask beforehand if BitTorrent traffic is permitted on the service of your choice.

BTGuard

BTGuard is a proxy service that hides the IP-addresses of its users from the public. The service works on Windows, Mac, Linux and as the name already suggests, it is set up specifically with BitTorrent users in mind. Besides using the pre-configured client, users can also set up their own client to work with BTGuard. It works with all clients that support “Socks V5″ proxies including uTorrent and Vuze. In addition, BTGuard also includes encryption tunnel software for the real security purists.

After these words of praise we’re obligated to disclose that BTGuard is operated by friends of TorrentFreak, but we think that should be interpreted as a recommendation.

TorrentPrivacy

Torrentprivacy is another proxy service for BitTorrent users, very similar to that of BTGuard. It offers a modified uTorrent client that has all the necessary settings pre-configured. The downside to this approach is that it is limited to users on Windows platforms. TorrentPrivacy is operated by the TorrentReactor.net team and has been in business for more than two years.

Anomos

“Anomos is a pseudonymous, encrypted multi-peer-to-peer file distribution protocol. It is based on the peer/tracker concept of BitTorrent in combination with an onion routing anonymization layer, with the added benefit of end-to-end encryption,” is how the Anomos team describes its project.

Anomos is one of the few free multi-platform solutions for BitTorrent users to hide their IP-addresses. The downside is that it’s not fully compatible with regular torrent files as Anomos uses its own atorrent format. Another drawback is that the download speeds are generally lower than regular BitTorrent transfers.

On the uTorrent Idea Bank, more than 1,600 people have asked for the Anomos protocol to be built in to a future uTorrent build, making it the second most-popular suggestion overall.

Seedbox

A seedbox is BitTorrent jargon for a dedicated high-speed server, used exclusively for torrent transfers. With a seedbox users generally get very high download speeds while their IP-addresses are not shared with the public. Once a download is finished users can download the files to their PC through a fast http connection. FileShareFreak periodically reviews several good seedbox providers.

Shhht

And then there’s Usenet.

Feel free to drop us a comment if you think we left something out, or if you have experiences or recommendations you want to share.

Because of the way that ideabank is set up, 1 vote doesn’t necessarily mean 1 person.

People can cast up to 3 votes per idea. There are actually far less than 1600 people who voted for the Anomos idea.

5 ways? The first three are all pretty similar. You sit behind a paid for proxy.

Anomos is interesting idea, but if it is anything like the other anonymous p2p networks, the time it takes to download content you would be better off walking to the shops.

as for seedboxes… they are just a poor man’s usenet.

We should all just set up our own wimax network and share files over it lol

Why GNUnet is not in the list? Technically, it’s not a BitTorrent network, but come on – if it does the trick, who cares about technical details?

Before to signup for a VPN service like Ipredator, Itshidden and StrongVPN, i will recommand you to visit: http://www.start-vpn.com/

START-vpn is a consumer protection service which helps people avoid poor VPN services and find ones they will love.

On this website, you will find VPN reviews and a list of VPN services that allow P2P/Torrent trafic: http://www.start-vpn.com/tag/p2p/torrent/

For me, VPNtunnel is the best for anonymity, securtiy & privacy! They allow Torrent trafic and they don’t keep your logs.

  • bleh

am using perfect-privacy.com – they aren’t cheap, but they have way more than usual gateways in several countries. not all of them are P2P-friendly, and you have to respect that according to their TOS, most of them have email-ports (SMTP, SMTPS and MTA ports 25, 465 and 587) blocked, since the VPNs datacenter hosts block them due to spam-abuse. i’d give them a 8-9 out of 10. I could be wrong, but I believe the german CCC.de (internationally acknowledged german hacker club) may be behind perfect privacy. Their customer support is outstandingly fast in response. One hosts that ARE P2P friendly, are impressively fast, and i’m running a 50/20 mbits fiberoptics line.

  • bleh

ADDENDUM: what i like on perfect-privacy is their transparency in whats going on in their network, in terms of how many folks (just by numbers) are using what bandwidth on which gateways/locations, and how many of them are using openVPN, SSH2 tunnels, PPTP, squid, L2TP or socks5 – which are all supported!

  • J

Use a OpenVPN provider the most reliable alternative right now. However PPTP is more convenient.

Then you can use VPNCheck to secure your connection.

Don’t forget using only IPv6! With ipfilter.dat (in uTorrent) set up to block the intire IPv4 range, you’re probably home free for years to come.

Remember, those greedy lawyer bastards are some 10 years behind the rest of the world when it comes to technology, they probably cannot even spell IPv6 yet.

If you haven’t done so yet, it’s high time that you do — get yourself an IPv6 channel för free(!) at http://www.sixxs.net/

It’s funny how sites that require registration/payment qualify as “anonymous”. How long until lawyers/cops raid those sites, which nicely have your name, address, and credit card number on file? Heck, maybe even download logs, which the Provider collected (despite claiming he wouldn’t) just in case he needed a plea-bargaining chip.

I have been using BTGuard and my experience so far has been great. I have used it on windows with the encryption, this was quite a lot slower than normal but still worth it. I am currently using it on Ubuntu with transmission and it was so simple to set up. Well worth it.

All the paid services in the world aren’t going to help the stupid that receive a threatening phone call from someone they don’t know and immediately admit to a felony that they don’t understand and are likely not guilty of. A case of file sharing on technical grounds alone seems an easy case to defend given that it is “technical”. A much better allocation of a persons money would be on taking a beginning legal class and reading some case law around citizens rights especially the 5th amendment.

IPv6 has nothing to do with privacy. It doesn’t hide your IP. The only way to do that is via proxies.

VPNs are a temporary solution. They will reveal your identity when the law tells them to. And ISPs can block ones that do not.

Which leaves only long-path proxies like Anomos/Tor/I2P/Freenet – all of which are slow, unreliable, and so chock full of crime worse than piracy, none of them will last long in a large scale.

So no, there is no new great anonymous piracy technology. This is the end game.

    Sorry Anon@50, it doesn’t.

the majority of the list contents are either varied government agencies (no point in that), a multitude of software companies (‘they have an interest in copyright’) – including Anti-virus update servers – and just random IPs that either look ‘suspicious’, or belong to list critics.

Our researcher is working on a video explaining why it doesn’t work to block anti-p2p companies and their logging bots. Hopefully it’ll be done soon.

Beware of StrongVPN, they will disconect you with one DMCA complaint, no oportunity to respond first.

“So no, there is no new great anonymous piracy technology. This is the end game.”

Go and hide in a cave like Ben-laden then.

But for the rest of us this is the deal.

With computer, no software is permanent since the technology evolve at rapid pace. Anonymizing applications are not immune to evolution.

We are engaged in a cyberwar against the corporations of parasites to preserve our freedom and they are trying very hard to get us with the yesterday technology that they think are advanced while we are moving circle around them.

    These are some options.

TOR is slow but it work great and the more people use it the faster it goes.

VPN is probably a long term solution because VPN server can be hosted anywhere in the world.

Yes the enemy can find out who is using predator but only by breaking the law and illegally spying which of course they will do. However it is not going to help them since they would have no clue of what we are doing with our VPN.

They can not force governments to make VPN illegal since many businesses use it to decentralize their intranet.

Once you are setup with predator all your internet usage including Email, browsing uploading downloading is anonymous people use it for everything not just sharing files in P2P network. They might know that somebody using a VPN server is sharing a file but they will never have any way to know who is it. No matter what a judge order if there is no log there is no log. I trust Predator for that. In a sense for now Predator is like a nuclear weapon. O course they can force VPN services to maintain a log in some countries but they will be always places they can not reach where it is safe to keep servers.

Each anonymizing solution have their +/- but most of them are good.

Besdie anonymity is not really needed yet since the enemy don’t have the resource to spy on million of people at a time. Even if you seed torrent the chance to be bother is really small and with BT their evidences will be very thin.

However it might be time to deploy privacy weapons since the corporate parasites continue to corrupt our justice system and big brother is working hard.

For downloading I recommend peerblock for a start associated with microtorrent. This is enough.

    Use Predator for seeding.

Personally I am using Predator for everything and it is working great.

Just don’t put any personal info into Facebook. Use fake name fake BD fake location fake email and so forth.

  • Would Be

    Anomos needs an atorrent site.

  • Usenet User

For about the same price you’d pay for a VPN, you could instead get a USENET account, where you can download files at full speed all the time.

Once you discover Usenet, I promise you’ll never go back to using torrents.

  • Anonymous

“Beware of StrongVPN, they will disconect you with one DMCA complaint, no oportunity to respond first.”

No because they don’t know who you are nor the VPN host so a John do laws suit will have no effect and will disconnect nobody. At worst the VPN server will have to relocate.

Moreover the DMCA is only for the US.

  • ctman

@61 I am in the US and this happend to me. StrongVPN keeps logs and cooperates with RIAA in that Strong knows when and where you go and will disconect you with a DMCA notice that cross references to your IP date and time. When I say they will disconect you I am refering to what Strong has control of, their VPN service.

  • Anonymous

“It’s funny how sites that require registration/payment qualify as “anonymous”. How long until lawyers/cops raid those sites, which nicely have your name, address, and credit card number on file? Heck, maybe even download logs, which the Provider collected (despite claiming he wouldn’t) just in case he needed a plea-bargaining chip.”

No because if there is no log there no information on the server indicating what IP address is downloading/uploading what and when.

The only thing they will have is the list of subscribers to the VPN.

So let’s say the spy on the net and monitor the uploading of a file containing a Britney slutt crap. The find out that the IP address correspond to a VPN server. They have to sue john doe and the get a judge to subpoenas to host or they got the police to raid the server. Since there is no log there is no info on the server indicating what was the IP of the uploader.

To make thing worst for them most if not all VPN services use also proxy servers. So the IP they will get is the IP of the proxy who has an encrypted connection to several VPN. By raiding the proxy you know all the IP address of all the VPN but if there is no log it is impossible to know what VPN server was involved.

I mean with VPNs and proxys it is endless and any attempt to find out the IP address of the uploading machine become a wild goose chase.

I am not talking about download at all because there is nothing practical they can do about downloading even now as we speak. That would be the same thing though.

Anyway giving the amount of resistance deployed by the public who is ready to pay $5 a month to a VPN instead of to the unentertaining industry of parasites say a lot about the futility of their effort.

We are NOT, I mean definitively NOT going back to them buying their crap not matter what they do PERIOD!

They should have surrender to us long time ago.

    Now it is over.

Here’s my thoughts on the subject of ip blocklists. They do NOT protect you, and they’re worse than useless because they lull you into a false sense of security.

Here’s why. Imagine that you are a big movie/music company. How would you find out who’s “pirating” your material? I’d do something like this. Somwhere in the basement I’d have a room full of laptops manned by a couple of techies. Each laptop would have a separate ADSL (or whatever) connection to a variety of ISPs and phone companies using normal domestic accounts. These phone numbers and ips have no relation to the phone lines and ips that your company use and would therefore not appear in blocklists. Each laptop would use an opensource bittorrent client (several of these) modified to create logs of all connected users (ip no., time, duration, torrent filename, etc.) to a standard of evidence acceptable to the courts. If any of your “user” ips get revealed in court and get put on blocklists you simply terminate the account of the compromised laptop and start a new one account with a new ip.

By the way, the reason this post is anonymous is because for my day job I’m a techie working in a basement for a well-known company in L.A. – you get the idea.

  • Anonymous

“Here’s my thoughts on the subject of ip blocklists. They do NOT protect you, and they’re worse than useless because they lull you into a false sense of security.”

You don’t what you are talking about.

Even if we do nothing they already can not catch us. The only thing they can do is pickup with difficulties and great expenses few exemples they can take to court trying to terrorize the rest of us.

    Obviously it did not work.

So if anyone use Peerblock it make them really safe since they are safe even without it.

And as far as download is concern this is very simple: They can not do anything at all even if you don’t block them.

@58 “TOR is slow but it work great and the more people use it the faster it goes.”

Hold it! You must be thinking of Freenet. For tor, it is the opposite. The more people using TOR, the slower it goes.

What’s more, using Bittorrent over tor *exposes* your identity instead of hiding it. An attacker could even correlate your BitTorrent downloading with the web traffic you send over tor.

If your serious about being able to share files securely and without being targeted its not about staying completely hidden. Nothing is 100%. Its about staying off the radar and hard to get to.

I personal use a seedbox with a SSH tunnel. That way I have my own VPN setup and still the remote server as well.

It keeps me off the radar and hopefully out of the cross hairs. A seedbox really seems like the only logical answer if your serious about file sharing. I have a 10 TB upload on IPT and growing after less than a year there.

I have tried several personal VPN services and suggest:

    http://www.perfect-privacy.com/

    http://www.tuvpn.com/

Both offer OpenVPN, multiple servers, no logging, and are P2P friendly. Neither is the cheapest, but both are solid VPN services.

I received 2 notices within a month, signed up for TUVPN, and haven’t had any additional issues.

I also remove my non-VPN connections from the Windows routing table, so there is no automatic fall-back to a standard connection if the VPN connection is lost.

why not just use rs/mu/ and other isn’t that more anonymous then torrents?

Okay peeps, I am currently looking at a little program called Weezo.

I’m having some difficulties getting it working out of the box BUT it’s looking good for security & privacy.

As for speeds I can’t say as yet because I haven’t got it fully set up.

It’s free & is well designed & if you can get it working should be good.

Just google for Weezo, its a french program so the forums are in french which is why I’m having difficulty.

But even though its meant for personal one to one sharing (i.e. Family & friends) I think we have all made enough contacts through torrenting that if enough people start using this we could all have our own private sites with a small number of users interconnected to each other so the spread of material is still the same.

IF I CAN EVER GET IT WORKING!

  • Its Hidden

    @2

Completely agree with you. Free account is easy to set up but once you pay you get no support even though it’s all on their website. The accounts are somehow faulty once you’ve paid.

  • Sounds good

Nice to at least see ‘seedbox’ listed in this post.

VPNs (and proxies) such as the first three/four in the list (thanks commenter #3 for clarifying) will inevitably have intermittent periods of downtime whereby the user gets disconnected from the VPN. This is natural; no hosting providers or services can guarantee 100% uptime. If you’re on a Windoze PC and this happens (and it will), you’ll be auto-reconnected to the internet using the next-best connection, and that’s your “default” Network Adapter (which so happens to be your ISP, direct – now you’re true IP is being exposed without you even knowing about it). Even if a VPN service goes down for as little as just 10 seconds, Windows will revert to its default to try to reestablish a connection to the net.

There is at least one application that will automatically kill your running P2P programs… or any other Internet app of your choice… IF/when the VPN connection dies. For example if the VPN disconnects, so with uTorrent. Few, if any, VPN providers even mention this. If you MUST opt for a VPN, it’s always a good idea to check out VPNetMon (it’s free):

    http://vpnetmon.webs.com

Please, if you use a VPN w/P2P apps, practice safely.

They keep no logging what so ever and are p2p friendly. I have had to talk to support while trying to set it all up and they were friendly and able to help me get connected rather quick! I would definitely recommend them to people here.

(RE: 14) Most of these sight are legit because the majority of people who use these vpn services do so because they provide an encrypted tunnel while using unencrypted hot spots such as hotels. But some of them might as well protect their asses from the enemy who seeks to destroy them if they upload files to the masses. So unless they suspect you to be a terrorist, I doubt that they are going to spend the time and the money to subpoena the whole site. Besides, not every site has your credit card. Paypal is an option and another hoop they have to jump through to get at you if you use their services.

Can’t hide on the net. Always a way to find out a owner of a seedbox or a vpn account. Remember, u always connect to your vpn/seedbox with your real ip.

  • perus jamppa

    @84
Connecting to seedbox via VPN service or fast proxy oc. Only hard to find the way pay anonymously.

Perfect Privacy looks like a promising VPN but I really do hope they’ll add a iRan sever someday

because in iRan no one would give a fuck about the U-asS jurisdiction

Does anyone know of any pay per download VPN? for example I use astraweb for usenet where you pay by blocks of data e.g. 180gb for £15

  • PrtCpt8023

You can’t download torrents anonymously only pseudonymously. There is a big difference.

been downloading films for 5 years now, use nothing special to protect myself, never had any problems from anyone. Live in UK can anyone explain that?

You are living the reality of it.

Going out of your way to protect yourself is just wasted effort.

There is at least one application that will automatically kill your “running P2P programs… or any other Internet app of your choice… IF/when the VPN connection dies. For example if the VPN disconnects……”

    http://ivacy.vpn/en

They work like a Firewall and block your ISP for all other connection.

    Pefect !

Another good free VPN service is VPNReactor.

All this talk about VPN to hide your IP.

I see no talk about will the VPN service not give out your info if asked for. This is the real question, as they have logs also and you connection can be traced back to you with a little work.

You are only making it a little harder for someone to track you down. Maybe that is enough these days and they go after the easier fish.

How can there be a money trail if you use a prepaid visa?

  • Fu

And @95 Rainey, I did bring this up in a previous post, but I will say it again, if you sign up with a fake name and a throwaway emailaddress as well as using a prepaid visa… How are they going to track you down? The vpnprovider don’t have your correct info…

“How can there be a money trail if you use a prepaid visa?”

sure you leave no money trail but they can have your ip to trace you

using your neighbor’s wifi is currently the best solution

I’m moving into the dorms next week and they pay people to monitor downloads and what not, would a vpn solution still work to hide what I’m downloading?

btguard sells VPN, openvpn + pptp

@44 “Which leaves only long-path proxies like Anomos/Tor/I2P/Freenet – all of which are slow, unreliable, and so chock full of crime worse than piracy, none of them will last long in a large scale.”

Not true for I2P. Very reliable, fast (as for anonymous network) and no crime. In addidtion, I2P IS NOT a proxy (ie. you can not access Internet via I2P). Please do not make statements on subjects on which you know nothing.

  • Motard

@102 – yes, it would. They may see that you are connected to a VPN server, but that’s all.

  • JD

To the person that said using a prepaid visa and a VPN means you can’t be traced down, well think about it:
You connect to the VPN with your ISP IP (Your IP) which can then easily be tracked back to your home.

If you’ve got the money then using a combination of a VPN and SB would be *somewhat* better.

    You > VPN > Seedbox
    or better:
    You > VPN > Seedbox > VPN

    With a prepaid visa.

  • Ohplz

As for the idiots continually advertising seedboxes in the comments as well as in the article:

You have to register and pay for these with your REAL NAME and, usually, bank account or (registered) credit card.

The IP of the seedbox OF COURSE shows up, I can list 4-5 of them right now just looking at my peer list, some from OVH, some from Feralhosting, etc pp.

    So, seedboxes:
-show their IPs to the world, as does any machine wanting to connect to another, but that’s not the crucial bit yet, as they also

-must ensure that the people who paid for the seedbox line up with the people USING the seedbox => always know when you were using what seedbox account and hence KEEP TRACK OF YOU AND YOUR USE IN ORDER TO EVEN BE ABLE TO FUNCTION

-know you, your name, address and can be easily injunctioned and subpoenad to reveal you and have your butt handed over to the authorities

There’s nothing anon about using seedboxes AT ALL.

Prepaid visa or services like Ukash + a truly non-logging VPN host and/or a double-chained VPN logic might be the safest thing you can do.
Another alternative without P2P would be anon paid for VPN + anon paid for Usenet if you can find the latter(most again don’t allow anything outside of CC or wires or paypal..maybe the odd one out allows odd stuff like eGold).
