A Brilliant Open Letter Song On Piracy To Lily Allen

Written by enigmax on September 26, 2009

This week Lily Allen’s views on file-sharing have been the hot topic. While some agree with her calls to ’save’ the industry from a fate worse than death, others did not subscribe to the doomsday scenario. One of those is UK musician Dan Bull who has written a brilliant song-come-open letter to Miss Allen. We hope you enjoy it.

safeSay what you like about Lily Allen. Agree with her. Disagree with her if you like. Whatever the position, it’s difficult to take it away from her – she has done more in the last week to raise the online debate over illicit file-sharing than any other artist in recent months.

Lily has managed to capture the imaginations of both sides – people are talking about this issue and that is always a good thing.

Debate, discussion and hopefully understanding will bring this file-sharing ‘war’ to an end one day but in the meantime let’s not forget what this is ultimately all about – the music. We all love it and that’s why you’ll love this too;

“After Lily’s hectic week I’ve made a pro-filesharing song and video calling her up on a few of the claims she’s made,” UK musician Dan Bull explains to TorrentFreak.

“I’ve also tried to outline some of the main moral arguments for filesharing in the lyrics. Hope you enjoy, and hope the readers do too.”

The song is brilliant in my opinion, and, ironically I suppose, i’d like to give Dan some money for his work, he deserves it. Let’s hope this song gets to Internet #1 this weekend and he reaps the benefit. Now if I can just get the chorus out of my head…..

…or if you prefer, download the MP3 here.

Dan’s MySpace page can be found here and his album ‘Safe’ is available from FreshNut but can also be downloaded digitally from iTunes, Amazon and Napster.

You can grab it free of charge here or using Mininova.

8 Sep 26, 2009 at 12:40 by Encore666

That was awesome! Dan Bull, you rock!

Dude if you ever read this, please consider writing a replacement song for The Pirate Bay (that “We’re all the pirate bay” song from some months back had the right idea but at the end of the day it sucked)

9 Sep 26, 2009 at 12:42 by Whatever

Did she also get the link to this track ?

I guess one of the following will happen:
1. She’s kicked of the internet for pirating and can’t respond.

2. She will make a fool of herself again.

3. Or say something like “See, I told you so, they are abusing me even after i quit.. those damn PIRATES”…

4. Will try to sue everyone involved meaning everyone who heard or helped create and/or spread the song.

5. Most likely, no reaction at all and in a month or 2 she will be back in the music business as being a hypocrite goes to a new level.

10 Sep 26, 2009 at 12:51 by Pantman

WOW! That was good!

Bravo!

Good song, great message… unfortunately it may be a bit too intelligent for silly Lily – the ninny, with a brain not worth a penny.

13 Sep 26, 2009 at 13:05 by anonymouse

absolutely superb!! many congrats, what a shame it will fall on the deaf ears of her and other artists that belong to the big labels, as well as the music labels etc themselves.

As a regular (daily) reader of this site, and as a long-time computer user, I became bored of the whole ‘debate’ a long time ago and that’s why I do not post regularly anymore… but I HAD to say congratulations to Dan Bull for this very entertaining song!

Also, big thanks to TF for bringing this article (and many others) to my attention, and thanks to the people who can be arsed to post (pro and anti alike… after all, it would get pretty boring around here if everyone held the same point of view). Your passion for the subject entertains and informs me on a daily basis ;)

Now, if only I could get that song out of my head…

“Dear Lily, dum-de-do-da…”

18 Sep 26, 2009 at 13:25 by This week's #1

Haha that’s awesome, good work. Even the accompanying video was good (was wondering prior to watching where i might find the lyrics).

The music isn’t really my style, but the lyrics are brilliant and I like how he takes the piss out of her terrible, terrible faked accent.

Nice one, Dan, we need more artists like you. I will be buying your CD.

Damn the song is stuck in my head now LoL

23 Sep 26, 2009 at 13:42 by no

Say what I want about Lily Allen?

Okay. What I want to say about Lily Allen is that I have no fucking clue who she is, other than some moron who doesn’t understand even the most basic concepts of copyright and is apparently a musician of some sort — possibly only in the UK.

24 Sep 26, 2009 at 13:43 by enigmax

@22 How do you think I feel? I heard it about 6 hours ago and it still hasn’t stopped xD

27 Sep 26, 2009 at 13:50 by Joe Public

Where can i buy just this song.

I would love to see it get enough sales to see it in the charts and hear it on Radio 1 or MTV.

That would really get the word out there and I am sure that even Silly Lily would get it then.

Yours sincerely,

Joe Public

Wow, I don’t have any clue what this guy’s music generally sounds like, but I’m definitely going to head to CDBaby or Amazon this weekend and *PAY* for a DRM-free digital copy of his album.

Very clever. Much respect.

51 Sep 26, 2009 at 16:02 by Youtube Viewcount capped.

Is it just me, or is the view counter stuck on 305 on YouTube? With 380+ ratings and 130+ comments?

This viewcount capping by Youtube is becoming quite transparent, only exposing what videos they want to keep out of the front page.

Proves Google is slipping from the ‘Don’t be Evil’ slogan, I guess, or have given moderation powers to the music industry.

52 Sep 26, 2009 at 16:02 by barakuda

Seems to be the most commonly reported Youtube bug: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/youtube/thread?tid=17f0843c4bab76e8&hl=en

To summarize, their astroturfing filtering sucks. Or they handpick videos to block. Who knows.

55 Sep 26, 2009 at 16:25 by lobotrom

Nice!!!

56 Sep 26, 2009 at 16:26 by Whatever

Although i would usually find rap not to interesting (it all sounds the same) this song sounds alright and although simple video its just exactly fits the song. Nice touch with that accent.

Nice work on song/video combination and that without a multi-billion industry.

It must actually have been a lot of work after all was done to time the text in the video correctly to follow the music (it isn’t as easy as it looks).

69 Sep 26, 2009 at 17:31 by MissedMemories

“Dear Lilly, why you’re beeing this silly?”

“Because I want”

That would be the perfect answer!

In any case.. I would buy the song if I had money … in the mean time.. I’ll just listen to it..

70 Sep 26, 2009 at 17:49 by rierro

Jesus. I saw the ‘a song about lily’ and was prepared for the worst song ever.

He managed to make this song both catchy and intelligent…damn.

I personally think it’s worth paying 1$ to support.

71 Sep 26, 2009 at 17:52 by Robbing Hood

Awesome, brilliant love it!

72 Sep 26, 2009 at 17:53 by Dan

It was a good song i guess but seriously the tune was way too repetitive –
like some other people said, it will be stuck in your head for hours. Did he take an instrumental of one of her tracks?
that would explain the annoying tune :D Damn Pop Music

73 Sep 26, 2009 at 17:58 by MultiCast-DHT Tunnels

im afraid i cant buy this music as its being distributed by that pirate person Dan Bull on the file sharing sites for free, so it must be a pirate copy :)

it not on the opproved play lists and so i dont know if i like it enough to buy it….

good old British song style there Dan, can you do a few anti mandy (mandelson), and Pro (UK)Pirate party featured songs too for popular airplay and Elreg news mentions… perhaps.

74 Sep 26, 2009 at 18:16 by KloWn

haha that’s great…… Think it’ll get the message through? lol

He’s got my donation.

76 Sep 26, 2009 at 18:21 by MultiCast-DHT Tunnels

dan do you do any Creative Commons licenced content we can play around with and remix perhaps ?

then you and we could start putting some new Creative Commons content on the likes of the new Pirate Party Canada Creative Commons BitTorrent Tracker

http://www.pirateparty.ca/captain
http://www.pirateparty.ca/
http://torrentfreak.com/pirate-party-canada-starts-a-bittorrent-tracker-090925/

perhaps the UK PP can also do some CC and mandy can cry like a baby….

77 Sep 26, 2009 at 18:27 by Bill Boner

Thank You, you’ve managed to make me want to bash my head into a wall. I can’t get this song out of my head now

Awesome job though, seriously

:D

78 Sep 26, 2009 at 18:43 by Anonymous

Maybe Lily Allen is right, maybe file-sharing unchecked will destroy the record industry. Perhaps some ‘artists’ will struggle to survive without a the weight of a multi-billion dollar, trans-national company behind them. Without a million dollar expenditure of revenue on advertising and marketing perhaps music will become less about business models, market penetration, brand awareness and target demographic. Maybe without the support the global entertainment media giants selling music will become about more about whether your tunes are any good.

79 Sep 26, 2009 at 18:43 by nah in bmore

Im iffy on the tune…I cant decide if I like it or not. Though, the lyrics are reasonable and logical. Stop worrying about pirates, the people that want your music will buy it, go to the shows, or spread it.

Also, that is a cool effect of how he got the typing in synce with the song..awesome

80 Sep 26, 2009 at 18:44 by TheTruth

Hope this doesn’t encourage ReasonedMind to make his own song defending copyright. But on second thought, nah, he can’t… he doesn’t know ANYTHING about music…

hahahahai love it

93 Sep 26, 2009 at 20:11 by ultraleetj

well the concept is certainly interesting, but what’s still the sad part’s that most “musicians” buy or get the track and add new vocals and that’s a song, and the composers and such get all discreditted. i’ll ahve to say its a nice conept and the lyrics are indeed killer, but I think there’s much more to musi than a repetitive layer of instruments (notice how its almost always the same rhythm?) and the musicians don’t have jobs anymore except for live events on which they can no longer depend on their allmighty electronic producers. In that case the people who don’t know anything about music (many don’t from a technical or study standpoint) regard the group as superior because of the live musicians playing there. Then buy all the dull-sounding instrumental tracks with vocals on them and the artist makes more money. Also, notice how the comercial cds cost much more than those cds from other independent artists who probably put musicians at work. So this is why iin principle its so easy to make a song, you just go to some site like:
http://www.shadowville.com
and buy the lisences to the track you liked! not even the track, but excuse me, the “lisences” for 500-1000 uses, or more than 1000 uses ETC . then you plug a microphone into you computer (a descent one) or go to a recording studio and that’s it! now get out on the streets and pretend that you are the master of music who knows how to write and read it, who knows by heart the stem positions of the notes, ETC . and try to sell. Sell like mad! if you can’t sell then maybe a record label can help you, and if you’re too good of a musician then you’ll probably hit up the big labels, who will be more than happy to use you for their own comercial gain. True musicians, in a nutshell, don’t do this kind of crazy, mediocre stuff.

94 Sep 26, 2009 at 20:17 by Hans Pandeya

98 Sep 26, 2009 at 20:30 by Kwork

Great song. I thought it was an original melody at first till I found it was Lily’s own music for “22″ with new lyrics. Still very catchy.

99 Sep 26, 2009 at 20:32 by Kwork

Since the music would be copyrighted, I imagine the youtube video will disappear at some point soon.

100 Sep 26, 2009 at 20:44 by Me

As #87 points out, the tune is from Lily Allen >It’s Not Me, It’s You >22

He does admit that its her “beat” in the song.

Awesome parody Dan, It was truly brilliant wakening and listening this morning

Keep up the good work!

p.s. wonder if she will have the balls to do some work and hit back with a reply video :P

So this lili alen is an arse but she has a point. if we want amatur music, then thats what we get record companys wont sign or promote bands if there is no money in it
I konw it dont sound good but there is no free lunch and I like music enough to want it to be good not just free

You’ve got it all wrong. Good music is created by people who love music and not by people who get paid for making music. What does that mean exactly? People discover their talent for music in their teenage years: They buy their own equipment, they pay for their rehearsal rooms and they advertise their music by giving away demo-tapes or mp3’s. If their music is any good they will soon start touring making gigs and earn money. It’s NOT the other way around: People get paid for equipment, studios, villas and luxury cars, and then maybe release a 40-minute CD for 30 bucks that SUCKS!

Since when did record company = good music?

What you call amateur music is usually the kind of music people really want to hear, not all that factory produced pop crap promoted by the large record companies and the media.

Dan Bull is a perfect example of how a so called “amateur” musician can be extremely talented and produce something people like. I say fuck the record companies, who really needs them in the age of the internets anyway?

Absolutely superb!
Great message and hits the nail right on the head, Dan Bull, you’re a genius!

129 Sep 27, 2009 at 01:23 by Wilhelm Reuch

Yeah, absolutely perfect. Now you are even more on the right track here. Ridicule the artists – that will make them more positive to your ideas right? At least show them your right face – as immature nerds.

Hahaha.. 10 times better than anything Lily Allen could come up with. Great tune. I’m going to look for ways to donate some cash to this guy. He deserves some. I think we all should give a little too, support people like this.

Ohoy Maties, 3rd Reich Troll @129 o’clock! Set sails for infinite ramming speed!

Yes let’s indeed ridicule and piss off more of those moneygrabbing assholes. On a good day they would follow Lilly’s example and get the hell out of Dodge so there will more awareness of independant artists like Dan Bull.

Hey Keyser Wilhelm, instead of whining around here, don’t you have a HMV shop or something to go to, so you can get down on all four and take a load in the face from the record industry.

I don’t know who Lilly Allen is and honestly don’t care, but this reply song is good. Also forget buying, donations are the proper tool to show appreciation, when you can’t go to live shows.

I don’t live in UK or USA or any place where they pretend to criminalize file sharing, but i fully support your struggle and condemn those who want to impose their egoism with terror.

This war will not end until file sharing is decriminalized. Its their profits or our freedom; the answer is clear.

@121

‘OK I know this dont meet with current views, but if we want to listen to new music instead of the beatles reemastered, then bands need to earn money. equipment, rehersal rooms advertising etc costs.’

Nope, they don’t. Not in your sense of meaning. Think about it, it’s not what you mean after all. Everyone need to earn more money then the expenses after all.

What you mean is that the band have a right to get all invested money back, and then some.

Sorry but that is a choice and a risk you take, investing in your self. Still don’t give you the right to get every invested penny back.

Would be intresting to see…or hear the conversation turn into song. But Silly Lily has the backing of the Corparation and it probably would turn into a onesided message when they start playing it in the music media. If she responds,it should be kept only on the internets, musician to musician. That would keep it intresting.

Damn, thats one catchy tune.Love the lyrics:)

I dunno, the internet is pretty powerful, and if viral’d the right way, it could get as much exposure as anything Lily Allen has to say. After all, the media love a bit of drama.

That was brilliant!! And I completely AGREE with Mr. Bull. ;)

193 Sep 28, 2009 at 13:28 by Impressed

Hey Dan, you should release this.
Very catchy, great message. I bet if you release this, “pirates” would actually go out and buy this in protest, knowing that the more sales generated the more airtime this would get for “our” cause. Just think, if we could get this to number 1……

194 Sep 28, 2009 at 14:10 by Anonymous

It may have had a good message. But that song sucked.

195 Sep 28, 2009 at 14:12 by James Holdger

Dear Lily Allen,

Remember when you pretended, Lily, that you were truly independent, Lily? Faking like you made it all alone but you were legally with Regal, part of Parlophone – oh yes. So when you lectured me, I thought I’d fileshare my thoughts on your mp3, Lily.

Now first I must sing your praises – I love your singing but I’ll just say this: I saw on your MySpace pages saying filesharing’s a new ice age, but the industry’s a recent innovation – music’s been alive, thriving since cavemen. Folk songs so long have had a place in communities that you should be amazed at it. Then one day came intellectual property, meaning if I think a thought, you can’t copy me. And if honesty’s the best policy, I’d say songs are better off without this monopoly. It’d blatantly be a major fail if they’d patented the major scale. And downloads don’t equate to sales, so taking them away won’t make me pay up – just procludes me from sending your tunes to my friends, so we all lose in the end. You lose potential fans and we lose respect for the fact that you’re desperate for cash. But what do you expect from the lass who’s collecting a fat bank cheque from the man, while her fans are collecting the glasses for minimum wage they’ll spend on her tracks?

Now please don’t be offended, Lily; I think your new CD’s splendid, Lily. Everybody’s at It and it’s Not Fair, I Could Say, The Fear was Him but He wasn’t There so let’s go Back to the Start, before 22 – all music’s in the public domain, so F*ck You.

It’s never the amateurs that’s reckon it’s damaging us, it’s the major labels saying it’s fatal; like when Napster had to pack up, wrecked by Metallica. The table’s turned now – the labels churn out a new Jezebelinternetelevangelist – and she’s fit – with a manuscript that was actually written by Mr. Michael Masnick. Can you get the irony? And by the by, Lily, I like this beat – I hope you don’t mind me thieving, ’cause even doing a cover song’s decried as stealing. But it’s alright, still, for you to plagiarise, and preach it – Don’t you believe it’s maybe time to rethink, Lily?

Put music back in the hands of the people; make the majors and amateurs equal. If anything labels strangle the freedom you claim they’re saving by banning this evil. That’s the actual reason, you see; and please don’t compare sharing to stealing – I’ve not took anything off you, I’m just spreading love for what you do. Downloaded your songs for free, then I bought my mom your CD. She likes it too, she keeps telling me, all because I pirated an mp3. Now I’ve got Matt Bellamy belling me, telling me I’m not a fan, I’m the enemy. That’s amusing, I’ve paid enough to see Muse in my time I could buy them a museum. Did you see them on that programme miming? Yeah, the pirates are killing live gigs. Maybe we should have a ban CDs appeal – then people would pay to see bands for real. Dear Lily, why are you being this silly?

Yours sincerely,
Dan Bull

P.S. – And I don’t mean any offence or anything, Lily. I just don’t think the issue’s as clear cut as you’re making out. And I know you’re going to carry on making music really. But when you’re between the devil and the deep blue sea, you need to stop worrying about pirates, and adjust your sails.

196 Sep 28, 2009 at 14:13 by MrGz0r

Great shit i hope she lesions to the song!!!!!!!

197 Sep 28, 2009 at 15:03 by Top geezah

@193

Your right, with 5-6 million “pirates” in the UK, a co-ordinated protest with each pirate buying just 1 copy each all on the same week, would rocket the tune to number 1. Giving the biggest fuck you to the music business ever!!!

198 Sep 28, 2009 at 15:10 by torrentfreakcensorsposts

So I pointed out that all the BS about ‘freedom’ I see here is just rationalizing the fact that you find it easy to steal my work (I’m a musician), and my post was *censored*!

So this is just a propaganda site, plain and simple.

I pointed out that if I were able to steal *your* work easily without much chance of getting caught, does this mean that *you* aren’t allowed to make a living?

Anyhow, I am sure the mods will protect you all from such upsetting questions.

Stealing is stealing. You aren’t just hurting rich pig label execs – there’s record stores, distributors, truck drivers, etc ad nauseum going hungry because of it. So save all your flowery BS about ‘freedom’ for someone who doesn’t know you’re just stealing other people’s work because you can.

199 Sep 28, 2009 at 15:33 by Roisin

Sony’s sales went up over 15% in 2007. In December 2007, 4.4 million jobs were cut.
Don’t be overdramatic about statistics that don’t exist. I’m a musician too, but I’m one that’s smart enough to know that music is art and not a business. Money should be earned from selling CDs in a more interactive way, independently, and through gigs. Piracy promotes the underground, it’s healthier for music.

@Torrentfreakscensorsposts

This argument is hilarious to watch. In general, I constantly see people post “Piracy is not stealing. People have a right to share their property with others” and then retards come back with “Face it, stealing is stealing. And you’re not just stealing from…”

It’s funny to watch how stupid people are.

And don’t think for a second that torrent freak’s censors are overzealous, or that they think they need to ‘protect’ us from unsettling thoughts like “stealing is stealing.” First of all, we’ve heard all that illogical bullshit before (OH NOES a swear! Guess what? I won’t get censored!) and have you ever heard of ‘neo styles’ or so-called ‘reasoned mind’?

I’m guessing the censor was a fluke, or torrent freak’s mods just wanted a laugh to see what you’d say after they censored you.

Anyway, that song was hilarious; I loved it.

While Lily Allen is freakin stupid, the people that actually buy into her shit are beyond stupid. I feel like the only explanation is that they just can’t analyze arguments right, and can’t manage enough cognitive thought to form an independent, complete opinion.

For example, Torrentfreakscensorspost is just using the argument it got from an anti-piracy propaganda ad, slightly rewritten to be even dumber. It’s already accepted the PIRACY IS STEALING!!! propaganda. It feels like it doesn’t even need to mention piracy once – mentioning stealing seems to be enough. Using ’stealing’ as a synonym for ‘piracy’, it says “stealing is stealing”

The amount of toolery evident here is astounding.

P.S. I define a ‘tool’ as one incapable of formulating their own personality or opinions, who instead borrows others’.

I also use ‘it’ rather than ‘they’ as a male-female third person pronoun. It just makes more sense.
