Arrested Pirate Party Member Becomes Tunisian State Secretary

After weeks of public protests on- and offline the Tunisian president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali resigned and escaped the country last Friday. Today, the head of the transitional government, Prime Minister Mohammed Ghannouchi, announced his new cabinet members which include a familiar name. Slim Amamou, the Pirate Party member and freedom of speech activist who was arrested just a few days ago, is now the (deputy minister) State Secretary of Youth and Sports.

tunesian pirateStarting last month thousands of Tunisian citizens joined protests on the streets against the harsh economic conditions, political repression and increasing levels of censorship by their government.

The protests reached their height a week ago, and in the process several Pirate Party members and other activists were arrested. Last Friday former president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali eventually caved in, signed his resignation and quickly fled the country.

Tunisia soon went on to form a transitional government to be led by Prime Minister Mohammed Ghannouchi. Today, several significant changes were announced, including the release of all political prisoners, political freedom and the abolishment of the Government’s information ministry.

Ghannouchi also named the members of his transitional government, which includes Slim Amamou, one of the Pirate Pary members arrested only a few days ago. Amamou is a well-known blogger and activist in Tunisia and played an important role in the ‘online’ revolt against the former government.

Amamou has been appointed as State Secretary for Sports and Youth, and his appointment is most likely the result of his good reputation in the online community, which played an important role in the revolution that unfolded in Tunisia.

On Twitter Amamou, who runs a team of software developers at his company Alixys, describes himself as “against censorship, against the intellectual property rights, for net neutrality,” all topics that are dear to Pirate Parties worldwide.

TorrentFreak has been briefly in touch with Amamou, who is understandably very excited about this appointment, and we will conduct an exclusive feature interview with him in the days to come. Meanwhile, we congratulate all the Tunisians who stood up for their rights, both on- and offline, and hope that their strength leads to a better future.

Update: There is some confusion about the State Secretary / Minister title in Tunisia. Formerly Tunisia had no State Secretary of Youth and Sports, only a minister. However, there are reports that Amamou is a junior/deputy minister rather than a full minister. As the dust settles this will hopefully be cleared up. For now we chose the safe option and opted for State Secretary. Excuse the confusion.

Wow! Congrats to Tunisia to joining the rest of the free world, and for a great new Minister. Hope he keeps up the good work.

    • BAReFOOt

What free world? I don’t know a single actually free country. Certainly not the capitalist (actually industrial feudalism) countries, and also certainly not the communist (actually dictatorship) ones.

  • Lucky :)

Can we please do this in more countries?

  • r3loaded

Don’t get too excited guys, wait and see. Either we’re seeing real change, or Tunisia’s just getting another dictatorship with various opposition members appointed to lower-level posts to appease the people.

    Still, it’s an encouraging sign.

  • Squig

He’s actually ‘only’ the State Secretary of Youth and Sports…

That’s the minister in some countries, but there is some confusion indeed, updated the article.

          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secretary_of_State

The term minister is correct either way, but he may just be a deputy, although that position didn’t exist for youth and sports in the previous government.

        • Squig

I think deputy is the better translation, in French (and German) Secretary of state holds less prestige and power than in English I think (google translate the latest netzpolitik.org article for that one!). Kinda how chancellor holds more prestige in German than English.

  • dg100

    Well done and congratulations, Tunisia!

“…the release of all political prisoners, political freedom and the abolishment of the Government’s information ministry…” – quite right too! :D

This may not be as popular as the ACS: Law story, but it is much more important, I think. Should really be the featured article. :)

    • Saga

What is ‘the Government’s information ministry’ ?

      • theCroc

The Government Information Ministry used to be in charge of web censorship. They were the ones who scoured the net in search of blogs that criticized the government and would blacklist them within Tunisia.

  • Bas

Wait… is it Minister or Secretary of State?

This is great news though. Let’s hope the country will overcome the current violence.

  • http://neuron2neuron.blogspot.com Ben Jones

The understanding we have, is that while the position name itself is “Secretary of State”, the class of position is that of a Minister, albeit a junior one. Thus both terms are correct.

We’ve put in requests to the government, and to Slim for clarification, and as soon as we get that, we will change anything inaccurate accordingly.

lets hope power doesn’t corrupt him.

So basically, they gave this guy a fake, made up title.

Haha, it’s hilarious how happy TF is, over this.

        Thanks, just what I needed!

      • SomeGuy

        Sorry, my mistake.

He wields so much power and holds such an important position as the Secretary/Minister/whatever (too bad TF doesn’t even do fact checking) of sports and youth, or whatever.

I bow before his supreme command!!!

        BAHAHAHAHA.

          SomeGuy: What’s that whooshing sound?
Marcus: That would be the concept of Tunisian democracy flying straight over your head.

  • mop

While our democracy seems to be struggling for its life and possibly dying in the near future, it’s somewhat relieving to see it being reborn in previously oppressed countries like Tunisia. Good for them, sucks for us.

    • Anonymous

@22: I agree I hope that maybe someday we will think of countries like Tunisia and think to ourselves: ‘oh that’s the country where so much of the world’s torrent sites are hosted’. Interesting times, let’s hope they actually make it through the revolution and have true reforms.

    • BAReFOOt

What democracy? Are you from the US? Then you mean your industrial feudalism with a strawman two-party fake government in front of it? Sorry, that hasn’t been a democracy for a loooong time.

What a pathetic attempt at pleasing the mobs. The sheriff is giving all the little boys assistant deputy in training merit badges and you all are clapping for them like this is some sort of victory.

If these tunisians were really looking for change, they’d kick out anyone over 30 and take rank.

  • Anon

soemthing wrong in this article, i’m tunisian and this person stated in one of his videos that he never was/is part of pirate party and that pirate party never was to exist in tunisia.
can you please explain how and why you wrote the title of this article this way ?

    • Ninja

That’s one more reason for me to be suspicious…

  • Ninja

I have mixed feelings. While my first reaction was “OMG WAY TO GO TUNISIA!” when I thought about it I was more like “wait, he was arrested and then he’s got some sort of political position? WTF?”.

I really wanna see how it develops before having anything to say. It’s both nice and suspicious till we can understand it better.

  • The Black Sheep

For Net Neutrality? Sounds bad to me. Sounds like government control of the internet, which is what is being pushed for by the US gov. Why not be for a free market?

    • TerribleTony

You clearly have no concept of Net Neutrality, either study the facts, or crawl back under your rock please.

  • nice

definitely a step in the right direction…

  • Way to go

    Dear Tunisia,

Way to go! That’s right! Stand up and fight for your country!

Titles in francophone countries often follow France’s hierarchy in government from top to bottom:

    A State Minister (Ministre d’Etat)
    A Minister (Ministre)
    A State Secretary (Secretaire d’Etat)

They can have a portfolio on anything, so it has nothing to do with the US title of State Secretary which is the Foregin Affairs Minister.

  • AnarchyNow

Who gives a shit? It’s just gonna be a dictatorship replacing the old dictatorship and the pirate party is just another proof we need an actual full-scale world revolution to get out of religion/capital/state slavery.

    • UNF

To answer your stupid and defeatist question ~ the fact that all political prisoners are being released is a positive sign the dictatorship is truly being dismantled. That this man and other dissidents were offered ministerial position indicates the extremely straitened situation in which the Regime now finds itself: i.e. fearing a realistic threat of imminent overthrow it must try to appease a multitude of aroused enemies.

All this obviously matters a great deal to the poor and oppressed masses of Tunisia, who are bravely fighting to swing the final outcome in their favour. If that can be achieved without a civil war, so much the better, but having put one tyrant to flight it looks highly unlikely they will settle for any new form of dictatorship.

You, OTOH, sound like a jaded fantasist who retreats into pie-in-the-sky dreams while condemning any advance towards freedom made in the real world, which is a very sad and twisted perspective.

Perhaps a little holiday will lift your flagging spirits? Why not try Tunisia, I have heard it is very refreshing there at this time of year “;0))

  • UNF

Let’s hope Mr Amamou now proves himself worthy of those who paid the ultimate price for his freedom, by amplifying his voice for the institution of justice.

For examples in this regard, he should carefully avert his eyes from the Pussy Pirate Parties of Europe, who wearily tag along behind whatever the NATO-Greens are crying about in any given week.

In any case, best wishes to Tunisians in achieving their full emancipation from the system of proxy-western neo-colonialist dictatorship – keep going strong, honour to the Fallen Heroes and Victory to the Revolution!

The actual head of the government is Fouad Mebazaa not Mohamed Ghannouchi:

“On the morning of January 15, Tunisian state TV announced that Ben Ali had officially resigned his position and Ghannouchi had handed power over to parliamentary speaker Fouad Mebazaa.”

What will Tunisia choose? The 21st century or the 9th? The Internet or the ‘Umma? Privacy and Freedom, or Sharia and religious oppression of women, gays, and atheists? The answer is still unclear.
