The place where breaking news, BitTorrent and copyright collide

Demonoid Domain Sale Banned Over Legal Issues

After several turbulent weeks with DDoS attacks, the shutdown of its servers and a criminal investigation into the site’s owners, trouble continues for the Demonoid BitTorrent tracker. After the site’s domain names were put up for sale last week, domain market place Sedo has now delisted them citing “legal issues.” As time progresses the hope of a comeback for what was once one of the largest BitTorrent communities continues to fade.

demonoidAfter being pulled offline by a DDoS and suspected hacker attack, nearly two weeks ago news broke that Demonoid’s servers had been shutdown in the Ukraine.

The action followed a request from Interpol, with the music group IFPI later taking credit for the takedown. While some of Demonoid’s users still expect the site to reopen with a new hosting provider, a comeback appeared less likely when the three main Demonoid domains were listed for sale last week.

Demonoid.me, Demonoid.com and Demonoid.ph were put up for sale at the popular domain name and website marketplace Sedo, but as it turned out, not for long. Two of the three domain names have now been de-listed due to legal issues.

Anyone wishing to buy the .PH or .COM domain now see the following message;

“Due to possible legal issues associated with this domain, Sedo is not able to offer services for the domain. Please consider selecting an alternative domain.”

Interestingly, the .ME domain which acted as the primary Demonoid address for more than a year, has not been de-listed by Sedo.

Banned over “legal issues”

demonoid domain

We contacted Sedo who informed us that while they take a neutral position in copyright issues, the company has an obligation to protect its users.

“In addition to processing notice-takedown complaints from third-party rights holders, Sedo also employs an internal listing suspension policy when we’re made materially aware of a domain that is either subject to ownership dispute or under investigation by relevant law enforcement,” a Sedo spokesperson told TorrentFreak.

“This is done to protect potential buyers from purchasing a domain where its use and ownership could be threatened after the purchase for unforeseen circumstances. In such situations, the listing user is informed and once they can provide documentation demonstrating the domain’s clear title, the listing will be reinstated.”

While Sedo said it “can’t go into specifics”, the company suggested that no third-party or law enforcement group had ordered the de-listing of the domains. Sedo did not respond to our question why the main .ME domain is still for sale.

At the moment TorrentFreak hasn’t heard from Demonoid as to why the domains are being sold, or what this means for the site’s future. If there is any.

Demonoid was the best site and my favourite by far, it will be missed

    • andrew long

was NOT the best site, shame to see it go i guess

      • Aspasia

So what is the best site?

        • Der

I would say Torlock, since there is NO FAKES and people that have a username get paid a dollar for finding fakes.

        • Ocupybcb

Der: Great place, thanks for sharing ;D

          just a note though:
“Indexing process is completely automated. Torlock.com does not check it.”

Of course you do, since you get rid of fakes.

I can’t believe they compensate for finding fakes btw
If I knew that, I wouldn’t waste 2 years of my life on a certain place getting rid of thousands of fakes harhar!

        • dwpbike

i dunno – torlock weak on buckethead.  i could always count on demonoid for the latest.  and never encountered a fake

        • Bor

Piratebay is also a very good alternative to demonoid.

      • FreeBSD

        true dat.

    • Mr Afghanistan

Best for sucking and virus, nothing else.
      ThePirateBay is better than Demonoid.

      • Detlo

You aint got a clue what your talking about have you, Demonoid was the best, nice layout as well and no viruses or sucking was involved, You got rare stuff and good torrents, Why comment on something you have no clue about!

        • Guest

Demonoid definitely had some rare niche stuff that I had a hard time finding other places, though, since it was rare niche stuff it usually had next to no seeders.  It’ll be missed though, I never had username since I didn’t use them all that often, but I was glad they were there when I needed them.

        • :D

I’ve been using The Pirate Bay since it launched and I have not once gotten a fake file or malware infested file.

Not sure where you base your claims?

      • Flufpuff

ThePirateBay is great for downloads – if you want a GUARANTEED virus!  Demonoid is the only one that I have trusted for years – I don’t have time to have my system slowed down by continuously virus checking/getting rid of them!

        • Guest

I’ve used TPB since the year they opened, and I’ve never gotten a virus from any torrents there.  I’m sure they happen, but generally speaking, if you check the comments section you’ll find out if the torrent is legit.  Still, demonoid had some good stuff.  I hope they come back at some point.

        • be jesus i’m feckin’ angry

          dunces get viruses from pbay

        • :D

           See my previous statement above:

You get viruses because you are downloading popular stuff with many similar torrents.  You’ve just got to wait a while and read the comments before you download.  Not to mention keep your Antivirus up and have a good computer backup ( I recommend Acronis and Avast! ).

        • Lostinrandomness

TPB will not give you viruses if you use it for tv shows and download it from known sources. They’re usually the fastest. But, maybe, if you’re looking for porn, you’re hoping for too much.

TBP doesn’t have books, though. Demonoid was THE ONLY good site for books. I’m afraid there’ll never be another :’(

      • mr. guest

wow. mr afghanistan doesn t know shit.what kinda stuff you download from TPB?Lady Gaga and Nikki Minaj and a bunch of mainstream bullshit?never got a virus from Demonoid.if yr not a dumbass, and know how to use a computer,a virus is not hard to avoid.must be cuz u were downloading gay porn from pirate bay.

        • guesst

I never got a virus from my gay porn :

        • meowmix

i had no idea who the fuck this gaga chyk was until last year. when i first heard the name i wonderd if it was a woman doing a queen tribute thing.

then… i heard the crap she calls music. *shudder*

i’ve never realy cared for the ‘comercial music’ that the music industry pushes on kids, shit, back when i was an ankle biter, punk hit the scene and i never looked back.

i stopped listening to radio 1 years ago, the last thing i activly listend to on it was mark radcliffe’s late night show and john peel (rip). now i only listen to xfm (brilliant indie station), planet rock, arrow and kerrang.

        • Qjo

The thing to remember about watching gay porn is to always either mute the volume, or wear condoms on your ears. That way you won’t get “hearing AIDS”.

      • josefene

I was with DEMONOID for years never was there a virus u idiot, where as the pirate bay had plenty

        • be jesus i’m feckin’ angry

        • meowmix

i was too, but there was the occasional virus. i had a couple or so over the years.

the last was from a portable ftp app.

        • Dakoda87

Pirate Bay is the WORST site for fakes, everyday hundreds are listed the site sucks, Demonoid was better, never incurred fakes in 3 plus years of use…..

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/66E56K4H33JHSEULCI2O2MIALM Kenneth

pirate bay is shit… it may be old school, but it sucks, too much garbage… too many fake links all over their pages as well.

        • meowmix

i’ve found some very hard to find stuff on rutracker.

        • xpmule

actualy there are few fakes and they are pounced on my admin fast !
for example every time a new episode of “Breaking Bad” is released some fake files get uploaded and the torrents are removed quickly and i think the user is banned too..
I sometimes find a fake or suspected malware release and they are usually gone by the time i can make a second comment.
And another example is i have done some cracking and patching and posted them on there and my account was disabled and my torrents were removed and i ended up having admin / mods etc look at my work and restore my account for me.

basically all torrent sites are way late in getting anything
you can always find file locker downloads way quicker than a torrent etc

i never liked Demonoids interface or the quality of the results doing  search and the filters didn’t work very well and TPB on the other hand has a very accurate search system that just works well no bs.

Demonoid may have had more ebooks or something but most unique stuff i seen there was added everywhere else anyway after the fact
i could provide examples and prove it.

I can keep going on but there is n o convincing fanboys that Demonoid was NOT the greatest place on the web. Too me it sucked crap and i rarely went there for anything.

highly over rated web site big time !

rutracker is cool and they have rules unlike Demonoid and TPB
Nothing like the barage of crap in some of the Demonoid torrent descriptions lol Some of the little noobs would stick a million dumb pictures and little sigs and avatars and all kinds of stupid crap in there.
And then compare that to uploading a Flac album to rutracker ;)
If you have done it before you know what i am saying.

Isohunt is a gay shithole and the search results are useless and the guy that runs that place is fucking condescending prick
          Go fuck yourself Gary ;)
And have fun in your shoutbox with the noobs telling you what they ate for breakfast or asking an inconceivable amount of stupid questions.
Lets not forget about the missing releases that should come up in IsoHunt but are oddly missing.. i have tested this for example with Windows iso’s years ago and recently. You go to TPB and there is 3 pages and on IsoHunt there 4 or 5 results etc..

          Bitsnoop is useful

Relying on one tracker is foolish.. i laugh at the Demonoid orphans lol

        • Imsancho55

exactly PB has been hot garbage for years

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jack-Straw/100002694451161 Jack Straw

Its a “public” .torrent site.  What do you expect?  Kind of like a general pin up board in a junior high school hallway.

      • guest507

I guess TPB has at least one advantage over Demonoid, it’s still running and not likely to be shut down.

Wow why so much hate here?  In the end we all are after the same thing.  We need to stick together and fight against the copy right trolls!!  The more trackers that are open means the harder these focks have to work to shut things down.  Also means more chances to download content and share with others.  If we unite as one instead of fighting against each other all the time think of the possibilities we could accomplish.  When we fight and argue and trash each other who do you think is smiling and laughing at us?  Let’s stick together and fight for our right to download and share creativity among each other.

      • Fat Stephen

well there were some files i could only find on demonoid, like a pro-version of the Avenue Q production (look it up, it’s one of the rarest torrents online and any that are left prolly have that demonoid txt doc). Demonoid at least had the balls to link all their torrents to their site, a trait that I think hung them in the end.

      • Guest

Whenever I use TPB, I always read the comments (if there’s any) just to be safe because there are those that upload fake/virus-infested torrents. Had a couple of “close encounters” through the years and had only been saved by the comments. But with D, never.

Well, that’s my experience with using both TPB and D. I’m not trying to change anyone’s mind or anything. Best advice is always to read the comments before downloading anything.

      • Imsancho55

yeah that is ridiculous.  Pirate Bay hasn’t been quality in like 5 years.  Demonoid and extratorrent have been the best.  Demonoid had the most music and cleanest files, extratorrent was a bit wilder, more porn and cam vids than anything else

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jack-Straw/100002694451161 Jack Straw

Are YOU KIDDING?  It was by far the BEST torrent site there ever was.  Pirate Bay is a close second.  Demonoid had a lot of rare stuff.  And it had by far the best organization of any torrent site.  Other sites should copy it.  Hopefully, Anonymous and others bring back multiple Demonoid style sites.

    • thedude321

I agree. I loved demonoid, and there was some serious rare stuff there. I used it for my books, that I needed for my research. It will be srsly missed by me at least.

I hope it comes back somehow. There really was not alternative to demonoid. :(

well, it won’t be back… if people continue to download free stuff, movie stars and artists have to make sacrifices by letting this happen. Instead of twenty cars they can only have 19… for a natural talent that they inherited. And god forbid the governemt let things like this happen… if something were to slide that they could arrest and sue people for—-welll that just can’t happen!!!! The money they can make from offenders and repeat folks who didn;t wipe their ass correctly or look at them right, well Come on!!!!

Come on man, Lars Ulrich needs that gold platted shark tank!

      • Weary Bob

It had a really good index for books with meaningful sub categories. I wish others would learn from this. With books you don’t necessarily know the title. Often you just browse under a section and try something that takes your fancy. Many sites don’t even separate ebooks from audiobooks. This is next to useless.

        • Kapaka

          YES.
The book index by categories was the feature that I liked the most.
I have discovered many authors I like by browsing a category and downloading books that caught my fancy.

    • TixatiUser

Never got a chance to use their site, never was able to make account. I have seen their tracker in some torrents. Shame to lose them.

    • Sir Wootington 3rd Esquire

This was actually upsetting.  I didn’t give a flying hoot when Megaupload was shafted but this one hurt.  Demonoid was the only site I could tell people was on par with thepiratebay.  :(

      • Imsancho55

same here, demonoid had some of the rarest music of any sites, they definitely had stuff no other sites were still uploading.  I never liked TPB but agree that viruses and fakes can be avoided unless you are going after new torrents that is. ExtraTorrent is still decent as well ass Kickasstorrents

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/66E56K4H33JHSEULCI2O2MIALM Kenneth

Could it be because its an ME domain and therefor can’t be seized by the US??? So it can be sold without the next owner loosing it to the US??? I don’t know, I’m asking…

      • mr. guest

.ph is a domain from the phillipines.the US shouldn t have been able to seize that either

      • Water is cool

.me’s registrar is located in the USA – so USA law can still seize the account and therefore seize the domain name – it’s only the extension which is owned by Montenegro which is pointless if the servers are located in the USA.

.ph’s registrar is located in the Phillipines and .ph is owned by the Phillipines – therefore, the USA has no control over that domain name.

        • totochto

Yeah – but the US is the bully with the big stick. Like here in the US, some states allow marijuana use (like Oregon), but the feds say, “Fine – smoke your weed, guees you don’t need  bridges or road repair, right?” and chop the money off.

Amazing that they cannot create mirror sites.  If the Pirate Bay could create about 100 in a day why cannot Demonoid not even create one?  Not a very resilient site!

    • Alfred Nonymous

Please read the article(s) and make sure you know what’s going on before saying dumb stuff like that, the Pirate Bay’s servers have never been seized, it was just their domain that was blocked. Demonoid can’t make a mirror site to their content because that content is simply gone, as in, they don’t have it anymore. If for some reason one day the Pirate Bay’s servers are seized they’d be gone as well (just like Megaupload: no servers means no possibility for mirrors).

Though I believe the Pirate Bay has servers placed on different locations around the world, and probably some kind of backup that is not currently actively providing online services, but can be activated if the others go down.

      • Guest

Well, there servers were seized back in 2006, but they managed to make a backup while police were in the building, something that took some balls and a lot of luck to pull off. Shame demonoid didn’t have the same redundancy though.

        • josefene

The person behind the domain names of Demonoid doesnt have the obligation to sold it via Sedo, I beleive there are other markets or trading places to sell domains.
And, I wanna add, that it’s almost stupid to try to sell such domains names trought an American company.
And i guess the people behind Demonoid, know a lot of people, have a lot of relations ( i guess) , so they dont need Sedo.

But at least, a sign of life or any news from the admins would be appreciated.

Torlock? Did someone actually post that as a better site then Demonoid. I guess if ur looking for a fresh copy of WinXP maybe. Demonoid was not a 0-Second site like TL or others but at least it had fresh as well as rare content. In 5 years I never downloaded anything from that site that was “fraudulent” an any fashion.

    • Animegeek52

Demonoid was great for rara stuff, they always had almost anything I was looking for that couldn’t be found elsewhere. I agree Torlock doesn’t compare.

  • Monster

As far as non private trackers go Demonoid was the best & if you were looking for something and couldn’t find it there it was safe to say it wasn’t on the webz.

I only used demonoid a few times a year but I will miss them. :(

  • foff

Fuck what a loss.  Demonoid was one of my go to sites for collections now it will be harder to find them until I find another good site.  Google fucks are not making it any easier to find a site either.   Something will eventually rise to take the place of demoniod.  However a few comments from the owner of demoniod would be nice even if it was only to say good bye.  Why the fuck can’t he at least post a thank-you and good bye to all the users of the site?  I am sure he could find a way after all he knows how to set up and run a website.

    • Positron

The way I see it, the reason the site’s admin (by the name of ‘Umlauf’) hasn’t said “good-bye” to anyone, is because he’s not planning on abandoning Demonoid, yet. The last that was heard from him was on August 2, when he told TF “that the redirection [of the domain] was put in place to avoid mounting bandwidth bills caused by the DDoS.” And let’s not forget what he told TF on July 27, when he said: “I’ll fix the site as soon as possible, but it might be a while this time.”

So, let’s not jump to any conclusions here and just grant the guy some time to get things in order again. And by that I also mean the real life issues which, as he told TF, take priority over the problems concerning Demonoid.

As for there being backups of the site, I don’t see any logical reason for there not to be. Making such backups is usually an automated process taking up only very few resources, and given the site’s history with several attacks, technical problems, financial problems, as well as hosting problems, it seems highly unlikely that there wouldn’t have been a functioning backup protocol in place for the entire site and tracker.

Also, I wouldn’t be surprised if the site’s admin decided to bring the site back up by launching the beta version, as that would be quite an appropriate moment to do so, I think.

Anyway, my thanks goes out to the ‘Noid’s admin and anyone else on their staff trying to bring the site back for all of us, and for those who have yet to become part of the awesome community that is Demonoid. Thank you so much and good luck with everything! See you soon.

      • http://spencerthayer.tumblr.com Spencer “Thunderball” Thayer

I agree. Demonoid has been down before and it wont go away.

      • Guest

I fear that the most likely explanation for why Umlauf hasn’t been heard from for over two weeks is that they don’t have computers hooked up to the Internet for prisoners in Mexican jails.

  • wombleranger

I have to agree that demonoid had no equal. It was my main site for last 2 years and never got viruses or malware from them. I hope that they re-surface sometime because
tpb has way too many fakes and selection sucks!!!!

  • renob

heh. Everyone nut-hugging Demonoid.  That place was nothing amazing. Sure there was stuff listed there not on other sites but did that rare stuff have any seeds?  For me, no. The site would list a dozen seeds but when you get the torrent how many seeds were there really? ZERO. It was useless. It also had a sizable crowd of self righteous twerps that thought their shit didn’t stink just because they were a member on Demonoid; like it was an exclusive VIP invitation only access site.  Whatever.  Anyway. I’m not wishing any harm on the owners – I really do hope the legal actions are the lightest possible.

    • LETMEBECLEAR

WRONG!!!!,  you clearly don’t like old school FUNK, SOUL, JAZZ,  if you did you wold have not posted your comment!!!  THE D was THE best place for those types of music.

      • Sad

Yep, I am with you on that. Whether it was rock, ska, prog, someone on Demonoid would come up with the goods.
Stuff that will never see the light of day on CD, that was what Demonoid would give you – so much more important than being able to get the latest Lady Gaga shite for free.

        • Diabolikal

I would also like to add that it had one of the BEST collective archives of music since the days of Oink. I was lucky enough to be able to be apart of the community quickly after Oink went bye bye. I can say that it opened my eyes to media I would have never checked out before. Hopefully some of you guys are right. Maybe there is a backup and maybe there is a plan to bring back a beta. Until then i’m searching through multiple sites trying to piece together the functionality and vibe of just one. On a side note I have to search through 6 or 7 now. And all i’m looking for is good underground hip hop and funk. Sucks.

    • mr.guest

Demonoid was simply the best tracker for mainstream/obscure everything.it was always much better seeded than any of the real public trackers..if something wasn t being seeded, did u ever think of sending the uploader a PM?BTW,when i joined Demonoid years back,it was invite only

p.s. keep nuthugging all those “well seeded”  ”public” torrents

    • Likecakes

You clearly have no idea what you are talking about. Firstly, the site NEVER listed stuff that didnt have seeds, one of my minor complaints actually because then you had to do a double search to include stuff that wasnt seeded. Secondly, if it didnt have seeds the best thing about the site was the community. There was an option to PM the uploader and 90% of them were helpful in reseeding.

Now take that with my Private sites that IM a member of and everyone has Anonymous upload or despite that things can be seeded for quite a long time on private sites because they use Seedboxes. Well, eventually if it’s not generalist enough it will die and be unseeded. Factor in also the fact that one needs multiple private sites to even touch the variety that demonoid offered. So yea, kick rocks be.

    • Imsancho55

you don’t know what you are talking about, you are just pissy because you didn’t get an invite, coulda just asked someone, I found demonoid users to be great they would re-seed old dead torrents when asked nicely, had that happen several times for me, they just don’t like leeching dbags

    • fiuwh9c8nrmfxn

i can’t say anything about demonoid (though i think the idea of private torrent membership is pretty useless), but Rutracker could easily be on par. torrents there never seem to be dead, and there’s a lot of obscure content.

      buuuut………
when it comes to music, NOTHING is better than soulseek.

  • Tne

by the way… if any of you have rare stuff that did have seeds and you still have the torrent for it just remove the demonoid tracker and upload to it another site.  spread the love.  keeping shit exclusive is stupid.

    • Jasonkills32

Im sure but if your like me i always saved all my torrent files for demonoid and a lot of them still work from the other sources still listed from them. The issue is safety for downloading i dont feel that there is any really safe site out there any more that the noid is gone

    • 89ndytct89hxwi

       yes.

think about how often you see a TXT file titled “torrent downloaded from demonoid”.

i understand the goal in private communities, but it’s really flawed considering how easy it is to copy a torrent file. the privacy is instantly erased.

  • Asdlkjfa

Dont let the site die, get the source, let’s put it back up.

  • anon

I never used demonoid, did not believe in having to sign up to get a torrent or search for one. I always used isohunt. What a great search engine that one is, hosts torrents and also grabs links to torrents from a wide rage of other sources.

i’ve moved to kick ass torrents for everything but books..managed to find a nice download spot for ebooks…..i don’t really want to link it on torrentfreak since that’s the kiss of death for a site but i bet if you googled for a Spot to find Free Books, it would come up.

Only downside is that the lockers they use make you wait like 15 minutes in between downloads, but they’ve got everything i’ve looked for.

    • dwpbike

i like kat, too.  but the music section is as weak as tpb

    • Likecake

I think KickAssTorrents and Extratorrent will have to take the crown. I’ve been using both for a while but just recently made accounts. However KAT needs better organization and categories. Maybe also a better/less in your face layout.

  • O_0

I find it odd that a copy of the source hasn’t shown up online somewhere. With all the issues they had in the past I figured they would keep copies readily available just in case this sort of thing were to happen. I believe demonoid stored magnet links along with the torrent files. I would imagine the magnets would easily be copied from a sql database and end up in a backup somewhere.

  • townie2

so Demonoid is guilty until proven innocent. they have never been charged with a crime, but may be in the future? EVERYONE in the World MAY be charged with a crime in the future, if we followed that logic, the World would come to a standstill ffs.
    idiots.

    • Dj942001

no one is innocent until proven guilty, don’t believe me? I have gotten arrested before because someone said I did something, not because I did it but because they told the cops I did, that resulted in me going to jail and them saying ” hey pay us $5000 and we will let you out other wise you stay in jail till court” how is that innocent? so im innocent in jail and if I don’t have the money to get out immediately I lose my job my house and through that my life? (since bills cant be paid while sitting in jail). yea I say fuck american law, only way demonoid’s gonna get past this is pay out the ass, I wish em the best but money is what speaks to court

  • Hak

Most of the people who say that Demonoid was not that great are clueless and jealous that they didn’t have an account. It had great stuff that other places stole, had a great layout and comment section where there was discussion and talk on the item from people who care to write more than 2 words,

told us problems and gave their impression and opinion. ….at most of the other sites most of the people are just interested in grabbing stuff and running.

I used it mostly for learning material and it was amazing…i not a 14 year old hunting for the latest game mods or the latest Billboard top 5 release

most of the people who dont like it, or got banned were most likely 14-19  were probably load and run users. Not sure why people though you have to have and account or log in to downdoad and item…it depend on how new the item was.

    I hope someone buys it

    • :(

Agreed, I do hope the sight comes back but if you look at what happened to the owners of torrent spy I don’t think it is very likely.

Demonoid has set the standard in the torrent community ! We can only learn and get stronger,Napster,Lime Wire..at one song a minute to Demonoid to a whole library of songs in a minute….TO ? every song ever written down loaded in a minute ..or your whole Public library of books and music downloaded in 2 minutes ? I you think this is going to stop or slow down you are smoking the big bong !! and thanks to the guy who suggested TrueCrypt for my external hard drive WOW ! amazing it is totally invisible…WOW ! LMAO damn I just entered demoined.me only to find it wasnt responding. I was like “HUH??” so I googled demonoid and it brings me to this post (like many of you reading this Im sure).

This is nothing short of a damn bloody shame. I only used demonoid on avergae once or twice per month, but Ive been a member since 2005 and honestly it’s always been the best torrent site hands down. Admitedly Ive used the piratebay more times, but that was usually for movies or other generally popular/easy to get shit. Demonoid had all the real gems… Sure hope it returns, same soul, new body. RIP.

    • skopas

Amen ….Jimmyb.   The Demon was the best.

  • Demion

Demonoid is and was a Diamond.

People freely sharing at its best.

There was unbelievable good material to improve yourself and other lives.

Lets hope people join and put the pieces together again.

    • Sirparadigm101

‘People freely sharing at its best.’ I think that puts it beautifully. I am stunned at the loss of Demonoid, stunned that the
International Federation of the Phonographic Industry [the US of A] can smash into another country. Truly the whole thing is horrible and makes me think the guys at Anonymous aren’t paranoid but correct. To all of you guys who shared so much, be it rare funk, punk or whatever thanks we had a golden few years.

  • skopas

Demonoid was part of the great internet pre-torrent spread.   Back in 2004 if you can remember, the Demon was probably one of 10 sites that was spreading the new torrent technology.  I was still in awe in how it could be possible to happen.  I filled up hard drive’s with torrent goodies faster than you can say chile without water.  Those were the days …..I for sure will miss Demonoid.  Thank you for the memories it was a great time…..RIP.

    • Dj942001

yea I was a member since 2006 I came from Limewire when noticed it going to crap with viruses and fake downloads so I started looking for a different site then a friend on xbox live that had a website like me, teaching about halo mods gave me an invite and I was amazed at how much stuff they had and no viruses or fake stuff

  • Vischia

Sorry…saw this story on Vice:  http://bit.ly/NzKPFc  but, after seeing the domains for sale, has to wonder who’s telling the truth.

    • Fantastic

that was talked about earlier when it was first mentioned of the sale and it was said that it all BS in the first place. And so far the Server Host company says they didn’t actually get raided so I’m still going with their word vs unnamed sources.

  • Miami Sunset

I think The Pirate Bay should buy the domains. I can’t think of anyone else wanting them since they come with so much baggage.

  • Michel

Demonoid had the best layout, by far, of any of the major torrent sites. I got love for the bay but the look of it is just so unfriendly and makes it hard to wade through all the crap to find that special gem. I hope another site rises in its place and adopts the “style” of demonoid because it really filled a niche in the interwebs

  • Jaytheist

glad i dumped demonoid for IPTorrents years ago. Buh bye demonoid

    • Rascalina

wow IPTorrent is invite only. I wonder if I could find someone to send me an invite.

  • Pontymann

My guess is it was the same hired guns who hit Megaupload.com,  The RIAA seem to use hackers to dump massive amounts of bad links onto a target to crash it and then use that as justification to call in he cops and shut it down.

  • Pyrod101

Perhaps it would be best to consider some solutions to this problem rather than lament the loss of Demonoid. After all, I’m sure that we could find ways to create a second demonoid out of an existing site. It might not be easy and it may not be as awesome as demonoid but it would be better than nothing, right?

Demonoid was the best torrent site, ever. They had rare stuff and it was difficult to see a torrent go dead there. I do miss them, It was the site I went to look for special things.
I still hope they come back. This year was pretty bad, first BTjunkie and now Demonoid.

Funny thing is that I am still seeding Demonoid torrents. Specially some rare books.

  • Falconet

    Kickasstorrents is good.

regardless of what has been said, i assume the entertainment industries and their subsidiaries are trying to do similar to what they have tried to do to Mega, ie, keep as much stuff as possible, add as much stuff as possible then prevent anyone from Demonoid from looking at what is on the HDDs to see what was there and what wasn’t. you can bet that the orders have come from someone high up, maybe yet again from the US government. they dont seem to learn, do they! i can see another monumental fuck up on the horizon!

  • Whitehash85

Sucks its gone, if there was something I was looking for it, it would be there, and be virus-free, most other torrent sites have f all, say what you want, but Demonoid had it all. Its too bad file sharing isn’t allowed anymore, I guess if I give something to a friend or 100 friends, I guess its against the law, and greedy ass celebrities need every last friggin’ penny the can suck out of us.

    • Aotbnlef

Do you have any idea how much coacaine and hookers cost these days?

Of course they need to be greedy fucks.

  • Pirate

The IFPI can suck big a fat one messing up our good ratios, Demonoid was the best.
But there are still good torrent sites on the web. These inbreds will never win against piracy.

  • Mett

what about those kind of sites running on non-ICANN network?
Like ppl who want to check those kind of sites change their dns records with a dns which would provide access to this non-ICANN network + regular ICANN network.
Some kind of opendns I mean.

  • Dj942001

So….I got a question for whoever knows, how is it that piratebay is still kicking when I saw them in the news like last year being sued for millions?, seems like all they did was gave some money for the fines and people left them alone, thepiratebay basically is the most well known torrent site on the net, demonoid was less known. can anyone explain this to me?

  • SupportBs

i miss demonoid – but it was the users who made the sight- get them ll in one place and u have demonoid again:)

    • SupportBs

      sorry i mean “site”

  • Let Them Eat Cake!

But what of my beautiful ratio! I was a goddess, damnit. I can’t stand TPB. They’re user interface doesn’t even compare to what Demonoid had. It had an unspoken honor among pirates guideline and people generally upheld to it. Sure some people failed to properly label torrents, but for the most part I found everything I needed and with ease. Granted TPB has helped me in my time of need on more than one occasion, however, it was never as dependable as Demonoid. [exasperated sigh]

It’s a sad time to be a pirate.

Guess I’ll go gander at Torlock.

  • CHRONiC

Wow why so much hate here?  In the end we all are after the same thing.  We need to stick together and fight against the copy right trolls!!  The more trackers that are open means the harder these focks have to work to shut things down.  Also means more chances to download content and share with others.  If we unite as one instead of fighting against each other all the time think of the possibilities we could accomplish.  When we fight and argue and trash each other who do you think is smiling and laughing at us?  Let’s stick together and fight for our right to download and share creativity among each other.

  • meowmix

what i didn’t get about it was this: how could they sell a domain if it’s payed for period of time isn’t up? wouldn’t selling it be illegal and tantamount to theft due to it already being owned/paid for, even if for legal reasons the owners where being fucked over by the man?

    • Guest

It’s not stealing if the music industry does it.  That’s what lots of charitable contributions in the right places can buy you.

  • Terraplane_Blues

I hope the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry dies slowly and painfully and it’s body left out to rot. Figuratively speaking of course.

  • Johnsmith

Shouldn’t the USA look at the illegal tactics of IFPI who are doing a DDOS attack?

Guess they music guys at the IFPI are making the daily fundraising contributions the the right Politicians.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Richard-Miller/1047023623 Richard Miller

Yeahp,  more disturbing news, of course they haven’t launched an investigation, it’s MAFIAA doing it!!  Lol..  Sorry, not trying to troll or act dumb, but anybody with a brain will realize the pattern here.  Legal concern? Nothing being done or said about this so-called DDoS, I smell foul play. Eventually there won’t be ANY torrent sites left, =(. Mininova and TPB might be the next to go.

    • meowmix

of course they’re not doing an investigation, for two reasons, 1stly no one grasses on the mafia and lives to tell it, and 2ndly, if the did, somone in the maffia may put a horses head in whoever is running the investigations bed.

I think there is a bit of contrary info getting out there.. first we heard that the admin was putting the domains up for sale (at the say of the site owner)? Next we hear that the delisted domains are in the custody/control of “authorities” and that any registrar who tries to register them in the pending criminal investigation could be charged as well?!? HUH? This seems to be an escalation in the war on pirates.. under previous international law this could not be done without the epxress permission of both countries and a syncronicity of law.. and apparently this is getting to this level.. something TPB has dodged for quite some time.. Does this have something to do with the citizenship of the site owner and/or admins, or the place of last registry.. I’m confused… With time, this confusion should clear up..

  • koolkat

Demonoid should have used magnet links like the Pirate Bay. Then Demonoid could
come back very easily.  Also I wouldn’t be surprised if  the MPAA and RIAA hired
    hackers to DDoS Demonoid !!

    • anon

Demonoid were always silent about things. I never liked that but I did like the site. If you go to Suprbay there is always some posting about the actions taken against them and their reaction. Being mixed race (which Demonoid sussed out) I had one member called “Driving Miss Daisy” leaving comments but being a cynical type I always believed that it was either admin or an eastern european person telling me that they had never had african slaves like the USA and unlike Europe never marched into Africa to take millions of coloreds into a life of slavery.  In that respect they are right – Ukraine, Russia and many other countries in that region didn’t join in the wholesale enslavement of people based on their color. I did think sometimes they thought that members from the USA or UK were there file-sahring as some sort of internal protest. Sometimes that was the case and other times not. Was it a “game of thrones” with Demonoid – yeah maybe a little bit but who here can put their hand up and say that there isn’t an element of that in what they do. You are immersed into the culture of your country. As a final note here’s something that a lot of colored and white people don’t realise about mixed-race people. My white grand-parents were always happy to see me when I was a child as were my colored grand-parents – since we are a product of our chidhood experiences this means that I’m always happy to see everyone regardless of color. Now thats a real problem when I meet a white supremacist who wants to put me in a gas chamber – I just can’t help but be happy to see them. Now thats a real headache! lol

Demonoid was nice because it was a community with rules and accountability.  12 year olds don`t get that.  I have two young children: I used demonoid to pick up cartoons from my childhood to watch with them.  The diversity of torrents on demonoid was amazing.  I breathed life into 20 year old macs with torrents off the site.  Downloaded the missing manuals to robotics kits I picked up at yard sales.

    It’s a fucking shame.

    • Ultima

The thing that made Demonoid great was it’s catagorizations and search
it was easy to find what you wanted or get a list of say audio books.
Most other sites just dont have this granualar detail.
while Demonoid will be missed another site doing a good job of sorting, catagorizing and searching but maining the catagorizing could easily come to the for front.

  • Risingfromtheashes

well I would suggest watching what you post because rutracker is now having similar issues to demondoid.  I had not heard of rutracker until I read it here and upon looking it up this is what I found:  RUTracker, Russia’s largest BitTorrent tracker, has been dealing with a hacker attack over the past few hours.
According to Cnews the attack began this morning Moscow time.

  • Trick_1958

WAHHHHHHHHHHHH I want my Demonoid back

Only idots get virus’s from any torrent site. Most of these pirate outdated protection anyway, use chity wok facebook games. Click yes to anything they read. Go for banner “Download Now” links so tbh their insults on TPB btw the largest. Most attacked and still alive tracker to date really should not ruffell peoples feathers. Demonoid got shit years ago and did not take smart or prudent action to avoid being taken down. After torrentspy sadly left us the best spider engine is torrentz. After SCT went down the greatest torrent site is Torrentday. After Empornium its now Deviloid. If there is a demand for a service some brighter then the dude who just got wiped out will fill the gap.

But anyone who gets a Virus in 2012.. From anything on the internet. Is a total fucktard. They probally use Nortan or Mcafee cry cus things dont work as they shld. Their words on the internet should be taken like the grain of salt in the oceon we live in. Idiots….

I’m stopping my torrent uploading until I find out whats happened to the seized Demonoid servers. For anyone who was just downloading its not a problem but for those of us that loved to swap stuff on a regular basis with other members it is. I was a Demonoid member for years so that means there’s a cyber-trail a mile long and as a first time uploader that puts the spotlight in my direction. Shutting down my client for a few months. I don’t think anything will happen but its best to sit back for a while and see. Thats just my view and other Demonoid uploaders may disagree. While I’m here I’d like to thank Demonoid and especially the vinyl rippers for a great time sharing my interests, hobbies and the very cool “let’s bring the world together” atttitude. The vinyl rippers get a special mention because after the thousandth upload of Titanic (you soppy bunch. lol) it was nice to see some rare (as in never issued on CD or digital download) blues, rock and jazz.

SAD DAY FOR MANKIND. Demonoid was not only my favorite torrent website, but it’s been my favorite website for a long time. I have grown into a better person because of it’s wide range of self-help audiobooks. Thank you so much to the owners that helped to keep it going. The D will always be in my heart and mind. <3

I first switched to Demonoid as my “primary” tracker site when SuprNova shut down, if that tells you anything about how long I’ve depended on Demonoid. Just like I was in 06-07 when the site shut down, I am suuuuper bummed right now.

Don’t nobody tell me Demonoid was “nothing special”, cuz for me it was a trusted and valued resource for almost a decade.

Demonoid was the best, a great resource, good members. Lots of interesting stuff.
Nothing comes close to this site.
It was a private/public tracker with class, and policed by it’s users.
It will be Very sadly missed. (I’m hopeful of it’s return)
It’s a shame i didn’t get to see it one last time, as i was away.

    demonoid should be back online

Demonoid was a lot better than most out there.  I believe that’s the reason they were targeted.  If others were as significant, wouldn’t they be going down too?

  • cinister

does anyone suggest a similar site to download ebooks. I’ve tried a few others but have gotten zip files which then say i need to go to another site for a password and then its bogus! I soooo miss demonoid!!!

    • Hockeybuff

I’m an ebook and music lover extraordinaire and Demonoid was by far the best IMHO.  I really, really hope they resurface!!

  • MadCM

demonoid is old school… end of story… hope they’ll find a way to solve this mess

What’s the point of all these measures against torrent sites. Sure, ‘everybody knows’ like Leonard Cohen would state, that was these torrent sites are doing is illegal. However, as long there is HUGE demand, taking one site down will only spread the users to other torrent sites. As far as financial problems of Demonoid go: the site may have enormous bandwide and backup costs, it also had a fair share of advertisement revenues. What about the advertisers who advertise on these torrent sites? Should they not have to be brought to justice as well, because after all they promote on torrentsites. But hey, hypocritically they will probably argue they have nothing to do with it. Shame Demonoid is gone for now… but hey, there are at least a couple of hundred to choose from next.
