Demonoid Shuts Down Again
Written by Ernesto on November 09, 2007Demonoid.com, one of the most popular BitTorrent trackers, was forced to go offline again because the Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA) threatened their ISP.
It’s been just over 6 weeks since the CRIA allegedly shut down the Demonoid BitTorrent tracker. Details were scarce at the time, with lots of people simply claiming the site had some technical or server issues. Indeed, TorrentFreak came in for quite some criticism when we claimed the CRIA was involved, but when the site returned there were some ominous signs which seemed to support our claims.
Eventually, the Demonoid trackers reappeared, followed by the site itself but was forced to block Canadian visitors by the CRIA. However, despite blocking Canadians, it seems the CRIA hasn’t yet had enough of harassing Demonoid and its host.
On Demonoid.com we now read:
“The CRIA threatened the company renting the servers to us, and because of this it is not possible to keep the site online. Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for your understanding.”
Indeed, Demonoid’s host had previously said that if it had any major hassle, it was likely it could pull the plug on the site.
A message on the Demonoid IRC channel says: “Site is down, tracker is up. Expect the site to return, unless we hear otherwise from Deimos.”
Canada seems to becoming more unfriendly for BitTorrent sites - Demonoid aren’t the only ones being threatened by the recording labels there.

I got that messages an hour after downloading a torrent file from the site. Well so far their tracker is still working. I hope they’ll be back soon.

I live in Canada and have been using a proxy and that was annoying, but to loose another one of the best sites out there for good is a tragedy.I dont know what to do or wear to start but there has to be something we can do ?(realistically and non-violent of course)

There may be a gazillion torrent sites (all of varying quality), but Demonoid was the best because of it’s community. Also, all the helpful & insightful feedback/comments on the quality of the torrents posted for all to see, great torrents & really a wide selection of shared stuff, and really some the friendliest & most generous people i’ve come across online.
If this is permanent, they WILL be missed.
I think i’m gonna go watch Fight Club now…hmph.

I might be wrong. I just tried to think realisticly. What the hell should we do ? I think Deimos should move the servers to some other country…. because if it stays in Canada.. Demonoid won’t last for long IMO.

Exactly, well said,There is more at stake then just another site or another tracker, it’s the whole net! We cant let them start dictating weather or not we can share with friends/on-line community, or we are gunna end up with a controlled environment on the net, i never protested in the seventy’s, I wasnt even alive,lol, but they did know how to stand up and protest things,what is so different know? aside from the fact that the media/Governments/corporations have most people dumbed down into thinking they cant make a difference

I’m a regular visitor of Demonoid and I am sad to see it is offline again. I hope to see this site come back soon as I enjoy visiting this forum and that it is unfair to see it go now when it has only return for less than 2 months since it went offline. The thing what we could do (many p2p users asking) is to collect enough people, who are interested in filesharing, create serverbase in africa (mosambik or something like that), open OWN network/lines/operators etc everything what internet providers do, reopen critical sites there, and enjoy freedom of filesharing! The guestion is not about money, it is about PEOPLE who want to do that!

You might want to know that it’s a representative of the RIAA in Canada and you should know how ruthless the RIAA is when they go after people. I’m no Demonoid fan and I’m also not an employee of the MPAA or the RIAA. Demonoid is a great sight. Think for all those great unreleased music / books files that were shared… They were non-existent because those in power that be, decided that it wasn’t marketable anymore. I’m writing from a poor nation,right now u believe it or not,I’m running a electronic library for the slum children &adult,they read watch things around the world through my p3 computers,most of the materials downloaded from demonoid,reasons,1)I can not afford to buy the so called legal stuff,2)most of the stuff on the stand is mainstream popular shit 3)In general after the globalisation pricing is same around the world,an american or European consumer is not equal to an african or asian consumer but we’ve forced to buy to the standards of rich.
So,demonoid is not a site of promoting piracy rather it’s a place where the knowledge is imparted without disparity(at least in our case).please,people who live in rich nation like Canada or usa… promote torrent sites and don’t support people like CRIA.

November 9, 2007 Press Release: Pirates Responsible for Estimated %40 Profit Drop in 2007.
October 24, 2007 Press Release: British and Dutch police raids shut down the world’s largest pre-release pirate music site.
FRIAA recently scored a landmark victory against piracy when a Minnesota court ordered Jammie Thomas, a single mother of two, to pay $220,000 to six record labels as a result of her illicit file sharing activities. FRIAA has learned that Mrs. Thomas was illegally sharing more that 1,700 songs from her home computer, and thus her required restitution works out to $129 per song1. We hope that Mrs. Thomas has learned her lesson, but if she continues to steal music, we trust that she will choose to do so on the Internets, as fines for theft of physical merchandise would certainly be lower. We are delighted to receive monthly payments of $750 from Mrs. Thomas for the next 24 years2. Booyah!
Partnering with CRIA, our counterpart in the 51st state, we nearly procured legal action against DemonOdd, a veritable haven of illegal computer pirates, and succeeded in having the site blocked for Canadian viewers. Now who’s saying “eh”, eh?
FRIAA in Action
A die-hard advocate of anti-piracy efforts, FRIAA recently unveiled its “Talk Like a Normal Person Day” campaign, in order to combat the “Talk Like a Pirate Day” which has become increasingly popular with the 13 - 22 year old age bracket. The campaign boasted a record number of participants on September 20th.
FRIAA also lobbies in Washington to end piracy both at home and abroad, and recently sponsored a “Buccaneers Are Bad” rally.
In response to boycotts of related industry groups, FRIAA is sponsoring a boycott of the positive portrayal of pirate activity in popular media, and is currently seeking a court injunction against production of any further sequels in the popular “Pirates of the Caribbean” film series.
FRIAA is also taking on computer piracy, and has won numerous victories over popular “tor ant” websites, commonly used for trading illicit computer copies of computer copies of computer things.

Keep in mind the “Hydra” was beginning… whats to say that Demonoid won’t be the next to suddenly appear on this “Hydra” within due time. As good as this may sound it’s only going to bring more problems in the future. The Pirate Bay may seem like they are doing something good to change the future… but lets face it, their are too many factors in their plans that could cause the entire P2P community to fall.

Well, here’s the dilema.
Since we don’t have the money to fight big government, there’s really only two options left.
Option 1. Don’t purchase media/software. To institute a protest, we’d basically have to not purchase any sort of media / software. Only problem with this, is of course, none of us are currently paying for any of it anyway. So there goes option 1.
Option 2. Pacifist Protesting. Like ole’ M. Ghandi we can all try to get together, and do some activist type shit. Maybe we could organize a protest at the RIAA Headquarters in NY. That’d atleast get us on National / Canadian TV (probably world wide). Then we could get attention and POSSIBLY start a movement.
Backdoor Option 3. We could use our connections to all of our hax0r buddies and insitute a denial of service on all of RIAA owned “Pay for Media” sites like Itunes/Napster/etc.
They takedown Demonoid, we takedown one of your sites. Denial of Service and Distributed Denial of Service has a track record of working in this area.

It has (at this time) NO legal implication, when the CRIA tried to sue uploaders a few years ago they failed miserably to even get the names from the ISPs. Deimos should have made a stand back then and set up a backup somewhere else just in case.
Let’s hope he’ll move to a new location soon and stops twitching every time someone sends him a letter.

I hear that in Sweden p2p sharing is legal. All they would need to do is move the site to a hosting company in Swedish territory or any other territory where p2p is legal.
Hope they kept daily backups… and to see a solution brought forth and put into action soon.
