Demonoid: There’s Still Hope, But We’re Not Coming Back Soon

A few days ago Demonoid showed the first signs of life in weeks when the domain’s nameservers were updated. Unfortunately, this doesn’t mean that the site is preparing to make a comeback. The site’s tech admin informs TorrentFreak that the Demonoid crew is “not looking into putting the site back up at the moment.” However, the troubled BitTorrent site is not giving up entirely just yet.

demonoidAfter the popular BitTorrent tracker Demonoid suffered a DDoS and hacker attack last month, the site’s servers in Ukraine were pulled offline.

Local authorities explained that Interpol asked them to take action as part of an investigation into the site’s alleged owners in Mexico.

In the weeks that followed the Demonoid team remained silent. All this time the site itself showed absolutely no sign of life. However, a few days ago something changed.

All of a sudden Demonoid.me’s nameservers switched from demonoid.com to demonoid.me. Could it be that the site was preparing to make a comeback?

We decided to ask the tech admin of the site, who hadn’t responded to our inquiries for a few weeks. This time he was quick to reply, explaining that the DNS change was made to fix issues with the mail server.

“The DNS change was so the mail started working again,” Demonoid’s tech admin told TorrentFreak.

When we asked the admin to shed a light on the future of the popular BitTorrent site we were told that there is “nothing interesting to report yet.”

“I hope there will be one day, but it might not be soon,” the tech admin added.

Demonoid will remain down for the time being and there are no plans to bring it back anytime soon. “We are down, and we’re not looking into putting the site back up at the moment,” the admin said.

In other words, Demonoid might return at some point in the future, but it’s more likely that this will take months, rather than days.

In many ways the current situation is reminiscent of the downtime Demonoid suffered half a decade ago. During the summer of 2007 the site shut down its servers after receiving legal threats from the CRIA. After being offline for six months the site eventually reappeared in full glory early 2008.

Time will tell whether Demonoid can make a comeback once again.

I too hope our beloved Demonoid returns all fresh and free from any problems, and that it wont take them 6 months again.

Wouldn’t it be GREAT if they came fully back online in time for Xmas?
What a terrific present that would be for all of us.

      • Whatever

The first thing that needs to be done if it comes online is to copy as much of the site as possible as a backup/ressurection copy. Hope that someone knows how to go about doing such a thing. Or maybe demonoid should start a mirror action something that has been done before.

The ironic (and annoying) thing about all of this is that all the “popular” MAFIAA media isn’t what is missing on the internet now. It’s actually the more rare things that are unavailable. They MAFIAA probably didn’t even stop one MAFIAA related download.

Anyway, also hope it returns very soon.

        • Elkinsj210

Agreed, one course of action which I believe may have originated with TPB would be to create a torrent of all of your torrents thus having a compact file serving as the back up, although if the files are only hosted through demonoids tracker then that may cause a problem.

How is it possible that they haven’t made a torrent containing all the torrents in the website? Isn’t that the least you can do to defend yourself against these situations?

      • Aa

Not all torrents there had DHT allowed. No idea how much of them, but most likely they would be unusable since the tracker’s down…
        …I think.

    • Robotsex

If and when it comes back I hope they change their policy to strictly private to help avoid problems like this in the future and help regulate who can post and view torrents on the site. Maybe in this way they can help keep prying eyes at bay.

    • Mike

Sites are static, and therefore can be shut down.

      – The solution is for new torrent utilities in which “sites” is built in to the software. (Then there’s no way to “shut down” a “site”.)

Since everything trades DHT/magnet-link now, you don’t even need a site tracker anyway.

    • Isus

come back demonid… I cant live without you

    • AnotherHuman

I hope it comes back too. Correct me if I’m wrong. But demonoid just provides hosting for torrent files. They don’t host the actual files (books/movies/audio) them selves. Nor do they create the torrent files them selves. They are not solely responsible for the files people share? If that’s the case then surely demonoid are not infringing on copyright? So going on that premiss, its the people sharing the files. But as torrents take partial amounts of data from different sources. Then surely the people concerned about there copyright being violated. Must find all the sources the down/up loader has come from? This of course a massive job. If i,m right about this then there is no legal right to stop sites such as demonoid? Plus the way copyright works. Its classed as a negative right, what that means is you can only stop copyright infringement. There for you have to stop the unloaders/downloaders? On a case by case basis? This is of course if I am right about the above. My personal opinion is when ever I have seen a “free” film or book or song, and i like it I went out and bought it anyways. I personally am fed up with tons of shit Hollywood churns out and glad I don’t spend £10 per film to see it at the cinema to see the same story repeated and done badly again. Maybe Hollywood should raise there game so we want to spend money to get the originals again? what do you think chaps?

      • Funkmeister88

The issue here is not “Is there a legal way to shut them down?” Nor is it solely “Copyright Infringement”, altho piracy no doubt has made the crappy movies Hollywood churns out these days a little bit less lucrative. What you’re seeing is power being exercised, and the Hollywood bully being paranoid and the US Government backing them up. I believe in supporting artists who create real art. I go to see them, buy their books, music, etc. The other crap is entertainment and usually not worth the money…and if you don’t like the product, you can’t return it…OR get back the time you wasted on it. I hope Demonoid comes back. I love them, and I support them, and I will give them more money to help them. I have bought music I like in many ways over the years…vinyl, CD, cassette… So why do I need to pay for some of it yet again? Why is it legal for me to take a CD I own and make an MP3 from it for my iPod, but if I download the same MP3 from Demonoid I’m breaking the law?

        • AnotherHuman

I’m digging what your saying Funkmeister88. I would like to discuss what i think your two main points in your reply. I would like to take the second point first. The purchasing of music (copyrighted data) and putting it on your itunes/ipod (dubbing).
Once again I could be wrong on this. But the way I understand it. When you buy a “CD” lets say, what your actually paying for is the “right” to the music. Once you have done this you have the “right” to copy it for reasons of backing it up. In case the original medium get damaged i.e the cd don’t play anymore. After all you have paid for the right to listen to it. This is why its ok to use mp3 players and branded ones like itunes/ipods (which I love btw). But although you have the “right” to “dub” for personal use. You have not paid for the right to play in a public performance, nor have you paid for the right to distribute or manufacture the song/album (copyrighted data). I believe this is a closed secret. As Pink floyd (which i love) and Dire straits wouldn’t make so much money every time there’s a media change, vinyl to tape to cd to mp3. To which i think the record labels have often take the piss. “Here is the new remastered version on space cube with 12 seconds of extra content!”. Catching my drift? Your first point “bullying”. If this is the case the major Hollywood studios and the US government, are acting like this. Then I believe they are acting illegally. There for subject to prosecution (did you like how i turned the tables then?). Plus then it should be open up to the public in the EU and US why these bodies have requested the servers was turned off, and on what grounds. Just leaning on a smaller country and hopping nobody wont say anything. Wont work so long as people will openly talk about it? After all the EU spanked Microsoft’s botty for internet explorer. Bullying answer 2A. “Hollywood bully being paranoid” If it is the case then I am proper pissing myself with laughter. Because they are finished. If Hollywood is so scared of this then it shows how weak they are. After all you don’t hear Asian cinema or European or Indian cinema doing this. They must be really frightened that there market share is shrinking (which it is). Hurrah for torrent sires. Hurrah for people that share. Hurrah for people that supports artists. I guess its that thinking that makes Hollywood shake in there boots?

ya it really is and to top it off the actual artist gets paid shit on the dollar whale the company that contracts them (record label or what ever – but certainly not the artist and has absolutely nothing to do with the actual production of the song itself) gets paid a fortune, and then speaks All anti-piracy rhetoric for artists without the artists’ consent, to top it all off.(the artist only gets paid 5% to 8% of the profits and the record labels keep the rest for downloads from iTunes and stuff),(Artists are paid royalties usually somewhere between 8% and 25% of the suggested retail price of the recording) . ( ” http://entertainment.howstuffworks.com/music-royalties6.htm ” )after knowing how the artist get paid shit on the dollar it’s no wonder why ,All the anti-piracy rhetoric is record labels and stuff speaking for artists without the artists’ consent.because before a artist even could consider that they need to first correct the issue where they are being shitted on by the record labels who are making all the real money here and not only are they shitting on the artist but they are also shitting on all the rest of us too with their net censor ship campaigns and their All anti-piracy rhetoric when they have their product priced so expensive that nobody can afford it anyway,(people have family’s to feed and bills to pay ya know, why the fuck would someone chose to buy a couple of songs over keeping the heater on in winter,is that really even a ethical question to ask someone(hey do you want to freeze to deaf listing to my song because you know you will never be able to afford it without some sacrifices or do you want to chose to pay the heating bill in order to keep the heat on and not ever get to listen to my song?are you sure about your choice because if you chose to pay to keep the heat on you will be depriving of this great music )is this really a ethical question to ask someone, because it sounds like a really fuckedup thing to ask to me

It is not the artist that I believe is a victim here but those greedy money hungry people that live of the work the artists does. It is them who fight against these sites and the losses they suffer, the artist never used to get what they deserved even before the internet.
it is the managers, producers, labels, advertisers and everyone else that does not perform the art who rakes in all the money.

there for I believe Demonoid is not a bad thing, it gives artists a name and eventually gets people in to spending their money on them if they truly like their work.
Now those that collect that money should be less greedy and pay it to the artist and only keep a small commission.

And the studios continue to gouge the public by releasing 10 versions of a flick to home media… Theatrical cuts, extended cuts, directors cuts, ultimate packs, etc. They’re still making boatloads of cash and don’t believe otherwise.

    • Isa

Take some time to research before commenting. There have been numerous studies showing that MPAA and RIAA have grossly overstated their profit loss.
At the Same time there can be a case made that file sharing can benefit some one’s bottom line more than hurt it. Brandon Sanderson, author of the Mistborn Trilogy and the man selected to complete the wheel of time series actually offers a free copy of his book Warbreaker for download from his personal website, and yet the printed copy is still selling as well if not better in some places than his other works.

because TPB is a shitty web page, It doesnt have all the categories Demonoid has, and TPB have the same movie 40000 times in different torrents with many fakes and a community of stupid people that doesnt give a shit to seed, public trackers are the only places where you download a torrent with 10 seeds and 15 leechers and your download speed is like 50KB/ps or less, when in demonoid a torrent with like 3 or 5 seeds give me speeds from 500KBps to 4MBps

      • Oneloop1984

I don’t know why you’re complaining that people don’t seed. Go to any hollywood movie, you won’t find one with less than 100 seeds. Isn’t that enough for you?

        • http://www.facebook.com/chris.kratzke.9 Chris Kratzke

rares are hard to find and if you are lucky enough to find them in the first place they usually don’t have many seeds at all,if any (dead torrent) ,besides some people don’t like hollywood movie’s anymore i mean after all how many times do they need to make a new “Men in black” or a new “bat man” movie, before they get a new idea for a original movie instead of just using the same old idea’s and creating squeal after squeal after squeal after squeal and just continuing that same cycle. on that “Go to any hollywood movie, you won’t find one with less than 100 seeds”-try to find a torrent for the movie “The Vagrant (1992)” that’s a hollywood movie it might be a little old but its a great movie and it dose not have any seeds in fact you can’t even find a torrent for it right now,its a almost perfect example of a rare.however i myself am a big anime fan because the writers for anime are much more creative and original than hollywood, check out “gantz ” , “crystal blaze”,”tokko” or “Mermaid Forest”,and see what i mean, you wont find originality or quality story lines like that in hollywood anymore,a long time ago back in the days of the show ” the twilight zone” good graphics did not exist and the movies and shows relied on the story lines to make their shows good, but not any more now its just all about a stupid idea that more explosions and better graphics make movies good and the story line dose not matter at all anymore.i think that a good movie has a good story line (most important part of a movie) and the graphics are not important, but better graphics can help do a better job of telling the story(the least important part of a movie,it only aids in telling the story hence if the story is crappy the movie will be crappy no matter how good the graphics are).

While I do miss Demonoid, I do prefer fully private trackers. They are smaller and have much less active seeds, but they also are not under scrutiny/investigation by the authorities, so are less likely to have their servers/databases seized and analyzed, and therefore possibly having member information then under investigation.

As to artists getting their share, when I do find a movie or album I like, I *do* purchase it, as a matter of fact I ordered about $200 in DVDs this week. What I like about torrents is to be able to preview movies before paying out my hard earned money (scarce as it is), instead of paying up front just to find out the movie is total crap!

Demonoid’s best thing was being able to find rare/obscure stuff which is rarely found now, even TPB and other good sized sites just don’t have the same volume of seeded items.

    PirateForLife

    • meowmix

i’d have said ‘seeded treasures’ myself as i’ve found stuff there that was not available anywhere else or comercialy buyable.

    • NoBrainer

You idiot did you actually realize that you had just contribute $190 to those MAFIAA scumbag and they could easily benefit from YOUR money to hunt your silly ass down any moment from now for downloading pirated material from the net.

You just paid for your own downfall…

      Peace.

      • NoBrainer

And oh I forgot to mention that the missing $10 had gone to artist pocket

      • Toasterenvelope

Being a dick does not help matters, especially when it comes to
someones ethical considerations. The poster you are replying to is behaving in a way that is responsible to themselves- not everyone consumes whatever they want and shrugs off the idea that maybe some really good stuff should be paid for..

        • Guest

They might donate through other channels to get the money to the artist though and not through the pointless middleman.

    • Toasterenvelope

Try Before You Buy is a boon to individuals who do not want their disposable income to be needlessly wasted. Some people do not seem to realize that though.

    • Oneloop1984

Can I make a request? Put all your rare/obscure torrents together and make a torrent of it. Then come back here and share the magnet link with us. Lets try to salvage as much as possible. Thanks.

    • Bookworm51485

That’s definitely my main reason for downloading, though I don’t really download music anymore (since most of it sucks) or movies (*see previous reasoning). Most of what I download now are TV shows or anime that I can’t easily find here, and ebooks. I learned my lesson after buying like $50 worth of books (which really didn’t add up to as many books as you might think, given the price) and finding that they all SUUUUUCKED!! I’m tired of reading published books that make it clear the author wasn’t even trying. I mean, really, how many misspelled words did we find in that chapter? Wow, didn’t even try to fix the ridiculously poor grammar there. It’s absurd.

I don’t have much money and I’m not willing to waste it on something that I don’t know is good. Once I’ve read it and seen that it’s good, then I’ll buy it (and have more than once).

      • Cherubim25

damn right, i do not downlaod new things often, but when i do i always buy the game/movie/book/whatever if i enjoyed it even slightly. sometimes i do not even play the game or watch the thing again and it will just sit on a shelf until a friend or family member wants to use it for a night or two.

i downloaded 300 gigs of books a couple of years ago..my lil “give credit where credit is due” moral crap cost me out the wazoo that summer lol i even had to buy a new bookshelf….ahwell something for the children to read when they grow up, if people even read by the time they are adults.

    • Cherubim25

..wish i could even find a private tracker worth a crap, somebody got me into one the other day..half the torrents were either broken, non seeded, or contained infected files.

Come back Demonoid. I miss you!!

  • PirateForLife

    Oh, I forgot…
Even if Demonoid does come back up, I am not sure I will use it again. Sudden changes to the domain’s DNS servers and all, conflicting reports as to it coming back or not.

The Site admins (supposedly) replying (by email I presume) to TorrentFreak, what if the authorities have already taken control of the domain and now have control over the email and are posing as the real site owners/admins??

And even if it is the real deal and it comes back, I’m pretty sure that there are tons of people who have already stopped seeding many of the torrents from before. So I do fear that it just would not be anything like it was before

    • Simon

What information does Ernesto have to think that he’s communicating with the real owner after the site was put up for sale and then forcibly removed from sale by authorities? And why are they suddenly responding quickly by email? Honeypot?

      • Pelham123

Occam’s Razor suggests that Demonoid simply went the way of BTJunkie. This article would seem to confirm that.

I loved Demonoid for the DJ sets and mixtapes … but they’re now popping up elsewhere. Even the out-of-print audio and video were on blogs long before Demonoid went public and those are now making a big comeback too.

Bottom line is that the Internet remains the greatest library in the history of our species. Demonoid is just one librarian who found a better-paying job.

        • meowmix

and like the library of alexandria, if the copyright whores get thier way it’ll go the same way: up in flames.

    • Anon

Not me. I used to buy tons of cds for my collection. About ten years ago I downloaded my first album. A year after that I stopped buying cds entirely. Maybe I’ve bought 3 in the last ten years. I just sold all my cds for $1 each, or at least I tried to. Same with dvds. I had a huge collection, but around the time I discovered axxo movies that all stopped. After a few years I dusted the dvds off and took them to a pawn shop. For every person who still buys cds and dvds there’s a thousand people like me.

Lots of loyal people would reupload their files again.  And add new stuff.  D would not be what it was at once but given a couple of months it would recover.

    • toasterenvelope

Maybe/Maybe not. You do not have the details to make an informed decision.

      • Guest

Yes he does. If the site did come back, all the users would make it what it was again like they did last time.

What other info does he need?

It could be a year or two and there would still be vast amounts of people that flood back to it once they hear the news. Those people would be mostly the old members. They will never forget and will be back there at a drop of a hat, whenever that may be.I feel like saying it’s a fact but it wouldn’t be true. It highlights how much I believe this though.

I’m not an expert, but I’m not sure that would be legal. I think it could be considered entrapment.

    • Cherubim25

i will still use it, most of the things i download are things that are either offered free but torrents are faster, or they are no longer sold anywhere….not sure you can be “busted” for downloading something that has not been available anywhere else for 10+ years. maybe, but i doubt a judge would be that prickish..

  • anon

So now, you know it, they have backups, and they can come back.
Just wait month after month and see, time will tell.

  • Jake Murphy

Theft implies taking something away from a source or sources that results in that thing no longer being in possession of the source from which it was taken. Torrenting, therefore, is not theft. In fact, those that ‘steal’ music are more likely to support the artists themselves as well as local record stores, as opposed to these giant corporations that own nearly every facet of the industry. They’re also the people who (by and large) attend more concerts, music festivals, and other artistic performances than most.

    • meowmix

like my oldest daughter. she goes to lots of gigs because she prefers to hear the music live.

    • Dirty_Bear

“Theft implies taking something away from a source or sources that results in that thing no longer being in possession of the source from which it was taken.”

In legal terms, yes, this is correct. But not in coloquial terms. Even the law uses the word theft to describe theft in a coloquial sense. Look up “Theft of Service” for example. That term alone proves you wrong.

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theft_of_services

      • Guest

Jake is correct according to both the law and the English language itself. Your “colloquial terms” are bullshit overruled by a dictionary and law school 101.

        • Dirty_Bear

That was an interesting attempt at an argument.

      • Toasterenvelope

Data replication is reality, Dirty_Bear and all who read this. The File-Sharers are increasing the availability of works, not reducing them. The only thing that reduces, as far as I can tell, is the perceived monetary value of the source material. That is a good thing for people in general but not collectors.

About theft of service; often as the earnings surpasses the cost of developing, producing and maintaining the things which allow services to be rendered the cost to consumers remains the same or increases along with “market conditions”, without adjustments, unless there is dire need for competitive action. Refer to proposed “level the playing field” legislation in reference especially to municipal Internet Services who planned to offer (for instance) fiber optic capability to an area previously ignored by the private sector, likely because of profit motives and definitely b/c of an inherent disregard for people in areas that are not economically viable. Anyways, the large providers whined and complained about not being able to “compete” in area where they had no desire to occupy until then. Essentially, those who offer services that can be “thefted” are often unfair and care only about their profit margin. They screw people over every day. Who is really in the right? nobody?
        /Rant

        • Dirty_Bear

I don’t mean to be rude Toasterenvelope but, in all that text, I don’t think that there was an explanation of why Theft of Service isn’t theft in a non legal sense. I feel that you perhaps went off on a bit of a tangent or perhaps made thing more complicated than they need be.

        • Anoynmousgoat

the only reason you can get away with calling cable tapping “stealing” is because of the electricity being sent through the lines that forms the signal. the same does not apply to a satellite dish or antenna, too bad.  .-.

        • Dirty_Bear

“the only reason you can get away with calling cable tapping “stealing” is because of the electricity being sent through the lines that forms the signal. the same does not apply to a satellite dish or antenna, too bad.  .-.”

It’s called theft of service because what is being stolen is the service which requires payment. Nothing to do with electricity  (Although you can steal electricity). It doesn’t have to be cable TV either. It indeed could be satellite TV.

      • Toasterenvelope

Yes i was off-topic. Complication is king.

      • Pelham123

Theft of service implies taking something away from a source or sources that results in
that thing no longer being in possession of the source from which it was
taken. The thing in this case is services, or if you prefer, labor.

By definition, any term of law is not colloquial.

        http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/colloquial

Jake’s bit about supporting artists is misplaced, too – it’s a moral argument for torrenting but it has nothing to do with law.

      • Stonecold

        NO. Incorrect!

Theft of Service is also theft, because it assumes a service is something where there is a finite ability to supply it, so for example if I were to somehow steal your lawn-mowing service to keep my grass short, I would be reducing the availability of the service and causing other people’s grass to grow out of control.  I’d be a thief of your service.  Downloading movies, etc isn’t thief of service because there is an INfinite supply of the data, assuming you’re paying for the internet bandwidth which is a FINITE service.
That term alone proves you don’t understand what a service is.

        • Dirty_Bear

“Theft of Service is also theft, because it assumes a service is something where there is a finite ability to supply it”

The fact that obtaining cable TV without paying is considered Theft of Service invalidates your argument.
          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cable_theft

        • chronoss chiron

there is no theft when something does not exist in reality….so sorry i do not follow that line of crap….that is hollywood mentality and i for one am not biting….the more we say imaginary property the better….

Starting with only those people who were really sharing and committed to the site, then slowly allowing others to join. Rinse and repeat every few years. :)

Right now, trackers from the (allegedly) UK are picking up the slack (no, I won’t say which ones, hehe), amid various censorship cat & mouse games… which is comical to say the least..

OMG WTF??? Come on seriously? You are in a place for torrents what you think you are going to change us in our sinful ways? I am an artist and I make money with my art. Do I get upset when someone takes it? No not really.. For whatever culture you sell to there will ALWAYS be a culture underneith that pirates it. These are the people who don’t pay for anything. Feel happy they took an interest in your craft. These are also the same people that give you free promotion if they like it. So MAKE SOMETHING GOOD! These people will never buy your art, but they might mention you to someone that will.

When I was a musician I made ALL of my tracks Free to the public just had to sign up to my mailing list. I made more money selling merch and actual copies of the CD which I produced cheap since they were free tracks. Than I used to on CD sales alone. The market is freaking changing and those artists that don’t change with it are getting left behind. Oh yeah and torrents? They got me out there in the hands of people and I got a serious rush of traffic to all my websites and social media. Quit making your art expensive, roll with the punches. Quit putting multi million dollar artists on your tracks that cost a fortune to produce. Make it yourself, find a studio that will work with you.

    EVOLVE

    • GreatKitsune

Also… Quit making excuses for why your stuff doesn’t sell. Go out there and push your brand. If you have no idea what I am talking about you will be lost in the shuffle anyways!

    *Wonderful Demonoid Uploaders/Seeders*:

Many of the old demonoid torrents are still running, even those only on Demonoid’s tracker, but uisng DHT and Peer Exchange instead of the tracker.  Please offer seeding for a while on your previous demonoid torrents for the folks who still need to finish things or will also help seed.  I had a backlog of things about 8 months long to complete later when it went down.  About 1/2 of those are still working now when I try them and get to them!  But also have about 10 things at 95% or more now stuck.  Need the seeders and those who completed torrent downloads to help out here and then others will assist!  The original torrent files will work if you seed (turn on DHT and peer exchange).

If you don’t want to do that, please consider re-upping the exact same torrents to TPB or KAT but not as ISOS or RARs.  List all the files separate in the torrent.  Then anyone stranded can pick up from where they left off, and just get the remaining files they need to finish and then can help seed!  Keep the scene going and the great demonoid legacy till it comes back later on!

I agree with many others here, demonoid was great for rare, out of print, or otherwise non purchasable stuff.  The kind of stuff that ought to just be free at the Smithsonian or similar to increase human knowledge.  Let’s keep it going.

I imagine the reason it will take so long to return is they will have to find some way to host the site without legal problems. They could follow what.cd and incorporate anonymously in an offshore location. It is expensive but would provide some legal protection for the administrators.

If you are claiming to be an artist and you say that places like Demonoid have made you broke, then your either are not that good and noone wants your product anyway, or you are lazy and you dont do any shows and you rely on your cd sales to pay your bills, which pretty much means that you are a worthless artist that only sounds good in a studio after all the tweaks to your voice and fuck ups have been fixed. Places like demonoid get your stuff out there for people to see and hear and enjoy. Thats what making music is all about anyway, right. Letting people relax, remember and enjoy. People that would of never listened to my music have heard it. I owe that thanks to places like Demonoid. I will also add, with all the crap, lazy music and movies being produced today, it serves the labels right that people have figured out how to pirate and share for free. If you make a crap product and then overcharge people for it, then you can ALWAYS expect the people to figure out a way around. Labels have forever screwed the people and the artist, and now they dont like it when it is being done back to them. LIVE WITH IT!!

Deminoid will never die ……free the demon!!!

  • Asd

This article makes no sense. It was Demonoid.me long time ago. Demonoid will come back in another format i guess.

  • Asd

Apparently a Brazilian company bought it. Chances are they will revive it in Brazil.

Whats going to happen when torrents go from sites like the bay, and demonoid to cloud computers. Where its not in a single location but strung across multiples.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again.  Torrent sites are like medical and gun manufactures. They produce some good sources of material, yet there are some copyright discrepancies with what is uploaded.

Medical, Oxycontin ring a bell, it was great yet it was and still is being abused. Why not go after the company that produces it and the places that store it….. We do not do that because it does not make much sense.

Gun Companies. Long time court disputes with guns kill people etc etc. No we dont throw the Smith and Wesson in jail. We throw the person who used the weapon in jail.

So why are the people who host the servers getting charged when instead they should charge the people who upload it.  By going after the single source on the server side, it just allows another person to come up with another server site and they have to start over.

    Example Napster lawsuite, resulted in
    Kazaa, limewire, frostwire etc etc.
You take away one object it will just be replaced by another.
The uploaders are parasites that need a host.
And we will go from host to host.

but if go after the uploaders. I gurantee it would help reduce the copyright issues.

    On an offnote category
What bout bootleggers across the countries?
what bout people who record off the tv/audio files then sell them?

i barely see people getting locked up for these? but they still break the law…

    finaly say:
Leave the people who create a good source of material alone and go after those who choose to download the illegal material/upload the illegal material. Its not the host/owners fault how their service is being used.

They have legal agreements that each user signs upon creating a membership to prevent them from being shut down. SOOO Why the cuss is this going on?

I hope the a-holes in the USA, Interpol and Ukraine who took down Demonoid all get dick cancer.

I thought Id take the time (since demonoid was down) to go back to my roots and visit the local HMV (music store).  Here is what I experienced: Rude Staff, the albums I WAS going to buy, they didnt have them  in stock.  Also the staff told me that Id have to order them and in a few weeks come back and pick them up. NOW here I am going into a music store to BUY music instead of downloading them and they should of welcomed me with open arms.  Now im not saying they should of rolled out the red carpet.  so all in all I wanted to say I MISS YOU DEMONOID !!!

  • Atlag2000

I really don’t get it…..you go to public library and you can borrow these media…..if you’ve got the right equipment and software you can copy it……we are all just sharing………

  • Thebusdriver

Myself and another longterm old-school demonoid user decided to open a tracker to help fill the hole left by our favorite tracker. Everything is still in testing but already the word is spreading and our community is growing and many of those coming are Demonoid lovers. We invite you to join us in these early stages and watch as our tracker and community grows and evolves!

Tried to sign up. Never received the confirmation email. Can’t even find contact info on site to let admin know.

  • IBBT

Demonoid I miss you. You were my go to site for everything!!! It’s like my right hand’s been cut off. Thank you for all the time you put into the site for all of us! It sounds like there are a lot of difficulties right now, but I sincerely hope you’re able to overcome them. Whether now or in the future. Thanks so much! Miss you lots and lots!!!

  • No Email

I hope it comes back. They were the only tracker for two files I’m trying to download and have over 90% of both—I can’t find these -anywhere- else on the Internet because they’re foreign, and I hope to complete my downloads.

Many of my favorite downloads I found demonoid’s credits with them. Thank you; please return!

  • Bob Bobson

I just want to know whether if it comes back, it will start over or will pick up where it left off, account-wise. That is, will we have to re-register or will our accounts and ratios be preserved? If not, then I will finally delete the stupid files that have been taking up space on my drive for so long solely so that I can seed them to increase my Demonoid ratio.

  • Kstudley

I hate to say it. I have been a Demonoid User since 2009. It switched in 2010 to the .me from .com, so you really do need to check your information more carefully.

I do hope Demonoid comes back, and will pray the it happens soon, until then, I will keep checking the news reports.

  • Mademoiselle_rose1

I was using Demonoid to download ebooks, which was just unreal.  Now it’s down I found another site recommended by someone some time ago on here for ebooks MIRC IRCHighway.  I used it for a couple of weeks and it was just brilliant but now everytime I go I get thrown off.  I’ve tried reading their instructions but being a techno no-hoper I can’t work it out.  Does anyone use MIRC IRCHighway for books and can explain in basic terms how I can keep using it?

    • makarios

Try kat.ph for books. At this writing they are down but probably not for long. IRCHighway doesn’t accept new members.

  • Bartbob182

i dont feel bad pirating content cuz when i see an episode of mtv cribs obvi they arent losing out that bad when theyre showing off multi million dollar houses and fancy cars and shit like a one million dollar bugatti bunch of rich fuks

    • fllshdws

So true, years ago I remember on one episode that idiot Russell Simmons and his wife Kamora were showing off their gold plated, jewel encrusted toilet that cost over $100,000. Have they no shame.

  • Naggingregent

Can they at least put up the forums until the site is ready.

  • MissAnnThrope

This disappoints me.  99% of what I downloaded on Demonoid wasn’t even available on CD.  If it was, then I’d find it used for some outrageous price, because it was discontinued years ago.  I live in a town where there is really nowhere to buy music, other than Target and Wal*Mart.  Like I’m going to find anything that isn’t top 40 in either of those places.  Oh, order the mp3s?  Sorry, but I am one of those sound quality snobs that wants flac files.  Maybe if iTunes ever admits their formats are inferior and start offering flac, I might consider it.

  • Chrubim25

demonoid was my go to site for old movies, ps1/ps2 games…series that i had missed on tv and anime that you cant find in the store…the pirate bay works, but honestly demonoid to me was 2000000000000 times better for this. never worried about a virus, never worried about issues from my ISP (especially since i downloaded old stuff mostly) and there were no bogus torrents, they all worked, i miss demonoid :( …….its almost impossible to find a lot of the torrents on any other site.. /sigh well i guess i dont really need movies from 1940′s and video games from 1990′s anyhow..wait..yes..yes i do

Despite having many people who strongly disagree, I still think the argument: “Downloading copyrighted media from the internet that you wouldn’t otherwise have bought is still okay” holds clout. Downloading torrents can be a pain. Especially when your dealing with The Pirate Bay or the likes, where speeds are crawling at best, its the people who can’t afford, or simply pay the money for, the media that use it. It’s a fairly small percentage of the world that pirates media. I have done my fair share, but as soon as I got a job, I started buying media again. Now that I’m out of a job, it’s back to looking for torrents.

Take from this what you will, flame if you’d like, and have a..nice…day?

  • Thusbabylane

demonoid. why? im lost without u.

  • Riven Keenan

Thepiratebay is more like a backup car. Something you use because you have to. Because you’re everyday car is in the shop.
Demonoid was the best site up there. Very very tight community despite the fact the had open registration for a while. Which is how i got an account back i 08 i think. And i seeded TB of data because i felt safe. But never movies and games for long periods of time.
But the really rare gems you could find on demonoid that you could never even dream of finding on any of the other sites.
Demonoid was a trophy rooms of rare unpopular books that you just can’t easily find anywhere else.
As for music production software / VST’s. Incredible. Demonoid was stockpiled with amazing VST effects. that you can’t find on TPB.

In my opinion. And i’m sure many will agree with me. Taking demonoid down wasn’t just taking down a site. It was almost a massive book burning campaign.

PS: Maybe someone should look into a loop hole for torrent sites. Maybe have section of the website that has the entire text version of the bible or some other religious scripture on it. So if any government entity or agency takes down the site, it can be said in court that shutting down the site destroyed or interfered with belief. It could be like burning the american flag almost. A government agency, taking down a site with religious information on it. Especially with that video that disrespected islam that was on youtube. They would most certainly think twice about taking a site down if it somehow had some kind of belief system intertwined in it. But what am i saying. lol. I’m an atheist.

I think that this really stinks butt!!! I am in the US and I am totally lost with out Demonoid!! I waited over 5 years to get an invite, and they saved me a lot of money on very necessary programs I needed to get my business off the ground! I am a disabled woman with poor credit and very limited income, and with out Demonoid, I would have never been able to go into business for myself! Because of Demonoid, I was able to download and evaluate software to make sure it fit my needs before shelling out thousands of dollars. 90% of the software I downloaded from there, I later purchased legally, so I don’t understand why sharing is such a big deal! Prior to siteslike this, people used to share things all the time! No one complained then! Please come back!!!

  • fllshdws

If this is true I’m sure they’ll come back one day, maybe next year, but they’ll want to make certain when they do reemerge it will be in a country where Hollywood can’t buy the law.

It was the best site for e-books and audiobooks.

@Andre – TOR is suitable but not for speed. When it comes to the deep web, things get a little slow.

it will be back soon , it’s all usa government fault they are bunch of bastard , tryin to control everthing , but they are so stupid to realized there is no stop to piracy mainly because it’s worldwide everybody does it , and because they are so stupid to realized that everybody is already givin up on the idea against piracy , that’s why we got netflix, hulu , others webstream companies tryin to survive sellin their huge media center for a short amount of money monthly, and everybody can watch it anywhere , because watchin tv in your living room , rent dvds that is so in the past we all watch it online anywhere, anytime , I think it’s bad when ppl sell like if I download a tv show and record on dvds to sell , I think that person should be punish . but I if I download only for my own entertainment
that’s not bad plus isn’t harming anyone , plus the networks should focus their media online aswell there are few that does it but most of them don’t , plus the audience would be amazinly huge , and with commercials , merchandising , they could profit much more than they do today ….

I self-released my first album in 2008, posted it on demonoid, and of course included my opinion in the description about the great potential for bit-torrent to be used as a tool for musicians to gain exposure and exploit its massive distribution capability… The global admin posted my torrent’s description, with a link, in the news section – top & center of the homepage. 20,000+ downloads, and counting…
It gave me the encouragement I needed to stick with my music, more than just as a ‘hobby’. Almost 500 people commented, with (priceless) constructive criticism & compliments. I’ve treasured the ability to browse through those comments, over the years, whenever I needed a bit of inspiration. Now, its all gone… Of course, my stuff is on all the major trackers, but Demonoid had a real sense of community, which is lacking on the other sites. They’re all just hit-and-run.
I WANT MY DEMONOID BACK, GODDAMMIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol. NOW.
