Playstation Network Shut Down To End Piracy Free-For-All

Tomorrow a week will have passed since Sony took its Playstation Network completely offline. The company has given only the most token of updates in that time and in the meanwhile the rumor mill has been churning. However, new information has surfaced which points to Sony’s action being prompted by an unprecedented piracy threat.

Last week Sony shut down its PlayStation Network (PSN) and in the information vacuum that followed, fingers were mainly pointed at Anonymous – had they pulled off another of their paralyzing DDoS attacks? Quickly, however, Anonymous denied the accusations, even going as far as issuing a press release claiming innocence.

Then another day passed. And another. And another. This was clearly more than a DDoS but Sony were keeping very quiet – almost too quiet. Eventually Sony admitted they had been subjected to some sort of attack.

Yesterday they made another announcement, informing their user base that the whole system will be offline indefinitely. No further information from Sony but there is a man who thinks he knows what causing the extended downtime.

‘Chesh’ is a staff member from psx-scene.com, a site dedicated to hacking and modding Playstations. Together with various developers in the scene he’s been putting all the pieces together and if his theory holds, Sony has been battling their biggest crisis yet.

Chesh believes that the problem stems from the availability of a new CFW (custom firmware) for the Playstation 3. CFW’s give hardware modified functionality and REBUG, as it’s known, turns a standard PS3 into a machine which provides access to some of the PSN’s features usually reserved for developers.

REBUG, which was released on the last day of March, apparently has a trick up its sleeve in that it is able to get previously hacked Playstation 3 consoles back online after they’d been excluded by Sony. It’s not a feature built in by design, but one that users have learned how to exploit. Chesh reports that some REBUG users were initially using it to play Call of Duty on the dev networks around April 3rd. Neat enough in itself but there was a monster in the shadows.

Since REBUG allowed users to connect to a previously secure and private developer network, certain information provided by users wasn’t security checked by Sony. According to Chesh, one of the items whose authenticity was never checked was – unbelievably – credit card numbers. People could apparently make them up and get access to whatever content they wanted.

“What happened next was extreme piracy of PSN content,” Chesh explained. He said that over on PSX-Scene he learned of people downloading free Sony content from the dev networks on April 7th.

As we know, Sony shut down the entire PSN on April 20th and it remains down today. Since Sony have told their customers next to nothing about the problems it has faced – including whether or not credit card information is safe – it’s a safe bet that none of the above will be confirmed or denied.

Chesh himself admits that while the above information is true, he can’t verify 100% if it’s the absolute reason why Sony pulled the PSN offline. That said, it’s a big enough problem for them to do so and if Sony has pulled the plug for another unknown reason, their problems only go deeper. And it’s hard to imagine a situation worse than this.

Update: Sony posted an update on the shut down.

my husband and son are going thru serious withdrawl. planned on spending whole easter weekend playing new game they just bought. Now son is demanding I get X-Box. I am demanding hubby get over it, maybe finish the tiles in my kitchen he started a week ago…

      • Plop

        Well get them bitchslapped.

Tell your son that he can have an XBox when he’s saved up for one himself – maybe he’ll learn to appreciate the things he has a little better ;)

And yes, get your hubby’s arse kicked if he’s not finished a bit of tiling. I mean, come on, it’s not like it’s a particularly difficult job in the realms of DIY.

i agree to get them square takes precision, and then trying to stop people from walking on them while the grout still dries can also be problematic. i consider this to be far more important than the fact a hacker has my credit cards details…

In any Corporation heads would roll. A seven day outage!!!! That is unheard of!
When I puchased my two PS3 systems (One for me and another for my children) it was for
nothing else but that the on-line gaming system was included in the price of purchase.
Now I am being skimmed by Sony.

Like every other corporation out there Sony has gone overboard and is past the borders
of neglegience. No one is holding this company liable for the Damage and quality of time
it has taken away from me and my family. In Companies that are taken seriously. a seven day

“No one is holding this company liable for the Damage and quality of time it has taken away from me and my family”

So…you’re pissed off because the PSN being down takes away time you’re spending with your family? Back when I was a kid “quality time with my family” involved eating out, playing games outside, maybe reading a book or playing a board game inside. I’m not a huge PS3 gamer (nor do I do much online with my PSP) but if I was a parent and I couldn’t play on the PSN with my family, I’d find some other activities to take part in and just enjoy spending time with my family, not getting pissed off at Sony just because we can’t play a video game online.

        • Nom

Or maybe he’s upset that their shitty attention to security even in the direct threat of immentent action from nefarious organizations lead to his entire account being exposed along with, among other things, all of his personal information and possibly credit card information along with that of 77,000,000 other customers?

        • MrE

“Going Outside” is for losers who suck at Video Games.

      • Eyehamsofaking

free service derp… and if you got PSN plus then you wasted your money. if you wanted to play to pay and have continuing service buy an Xbox.

      • ImaR0Kya

I’d be more concerned with the user information that was “stolen”. From Sony’s warning notice it appears that passwords and credit card info were stored unencrypted. Guess PCI & DSS compliance aren’t a worry for Sony.

Wish Sony would spend more time securing their servers & OUR info than sueing GeoHot and other researchers. Face it Sony, you’ll fail at stopping psx mods, just like you failed at copy-protecting CD’s. DRM rootkits anyone?

And what exactly DID Sony do to him? Douchebag. Sony was only working to protect their investments and to keep gaming on an even playing field. I agree that Geoputz should be in jail. He boasts about hacking iPhones, Xboxes, Playstations. What gives him the right to get away with doing that? Because he can? I think the only idiot here it you and geodouche!

        • Glib

Maybe people like doing whatever they want with the hardware they purchased. Some people only learn what they bought is crippled on purpose when it’s too late. When my co-worker bought an iPhone, he was so happy for about a week. Then he realized my boss’ Android phone that cost 2/3 as much has access to ANYTHING he wants to install … no needing to ask Grandpa Apple if it’s ok.

Some people just like using what they bought and paid for to do whatever they want with it; seems like he’s a bit of a cyber freedom fighter … of sorts.

        • CommonSense

Because he fucking paid for it you douche canoe. Listen if I sell you a car and it comes with a chain that keeps you from driving more than 2 miles from your house and the local store has access to a big ass chain cutter. What would you do? You paid for your car right? WhyTF can’t you drive it w/e the fuck you want to? The stupidity of people today is only surpassed by their childish actions whilst behind a veil of anonymity.

        • Nom

No, what gives him the right is that it’s his property and he can do what he wants with his property. What is with you fucking retards who only equate hacking a device with “oh noes, using wallhacks in video games!”? The whole point of GeoHot’s efforts were to give you the ability to do what you want with a piece of hardware that YOU OWN. You know, kind of like how it’s my fucking right to yank the standard stereo system out of my car and put in a custom one. You know, BECAUSE IT BELONGS TO ME.

          You fucking ignorant git.

        • Neomatrix1968

well Nom if you read the term of use agreement it states that you agree to use the product for it’s intended uses if you go against the agreement you are in violation of the law and can be fined or worse or do you idiots not pay attention to what you agree to.

        • Scary Devil Monastery

Need i remind you that it doesn’t really matter what is written in the “terms and conditions” as they are unable to override the rights guaranteed by common law?

According to Apple’s ToS jailbreaking the iPhone is against their company’s policy. This does not prevent the undisputable fact that the US supreme court considers jailbreaking perfectly legal.

I.e. The EULA or ToS you “agree” to simply isn’t law, usually carries little to no legal weight what so ever, and is for the most part simply to be considered a way in which the company can “opt-out” of further service.

Sony’s terms of use simply means that if you violate what it says on the box and in the manual Sony can be entitled to end SOME services they are rendering without getting hanged themselves for breach of contract. Nothing else.

I could sell you a box of cereal with the words “By opening this box you surrender full rights to the vendor to have sex with you, your wife, and your pre-teen daughter” written boldly on the cover. The fact that you’ve opened the box still doesn’t change the law regarding sexual assault.

          That’s not rocket science.

        • Riseer

Geohot is at fault here if you can’t understand that fk off..

      • Scary Devil Monastery

What, you mean like jailbreaking the PS3 = his own personal property? Next up you’ll be whining about people customizing their cars and bicycles, i’m sure.

        • Mavowar

U are ABSOLUTELY right Scary Devil Monastery. When you buy a console it is yours to do with as you please. You are not renting Microsoft or Playstation equiptment. Otherwise they’d have a case. Which is why allot of this crap doesn’t go very far.
Does Microsoft go after people who remove Windows on their PC’s and went to Linux?
Realistically Sony and Microsoft love their stuff. They get they’re money out of you one way or another. Just look at the Hard drive issue. Why can’t they put Tb drives into these consoles that sell for $80 at Best Buy. Why are we limited to a 250gb Hard drive? Or if you want to upgrade sony and mirosoft gets you for $100 for a 250gb hard drive. Which you can’t even find on hand at computer stores anymore. And if you do they are around $40.

Don’t get me started on that damn network adaptor for the old version of the xbox which still retails for $80 for some reason.

This may sound like i’m complaining about Microsoft more than Sony However I was one of the guys who bought 2 extra controllers (Sixaxis) right before the Dual Shock 3 contollers came out. Game Stop gave me a whopping $10 trade in in order to get the Dual Shock’s. I was out another $100. I recently bought another Blu-Ray player from Sony (Model # BDP-S380) which was advertised to be Netflix ready. Only to get it hooked up and find I need the $100 “Sony” network adaptor. I was pissed as hell.

We bought and paid for our console’s to do with as we please.

        • Nowbella

You’re comparing apples to oranges dink. Hackers do not have the right to copyright protected software, and to alter things that DO NOT, belong to them, ie the psn network or any of the software for the ps3. If they want to hack or mod comps let them build their own, oh that’s right they aren’t smart enough to come up with their own systems, which is why they have to hack someone else’s who did the work. Just goes to show what lazy jerks hacks really are. You are obviously a little kid whose mommy probably bought his system and have no idea what people who work hard to spend $300 + on a system are mad about.

        • Mavowar

Im a 39 year old gamer, with a career, and teenage kid’s buddy.

Pirating copyrighted item’s is illegal Nowbella. However changing the firmware isn’t. Nor should it be.

Also calling me a dink (resorting to name calling) just show’s how immature you are in the arguement.

          Except you’re wrong:

          http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2010/07/feds-ok-iphone-jailbreaking/

It won’t be long before this ruling gets extended to hardware other than cellphones. There’s some really awesome homebrew on the Wii, and lots of stuff people want to try on the PS3.

        • Scary Devil Monastery

I think you should get a clue.

Geohot investigated and hacked his own personal property which is more or less the same as if you bought a lock, found out how to open it without a key – and then posted the solution online. This has been done with kryptonite bike locks, with numerous “safety locks” (see the “bump key”)…and guess what? This is fully legal.

Jailbreaking the iPhone was confirmed to be a completely legal operation all the way up to the US supreme court. Why? Because the phone is your property and you bought it. Chipping/modding consoles? Completely legal. You buy it, it’s your property. Hack it, mod it, paint it purple and fram it if you like.

The fact that in hacking your PS3 you can run another OS on it and that you can run unlicensed software on a jailbroken iPhone does not constitute copyright infringement.

Your argument that it does is as retarded as a statement of “picking the lock on your own home door constitutes burglary” would be.

SONY tried selling a media console which contained a great deal of power, then artificially tried to limit it to roughly 30% of it’s nominal capacity. As soon as an inventive hardware/firmware wizard got his hands on it and restored it to optimum capacity it became possible to use the console for any purpose as a side effect.

      • Anonymous

No. You are gay. I am not crying I am laughing you idiot.

lol, thats fucken great man, if you were the guy who invented the ps3, patented it, got people to write a lot of stuff and state that it is illegal to reverse engineer the ps3 to run illegal apps and then have someone do exactly that, would you be happy? i doubt it you stupid cunt you would try sue the shit out of him because we all know CEO’s just want money. learn to live in someone else’s shoes you no good piece of shit cunt

      • Scary Devil Monastery

Except that the law explicitly states that reverse engineering the PS3, or for that matter ANY OTHER PRODUCT is cool as long as you don’t manufacture and sell it. This has to do with the fact that you purchased the product and therefore own it. Chip it, mod it, take it apart and see how it works, paint it blue and frame it on your wall…and tell other people what you did and how. This is all perfectly legal.

But if you have no concept of “personal property” then i guess you very well COULD make a claim about the hardware someone just bought.

Here’s a clue. Mess with the hardware which you’ve bought you certainly void the warranty. That’s all. Anything which goes beyond you need a lend-lease agreement for.

  • Hikaricore

It doesn’t mean he is spoilt by far, I have an XBOX 360, Wii and have tempted about buying myself a PS3 at that I also have a Gaming PC with a Graphics card I bought just before a Gaming Event that cost more than a PS3 alone.

Not everyone sits screaming in the corner at their Mum demanding these things it’s called get a job, save money and spend at the same time. I own a company, work and College hence how I can afford these things my Family haven’t paid for the new monitor which is sat on my desk just two months old, my family didn’t pay for my PC which has cost me nearing £1000 Custom-Built, they didn’t pay for the new Graphics card nor the XBOX 360 so before you go saying that please get some IQ on actually earning money yourself.

Mainly because I make over $100K a year and don’t like un hooking my consoles to play downstairs or upstairs. Plus my 2 son’s have an xbox in each of they’re rooms for xbox live (4 total 360′s in my house.)

Don’t assume everybody that play’s console games 12 and are only doing so because “Mommy” and “Daddy” bought them.

Yeah, because only spoiled children enjoy gaming and buy stuff. I have consoles all over the house. I have three entertainment centers (one in my home office, one in the living room, one in the spare bedroom) and each has all three consoles. Not to mention all of the older consoles I have sitting around (24 at last count, not including portables) more or less as collector’s pieces.

It’s the benefit of having a successful career and doing what the fuck you like.

Wow, horrible way of doing things Sony. If things get compromised by hackers (or whatever’s the case), then you let your users know what’s up and you tell them the truth on wether or not our privacy is compromised as well.

Apparently they care more about their own servers than their customers.

  • Guest

Yeah….Xbox live NEVER went down for weeks at a time…or um wait YES IT DID! And it wasn’t voluntary like Sony’s outage is. Xbox live just launched too soon.

And as for the hacking. These so called “hacktivist” didn’t take down the network, they just got in long enough for Sony to realize they were vulnerable and Sony chose to bring the network down as a result.

I bet these hackivist (AND I HOPE IT”S Anonymous) is crapping their pants right now because they know they are being hunted now. Seems like alot of trouble to get the rights back to make the PS3 capable of pirating software.

I hope they find the person responsible and make the example out of them. They thought Geohalt was unfairly penalized…..Sony is going to make sure they flex their legal muscle on whoever was responsible for this.

    • Scary Devil Monastery

You really are an idiot. If you find your network compromised the way Sony did, any form of responsible countermeasure simply involves taking the developer platform offline, NOT the general playerbase.

Instead Sony shot themselves in the foot, alienating their customer base since it’s quite clear that they are perfectly willing to shoot ten legitimate customers in order to nail one guy with a hacked PS3.

As for the PS3 hack, it remains an unassailable fact that the reason it was hacked was to restore the initial capabilities it had when it was first launched. Being able to play pirated software on it is simply a side feffect of a user having control over his OWN hardware.

      • Nowbella

wow, you really don’t have a clue do you? The software that makes the ps3 just that is not technically “owned” by the consumer. It’s like saying you buy a dvd movie or music cd and copy it and give it away free copies to all of your friends, is that legal- no. Yes you own a ps3, but at no time do you have the right to use it in an illegal fashion. You sound like a supporter of the very dirtbag hacks that are ruining the gaming for the rest of us. like i said if it’s such a problem, BUILD YOUR OWN! oh wait your not smart enough to. No one forced anyone to accept sony’s terms on using the psn network or their system, and their is absolutly no defence for being a two bit lazy theif so shut the heck up you dum wanker and let the adults talk.

        • http://twitter.com/xRDVx xRDVx

And you do realize he could have instead gone through all the work of creating a custome fireware that connected to Sony’s infraestructure. A work that would not involve hacking… but oh wait, (afaik) they blocked some of the components in such a low-level it was easier to hack that to re-write. And while yes, building his own is another solution, if I told you: Don’t learn english, CREATE your own language from scracth, you would tell me to go fuck myself, I guess you’re in no right as saying “Build your own” hardware. But ya know, just saying.

        • Anonymous

If I buy a PS3, then it and everything on it belongs TO ME. I will do with it whatever I please. If Sony and the law believes otherwise, then Sony and the law are quite mistaken. Anybody who tries to dictate what I can do with my own property wins a free one-way ticket to Go Fuck Yourself Land.

        • Scary Devil Monastery

Apparently i have far more of a clue than you.

The US supreme court confirmed that it’s completely legal to hack or mod as you please when Apple tried taking the iPhone jailbreakers to court. Chipping/modding a console on both hardware and software level has always been completely legal.

What you are saying is that if you buy a car and fill it with gas the car vendor has the absolute right to tell you from what pump station you ned to purchase gas for the rest of your life.

You have the absolute right to do whatever you like to your own PS3. And you have the right to tell people about what you did and how you did it. You do not have the right to meddle with someone ELSES PS3 without permission.

Now here’s a few clues for you. Sony meddled with other peoples consoles when they removed the “Other OS” functionality. Geohot meddled exclusively with his own property and told other people what he did.
The hackers who may have invaded Sony’s network may have made use of the information Geohot released but at the end of the day if a bank is burgled that burglary is not and never has been the responsibility of the random guy who pointed out that the alarm system was insecure.

Oh, and by the way…learn to spell before you embarrass your poor suffering third-grade grammar teachers further.

        • Nom

          Your stupidity is overwhelming.

If a computer comes with Windows installed and I wipe the drives and install Linux, I’m not violating any letter or spirit of copyright law whatsoever. I own a piece of physical hardware and I installed a piece of software that I wanted to use on it (be it firmware, OS, etc).

You really shouldn’t speak about things you’re ignorant of. It just adds to the noise.

    • Nom

You are retarded. Sony’s outage isn’t voluntary. It’s the result of their customer data being fucking compromised. When the 360 went down for two weeks, it was the result of an extreme unexpected load. Going down because of popularity is not the same as going down, because of poor security. Not that both aren’t just as frustrating as a customer (and owner of both consoles), except that I’d rather not be able to play my console and not have my information stolen by identity thieves to sell on the black market than not be able to play *and* have my information on the black market.

  • Anonymous

Great article dood… funny tho that we have to depend on a ps3 moding site and a torrent site for ALL of the real news not cut and pasted from other sites. Information vacuums show who is doing their job and how many “tech bloggers” have no idea what the information they are copy and pasting from press releases actually means. Although people realize that there is something wrong with these countless blogs they generally cant figure out that they are de-facto pr agents for the tech industry… case in point, I called Sony on day 2 and they said, “no it will not be back until the middle of next week, next weekend at the latest and that CC#’s were encrypted and ‘probably’ not exposed (yeah right).” Have you read this anywhere else? If so (i have too) but it was amazing howmany people had the “middle of next week” “story” read ‘plagerized story’ over the hour immediatly after the post gained traction on twitter and google (3hrs after it was posted) and to boot there was little or no attribution given.

hey stupid, shut the heck up! I’m a mom of 3 with a hubby, i do plenty with my day! I didn’t spent $300+ on a system with online capabilities to not play online. I just paid $15 dollars for extra multiplayer map packs i can’t play, after shelling out $60 for the game. I have been playing sony systems since the ps1 and am not a wet behind the ears kid. I like to play with my girlfriends at night when my kids are in bed. Maybe i should do drugs or be a drunk instead hunh? I live in the country in the middle of nowhere, i don’t live in the city where there is lots to do at night. You spouting crap about the online gamers is just that crap. We don’t all live in the city, and where i live it’s still in the 30′s at night, and rainy. Once again, you are an ignorant moron who needs to f-off. You no nothing about why people are upset about not being able to online game, how i choose to spend my time is my business and the last thing i need is some young idiot telling me i should find something “worthwhile” to do with my day. how many kids do you have stupid- i play to relax and have some fun with some of my girlfriends – so sodd off

      • Bigb

Heck ya nowbella! i get you. i’ve got 5 kids of my own and it seems gaming is the only break from chaos we get. i either play alone or with my children so it’s not only great chillax time but as well as family time. and yes i can copy music and movies and give them to my friends and it’s legal. however, you are not allowed to do it through the internet. I’ve always found this a retarded rule seems how i can share pictures that say property of and do not duplicate in any manner i want.

  • A_Dog

That can’t be true for several reasons,

There is no store on ps3 devnet , also if devnet was the issue why not suspend that rather that the consumer network…..? They are completely separate.

My money is on a big foul up from within Sony itself, possible espionage by some who knows how to cause this kind of downtime,

If it was the rebug exploit, affecting just devnet, they would not bring down consumer net In such a big week for ps3 games….

I work in games industry and devnet is working now, but to sign in you must be on 3.60 fw. Or it won’t work.

Sony also released ‘voice responder’ sdk today with no mention of devnet problems…

I think we are yet to see the cause of this outage……

Then I saw that PSN was undergoing maintenance then I thought hum…..No big deal…I’ll cut the lawn or find something else to do constructive. My games and system aren’t going any where so why get bent all out of shape? I am sure Sony will not allow this to be down indefinetley…..seriously think about it. Let Sony take the time to get things sorted out and like you other gamers, like myself, do something else. Once they do get things sorted out I am sure they will have better software to prevent this from happening again. Just take a break, breath, and quit bitching about it.

This is what copyright does, it makes people paranoid. Makes them lose their minds, afraid that what they’ll think of could already have been done. Or they’ll be taken to court if something happens regarding with “intellectual property”.

    Such a disease.

  • Anonymous

I can verify that Anonymous did not do this, they will never take credit for something they did not do.

    • Scary Devil Monastery

      “They”?

Anonymous isn’t one group. Anyone identifying themselves under an anonymous nickname is as good as a card-carrying member already. There is no form of leadership and no other real organization than more or less spontaneously generated IRC channels.

Generally speaking the only common denominator you can place on “them” is that they have a strong liberal inclination and are relatively savvy when it comes to IT.

The sony network hack, if what we’ve read so far is true, looks more like an organized attempt at gaining access in preparation of identity theft. That points more towards specifically criminal intent – not hacktivism.

      • Anonymous

        Yes They.

There are often focal points in Anonymous, the whole idea behind releasing statements made in collaboration as Anon does is to express in media outlets a facet of common interest (so I feel no need to hesitate to identify the entity as a them), you can argue semantics if you want, I’m down. I could be more specific in saying “They, apart”, there’s no need to fuss about a dichotomy that barely exists.

Your second paragraph for instance, there’s no reason we shouldn’t be able to communicate or classify a group of individuals when the majority of their principles and practices are largely definable.

Anon’s first attempt to shut Sony down failed because there wasn’t nearly enough support for it, and the group was fairly split. Was just clarifying, this simply wasn’t anon.

        Concur.

If there is one thing anonops can’t do it is keeping a running op a secret. The whole idea of the “movement” is to let everyone who wants to load a LOIC/HOIC do so. For the lulz or whatever other motivation floats your boat.

When did I write anything about keeping secrets, how is your response relevant?

        • Scary Devil Monastery

To underscore your original statement for the rest of the readership, mainly. There are too many people out there who think of “anonymous” as some sort of supra-organized black hat company.

  • FailOverflow FTW

This article is wrong!! Sony pulled their network down on purpose. Feel free to read the various sources.

Sony built an insecure network that put all users personal information at risk. This included Credit Card numbers and other personal information being sent in plain text during certain exchanges of information. It would seem that Sony fears that some or ALL of this data has been compromised and has pulled their network to do a full analysis of how much data has been stolen.

They are building a new network from ground up due to the complete and utter failure of the first system.

A warning to anyone who uses PSN, use fake names ect. never use credit cards, instead use pre-paid PSN cards.

  • knux

Really guys? Cmon already… Reporting on the outage in terms of someone hacking the network is one thing, but wild speculation that holds absolutely no merit… You’re getting as bad as Kotaku (ya know, the site you got the idea for this article from) on reporting this shit.

Well, this is epic. If they weren’t so damn worried about preventing piracy but instead by offering nice content and games for reasonable prices this might have been avoided. Work against your customers and they’ll work against you.

Sony deserved every bit of this. And as pointed before, nice job in becoming the internetz laughing stock.

    • http://modmyi.com/forums/iphone-4-new-skins-themes-launches/740147-neurotech-hd.html#post5637502 Jay

Why does Sony “deserve” this? Because they worry about piracy? Because they trade games for money? Grow up.

      • Ninja

Nop, because of several disgusting market practices. I could say the same about many other companies. I can’t recall typing anything that condemns trading games for money. And worrying about piracy is ok but not dealing with it the way they are doing now. Harms the legit customer. I actually ran from bds because of those firmware updates to implement new annoying DRM measures and so on.

And mind you, I have a modded PS2 and wow, I buy original games for it.

        Grow some brains.

      • Scary Devil Monastery

Because they think it’s a fair trade to drop a hundred legitimate customers if it means they inconvenience a single pirate?

Because they removed several key aspects of the console they sold AFTER they had already begun selling it?
Because they decided to screw over and destroy the computers of a few thousand perfectly legitimate customers as an experiment in rootkit design?

…and so on. Packaging a product in such a way as to protect your own merchandise is fine. Packaging your product with hidden malware which wrecks the functionality of another person’s property is not.

    • Ninja

Yeah, this type of hack is bad indeed. And what happened to PSN through the exploit is bad indeed. But I’m totally for jailbreaking.

Ya, right, the stupid people like you would like to make smartness illegal. I can see where your motivation is coming from but it is not going to work. . .

      Sorry.

      • Ninja

You are mistaking smartness for dishonesty. Using fake cc numbers or using features that improve your performance (ie: 100% headshot hacks) is dishonest and actually pitiful. Hacking a console to be able to play the games and avoid wasting money in crappy titles is smartness.

You are a fucking moron. Don’t drag us hackers into this identity theft / network penetration bullshit. Hackers are the reason you have access to jailbroken iphones with awesome applications. Hackers are the reason you have that sweet alternative firmware that makes your Linksys WRT54G so awesome with so many great features that aren’t provided out of the box. Hackers are the reason you have Linux and BitTorrent and most of your favorite web sites and services.

Hacking is a fundamental skill necessary to all professionals in the development field.

      http://www.catb.org/jargon/html/H/hacker.html

  • Joecool1078

One if there were no hackers or stealing none of this would’ve happened. Two there are good programmers and anti-hacker hackers. Three people have to stop pointing fingers and false accusations cause this situation just proves that people are bound by social networking. There is nothing wrong with it, but we all must get ourselves in check…

    • Nom

You don’t even remotely understand what the definition of “hacker” or “hacking” is.

      • Scary Devil Monastery

No, and he doesn’t realize that what he’s arguing for is that bank vaults made of cotton candy would be safe enough if there just weren’t any smart or competent people around.

Bugs me well, that does. It’s always up to the company to protect their client data. If a criminal can gain access to that data by walking straight in then the fact that a crime has been committed doesn’t absolve, in this case Sony, from being shoddy in protecting the information for which they are legally obliged to guarantee security.

  • Phishy

Wow. Unsubstantiated claims abound when it comes to this. As anyone with technical knowledge would know, there’s no way this is a simple DoS attack. This is something much bigger and as Sony said THEY took the network down, not the attack, THEY took it down to secure it better.

If anything I hope this will make sony think twice about offline games tied to PSN accounts. That’s the real pain in the butt, the games own that I can’t play, even single player.

I think it’s funny, sony gives you a free network for gaming and demos, you can purchase pretty awesome games from there for usually under 10$, and the rest of their games (disc based) are on par with Pc and Xbox games, yet Sony are big bad crooks?

Are you honestly telling me all of this is about the remove other os feature? Ok, fine, all you phat ps3 owners (my phat one died) are entitled to the custom firmware that enables that feature. Slim owners? Your console never had that feature so you have no leg to stand on.

Sony is in the wrong for stopping people from stealing their games, hacking their profile trophies, and cheating in online games? you’re all idiots then, plain and simple. I come from the generation that grew up SHARING on BBSs and IRC and the mentality you morons have is startling. Sony is evil for trying to stop people from stealing their games and cheating against me online? Good, I’m glad they are evil.

I personally think Sony should pay out, oh, lets say 10$ in psn credits, to every single owner of a PHAT ps3 that actually had the “otherOS” feature. Then the rest of you “gimme gimme for free” dipshits can just shutup about evil sony.

Geohot is a dick that forced sony into constant security updates. He hacked the console (totally had the right to IMO) but then went beyond, he showed others how to bypass the security knowing exactly what they would do with that access. You know it, i know it, George knows it, Sony knows it.

George got off easy, he could have done some time over this, a slap on the wrist is all he got.

you want to be angry? Be angry at geohot, any legit ps3 owner has every reason to hate this douche right now because all of this CRAP is because of him.

and before you start whining, go read the license you agreed to the terms of when using your console, you can do whatever you want to the hardware, but you can’t reverse engineer it, or the firmware, then release it into the wild, or in some cases sell hardware cracking devices (jailbreak dongle)

It’s funny, we’ll never get copyright reforms, fair digital laws, or any of those rights, because of morons like you guys, dirty whiny thieves with entitlement complexes.

    • Ninja

wow, great impersonation of a pro-copyright moron with the idiotic stealing speech… wait, it was an impersonation, wasn’t it?

[troll feed] I don’t want PSN shit. I wanted to get my hands on a PS3 for a few titles and I couldn’t care less for PSN (much like I couldn’t care less about Xbl on my modded X360 that now runs stunning 10 official releases even though it was MODDED from the beginning.. filthy pirate I am huh?). But then I have to go online because the game won’t run without PSN? Thanks but no thanks, hope a hundred thousand of Geo guys pop up and split PS3 open for all. [/troll feed]

So what you are saying is that if a bank has shoddy security, piss-poor service and can’t be trusted with your business, then if something happens it’s all totally the fault of the guy who pointed it out?

I’d really hate living in your world. Good thing it only exists inside your head.

      pfuh :-). Sharing is everything:-).
They “steal” from sony, not from home users.
And downloading content without paying for it on the playstation network? owww thowe lawbreakers.. you don’t like them? Then don’t be one yourself !! (ok, you don’t grab free things from PSN, but you HAVE mp3′s .. you prob stream/download movies, you use torrents with prob illigal/copied content).

So whats the difference? I’ll tell you.. there is none. Stealing from warner brothers, disney, microsoft or sony is all the same:-). So don’t go being angry on for ex. Geohot becouse you’re a playstation fan… thats hypocrite. Get angry about every pirate (prob yourself included) and then you’re beeing fair :-). Before that.. don’t judge others:-). Everything starts with yourself after all ;-)

P.S I don’t care a bit for this incident :-). I actually like free content:p (to bad I don’t have enough money for consoles:p. Have a chipped Wii dough:p.). But before ppl respond impolite. I understand the fuss.. and I can imagine some ppl think legal is better.. and more fair and i respect that. But then don’t be a hypocrite ;-).

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Don-Dilly/1624894683 Don Dilly

It was Sony that started this arms race. Had they left the PS3 as a semi open games system withe the ‘otherOS’ functionality most hackers would have just used the system as a secondary PC.

People should want to buy a games console due to the fact can run on lowly TV, it is a recognised stable games platform with uniform hardware allowing games developers to optimise their games to play on that platform rather than having to worry like with the PC of having people running almost infinite PC configurations. Those are the benefits most gamers naively buy in to. With such a platform, Sony could make a handsome profit.

With older cartridge based platforms, console manufacturers got used to selling licenses to develop for their console and restricted what code ran owing to the fact the games were loaded from proprietary cartridges and games were accepted to be expensive owing to the cost of the physical cartridges.

Sony (and microsoft) got greedy and have artificially continued the developer lockout and locked down their platforms even through the last few generations of consoles have used industry standard storage (CD/DVD/bluray) The greed hasnt stopped there as they have effectively tried creating a walled garden in place of the internet profiting from licensing deals from content providers such as lovefilm rather than giving people real choice.

Theyve bought all the hacking on themselves, especially after withdrawal of otherOS.

What people expect from a console these days is effectively a budget PC with gaming abilities. They could easily open up developement for the console and should replace restrictive licensing with a software certification program whereby any uncertified software would be disabled via a ‘safe mode’ while you are logged on to the PSN

The piracy issue is totally bogus. The real issue is Sony wanting to protect its revenue streams gained through restrictive practices and it looks increasingly like if the law wont do anything about such practices, hackers will.

    • Nowbella

wow, you are seriously delusional. My question to you is this, who the hell do you think you are? And what planet did you come from? I’m American and i’m all about the freedoms our country is founded on, especially the freedom to tell you to shut the hell up you stupid hobnocker. Did you design the ps3 or ANY of the software that goes with it? How about designing and setting up the psn? NO? well why the bloody hell should YOU have a say on how they want THEIR system and THEIR network used? If you are unhappy with the way sony runs their network don’t buy one and don’t use psn. No one is holding a gun to your head forcing you to do it. It states in the fine print that in order to use psn you agree they can change whatever they want whenever they want. it’s THEIR software and THEIR system. You and the rest of the lazy hackers should go build your own, oh that’s right, not smart enough to do that, too bad. much easier to steal or mod someone else’s hard work. Hackers are no better than any other theif. The only thing they’ve done is screw over the little guy/gal who wants to game online with their friends and have fun. i don’t want to play the hacked version of a game, with superpowers, hackers ruined mw2, and are trying to ruin blackops the same way. Apparently their parents did a crappy job in teaching them right from wrong, stealing is never right.

Are you delusional or just trolling? No one has been “stealing” anything when it comes to this particular case.

And i very much doubt you are american either if you can’t get through your head something as elementary as the concept of “Personal Property”.

If you bought it, you own it. Everything else is called a “lease”.

Something to which your supreme court agrees when it comes to jailbreaking and/or hacking consoles as an unescapable consequence of abiding by the general rules in that piece of paper which starts with “We the people…”.

You keep going on and on about what hackers should and should not do with the property they bought. Unfortunately the foremost experts on constitutional law do not agree with your interpretation.

      • Ninja

Wow, you sounded like an improved (in the negative sense) Measoned Rind/Sherboiled/Jack/NeoDumbs. And I see you caused some hard discussion above this. At least you win at trolling lol

Actually, there’s a problem here. There are titles that will only be released for PS3. Same with X360. If I could I’d buy God of War III for X360. But then again it’d be composed of several DVDs because M$ is incompetent and hasn’t implemented blu-ray on X360. But then from what you say I shouldn’t go and use Sony stuff… (infinite loop). It’s not like you can ditch one for the other.

Lack of competition, that’s the problem. So yeah, let’s level up the situation with hacking.

      • Nom

Shut the fuck up you stupid hobnocker. Go breed some more or something.

    • Bastyproduce

Copyright reform is needed. If all works up til 5 years ago are HEAVILY protected, and anythign else is free. Then the focus on new content; movies, music mainly, will be understandably less intense. It’s copyrights that keep music like The Beetles, Ledzepplin and Metalica and movies like HappyGilmore, Caddyshack and Natural Born Killers (or insert any of the thousands of movie/music titles there that are great but more than 5 years old) that keep competition severely stiff for new artists/productions not only by diluting the market by lumping these together on shelves, but also on Download sites. Seperate old material from new material, to make the Production market less stagnant and narrow the focus for copyright infringment; material produced within the last 5 years.

Makes me glad to own a Wii.

Nonetheless, I feel a certain degree of sadness for PS3 owners. Not because of this minor network outage (there’s more to gaming than going online), but because of what Sony had done to them – by removing PS2 backward compatibility, removing the OtherOS option, etc… Add to that the fact that few games use the PS3′s capabilities to the full, and you can’t help but feel that Playstation owners got the shortest straw in this generation.

But let’s give Sony credit where credit is due: they removed region restrictions on the PS3. How I wish Nintendo would do the same for its consoles.

    • Ninja

That’s why you can always homebrew ;)

    • Ninja

And while I’m at it, I should also recognized that this region thing was the best thing Sony has done in its recent history.

    • Whatever

There was once a C64. When it came out it didn’t seem to be able to do much in graphics and sound. The programs looked like VIC20 programming. After 10 years or so it was playing music (even sampled sound) and had much better graphics because more and more potential of the machine was discovered. This happens with many devices.

The Sony PS3 however must be the first device that is taking away functionality as time passes. It goes backwards. The owners of a PS3 already lost at least 3 parts of the device (as indefinetally might be forever).

What will be next ? Media playing disabled ? Harddisk lock ? ports disabled ? Entering a code every 5 minutes of play ? Calling Sony every month to activate the PS3 ? Live tracking of PS3 usage ?

I am “relieved” that i don’t have or like any consoles to have pieces of the device “stolen” (i won’t say happy because it is sad for the people having a PS3).

I wonder if there are no issues possible with the Wii or Xbox too in future. The PC is also in danger with “trusted computing”.

We survived before Sony Gaming was even a breath in the wInd. Nothing has changed, we will survive again. Gaming is not the only life you have, at least i hope not. Outside Sports, Running, Surfing, Fishing, Parasailing, Skydiving, Rock Climbing, Swimming, Spend more time with Friends & Family, Going out to a Nightclub & Tearing it up, Get on your Harley ride Route 66 or even just a long country road ride. Sony has been going down hill for years, you just did not know this. As far as Hackers, they have no life, they are sick minded, most are liars, hide in a shadow of fotgotten thoughts. Me I believe that “When you arise in the morning, give thanks for the morning light, for your life and strength. Give thanks for your food, and the joy of living. If you see no reason for giving thanks, the fault lies with yourself…” Thats my belief, my life I have lived forever, and will continue. If Sony comes back on line, It is a blessing to them, if not, it could be a blessing to you. Life goes on. And Sony, as big as they are, should Re-Call ALL PS3′s, refund ALL of what was paid according to the Bar Codes, Even Games,Controllers, ect… Take the loss as a Thruthful Company would do, let it lye, and don’t look back. Start over on a new System if be it, if not, They still make enough Merhcandise, they won’t take much of a cut. BUT, if Sony is being untrthful, as in , maybe, The Recession or maye even thinking of Bankruptcy, then be honest to all, quit hiding the truth. RECALL-RECALL-RECALL, thats the best solution, problem solved, until you get it together. STOP LYING, you have did it for years, blaming others for your own faults. The Truth is the best policy. No, actually i support the hack because it’s a perfectly legal way to modify what runs on your own damn property. Those “terms and conditions” have been CLEARLY rejected by the supreme court once when it decided to toss Apple’s anti-jailbreak suit out. Read up just a bit on what laws apply to system software before you embarrass yourself any further.

So unless you think the user manual overrides the supreme court…shut the fuck up and grow up.

Are you stupid?!?!? NO WHERE in that blog post by PSN did they say there were offline idefinatly. You fucking stupid shmuck!

    • Blackfootreigns

It does say this, Yesterday they made another announcement, informing their user base that the whole system will be offline INDEFINITLEY. No further information from Sony but there is a man who thinks he knows what causing the extended downtime. Can;t get no more clearer that that. Re-Called their first sytems due to malefuntions, Re-Call all you Slanteyes made, including games, controllers, misc. bs, give all money back through retailers or whereever folks bought them from, no holds barred. Then when you find truth within yourself, & tell the truth , ( YOU DON”T KNOW WHAT THE HELL IS REALLY WRONG ) Fix the problem, even if you have to send it to the U.S.A. ( we seem to fix all other countries problems ) Then put it back out for sale at same price. Be Honest, or is that in your Teachings.

My spidey senses say that this is some kind of karmic vengance for Sony’s past unsporting behaviours.

Either that or the ‘hack’ is a smokescreen for something waaaaaaaaaaay more hilarious….

  • Xtme2005

Wow a lot of cunt face foreigners potty mouths on TF its pretty hysterical ….. most are from the U.K or some scummy place ….you all feel so powerfull don’t you! :P

    • Paul

scummy place? WOW, such a powerful comment. Oh yeah, it’s powerful, not powerfull, learn to spell

77 Million accounts hacked. Is this a complete fuckup or is this just spin? My bullshit meter is going off, sounds like a convenient excuse so that Sony don’t have to shell out for the REBUG leech fest they created. Funny thing is the minute a major corporation knows it could be liable for criminal damages, they go down the path of calling themselves a bunch of pinheads to get off lightly. Either way the shitz has hit the fan. If the REBUG issue has been fixed, we know the real reason for the takedown. If it hasn’t we know they’re just down right incompetent.

for tghe hack codes go to http://www.redtube.com and its the first link :)

  • Paul

These bloody big corporations should start taking more care with peoples sensitive information. It is on their heads that the information was stolen, not the hackers. I don’t have a PS3 or PSN, but i do have an XBOx 360 with XBOX live and i don’t buy anything off it with a credit card, i do have one, but there are too many companies, governments(lost laptops) losing our info for me to trust them. A company that Play.com use to keep sensitive information was hacked not so long ago, i got an email telling me to be careful of scams, it’s getting ridiculous. KEEP OUR INFORMATION SAFE YOU FECKERS OR YOU LOSE BUSINESS!!

This applies to games as well. With the travesty of age-old nintendo and atary games being sealed off from the public, it casts a negative light on recent game worth. The attitude of “well if we can’t play sony games free from 1985, why shouldn’t we download them free in 2011?” Either way of thinking is wrong. Old games SHOULD be available for free, and new games SHOULDN’T be downloaded for free. 5 years is a good grace period for ANY copyrightable content.

Sony pulled a heavy handed approach to what we do with our own electronics, and sicks teams of highly paid lawyers(why don’t I buy Sony products again?) on the internet community at large for mere interest in their devices(GeoHot, CFWs). Sony’s desire to protect their IP is costing the rest of us our civil liberties in the process, whether you want to admit it or not.

Sony withholds information about data breaches containing highly sensitive personal material. Sorry, the “they didn’t know yet” speech doesn’t cut it – ignorance is not an excuse, many courts of law have proven this fact in the past.

Did you expect the underground internet communities to not collaborate to show Sony who runs game on the internet today? We’re talking about hacking communities that are decades old, who have been collaborating on smaller “projects” similar to these for literally decades – longer than most who are reading this article have been alive. I see a lot of negative comments regarding pre-pubescent pissed off children responsible for this, etc etc. The bottom line is Sony barked up the wrong tree. Clearly this high profile attack has proven that the individuals responsible are willing to keep quiet and not take credit, believe it or not this is very difficult to do when something like this would earn so much credit in the community. These individuals are skilled and will likely remain anonymous forever.

Remember, those responsible for this attack have knowledge, time, and a common goal, which far exceeds the power of even huge financially successful companies like Sony. It has, and always will remain, the responsibility of companies like Sony to protect personal data, this is not a “blame the hackers” scenario, this is a blame Sony scenario.

We can sit and talk all day about hackers, criminals, etc etc, but the bottom line is that Sony showed its disregard to the community time and time again, and this time the community showed its disregard right back. The only difference is it cost Sony to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars to learn this lesson, and lets not even try to quantify the financial ripple effect that will happen as a result, with that, this lesson easily reaches into the billions of dollars in damages.

Internet freedom fighters have spoken, and they are angry with Sony. It’s time Sony starts to listen to consumers and starts playing fair.

    • Paul

Good comment ‘embrace change’, i totally agree with you. Protecting customer information should be the utmost priority for any company, passing the blame onto hackers is not going to cut it.

These guys are skilled at what they do, i wouldn’t know where to start. I’m not condoning it, but we live in the digital age and this sort of thing is going to happen and Sony have now paid the price.

  • Nom

All these fucking ignorant twats comment about “hackers”. Listen, if it wasn’t for hackers learning to do things with items they owned that the items were not initially intended to do, you wouldn’t have personal fucking computers and laptops and any other device sitting around your house today. How do you think the first real PC came about (Apple)? How do you think the OS that Microsoft bought off the dude hacking shit together in his spare time came about? How do you think all of the hardware before that came about? How do you think a lot of pinball machines continue to function in 2011 when the last pinball maker shut down years ago?
