Radiohead Charity Pay-What-You-Want DVD On BitTorrent

In January 2010, in response to the emerging tragedy from the earthquake in Haiti, Radiohead performed before a limited audience at a charity concert in the United States. Since that performance, footage of the event has been painstakingly compiled by fans and now a twin DVD has been released, endorsed by the band. All proceeds are going to charity and the fastest way of acquiring it? BitTorrent of course.

haitiIn 2007, UK band Radiohead went against the grain by offering their latest album to the masses via the Internet in a pay-what-you-want model. Their seventh studio album, combined physical and digital sales went on to break the 3 million copy barrier.

Now the band are back supporting a similar but completely altruistic model, this time for a DVD. In January 2010, Radiohead performed at the Haiti Relief concert at the Henry Ford theater in Los Angeles and the event was filmed and its audio recorded, not by the band or show organizers, but by their fans.

Understandably, that footage went on to be scattered far and wide but thanks to the work of three fans – inez, formengr, andrea – the video and audio has been painstakingly collated to make a two DVD set of the event, which was limited on the day to just 1,400 people present. The trio then decided to make the work available on the Internet for the masses, but supported by a great idea to help those in need.

“It was a SPECIAL show with a SPECIAL purpose – to raise badly needed funds for those who lived through the devastation. And it seemed only appropriate that the DVD should carry on some of these goals,” inez explains.

So plan in hand, inez approached Radiohead for their approval and to find out which charity they would like donations to go to. The band chose Oxfam to handle donations on behalf of Haiti.

Normally with a charity product a whole bunch of funds would go to producing a physical product and then getting it delivered all over the world, but with the magic of BitTorrent none of that is necessary. In fact, even the online distribution costs come to almost nothing meaning that every penny goes in the right direction.

Inez has chosen a handful of trackers to distribute the DVD including the signup only Zombtracker and the one the majority of BitTorrent users will recognize, KickassTorrents.

The official Oxfam donation link can be found here and a copy of the full video can be seen on YouTube, linked below.

Please download and give generously.

Pay-What-You-Want and BitTorrent might just happen to become the media distribution methods of the decade. And big pros to Radiohead for doing charity!

Yeh, right, I’m not gonna pay for crappy cam footage and certainly not for emo crap from radiohead. Good initiative, certainly, but not worth the money.

  • anon

Not worth the money? It’s pay want you want via donation to help a charity you fucking tool. It is no wonder people think pirates are all about taking and not giving back.

Or if you weren’t such a tight c*nt, you could look at it as a nice way to donate money to a good cause, with the added bonus of some crappy cam footage and emo crap from radiohead.

    No 6…

Shut up. what have you accomplished compared to them? You are nothing mate… they have sold more records than what your heart has beaten till now… waste of space.

Lol at the kid calling Radiohead emo crap. Someone needs to do a bit of research before they post.

Anyway, i sent them 5 dollars and prolly wont get the vid, cause im not that big a fan of radiohead, but this way of collecting donations is probably the most efficient i’ve ever seen.

Thanks for the opportunity, and amazingly big props to inez, formengr and andrea for compiling this dvd.

Lol McAfee virus warning. Grow up!

Kids you do not EVEN need antivirus. It’s a marketing hoax. It slows your PC down, it will not pick up new viruses anyway and it will give you false positives all the time.

Just keep a reasonably up to date clone of your hard drive, and put your user directory on another drive. All data apart from the OS should be on other drives too.

You might get a virus every 2 years or so, if you have let your guard down and done something clumsy (run a dodgy exe file).

Then you simply swap over to the backup drive and start using the first one as backup instead. This system has worked for me for 10 years.

    For cloning discs, use Acronis.

@20: To be fair, this sounds like a marketing hoax to get me to buy extra hard drives and a copy of Acronis. If antivirus is slowing down your PC, your PC must have dreadful specs.

  • Cordelia

Don’t use Acronis then, or Pirate it, I don’t care. Or waste your money on unnecessary virus protection if you want.

I am telling you, antivirus is a hoax. Anyone who knows what he’s doing can manage fine without it.

    @Cordelia

    Uh… What the hell?

If you use Windows(especially the security fails known as XP, Vista, and 7) then you absolutely do need antivirus. What you don’t need is garbage by the likes of Norton or McAfee. Free antivirus will do the trick and it won’t cripple your system.

If you don’t run Windows, then… Okay, yeah. Antivirus is pretty much a hoax. But only then.

Now, where oh where are the paid MAFIAA trolls? Maybe the way this article points out how Radiohead sold 3 million copies of an album they GAVE AWAY FOR FREE is sapping their will to write their usual “pirates never buy anything! if everything is free then artists will starve and the whole entertainment idustry will collapse!” propaganda?

C’mon, trolls! Tell us how this charity DVD will fail just like In Rainbows did(NOT!) because we’re all “entitled freeloaders” and “cheapskates”!

    I dare you.

BitTorrent distribution works well when the data being shared in the torrent is popular. Once the data becomes unpopular, BitTorrent becomes a hinderance to those who want to get the data in a reasonable amount of time.

I suggest uploading a copy of the data to the Internet Archive — http://www.archive.org/ — for long-term, cost-free, traditional storage and distribution.

Might as well disable commenting on this one, I dont foresee it ending on a positive note. They’ve already called them Emo and threw out Marxist quotes.
And no, a .BUP file cant be a virus. Its simply a backup of an .IFO file.

  • stinkpipe

@27 yes, disable comments, censor our views, 1984, you should work for the government?, or perhaps you do. any file can contain good or bad information

I work for Oxfam and no we are NOT a scam, let me guess you’re one of the to$$ers that goes into Oxfam shops wearing clean decent clothes after eating in Mcdonalds, complains about the prices and then asks for a discount, I’d love to dump you somewhere like sierra leone, let you get your hands and feet hacked off and then see if you still come out with such offensive comments, w*nker

Radiohead is awesome. I’m giving as much as I can, which isn’t much, but I wouldn’t have given anything if this were a $50 DVD.

  • Whatever

    @30 ssna
The last word was really needed in convincing everyone that it is a civilized organisation. Also #11 was a GENERAL comment about charity and not oxfam.

And #11 does somehow have a point as money to charity usually gets wasted on expensive buildings, commercials and expensive CEO’s including their dinners. In the Netherlands recently it became known that a certain CEO of “charity” makes more than 150000 euros. I am sure there are enough poor people who would take the position for 1/10 of it. This CEO did NOT even want to lower his wage or is even ashamed of it!!.

My opinion is that people need to be carefull and verify any organization they plan to give money to.

@36 Why don’t you see the positive side of it, if it works, more stuff will be offered that way.

You just got a free DVD and you manage to blame their intentions.

What they do is asking you to be charitable to them.
