With 2011 nearing its end, today we begin our annual look at the most-pirated entertainment titles across various categories, starting with TV-shows. Dexter comes out on top this year, followed by HBO’s debut series Game of Thrones. Although the years of exponential growth in download numbers have passed, episodes of the top TV-shows are still shared among millions of people.

dexter With 3,620,000 downloads per single episode, Dexter has the honor of becoming the most pirated TV-show of the year.

Despite the fact that Dexter and runner-up Game of Thrones have more downloads than television viewers in the US, the overall number of TV-show downloads is leveling off.

The percentage of TV-show downloaders, from the US in particular, has steadily declined in recent years. This is in part thanks to alternative viewing options such as Hulu and Netflix. In other regions, such as Australia and Europe, the demand for US TV-shows remains strong.

Outside the US fans sometimes have to wait endlessly before their favorite show airs on TV in their own country. Many of them are simply not that patient or willing to torture themselves, and turn to BitTorrent in desperation.

The above suggests that availability is one of the key solutions to decreased TV piracy, and this was confirmed earlier this year. When Fox decided to delay the airing of new episodes on Hulu in August, many former Hulu users turned to BitTorrent where the number of US downloads more than doubled.

In common with many branches of the entertainment industry, the challenge for TV companies is to come up with a business model that allows users to consume what they want at any given time, without losing revenue in the process. When that puzzle is solved worldwide the number of unauthorized downloads will be pretty much insignificant.

Below we have compiled a list of the most downloaded TV-shows (single episode) of 2011, together with the viewer average for TV in the US. The data for the top 10 is collected by TorrentFreak from several sources, including reports from all public BitTorrent trackers.

    If Australia lifts up their game on TV channels and shows, people would pirate less and less because the TV shows are more accessible to the people who would like to watch the said show.
    
    Just so you know, I’m from Australia and I’m sick of the fact that free-to-air sucks shit and only offers HIMYM and Big Bang Theory is the only good shows they offer and the rest are the same repetitive drama.
    
    I love to hate Foxtel as well. Foxtel just sucks ass.
    
    I would not pirate if that particular show was available to me legally earlier honestly and probably people would pirate less and less.

  sorry to break it to you but The Big Bang Theory is one of the best shows to hit tv in a long time great comedy show. Terra Nova is not to bad, and well House When i get around to it i will watch it from the beginning, the episodes i have seen i liked most of them. Game of Thrones I might take a peek at. :)

There are other great shows on now, too–Boardwalk Empire comes to mind. I don’t watch TBBT, but Breaking bad is great.

      Did you mean Stargate instead of Star Trek? The Star Trek story well was getting pretty dry. The SGU was still tapping and was sacrificed due to MGM’s financial woes. As with Firefly, the Western Sci-Fi was to fringe for many mainstreamers – which was a shame. The problem TV shows have in Canada is that many series First Run rights are bought by the Movie Channel so you can view it online or buy it (or download it) before you can legally watch it with out paying a premium. This of course only encourages piracy and undermines the profitability of tv shows which in the case of Sci-Fi have extremely large special effects and make-up budgets. The problem with listening to 12 year olds is they want everything and think it should be just given to them.

    The CopyWrong Cartel only uses TV shows as an investment, and its current business model is failing due to a lack of adaptability to new tech (ie the internet and filesharing for no cash, no profit and no tangible gain by the end user).
    
    Since BitTorrent and it’s users can distribute these ‘products’ so easily Worldwide, it makes no sense to say that mere numbers is the principle reason for producers failing to distribute Worldwide.
    
    The number of non-US downloaders clearly indicates that those producers are failing to provide customers with what they want. That means the business model needs to change to meet that demand.
    
    Yet the producers FAIL to do so, and stick to their stupid model of ‘testing the local water first’ before going Wordlwide = freakin’ DUMMIES = Epic FAIL.

The biggest revelation here is that Dexter and Game of Thrones both have more Internet downloaders than they do US TV viewers. That may make mainstream news provided these two figures are related but then they may just say this is just the extent of piracy these days.

This gives me a flashback to when a UK satellite magazine about 12 years ago asked their readers their favourite foreign TV station. The Nordic FilmNet service were not happy to win the award seeing that they were an encrypted premium subscription movie service for another country with an official zero UK subscribers… all pirates.

Then Canal+ not long following ate them up and the rest is history.

80$ or more a month to schedule my time around TV shows where a third of my time is spent watching immersion-breaking, worthless commercials? That’s a joke.

Give me a service where I can watch any episode of any series I want, at any time I want, without commercials and I’ll pay 20$ a month max for it. They can even use my existing internet connection. :)

  I’ve said I’d be willing to pay $40/mth US for it. I told the Comcast rep this exact thing, even with commercials, when I was canceling my cable subscription and going to internet only. She was shocked that I brought it up partly as a moral issue that I couldn’t, in good conscience pay for a service that was really optional in my life where I don’t get to decide what specific channels or shows my money is going to. (Channels like shopping, sports, religious, non-english language) Why should I be supporting products that I don’t want? That was a year ago I dropped my cable TV and my wife and I haven’t missed it.
  
  It is as if they can’t even process the idea and it would be so easy if not for how the licensing of TV content from studios to cable companies gets in the way. Like grawss said, they can even use our connections to do the hosting of content with P2P protocols like bit torrent. Internet based means that they can stop building and supporting buggy, slow, and cumbersome HD set top boxes and converters they also kill companies like TiVO because what is the point of DVR if you had always on access to all the TV you want? And eventually they could just do away with the digital cable signal on the coaxial into the house all together and use that bandwidth for more internet.
  
  But that would make too much sense. It is far easier and more profitable to prosecute people and make it difficult to access content.

    The gain here for iTunes and the musicians is that once you turn lawful you are likely to stay there and buy lawful music directly.
    
    Still this offer may well turn some lawful music buyers into pirates when this is such a tempting offer that they have to pass through the piracy step to get the ultra cheap music. Anyway just keep in mind that this iTunes music match offer does not protect you from infringement claims so download at your own risk.
    
    I will soon browse around to see what are the biggest music packs out there but I should advice you that 25,000 songs is about 122GB of data. If anyone knows of any big packs than advice welcome. You don’t have to download all 25,000 at once when this is a 12 month offer.

I’m not sure how The Big Bang Theory is so popular. I’m the nerdy, 30-something demographic they’re targeting (or at least portraying) and I don’t find it funny. I think because they’re mocking the things I like.
