BitTorrent Sites Show Explosive Growth
Written by Ernesto on March 22, 2008BitTorrent’s popularity is growing every day. Despite efforts from anti-piracy outfits such as the MPAA and IFPI, torrent sites continue to grow traffic wise, and there is no sign that this trend will be brought to a halt anytime soon.
We decided to compile a list of the 25 most popular BitTorrent sites, and see how their (relative) popularity has grown over the past three months. Out of the 25 sites in the list, 21 improved their ranking in Alexa’s list of most popular sites on the Internet.
There are a few changes in the top 10 compared to the list of 2007’s top torrent sites. Mininova is still leading the bunch, but The Pirate Bay is now in second place, in front of isoHunt. Torrentportal and TorrentReactor traded places as well, the sites are now 7th and 9th respectively.
YouTorrent is the only newcomer, and it’s really impressive that the site made it into the top 25 only 2 months after its launch.

Note: Alexa’s data gathering is not perfect. The exact figures may be not be completely accurate, but it is a great tool (especially the traffic rank) to compare sites within the same niche and to get a global impression of traffic shifts over time.

Sooner or later they are just going to have to accept it or face dire consequences. Including but not limited too what happened to media defender.
ha.. yes.. just imagine what those big companies could’ve done with all that money if they weren’t on their witchhunt for downloaders..
ThePirateBay is going to pass Mininova because of their media attention.
Pretty good stuff.
@2
True, they could have used that money for something better than chasing IP addresses.
A few posts back, Isohunt went past TPB, and now TPB is on top. This is almost like the music charts. And, yeah, that money could have gone to other sources, but its not like there are people homeless, starving and dying, eh? I mean those celebrities are losing money! How saddening is that? Doesn’t it drive you to tears to see them have to take money out of their wallets instead of credit cards?
I see torrentspy is down a lot… good, since they took the great news feed of the frontpage, and replaced it with a giant ad block, and they removed all the torrents from their cache.
I attribute the rise of certain torrent sites to the demise of Demonoid
I think we are winning!
Torrent sites are growing? Seriously!?
Slow news day?

It’s still nice to read, despite the fact there is in fact, nothing there to read.
Unless you’re starting out with using bit torrent.
Whatever.
I found it interesting. It’s fine! lol. At anyrate, nice to see all these sites growing and stuff.
I like looktorrent.com
This isn’t really a torrent issue per se, but may effect things in the long run, I just discovered that I can source 100’s of sources in ed2k for certain mp3 files, yet when I attempt to download the files it shows zero sources for the transfer. This may be something Comcast has figured out how to interfere with. It would appear that certain key words in the title of the mp3 file, prevents the emule from finding sources when it tries to download, even if it finds hundreds in a search.
My concern is when will torrents start finding the same problem? For all I know it may already have. I hardly ever download music, so I just discovered this unique effect.
check this too :

True! I check Demonoid every day with a little hope that it will re-appear.
It should look like this:
4. Torrentz.com 231 192 +20%
5._torrents.ru__?___448_+16%
6. BtJunkie.org 689 469 +47%
doesn’t alexa only rank the people that use IE?
“Alexa’s data gathering is not perfect.”
That’s a nice circumlocution for: “They only count the visits of people who use IE and have downloaded the Alexa toolbar”. I’m not sure if i wanted those people visiting my Bittorrent site, if i had one.
Honestly this scares me :( but it might actually help us when we’re attacked by corporate goons and crook politicians.
Also, I am sure most of the people who use Public trackers could careless about p2p and are just a bunch of leeching pigs so I don’t know :/
bleh they aren’t even top 50 yet… hopefully that’ll change soon

andyness, i don’t think so. though it is the fastest loading torrent site, the problem with bay are two: looks and tracker.
1. It looks pre-historic.
2. It doesn’t allow a non-bay tracker( like private tracker torrents) to be uploaded.
That’s why mininova is far far ahead:)
