Demonoid Shows Sign of Life on New .HK Domain

After more than five months of downtime Demonoid’s website is showing signs of life again. Instead of timing out, demonoid.me has started to redirect to a new demonoid.hk domain, displaying a “403 Forbidden” HTTP status after initially showing a “nothing to see here” notice. While Demonoid is not back yet, these recent developments show that there’s activity behind the scenes.

demonoidAfter the popular BitTorrent tracker Demonoid suffered a DDoS and hacker attack July last year, the site’s servers in Ukraine were pulled offline.

Local authorities explained that Interpol asked them to take action as part of an investigation into the site’s alleged owners in Mexico.

In the months that followed the Demonoid team remained silent and the site itself showed absolutely no sign of life, simply timing out. Yesterday, however, something changed.

All of a sudden the Demonoid.me domain started to respond again. Initially it displayed a “nothing to see here” notice, and a few hours later it redirected to a new demonoid.hk domain.

The new Hong Kong domain was registered about a month ago and is currently displaying a “403 Forbidden” HTTP status code. The new site appears to be hosted in Hong Kong as well, where we saw the Demonoid tracker return earlier.

The tracker has gone up and down a few times since then and is currently offline.

demonoid.hk

While there’s absolutely no guarantee that Demonoid will return in the near future the recent developments clearly show that something is going on behind the scenes. The restart of the tracker at a new hosting company, paired with the new domain showing some response, offers hope to those who miss Demonoid dearly.

The last time TorrentFreak heard from the Demonoid admin was September last year. At the time we were told that there is “nothing interesting to report yet.”

“I hope there will be one day, but it might not be soon,” the tech admin added. Perhaps that day is coming closer now?

In many ways the current situation is reminiscent of the downtime Demonoid suffered half a decade ago. During the summer of 2007 the site shut down its servers after receiving legal threats from the CRIA. After being offline for six months the site eventually reappeared in full glory early 2008.

Time will tell whether Demonoid can make a comeback once again.

That and the fact that demonoid basically let anybody in. They were hardly a private tracker.

Demonoid was always a public tracker, just as public as the pirate bay. They only limited signups occasionally for bandwidth reasons and to keep up with modding spam accounts etc, it was never about security or being private. And you never needed to be a member to download the torrents anyway. I don’t know where some people get the idea that demonoid had anything private about it.

        • ServiusTheBear

Semi Private. They only allowed a certain amount of downloads from non members. Plus there Reg days where like once or twice a month. Plus I have to admit there where way better than most private servers I have been and still on. There was certainly no issue on bandwidth issues.

        • ylvali

I have been a forum regular on demonoid since 2002, which any other long time member could confirm. And during these 11 years the word from staff, owner and forum admins have been 100% consistent: demonoid is a PUBLIC tracker, not private, not semi private, public. Some of them got so tired of newbs not understanding this simple fact that they put “demonoid is a public tracker” as their signature. That you sometimes had to wait a few weeks to sign up doesn’t make the site “semi public”, its just a temporary measure to keep things manageable. So anyone ever telling you that there was anything exclusive about demonoid is full shit.

Demonoid is practicing a different form of resistance against the corporate pathogen. Once under attack it go under ground wait few month and reappears with a new configuration and new servers elsewhere. One beneficial effect is to make the “”entertainment”" corporatists look like idiots.

So far it is working well. Way to go Demonoid!

      • a commenter

it’s not practicing anything… there is no “way to go”… they were mass attacked, shut down, and now the lone developer admining the site is having to bust his ass getting things going again, if they even come back.

Try again with something more relevant. Link in question is about commercial use of software. Demonoid is very typically none commercial in nature. Typically speaking, the law in question is clearly aimed as business making use of specialist software, not, the movies/games/etc. Demonoid is used for.

All in all however I find it ironic that a country notorious for producing counterfeit products and shoddy merchandise (real copyright crimes) would want to crack down on the most harmless and pointless form.

Any who, the debacle with Megaupload is likely going to make them wary of sticking their neck out for the US any time soon with the case clearly close to unraveling.

        • Mouseanony

Hong Kong is a haven for “piracy”, “copyright infringement” and “fakes”. It has been going on for decades and a link to some states’ laws will not change that.

        • Pelham123

That’s not in any way a relevant citation.

It is interesting that a seafood processor in Massachusetts sued one in Thaliand and that the use of pirated software was labeled an “unfair business practice,” but I doubt they mean bootlegged MS Office.

They arrested Kim.com there and convicted him.True not the best place to go but I’m afraid there’s no real safe place anywhere. At least will last awhile then may have to move yet again.Time will tell.

New Zealand, bro. The illegal raid and detention of Dotcom happened in New Zealand. Not Hong Kong.

        • DutchGuest

        • Pelham123

They arrested Kim for criminal copyright infringement, not running a torrent site.

In reply to Pelham123,what’s the difference?

        • teenygozer

The Hong Kong conviction had nothing to do with copyright on films or downloading and was an investments and securities thing. From Wikipedia:

Dotcom was subsequently convicted for failing to disclose his shareholding to the Securities and Futures Commission, and was fined 8000 Hong Kong dollars.

    • Guest

      “Hong Kong government”

      “no tolerance for piracy”

Bobmail now totally divorced from reality.

      • bobmail

Since I am a resident here, perhaps you might want accept that I might know more. Yes, there is plenty of piracy and plenty of other issues like that in Hong Kong, but the government is not happy when the world is directly exposed to it. They take fairly drastic action when it comes to this sort of thing.

it’s one of the reasons Kim Dotcom has his companies here, but didn’t have his actual servers or offices anywhere near the place, because he would have been arrested directly.

Reality is right outside my window. I am guessing you haven’t ever been out of your back yard.

        • Who

“They take fairly drastic action when it comes to this sort of thing”

O really? then please explain Y ALL the China trackers are STILL online.

        • ThumbsUpThumbsDown

In respect to your positions on Copyright, the perspective “outside your window” in Hong Kong is no less, or no more authoritative than Guests.

It certainly is not descriptive reality; unless you’re fixated on counting the makes, numbers, weights, colors, of the cars that pass before your window at any microscopic time interval.

The destiny of Copyright Law is NOT being decided on any street corner in Hong Kong.

Does the view from your window inform your understanding of events affecting filesharing and Copyright in New York, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Paris, London, Copenhagen, Brussels, Stockholm, Berlin, or Rome?

I value your point to the extent that it is limited to the observation that the Hong Kong Government is specificly repressive; but, so what? All the governments mentioned above are repressive in respect to Copyright. Some more; some less, than Hong Kong.
They all govern within a wider universe of filesharing that is expanding massively.

The meaningfull question is whether any, or all, of these Governments can or should repress their populations enough to enforce compliance with existing Copyright Laws as presently constituted.

Answer: If they could’ve, they would’ve; but, they couldn’t, so they haven’t.

          Why?

Because there IS no moral or logical public proffer with which to justify or explain the Copyright Argument that a perpetual
Corporate Domain in all Human Intellectual Property is socially equitable, economicly efficient, or politically acceptable public policy.

Corporate Copyright Holders rarely try to justify their proffer of a Perpetual Corporate Domain in Intellectual Property. The very Idea is such a disgrace, that it can hardly be expressed; much less supported in any public forum.

          The people know.

To repeat eternally that the government will coerce is beside the point.

The people know; and the more they are coerced, the more vehemently they know; and, the more vehemently they are coerced, the more vehemently they hold those with official political and corporate power accountable.

Would you like a better window from which to understand the problem?

You can get there easily from Hong Kong.

Check out the Pirates Bay, and ask yourself the real metaphorical meaning of One Billion page views per month.

Just shut up, you sound old and stupid.

        • icec0ld

Sorry, but the more I read on Hong Kong the more I find it harder to think that it would honestly crack down on piracy. It has a pile of other issues deal with so as far an anti piracy behaviors go, they’re better off dealing with pirates actually involving themselves in profit. If you actually live in Hong Kong you’re either deluded or blind to the situation.

The Kim Dotcom point brought up is rather hilarious. When the entire case is dismissed Hong Kong is likely to be caught in the cross fire too and likely to cop the bill for illegally seized property.

        • Anon

I respect this post up to a point, but you have proven over and over that reality is nowhere near your window.

        • Whatever

          @blobmail

I did mention “one to remember” last time when you were opposed to downloading unbuyable audiobooks which was a solution for a dyslectic person.

You were whining about that nobody is allowed to choose which laws to follow in the last article about Sweden.

You claim you live in Hong Kong but complain about Kim Dotcoms (New Zealand resident) “strategy” of not being arrested in Hong Kong because he is in the “wrong” country. A country with other laws than those of YOUR choice/country. You also accuse (implied) him of commiting a crime based on the laws of another country (city). He is in a country where he did NOT commit any crime (yet). And with it you are also implying that another law “should” apply ? (Then Spain must really hurt you where the sun doesn’t shine)

I’ll fix your previous statement for you:
Not everyone is as rich as MAFIAA friends to be able to choose other laws when you don’t like them like moving to Belgium to avoid a new tax law in France.

    • ThumbsUpThumbsDown

Yeah! ……The Hong Kong government doesn’t tolerate filesharing! ….. Neither do the Governments of Russia, China, Rumania, Bulgaria, Italy, Spain, Greece, Australia, Philipines, Tailand, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, France, Poland, America, Ukraine, Turkey, Greece, Moldavia, Japan, Mexico, Argentina, Chile……..

I’m sorry! I like to be thorough; but, I ran out of Obbssesive Compulsive Disorder………,Did I miss anyone?

Your point is that these Governments have no tolerance for filesharing……

Our point is that “The People” have no Tolerance for these Governments…… But…..

What do you think is the single most powerful source of the increasing illigitimacy of these Governments?

Yep! Believe it or not, it’s the Tin Ear!

These governments have the choice to see and protect the interests of the people…. but, they have been consistently proritizing Corporate Interests….

The People have been screaming at the top of their capacity for decades that they have reached Zero Tolerance for the abuses of these Corporations…… But, these Governments have a Tin Ear as Perpetual as their Arrogance …….. so….

….. so…. They haven’t been getting the news….. and…. So they tell the People, “We don’t have any tolerance for …..Public service Pensions … Expanding Healthcare Budgets….. Services for the homeless…. Banking Reform… Derivative Markets Regulation ….. and…..Filesharing……

      OOOPS! What’s that? ….

And, there’s Hank Paulson kneeling in front of Nancy Pelosi and he wants 25 Trillion Dollars of Public Money for failed Banks.

…and, of course, the governments give the 25 Trillion Public Dollars to the Banks; and, continue with the mantra that there’s no money in the kitty for Human needs….

And, then the Public cry goes up; but, the government has such a Tin Ear that it doesn’t hear the Public Cry…..

So, what will clear that Tin Ear?

When the People get angry enough to start advancing Constitutuonal Ammendments imposing the Death Penalty for the kinds of Corporate and Political malfeasance that produces these
      disgraces.

That will clear the Tin Ear.

i hope 2013 turns out to be a good year for file sharers. if Demonoid comes back, Mega gets both it’s new services up and running (and Kim wins the extradition battle, gets serious amounts of compensation and gets to release the names of those corrupt officials behind the original raid!), TPB guys are let out of jail (and the case goes to the EUCJ and EUCHR, where they are exonerated and where the names of the corrupt officials concerned are released and forced to pay compensation for their bias behaviour whilst ruling on cases etc) and the USA entertainment industries actually start to listen to customers, giving all that is asked for. no chance of this last one happening, but i still live in hope!!

Agree, it wasn’t the usual basic MAFIAA stuff that one would search for on demonoid in the first place.

Hopefully demonoid will be back soon.

Then find and download a “spider” (that’s what they were call in the past) to make an offline copy of demonoid. I know, then there still isn’t a tracker but if needed there a way can always be found to edit a torrentfile.

I see no reason why Demonoid did not say a proper goodbye. If if was going to simply die it would have been a simple courtesy to say thanks everybody but we decided to move on and close shop. Since this did not happen that is a good sign that it might come back.

On another note I have to laugh, Hong Kong one of the counterfeit capitals of the world does not tolerate piracy? There is also no mafia in Russia and no poor in China in either as these countries would not tolerate it. Hong Kong has great internet infrastructure which is why megaupload had some there. Unlike mega demonoid has no and will certainly never have any servers in the US. With no visible presence in the US the FBI is pretty powerless to act and to my knowledge the Hong Kong aka chinese government has no copyright police and has no interest in working with the US hollywood mafiaa.

This brings up one more point my wish for the new year is that countries of the world start breaking ranks with the US and tell them they and their copyright laws can fuck off! I would like to countries start to reform copyright laws to something realistic. This would make law enforcement all over the world realize most penalties for copyright are way disproportionate to the crime if any committed and make them reluctant to to devote any resources to help the mafiaa. This is a real victimless crime if there ever was one. The mafiaa has never demonstrated in any way any harm to anyone from filesharing. (I know a developer that has been battling piracy for over 10 years, every time someone cracks his software he puts out a new version and tries to defeat the crack, if there was no money why fight a battle for 10 years? Answer is he is fine financially and is just pissed anyone can try his program for free. It has nothing to do with money and everything to do with control.) Every year Hollywood reports record profits. The point is I don’t have money to collect movies and music and training vids and other stuff that I download. Without the internet I would go back to the library if I wanted any of this stuff or never see it ever. Take anime the stupid japanese want hundreds of dollars for some of their classic series on blu-ray. If I couldn’t download them I sure as hell would never buy them and would never have even a remote interest in seeing them. So mafiaa you are completely full of shit and are fighting a worthless losing battle.

We are in a new year. Domains are expiring and going up for sale.

demonoid.me and demonoid.com have just had their registrations switched to a privacy service based in Brazil.

demonoid.hk has, for a while now, been owned by a front company operating out of a Hong Kong apartment building, in a flat that dozens of other companies operate out of. So I see no reason to believe that any of these domains are controlled by any of the actual Demonoid admins. I would assume they are controlled by bottom-feeding domain brokers at best, MAFIAA spies at worst.

The fact that a tracker was briefly available on demonoid.hk isn’t exactly compelling, since it wasn’t accepting new torrents. Anyone can make their domain point to any IP address they want. It could’ve been pointing to the old tracker, or to an open tracker someone was playing around with. It could even have been a honeypot.

Right now, here’s where everything points, although they don’t always resolve:

    demonoid.me = http://www.demonoid.me = beta.demonoid.me = inferno.demonoid.hk = 113.10.151.111

    demonoid.hk = http://www.demonoid.hk = inferno.demonoid.me = 113.10.151.123

demonoid.hk email goes through Gmail servers.
    demonoid.me email goes to 113.10.151.110.

All of these 113.10.* addresses appear to be routed through Taiwan, but I can’t determine where they actually end up. The .110 and .111 addresses are probably running on the same box, as indicated by the fact that they both are running a mail server reporting itself as http://www.demonoid.me. The .123 address is the only one running a web server. None of the IPs are accepting traffic on the usual BitTorrent ports. IOW, nothing to see here.

So the domains do seem to be related / controlled by the same entity, but still, we don’t know who that is. I do not trust them, and don’t think anyone should really get their hopes up.

    • Albie

      It’s Demonoid,wait and see.

      • Ophelia Millais

What choice do we have but to wait and see? :)

The problem is that this is being touted as “signs of life” from “Demonoid”, when really nothing is actually happening (no website, no tracker, no news), and we don’t know if it’s actually Demonoid at all.

        • plittle1203

They all were in denial the first time…. D making an appearance here and there.. Yet they kept saying Demonoid was choking, gasping for that last gulp of air… Saying D’s having those death jerks from suddenly being cut off by the b***s (you know what….) The big D is as good as dead they said… HA! HA! I’m keeping the faith– I look forward for the Demonoids return :) Thank you..

      • William

        Hi Lee!

You were my favorite Demonoid user. I miss your content.

Let’s hope Demonoid comes back soon.

    • Racothetaco

Very nice job with the investigative work. Thanks!

    • Terraplane_Blues

Nice post, thanks. But I disagree about not getting our hopes up.

  • Van Luu

    so many people missing it!

  • Imgoinghome

I miss them so much, every other site sucks for ebooks.

  • semmedo

    haha!! common Noid!!

  • Maka

I’ve been seeding so much (legal!!!) stuff there :/ It was my ultimate backup for things that could disappear from everywhere else but multitude of other seeds seemed as a way to make them immortal.
I really hope that Demonoid will be back with us soon.

  • guess who

i had a couple of torrents suddenly come alive this afternon. all of a sudden, something was going up that has been sat doing nothing for quite a while.

    i live in hope.

  • Tazmanspaz

Oh please let my beloved Demonoid rise from the ashes! I only use it for books and older books at that. I am sick of all of the BS, ILivid, TornTv, and audio ads that ALL of the other torrent sites give. None of them have any of the older books like ALL of The Years Best SF&F from the 80′s on. I could go on Demonoid and grab 100 books in 20 minutes. It has taken me 6 weeks to get 15 books and none of it the old SF&F.

    • guess who

there are a few good ebook torrent sites. they’re not hard to find.

  • Janelle

I hope that when it returns it becomes a TRUE private tracker!

  • DemonoidWillRiseAgain

Please Demonoid, come back! There’s got to be a way to help them get back on their feet! This is total b.s. We the people, need to do something about this. There’s got to be a way! I’m here full 100% support.

Oh yeah, cough cough :” There’s a storm coming.”

#DemonoidRisesAgain « someone needs to start that has tag for all the demonoid believers. We can do this.

  • Roswell1701

OK… First, it was the suddenly-active, then inactive tracker. Now, this. I think I’ll add a new 3TB hard drive to my collection, just in case… :)

  • Colossonaut

Oh, Demonoid, the second you rise from the ashes I will donate the hundreds of dollars I should have given you before to your cause. Please. For me.

  • Wiggy

You have as much hope of Demonoid coming back as you have of sticking jelly up a hedgehogs arse with a red hot needle.

    • minkepants

Posting under a different name each time and then abandoning that pen-name after each snarky comment is something no one else picks up on.

      You’re a master of espionage.

    • plittle1203

I suppose you should bend over and get ready Wiggy!

  • Your Name

    kickstarter for new demonoid!

  • TorrentQu33n

I really hope they come back…..There is so many things i need. I have hopes…HIGH HOPES the come back kid will rise again! Demonoid for lifeeeee!

  • enzofloc

  • Amelia8

If Demonoid returns i will happily pay a sign up fee and stick to a 1:1 ratio if that is what is needed

Demonoid amounted to 75% of my time online,im lost without it

    please come back oon

  • abdw

    rise and shine

  • ServiusTheBear

I hope it comes back. I really miss the noid. Since it was the best place for the martial I delt with. Plus Chrome dose not get any of the related things happening for me.

  • Animousenon

PUT IT ON TOR LIKE TPB DID

  • guest

I was just saying how much I have missed the content and layout of demonoid. It was by far the best semi priivate tracker there was. They realy had the best uploaders. The search and layout could not be beat and still hassent. If any one knows a better site please point me to it.

    • ServiusTheBear

I have not found any. I am forced to jump around many and recently one of my private sites I used got shut down. I have looked at importing my material I use and found out its actually dam cheaper for me to do that. Since for the love of money you cant get it in the UK without paying an arm an a leg.

      • plittle1203

What is up with all those those torrent sites having the bs like ILivid, TornTv, and the stupid car ads and now most recently freakin’ surveys!!! What is up with that?? Is Wells Fargo Bank and Toyota actually supporting file sharing?? Then why are they advertising before “the download starts” and what is being left on the computer as it’s plays? I’ll go without before I download/answer or watch any of that crap!! Demonoid is King… I felt connected with everyone as if we all were fighting for one cause, together…. Keeping the cost reasonable — I know they say it makes the price go up– I beg to differ… When they have that monopoly they get greedy and squeeze us dry!! They’ll get every bit of morsel from us, so they will— When we have that bit of control and can share our stuff– they’re less likely to be greedy.. I believe they’re more apt to price things reasonably (knowing we’ll get it “our way”…)

  • Frillydilly

    Anybody knows about demonoid.mk?

    • minkepants

Looks like garbage. Links to fakes.

  • John1244

I need Demonoid back! It was the best archive in the world! It’s time for a new age free from monopolies.

  • Cuteytinkerbell

when its back up any chance you can invite me please. thanks

    cuteytinkerbell@googlemail.com

    • ServiusTheBear

Dude. It has open days for registration. No need to wait for invites! So when its up it will end up the same with open days for registration. Hence why it was one of the best Semi Private sites out there!

    • ServiusTheBear

there are open days and there will be again. Its not a full private site!

  • Yawn

    Demonoid sucks

    • ServiusTheBear

      Seriously you are just stupid.

  • Pego230378

    • http://twitter.com/DarkNinja45 WD

God, can’t read anything on there. Don’t fucking use black on black.

  • newblood

If it comes back great! If not too bad… It’ll be missed you guys and gals please remember giving it all this attention does two things, it reminds us how much we all loved Demonoid, and it also reminds other negative people that it can still come back… shut all your mouths and if comes back use it and don’t tell anyone! I say we all need to start a system for us loyal fans where when it comes back its more private…something must be done to save it and keep it around much longer when it does!

  • Guest

  • Beast7master

no it looks like I am :)

Life just hasn’t been the same since Demonoid left us. I said it before and I’ll say it again, Demonoid wasn’t the evil free-for-all torrent website, but rather it was a community. I found music long out of print, and scans of books long in the public domain, but simply untraceable for purchase. It was essentially a library… I hope it will return so that a new generation of people can grow to understand its importance.

    • tropic

Agreed, some people just can’t seem to get into their thick skulls this was not a particular site for movies and music (although they had a massive archive)…what i found there made me feel like a kid in a candy store; out of print and banned literature, extremely rare and unusual games, impossible to find software, educational aides on nearly any subject, operating systems, exams, thousands of images, comic books from every publisher, tv shows and cartoons from the past…and much more. I rarely had to look beyond Demonoid for any such needs and thousands of people’s lives were brightened and enriched through this magnificent site.

  • St Internoid
  • Bill Bradley

One of my favorite sites, I miss it terribly and hope it returns soon.

  • classas

pirate bay and kick ass torrent is better

  • classas

    but now it is better

  • classas

    Demonoid is the # 1 !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Terraplane_Blues

Demonoid was a source of MUCH more than some music files or movies. It was a WEALTH of information about every subject imaginable. If what you sought wasn’t there, a request would usually produce it. More than any other web site I felt, I FEEL, a kinship with the men and women who frequented Demonoid. I wish there was something I could do to facilitate it’s return, but all I can do is hope that the Admin’s will see this and know that I am grateful for whatever work is ongoing to return the site. Me and many thousand others…

    God Speed!

demonoid was great as compliment to public trackers. however it can´t compare to fast private site..

  • Sim

we are so going to fill the member limits in less than a minute if it come back to life

  • Xcrypto

I have been using since 2003 and I must say that it has always been a pleasure to be in this community. It was a public community. It was not about private things. actually it was all about the stuff that you can not find even in these days and in any download site.
Also, as a user we were welcomed whenever we wanted to be part in some development group.By the way, the beta version which was designed had some security issues which led to shutting down the server and attack against it.,.All in all, we should be patient and keep in mind that the tracker is up and will come back with strong server.

  • anon

why would a hacker attack a piracy website? …what a bored dick.

  • Jim M

I miss Demonoid as well.I like the fact that I could find lots of obscure things that weren’t available elsewhere.

I miss my demonoid account no other tracker could compare. Not even close to what they offered.

    • ServiusTheBear

I have to agree even the private servers and usenet servers I was on. Never held up to the info I was looking for. They all had everything else, Plus having to dl other stuff to build up ratio before grabbing what I want is not something I like doing. Heck I have Dragon ball Z complete on here just so I can build my ratio up cause I know that is a big hitter. But that type of working is annoying. Since I cant do seed boxes. So yeah I miss my noid account to.
