The place where breaking news, BitTorrent and copyright collide

First HD-DVD Movie Leaked Onto BitTorrent

The HD-DVD has been cracked, and high definition content is now being distributed freely over BitTorrent. We all knew this would happen sooner or later, looks it was “sooner”. The first HD-DVD to be uploaded to BitTorrent is Serenity, the Firefly movie.

It hasn’t even been a month since the HD-DVD ripper, BackupHDDVD was released and we’re already seeing high definition feature films pop up on torrent sites. Other than Serenity, it is rumoured that HD-DVDs of the movies Batman Begins, Chronicles of Riddick, 12 Monkeys and King Kong have been decrypted and consequently shown up on torrent sites. Yesterday, a handful of hackers figured out how to extract the unique volume key from HD-DVDs.

According to HDTV Blogger, the torrent is “a 19.6GB file in native EVO format that should play on PowerDVD and WinDVD with HD DVD playback.” Apparently, he got a “very, very nasty email” after posting about the first HD-DVD torrent. It seems the anonymous mailer was upset at the fact that he was bringing unnecessary attention to the P2P community. Looks like his plan just backfired.

The anonymous mailer also claims that HDTV Blogger is violating the BitTorrent site’s copyright by posting a screenshot of the site. “By posting that screencap you have violated the copyright of the tracker by posting an image and text that is own by them. You should remove the screencap before legal action is taken upon you.” – is this guy for real?

  • Its already game over

The adult film business supports HDTV and not BluRay. That’s game over.
Those who think that this support isn’t a big deal, have no idea how big the adult industry is. Sony is making a massive, massive mistake.

HD-DvD being rippable makes it BETTER for consumers, its another nail in blue ray’s coffin.

Now the idiots over at HDBits are going to try and ban people for talking about it in public…good luck with that *sarcasm

If the people at HDBits think they’re beneath notice then they deserve to get shutdown for being delusional morons.

This isn’t the 1980s. Porn is freely available on the Internet now. The fact remains that Blu-ray is the superior format, but besides that, Disney is Blu-ray exclusive. That guarantees it will succeed right there because all the soccer moms buying Lion King in HD will have to get the Blu-ray version.

Why kill off Blu-ray? It’s better than Microsoft’s crappy format.

Blu-ray still has way more studio support. You guys don’t know what you’re talking about.

  • Spud

It was bound to happen. It will be interesting to see what action if any may be taken by HD-DVD makers and content producers. Just shows that it doesn’t matter what you make and how tough you make it to crack, someone will always end up cracking it.

Brick and mortar stores, like Mervins, include the cost of “lost revenue” from people not paying for things by passing it onto the legitimate buyers. In the digital world, you have hardware, and software. The cost of hardware is going down. The cost of software is going up. You cant clone hardware, but you can clone software. The cost of that which clones software, the pricey stuff, is almost nothing today.

I see this as a good thing, it will force companies to make actual products that actually serve a materially beneficial purpose, like assisting you in your everyday life…..like say the iPhone. Ultra cheap hardware and all the free entertainment you can access, simply increases the amount of time in your life you spend cemented in front of a spray of pixelated light. Either people will become so attached and have to stay in front of screens 24/7, or the ability to have anything for free will render the displays…..well, do you remember your first girlfriend, it was all hot when it was expensive to access, but after you could get it free on demand, it lost its appeal? :)

  • afasdf

Has anyone downloaded this and confirmed it’s true?

  • noobs

i know from a russsia underground site blu-ray can be backuped on computer and it has a video showing how. but they dont show the source code.

  • lol

    @afasdf

no, some people downloaded it and couldn’t get it to work at all…what do you think that implies?

  • magus

Uhh – since when is $499.00 cheap for a phone/ Or $399.00, $299.99, $199.99 or even $99.99??? Have we really come to a day when a cheap-ass piece of plastic – no matter what it does – is considered a “low priced” at what most people pay 1/3 of for rent? I’ll call the price “reasonable” when it’s $50.00 or less for the NEW stuff, because even at that price it’s still making them money.

I’m not comparing the price of hardware to software with that comment – the fact is, we’re getting sorely raped, and holding our eyes wide open for the gouge much more so for the fictitious price of software, much more than hardware. But lets not get crazy and say that because of that, that the price of hardware is “cheap”.

  • linus

They should put the algorithm on a T-shirt like DeCSS. I’d buy one.

When you do it from the comfort of your couch, you try and come up with a myriad of quasi-socio-political bullshit to justify it as NOT stealing but rather a rebellion against crass commercialism….all the while using your $2500 MacBook Pro with 2gb ram and a 500gb hdd!

To everyone who thinks that the effect from this will be a shift in studio support from HD-DVD to BR, you have to remember that AACS, the copy protection used on HD-DVD, is also used on BR. So any break in the encryption or exploit to retrieve the volume keys is also applicable to BR.

hd-dvd cracked or not will win the format war, mainly because when hd-dvd fucks you its not as painful as blue ray. and comsumers will always take the less painful kind of rape regardless of the product specs.

Nonsense. Whedon and the actors, two of whom ouuldn’t/wouldn’t reappear anyway, hav all made their money. Universal owns the rights, won’t sell them, and won’t make another movie because Serenity did so poorly, AND isn’t about to get into making a SciFi series for TV that would let Whedon do his thing with the freedom he’d need to do it right.

End of story. So as much of a sublime experience those 13 episodes were, pirating the film isn’t going to hurt shit.

who care if HD-DVD is cracked,
who cares if blue ray is cracked.

they will 100% be cracked, i dont wanna download anything but 1.4 gig xvids, who has that much hard drive space for 10-15gig per film or more…

also if u are not able to watch a show on TV, then its perfectly morally right to download it..

for the record, the studios have absolutely no idea how many people watch their dam shows you morons, they use estimates, they get estimates because some people have boxes which monitor their tv activity, like few thousand of them , and then they just multiply the percentage

so infact there could be 50 times mor people watching then they think, although thats pretty high

  • Farscape

I think everyone is missing the BIG picture here… Regardless of the fact that piracy is illegal, does it give the MPAA or RIAA the right to partake in illegal activity to determine the perps? NO, it doesn’t! Let’s say you shoplift from Walmart and steal a Movie {or anything for that matter…} and get away uncaught, does this give Walmart the right to hire strongarm thugs to scour every house of every patron of Walmart to search for and determine whether they stole a product from their clients store… Of course not! But this is exactly what the MPAA and RIAA are doing, sinking what could be profits for its benefactors {the actors and artists} into an unethical venture to scour the internet and invade EVERYONE who uses bittorrent’s privacy. The fact that noone has raised this issue is beyond me… They {MPAA and RIAA} are simply conducting their own illegal activity to prosecute illegal activity by others… this is simply, neither right nor moral! They have become the Gastapo of the Modern world…

    -Porn support.
    -less succeptable to surface scratches.

    BLUERAY -
    -Larger storage(wow)

    Do the math.

I think it will be a repeat of VCR V.S. Beta Max. HD-DVD is VCR and Blu-Ray is Beta Max. Beta was the better technology. VCR was cheaper and almost as good. Beta lasted a few years then they stoped producing the tapes.

  • TrK

haha, you guys are morons. blu ray has basically already won. the only movie company not supporting it is universal. blu ray has basically all the backing. do yourself a favor before you make yourself sound so dumb. google “blu ray support” and see what comes up, then type “HD DVD support”. the porn industries jumped ship from HD DVD and moved to blu ray. haha and the other idiot that doesnt know the specs… yes blu ray is A LOT larger. files dont need to be compressed which in return can load faster… the laser can also read at almost double the speed of HD DVD…picture quality is about the same (but blu ray is better) but if you have a good stereo system, the sound quality is far superior. learn your shiit before you try and put things down. some of you guys look pathetic trying to pretend like you know shiit.

Download size isnt much bigger then a normal dvd download for alot of the BluRay movies, about 4gigs ranging up to 9, after all the extras are cut out. And if you want the extras, you can always find that too.

    Happy internet raping.

seriously i cant believe my eyes, 2 factions, well 3, 1 anti piracy, 1 anti BR and 1 anti HD DVD… At the end of the day, dont u think we all WANT WHATS BEST?? who cares how we get it and when we get it, it will come 2 us eventually, and the more we have the cheaper it gets..
I dont give a rats ass about piracy, the companies make enuff money to buy 3rd world countries, and yet all i see is every1 bishing on here… if u dont like then who cares about ur opinion, i mean theres enuff good in the world with out the bad so keep the positives instead of the negetives, man i own a laser disk player with 70 movies plus, and ive had to transfer them over to dvd, not cheap cosidering laser disks in australia were $100 aus back then… I own like 5 copies of 1 movie cause of how companies dont release the ultimate edition, so if i hear any1 sayin how piracy sux, or hd is betta than br or blah blah, take ur head out of ur ass cause seriously, forums like this which only perpetuate flames, for no other reason than lame assed wanna be tards with little or no knowledge of the industry really need 2 get a life….
some of the comments on here r good, most r bs, so thats no a forum as far as im concerned.. want info, well get good info.. enuff said…

where i live, in argentina a blank bru-ray disc is 99 ARS that are like 30 or 34 dollars, so it is still very expensive to burn a pirate bluray… i think that everyone was ok with dvds and everyone was happy, but sony’s intentions are evil :D…. personally i will continue downloading movies and burning them into dvds which i pay 0.50 dollars

    USD 34 vs. USD 0.50
    I think its clear….

I agree with some of what has been said.. I just don’t understand why you people rant of about the HDDVD vs BR thing.. either way, one is going to fall away, does it really matter? someone is going to be right, and someone is going to be wrong, so what?
Just wait for everything to clear up and then get what you need.. chances are that you guys are going to go our and buy the drive/writer and whatever hardware you can get your hands on to support your belief, and then half of you are going to realise you wated a lot of money.. don’t be brainwashed.. the media hype has a purpose, think about it ~ just wait it out, for a little longer, I’m sure watching a movie in a slighlty lesser quality for a while longer wouldnt hurt..

Many people go on about how Sony is evil.. haha! it makes me laugh, I have a friend that worked with Sony on their publicity recently.. he said that Sony si represented like any high profile celeb, just get people to talka bout it, and no matter what they say, good or bad, people will notice and buy, cos that’s how people are, once you start talking about it, curiosity sets in, even if you have heard bad things, you still want to understand.

With all said.. money is an issue, most people can’t afford to pay for DVDs, but most of us already have good computers and internet connections for work.. is it that hard to put together?
it’s convinient, it’s cheap and it’s hassle free ~ no worry of stolen money from bank accounts, no worry of shitty DVD quality, and freedom download whatever you please where ever you please..
if someone can come up with something better than that for the film industry.. then im sure everyone will take a second look.. till then ~
    downloading will never stop!

Anyway, long thread, wow… some angst, some sympahty… all over the charts.

Ok, all the bs about porn… haha, how pathetic, people who watch porn are after Hi-Def? I thought it was about rubbin one out… jesus most guys only need a minute or two, semi-decent rez does the trick.

Anyway, about Disney only doing one, whatever, it’s Disney flix, and Blu-ray is better technology.

As for Paramount/Universal, they’ve always been behind Disney in every aspect. Their children’s movies suck, their themeparks are lame (minus a few rollercoasters). Their stock doesn’t even do as well. Keep in mind Disney isn’t even one company, it’s 7 (I can’t remember, the mall stores split a few years ago).

Downloads are lame unless they’re uncompressed… and for the person who said downloads will never stop? I wish that were true but if the USA keeps moving toward socialism and facist control… well, in Myanmar (sp) they shut down output of the net to control the masses… it’s not hard for them to one day just tell the companies to turn it all off…

For the apple iPhone (bad example, but cell phones in general) they do serve a purpose for those who need them, ie. not the 16 yr old blonde brat driving down the highway, but perhaps the businessman/woman, contractor etc etc etc etc.

My expectation, at least for the next so many years before this whole conversation is mute because BOTH formats are out-done by the next format of 10000p or whatever (ala OLED, laser tv’s on the way – who knows what they’ll be capable of… monitors already are beyond 1080p) is that both of these formats will stay in place…

The video game industries alone won’t allow the PS3 to become obsolete, nor will Microsofts billions of dollars allow the Xbox to go away… so both systems stay. Some companies will never get off their stupid asses and allow the consumer to be right… ie. I have a blu-ray player and want to watch Transformers… it’s just lame… but in the long run none of this will matter.

Thanks for the original poster, in that this thread is lasting almost 3/4 of a year and still interests people.

  • Trust me, I know

Listen up about this HDDVD vs. Blu-Ray

iwe done my reaserch, and the facts right now are:

    -HDVD has superior quality
-HDDVD is cheaper in every way, has allways been, not gonna change
-Blu-ray has more capasity as storage, but when it comes to movies, a 60gb movie is still inferier qulaity compared to 20gb HDVD, that says something (Blu-ray is using bad codec, dont know why…)
-Blu-ray has more backup from companys (so fucking what, when everyone realises HDDVD is better the support WILL change) will be better for storage on computers i guess

Yes, you fucking sony fagfanboys, Blu-ray will be better than HDVD in 4-7years when they develop their hardware, and will be better than HDVD when that time comes, but SUPRIES SUPRISE in 5years it will be old shit, by then the NEXT GENERATION disc has arrived, i personally would wait for that allready but yes, there will be a so called HVD (Holographic Versatile Disc) with storage capacity to 3.9 Tera bytes… support that instead. i smell quality!

  • Trust me, I know

    *HDDVD
I think buying is always good. I prefer to have a legal, good quality copy.

I also think $1 per movie is fair.

Movie Collectors would likely pay thousands more dollars collecting all the stuff they ever wanted. Anyway, thats one view, as naive as may be.
dvd-r’s dont work.

  • Guest

HMM let’s see, maybe Dvd– inseated of Dvd-r.

make sure your dvd player does accept dvd– format.

  • dandaman

WTF? “HMM lets see, maybe dvd- instead of dvd-r” are you an idiot or what? you can put movies on dvd-r/+r/rw/single layer/dual layer.. its your player that has to be able to handle the different types. majority of players can easily play -r, that is the most popular.

I have to disagree with “Da5id” about the first part of your post (The better & clearer the picture) the more it does the trick lol I love my porn looking real. And as for “They {MPAA and RIAA} are simply conducting their own illegal activity to prosecute illegal activity by others… this is simply, neither right nor moral! They have become the Gestapo of the Modern world…” Three cheers you said it, I agree Hitler is gone why bring his methods back & not just them The whole government is in on these methods (with any thing against Fair Use Rights) We should be free this is America. Isn’t it bad enough they poison are food & products we use with cancer causing stuff among other things in a conspiracy set up by our government to control population over flow by killing us off with poisons in small amount to cause us to die slow painful deaths now they are trying to take away our freedoms as well.

The titles are old. I already got the ones I wanted at screening time or before. I don’t need to see them again anyway, but if I wanted to watch it again in higher quality I wouldn’t bother downloading a huge file. I’d just hire & copy. It’d save a lot of time & B/W I could be using to get a stack of music or smaller movies.

  • king-tobius

blue ray is the best it is just a much better spec than hd dvd cos it has much more capasity but tht is kinda bad 4 us people who like to downlaod movies because the files will be massive plus 2 copy them you need a blue ray burner but at the end of the day unless ur a poor hobo u should buy ur dvds

  • Anth0ny309
