Indie Band Tops a Million Downloads, Breaks BitTorrent Record

Shipping an album to more than a million people is a dream for every artist, but one that only comes true for a privileged few. Or does it? With help from BitTorrent, indie band Sick of Sarah have now joined a seemingly exclusive club of artists whose albums have been downloaded more than a million times. In the process, the girls also set a new record for the most-seeded torrent ever.

sick ofWhile the major record labels are doing everything in their power to fight the illicit distribution of ‘their’ music on BitTorrent sites, several indie labels and artists are choosing a different path.

Last month the punky girl-rock band Sick of Sarah decided to release their latest album ’2205′ to the public on BitTorrent, at no cost. In order to gain maximum exposure the band partnered with BitTorrent Inc. who helped to promote the free download through an app in the uTorrent BitTorrent client.

A critical record label executive might look at this idea and wonder “But why free?” According to Sick of Sarah’s bassist Jamie Holm, it’s simply a matter of weighing the benefits and costs.

“Releasing an album on BitTorrent is an incredible opportunity. We wanted to reach our fans on the Internet, and our fans use BitTorrent,” Holm said when the partnership was announced last month.

“While album sales will remain a critical element of success, we also believe BitTorrent will help us drive new fans to live concerts and purchase our merchandise,“ Holm added.

A month later, we can certainly conclude that the band has succeeded in their attempt to reach out to a new audience. In just 18 days the free album was downloaded by a million people, and a month after the initial release 1,365,453 BitTorrent users had copied it to their computers.

In addition to the massive number of downloads, Sick of Sarah also set a new BitTorrent record for the largest number of active seeders on a music album ever. Yesterday, the Clearbits tracker which is used for the release reported 82,943 seeders. To our knowledge, there has never been a music torrent with this many people actively seeding.

Even for all torrents ever released it may be close to a record. The largest BitTorrent swarm (seeds + peers) ever witnessed was ‘Heroes.S03E01.HDTV.XviD-0TV’ with a total of 144,663 peers, but it’s unsure how many of these were seeders.

Of course, all of the above would have never been possible without BitTorrent Inc. who bundled the album with the download of their popular BitTorrent clients. Everyone who downloaded the uTorrent or BitTorrent Mainline application during the last month, was automatically downloading the Sick of Sarah album unless they opted out. Needless to say, this, and other P2P promotions such as Frostclick, are the main reason the seeder record was set.

The album promotion was part of the “Artist Pilot” project of BitTorrent Inc. where independent artists can claim BitTorrent fame. As of yesterday Sick of Sarah traded in its spot for the promotion of the release of the independent movie Zenith.

Needless to say, the band is delighted with the million plus downloads, an achievement that went beyond all expectations. “Our success on the BitTorrent platform has been overwhelming,” said Jamie Holm in a response yesterday. “This technology and audience aren’t only the future, they’re here today.”

“We welcome all the new fans and hope our experiments with online distribution and fan engagement open up new doors for other artists,” the happy musician concluded.

  • Whatever

Hopefully they don’t get disappointed if only a fraction of that million actually spends their money on it and don’t fall back in the old “lost sale” arguments.

Its one thing to drop an album on a million computers but another to have talent and get many people actually like it enough.

At least it will be a (relative) fair test of wether they are good enough or not by not using expensive commercials to hype the album (Relative because they did get more exposure than the average bear… i mean band).

Might want to add there that around 243,587 downloads came from FrostClick/FrostWire as well. They ran a promotion of the album for at least 2 weeks (when it only had about 500k downloads)

FrostClick/FrostWire is now also promoting the film Zenith along with Vodo.net and Clearbits.net.

    • Anonymous

Sorry Guba, will definitely add that in.

        Thanks a lot!

We’ll try to let you know more about FrostClick promotional efforts. We’re always working hard to put big numbers like those so folks like TorrentFreak can write about them.

Only this way we can make a change not only in File Sharing, but in the way Content Creators can reach the masses without submitting themselves to the old status quo of mass content distribution.

  • DocGerbil100

I DLed and listened to it a while back – it’s not really my cup of tea, TBH, but I hope they find an appreciative audience. :).

      Agreed ;)

Hey and why not link to their homepage? http://sickofsarah.com/
If they would have hit it up with some ads on their website they could have made a good buck from those visitors.

What!? BitTorrent as a successful marketing platform!? Free content used as a backbone to drive tangible physical revenue!? An Indie band showing increased measures of success without the RIAA!?

Call the Government. We need to make this a Federal crime.

hey hey hey dont give them ideas.

“Everyone who downloaded the uTorrent or BitTorrent Mainline application during the last month, was automatically downloading the Sick of Sarah album unless they opted out”

So it’s of like all those bundled toolbars and adware that come with some software then. We hate those, so why is this better?

    • Anon

It isn’t that bad to be fair. The only reason I actually found out about pioneer one was because when I installed µtorrent on my new PC, Its just a form of advertising, some like it some don’t. All you have to do is uncheck a box, which isn’t that hard, However I do get the point you are trying to make.

      • no

The box should be unchecked by default. Just my opinion though.

        • Sendaii

Is it that hard to uncheck it?

        • http://twitter.com/ynthrepic David Boulton

For something like music, there isn’t any harm in having the box checked by default. But for actual applications, like toolbars and the like, there are obvious ulterior motivations, in which case unchecked should be the default.

        • http://twitter.com/uJonesing Utah Jones

It also isn’t quite as bothersome to remove/delete should one leave it checked by accident, so I’m willing to let it slide. I think it would have been cooler (and possibly better received as a marketing move) if instead of just a checkbox, a page of the installer was dedicated to informing the “installee” about the additional install, the album, and maybe about the band itself.

    • Anonymous

I don’t think it ‘harms’ anyone, there’s no ‘commercial’ interest aside from the PR and legality boost.

That said, we always have to be critical of the motivation ;)

    • Phobophobia

because people who don’t read and untick boxes when installing deserve to have all that kind of sh!t bogging down their PCs

  • Mainframe Xaiver

LIES!!!!!! Musicians can not be succesfull with out the backing of the RIAA . I will be contacting my Lawyers on behalf of MAFIAA, Artists making a living on their own must be stopped at all costs :P haha jk I fully support anyone who doesnt want the RIAA to promote their works.

Haha, a dirty mind is a joy forever. I’m using ruTorrent (web version) so i did not hear about this until i saw it here. I will have a look to see if it is any good. But they deserve some help from us for taking the chance either way. Like sending it to some people you think might like this genre of music if it’s not your own taste.
Now lets see if these girls can handle some more seeding :p

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SNEGX3IQKOO47C67A3UCS2VBVU Don_Maxis

I just listened to the whole album. Not my kinda music, but I’ll seed anyways. I’m sure a lot of emo pre-teen girls would just love this…

    Here is a similar story

It’s been just a little over a month since Sick of Sarah crossed into uncharted territory and released their album “2205? for free in the BitTorrent App Studio, and it’s already breaking new ground once again by surpassing the 1 millionth download mark.

“Congratulations to the band!” says BitTorrent Inc.. “If you haven’t downloaded the album, go check it out in the App Studio (or download the torrent). Or hit up a concert in your neighborhood, and buy merchandise here. This is a major accomplishment and a thrilling development, as it illustrates the willingness of the BitTorrent community to support new artists.”

  • Cujo

    very cool and sexy too

not like the so many others with there head in thier ass

    • Cujo

lets get this on the net.

everyone add it to your faverate torrent site ;)

  • zan

Been trying to convince a musician friend to go down this route for a little while now. Was convinced my arguments of additional merchandise sales/bigger gig audiences, free promotion (if people don’t know you exist in the first place they’ll never be a fan) etc etc. Offered to do all the uploading etc for him he seemed enthusiastic then out of the blue I get “I cant give it away it cost £4000 to make” I wish him luck but as a unknown artist i think its going to be a while if he ever makes that money back from amazon mp3 and cdbaby sales.

Still what do i know :-/

Inde artist formula for success in the 21st century and destroying the old corporate paradigm:

      1. Make music.
      2. Give music away for free.
      3. Put a donate button on your website with a note saying “If you like my music please donate. Any amount of money is cool. It’ll help support me so I can keep making music and I’ll be eternally greatful.”
      4. Distribute an official torrent of your music with a note saying “If you like my music, please go to my website and donate. Or see me in concert. Or if you can’t afford to then just tell your friends about me.”
      5. Profit.

You should’ve told your friend that if he embraced filesharing whole heartedly, released his work for free, and contacted Torrentfreak, they’d probably run a frontpage story on him and he’d make back the £4000 plus change in the next 24 hours. People would be donating even if they didn’t like his music, just to support progress.

Hmm… Okay, I’ve got an idea. You know how Torrentfreak has a weekly article about the top 10 most downloaded movies on bittorrent? Well, how about a weekly round-up of new and unknown(maybe also a few established?) indie artists who’ve embraced the philosophy of giving their music away for free and making money through donations, concerts, and merchandising? There could be a short description of each artist/band, a quote or two, and a link to their website.

They need exposure and I think TF would be a great way to give them that. Also, it’d be a great way for us, the readers, to discover new artists. Much better than depending on word of mouth, the radio, or random scattershot downloading in the hopes we just stumble upon a half decent artist who also isn’t stuck firmly behind the times and thinks sharing is the devil.

You could add a new sidebar listing all of the Indie Artists of the Week articles(well, alright, maybe not ALL. Just like the five most recent ones and a link to view the rest), like NewsBits and MostDiscussed. Call it Torrentfreak’s Musicfreak section or something.

Come on, Ernesto(or somebody else in charge of TF), wha’dya say? I think it’d be an awesome addition.

  • Microfreaks

The band said it right they want to draw traffic to concerts and push merchandise. This is the only way bands make any money because the RIAA takes the money from the disc sales and gives the band little to nothing.

  • Haxor

so what does gene simmons have to say now about needing the “industry”
    cya gene

  • Donotreply

    Congrats to them.

I hope TF keeps an eye out for them and gives us an update if this translates to an increase of concert ticket sales and associated band merchandise (might encourage a few other musicians to follow the same example).

Awesome. They surely got a whole lot of exposition. Let’s see how they fare now.

I’m sincerely cheering on them, hope they succeed marvelously. Now I need to download it and check their sound =/

Awesome. Also, it’s really good music, that I’d only expect from some kinda huge label.

    • Bloke

Huge labels don’t write really good music. The bands still write the music, the huge labels (in the past) only financed the production and distribution.

A good producer can be hired by any band if they want to polish their recorded sound and don’t already have the skill to do this themselves in the many high-end DAW solutions now available on any platform.

Huge labels more often than not, when they choose to write themselves, churn out mass-produced shite. ;)

  • The Unicorns Leprichaun

just downloaded it…still over 70k seeds which is cool! Actually like the sound, not what i call punk, but very good stuff…..reminds me of Joan Jetts first group The Runaways!

They are coming to my area, might try to go see them live.
