Joss Stone: Piracy is Brilliant, Music Should be Shared

They are quite rare events but on occasion, artists actually encourage fans to share their music online. Singer Joss Stone has no problem doing so at all. In fact, after a recent concert in Argentina she said that piracy is “brilliant”.

joss stoneJoss Stone, who won a Grammy last year, loves music, but hates the the music industry. In a recent interview she said that – unlike herself – most artists are brainwashed by the industry, and she encouraged people to share her music.

After the show a reporter asked her what she thinks of piracy, and people who download her songs off the Internet. Her response baffled the reporter, as she simply told him: “I think it’s great…” There was an awkward silence for a few seconds, the reporter probably expected to hear something else from her. “Great?,” he said.

“Yeah, I love it. I think it’s brilliant and I’ll tell you why,” Stone continued. “Music should be shared. [...] The only part about music that I dislike is the business that is attached to it. Now, if music is free, then there is no business, there is just music. So, I like it, I think that we should share.”

“It’s ok, if one person buys it, it’s totally cool, burn it up, share it with your friends, I don’t care. I don’t care how you hear it as long as you hear it. As long as you come to my show, and have a great time listening to the live show it’s totally cool. I don’t mind. I’m happy that they hear it.”

Stone went on to say that most artists have probably been “brainwashed” by the record labels, when they discourage their fans from downloading music. Of course, Stone is not the only artist who actually wants people to share their work. Last year rapper 50 Cent made some positive remarks about filesharing, and Nine Inch Nails takes it even further, as they upload their music onto BitTorrent sites themselves.

These artists are spot on, in fact, several studies have shown that artists actually benefit from filesharing. The more music people share, the more CDs they buy and the more concerts they visit.

She didn’t use the term “piracy”, right? If so kudos to her albeit I’ve never listened to any of her songs.

  • Xplicit

being an artist is no longer a profession hence the fact so many artists are now becoming producers, actors and all that other BS. the music industry will exists no more within years to come as the popularity of P2P increases.

Someone forgot that she is Welsh.

  • Jon Severinsson

@4: Actually using the term “piracy” isn’t necessary such a bad thing. “Piracy” is an invented word, without any historical ties (unless you are referring to the physical theft of CDs and DVDs on the high seas), and thus have the meaning the people using it want it to have. And as the pirate movement (Pirate Bureau, Pirate Party, etc) are doing a good job of reclaiming it, I’m actually hearing it used positively more often than negatively, at least here in Sweden.

The words to look out for are “stealing” or “theft”, as that implies that the speaker don’t understand the nature of copyright (or does understand it but wants to misslead you).

  • sexxxbox

I only have two remarks to make:
    first:
“…As long as you come to my show”
    “…the more concerts they visit.”
It is clear that most of their profits come from live shows, CDs sales dont really matter much.

  • cb

Man, I feel a lot better about pirating all her albums now.

  • Anonymous

I love it when artists have sense and say things like this. This means they are in it for the art and not the money (any more than the fact they need to sustain themselves, that’s completely understandable), which means there is a much better chance their art (in this case, music) will be good (even if “good” is subjective).

now all she has to do….is BE THE LAW!

  • TurboFool

I’ve heard of her before, and probably heard her music, but now I am TOTALLY going to go download it and see what it’s all about. She earned my interest.

  • skeptical

i believe she is brainwashed, fame defiantly changed her, you can tell by her accent, and i believe she moved to LA.

thus, i think this is just for PR.

  • Jay

    @skeptical,

    what?

  • Steve

Yea although my interest/respect for her has increased just by a slight few words many artists are following trend now and embracing free music.

But so what? PR or no PR we are the beneficiares

    Wow… beautiful AND intelligent.

  • Feruken

Some things just shouldn’t be called piracy, people pay for things and decide to share them, and it’s just fun.

While some people do share things to make their own profits (which is a shame) others just like to share, it’s just another part of what makes the internet so fun and successful. And the word “piracy” just sounds and looks bad, when used on so many things.

Glad to see another artist look at the positive side and is not just always thinking about making more and more money.

    Torrent or it didn’t happen!

  • #YLS#

Actually, funnily enough I remember like a few years ago, on british TV, CD:UK I think the show was? She was on next to Dizzee Rascal they were asked about illegal downloading and I’m not too sure but I think she actually sounded against piracy!

If someone can find a clip of that, it would be an interesting…

I urge people… Just because celebs endorse are actions, doesn’t mean there’s not a chance of becoming their tools to the point there no better than the industry we’re fighing.

  • skeptical

    @jay

all im saying is where is her free legal downloadable content? its just PR.

  • ASEdf

    Shut up, stupidface.

  • skeptical

    @#YLS#

well cd.uk was a kids program. i dont think it would be very responsible of her(especially early on in her career) to promote piracy to unintelligent 10 year olds

hmmm… guess you cant trust pop:)

  • Spanky69

    @ #20

WTF happened there? Did you get taken over by aliens, mid sentence?

  • #YLS#

    @23 skeptical

Oh don’t get me wrong, I understand that times change and people gain experience to change their views.

But… As others say we need to see a legal torrent or so come out to prove it, maybe a ‘Her own Favorites’ EP, as a sample of her talent.

I worry she’s just on the ‘Lets go share’ bandwagon. If an artist is going throw comments like that around we truely need to see support not PR. don’t you agree?

Plus last time I went down Tescos in the DVD isle I heard what I can guess is 10yr old saying to an even younger kid… I’ve already downloaded that one! (I doubt he’s got a credit card personally, lol)

If Joss Stone thinks her way, then she should put up her own website where the music is available for free. Perhaps even make advertising money off of it.

If Joss Stone really thinks that way, then she should put up her own website where the music is available for free. Perhaps even make advertising money off of it, or other kinds of patronage from the fans.

  • 12345

The problem with her putting up her own torrents is that she may still have contracts with record labels… NIN did for a while there, which is why they couldn’t do it until Ghosts I-IV.

  • website design

    I’d hit it.

  • kale

27 has it spot on. she couldn’t, and can’t, put her music online for free cos it technically isn’t her music to do with as she pleases. she signed a contract with a record company, and it’s “their” music. and no big record company will realease their artists back catalogue online for free… well, as long as their made up of greedy shareholders and dinosaurs who know that their own end is in sight aren’t going to do that, just as turkeys wouldn’t vote for xmas, or West Virginia for a black president.

  • David

No, really you would lick her all over too. Be a man, admit it.

  • Anonymous

@26. Why must she do it that way? Who says the advertising only model is the only way? Why not leave her CD on sale so that those who want to pay for the physical cd can do so? She’s just saying she won’t go after them for pirating it. This is the way it should be.

  • Brett Wilkin

I’ve never heard of Joss Stone, but already I love her. If she ever comes to the area I WILL attend her concerts, and I will also buy her CDs even if I’ve already downloaded them, (and I don’t buy CDs) as well as send her a donation.

Anonymous: “If Joss Stone really thinks that way, then she should put up her own website where the music is available for free. “

Good idea. When her music is already spread out accross numerous Bittorrent indexes and P2P networks, the first thing she should do is create a completely needless and redundant website with all her stuff hosted on it, even though people can already get it from about a million different places just by Googling “Joss Stone” and “torrent” and even though the bandwidth costs would be killer.

Say now, were you perhaps dropped on your head as a child?

  • ,

Her response might be typical of the post-Napster generation who grew up sharing music over the internet.

    ‘McFly announce new album giveaway

Pop band McFly are to give away their new album Radio:ACTIVE with the Mail on Sunday newspaper on 20 July.

Singer Tom Fletcher told the BBC it was a good way of expanding their fanbase and reaching new audiences.

He said: “We get to put it into almost three million homes, which is an incredible opportunity for us.

“Hopefully the three million people will all enjoy the music and they’ll decide to see us when we go on tour.” Last year, Prince did a similar thing.’

Well… what do you think? Could we be witnessing the beginnings of the new corporate distribution model?

Do we care, as long as we can use our ‘internets’ the way we want?

  • Kimi

wonderful…..shes is rather thinking logically. Everyone know, It is almost impossible to stop sharing who wants to share and ones who want to download those shared, shes rather moving forward and want artists to take advantage of the fact more people hear the more people become attracted to the music, and more will the people curious to attend the concerts, and the more money she will end up earning.

This is business term is called “The First Mover Advantage”

  • #YLS#

    @38

I think it is in alot of ways good, espically as these guys are ACTUALLY doing something productive.
As much as Kid Rock and Joss Stone are saying ‘positve’ things, it’s still just words, doesn’t mean when we download there work we’re still not going to be slapped with the lawsuit.

I’ve never really liked McFly but I’ll give em’ and ounce of respect now :D

This is a really interest idea from Joss about getting rid of the business associated with music. However, that being said the music industry is a billion dollar industry.. and people are too hungry to make money from it.

Ask her if she allows people to come into her live shows without buying a ticket, for free…

She wants to share the music….does she give free concerts?
No, you pay big $$$ to see her sing live.

  • Scott

Considering most of the “illegal” music you can get via file sharing is crap (ripped by 14-year olds at 64bps – and often mistitled). I’ve never been that fond of it anyway.

But every so often, I did get what I wanted and guess what?

Joss is right. To me it was like a preview. I’d much rather have the CD. That way I can rip it to my liking and see any accompanying lyrics and liner notes and have a permanant backup if my mp3s (well flacs, actually) become toast.

If anything, file sharing has INCREASED the amount of CDs I buy.

The labels don’t get it. Can you say “free advertising”? I knew you could..

Why wasn’t this a problem back in the days when everyone had double tape decks. I use to give my friends copy of tapes all the time. I guess when big brother can now watch you there is a problem.

  • Counsel

Remember, she can say, “Go ahead and download the music,” but YOU are the one that the RIAA will come after. Her saying so does NOT give anyone a license to download her music.

Joss telling you it is okay to “stick it to the man” is all good, but notice she does not say she will give free concerts so that everyone can “share music.”

Concerts are where the musicians make their money. “The man” makes it on sales (vinyl, CDs, legal download sales, etc) of products containing the music.

If you are going to stick it to the man, stick it to her. Then she will start yelling that you are stealing her music too… Want to bet she will not?

  • buzz86

wow her views are smart and interesting for music and i agree. i think people who can sing should be happy to make a living on it, this isn’t really about the piracy of music just people are getting sick of these manufactured singers that are there for the sole benefit of lining their pockets. they sue everyone into oblivion so much that people who are talented aren’t going to RIAA or record companies to get a record deal and make money people are going to sites such as myspace and garageband. I barely listen to mainstream music anymore.

  • Dani

I totally agree. I can’t count how many artists I’ve “stolen” music from, only to discover that I love it, need to find out where they are playing live and attend, and am not satisfied with the handful of songs I’ve downloaded and want the whole LP. Kudos! I hope this is a rising trend.

    Here’s an interesting question:

What about dead artists? You can’t harm their paychecks if they aren’t alive to collect them.

I just dl’d a bunch of George Carlin Videos yesterday. RIP.

What should happen are deals like with Hottopic I bought a Disturbed TeeShirt for 15$ and had no problem buying the CD for another 5$.
Or Gamestop sells used dvds buy 2 get 2; and I’ll go out and buy 4 like-new movies for like 25bucks.

If they’d charge less for their products, or offer more: most people wouldn’t have a problem.

But 24.99 for a dvd I’m not sure I’ll even like is a kick in the balls.

  • #YLS#

    @62

Dead people/non-working artists are the worst copyrighters… as The copyright doesn’t end, people just buy up the rights as if they were coperate shares.

As for DVDs… I personally download the movies I’m not all to sure about and then look to buy.

Lord of War, never heard of it, downloaded it, watched it, liked it, bought it for £8 out of tescos

man, sucks that i don’t really like her music.

  • Putin 08

Counsel: Remember, she can say, “Go ahead and download the music,” but YOU are the one that the RIAA will come after.

    Bzzt. Wrong, numbnuts.

There’s a higher chance of getting struck by lightning than being persued by the RIAA for downloading Joss Stone MP3′s.

Infact, if you compare the known number of filesharers to the number of filesharers the RIAA tries to sue each year, a person’s odds of being sued for downloading any kind of copyrighted music is far less than 1%.

Counsel: Joss telling you it is okay to “stick it to the man” is all good, but notice she does not say she will give free concerts so that everyone can “share music.”

What do you expect her to do, pea-brain, live in a cardboard box and sing on the streetcorners?

You must be from Happy Magical Gumdrop Land where everything costs a smile, so let me clue you in about the real world. In the real world, people need money to make a living, and since 99% of musicians signed under the mainstream labels can’t rely on record sales because the RIAA robs them through the nose, the only thing they can depend on are live gigs. Charging for these live gigs is how 99% of these musicians make a living.

But apparently, the fact that she wants to make enough money to survive as a full-time career musician lumps her in with the parasitic gang of criminals that compose the RIAA.

    Fascinating.

If the other halfwit I dealt with was dropped on his head as a child, the only way to explain your level of retardation are massive birth defects. Was your mother kicked in the stomach by a mule when she was pregnant? Or was she just in to Wild Turkey and crackrocks? Wait, don’t tell me. I bet it was a little of both.

  • DJ99

I bought a Joss Stone CD a while ago, and guess what – it has has anti-ripping technology on it. So while she may advocate sharing, her record label is making it difficult.

  • asianblackie

    >> 55

Thanks no.55. I’ve no idea who Joss Stone is, or how she sounds like.

But your playlist samples has convince d me to buy her CD. I love her voice. No to mention her looks.

Yes, I could lick her over and over again. Any normal guy would. And maybe even a number of gals too.

  • Anonymous

    @44

dude get real, music and its distribution costs pounds the first time round, so sharing it isnt an issue.

for an artist to make her way in life and to see support, the live shows are where the magic happens.

that and when you consider the work, electric, equipment, and pure manpower going into one single show on a tour, travel and acomodation between venues, and everything else that goes into a show, that 20 quid you just spent on a ticket isnt so much anymore.
