Joss Stone: Piracy is Brilliant, Music Should be Shared

Written by Ernesto on June 25, 2008

They are quite rare events but on occasion, artists actually encourage fans to share their music online. Singer Joss Stone has no problem doing so at all. In fact, after a recent concert in Argentina she said that piracy is “brilliant”.

joss stoneJoss Stone, who won a Grammy last year, loves music, but hates the the music industry. In a recent interview she said that - unlike herself - most artists are brainwashed by the industry, and she encouraged people to share her music.

After the show a reporter asked her what she thinks of piracy, and people who download her songs off the Internet. Her response baffled the reporter, as she simply told him: “I think it’s great…” There was an awkward silence for a few seconds, the reporter probably expected to hear something else from her. “Great?,” he said.

“Yeah, I love it. I think it’s brilliant and I’ll tell you why,” Stone continued. “Music should be shared. [...] The only part about music that I dislike is the business that is attached to it. Now, if music is free, then there is no business, there is just music. So, I like it, I think that we should share.”

“It’s ok, if one person buys it, it’s totally cool, burn it up, share it with your friends, I don’t care. I don’t care how you hear it as long as you hear it. As long as you come to my show, and have a great time listening to the live show it’s totally cool. I don’t mind. I’m happy that they hear it.”

Stone went on to say that most artists have probably been “brainwashed” by the record labels, when they discourage their fans from downloading music. Of course, Stone is not the only artist who actually wants people to share their work. Last year rapper 50 Cent made some positive remarks about filesharing, and Nine Inch Nails takes it even further, as they upload their music onto BitTorrent sites themselves.

These artists are spot on, in fact, several studies have shown that artists actually benefit from filesharing. The more music people share, the more CDs they buy and the more concerts they visit.

Notice this attitude comes from a young person!
The oldies need to wake up, I beta lot of them were innovative when they were young!

She didn’t use the term “piracy”, right? If so kudos to her albeit I’ve never listened to any of her songs.

being an artist is no longer a profession hence the fact so many artists are now becoming producers, actors and all that other BS. the music industry will exists no more within years to come as the popularity of P2P increases.

Someone forgot that she is Welsh.

@4: Actually using the term “piracy” isn’t necessary such a bad thing. “Piracy” is an invented word, without any historical ties (unless you are referring to the physical theft of CDs and DVDs on the high seas), and thus have the meaning the people using it want it to have. And as the pirate movement (Pirate Bureau, Pirate Party, etc) are doing a good job of reclaiming it, I’m actually hearing it used positively more often than negatively, at least here in Sweden.

The words to look out for are “stealing” or “theft”, as that implies that the speaker don’t understand the nature of copyright (or does understand it but wants to misslead you).

I only have two remarks to make:
first:
“…As long as you come to my show”
“…the more concerts they visit.”
It is clear that most of their profits come from live shows, CDs sales dont really matter much.

Man, I feel a lot better about pirating all her albums now.

I love it when artists have sense and say things like this. This means they are in it for the art and not the money (any more than the fact they need to sustain themselves, that’s completely understandable), which means there is a much better chance their art (in this case, music) will be good (even if “good” is subjective).

now all she has to do….is BE THE LAW!

12 Jun 26, 2008 at 00:21 by TurboFool

I’ve heard of her before, and probably heard her music, but now I am TOTALLY going to go download it and see what it’s all about. She earned my interest.

i believe she is brainwashed, fame defiantly changed her, you can tell by her accent, and i believe she moved to LA.

thus, i think this is just for PR.

@skeptical,

what?

15 Jun 26, 2008 at 01:36 by Steve

Yea although my interest/respect for her has increased just by a slight few words many artists are following trend now and embracing free music.

But so what? PR or no PR we are the beneficiares

Wow… beautiful AND intelligent.

Some things just shouldn’t be called piracy, people pay for things and decide to share them, and it’s just fun.

While some people do share things to make their own profits (which is a shame) others just like to share, it’s just another part of what makes the internet so fun and successful. And the word “piracy” just sounds and looks bad, when used on so many things.

Glad to see another artist look at the positive side and is not just always thinking about making more and more money.

Torrent or it didn’t happen!

20 Jun 26, 2008 at 02:24 by #YLS#

Actually, funnily enough I remember like a few years ago, on british TV, CD:UK I think the show was? She was on next to Dizzee Rascal they were asked about illegal downloading and I’m not too sure but I think she actually sounded against piracy!

If someone can find a clip of that, it would be an interesting…

I urge people… Just because celebs endorse are actions, doesn’t mean there’s not a chance of becoming their tools to the point there no better than the industry we’re fighing.

21 Jun 26, 2008 at 02:26 by skeptical

@jay

all im saying is where is her free legal downloadable content? its just PR.

22 Jun 26, 2008 at 02:56 by ASEdf

At 20

Shut up, stupidface.

23 Jun 26, 2008 at 03:04 by skeptical

@#YLS#

well cd.uk was a kids program. i dont think it would be very responsible of her(especially early on in her career) to promote piracy to unintelligent 10 year olds

hmmm… guess you cant trust pop:)

24 Jun 26, 2008 at 03:11 by Spanky69

@ #20

WTF happened there? Did you get taken over by aliens, mid sentence?

25 Jun 26, 2008 at 03:15 by #YLS#

@23 skeptical

Oh don’t get me wrong, I understand that times change and people gain experience to change their views.

But… As others say we need to see a legal torrent or so come out to prove it, maybe a ‘Her own Favorites’ EP, as a sample of her talent.

I worry she’s just on the ‘Lets go share’ bandwagon. If an artist is going throw comments like that around we truely need to see support not PR. don’t you agree?

Plus last time I went down Tescos in the DVD isle I heard what I can guess is 10yr old saying to an even younger kid… I’ve already downloaded that one! (I doubt he’s got a credit card personally, lol)
