Mininova Hit By Massive DDoS Attack

Mininova, one of the leading BitTorrent sites, has been suffering from a massive DDoS attack over the past few days. Originating from a botnet spanning three continents, the attacks vary in strength and are causing the site to be completely inaccessible at times. The Mininova team is working on a solution.

mininovaDDoS attacks are not an unusual event for BitTorrent sites, with smaller sites suffering the effects more often than they’d like. However, to take out one of the big players requires some serious power, and that is exactly what Mininova is up against right now.

Mininova co-founder Niek confirmed to TorrentFreak that they have been suffering from a DDoS attack over the past few days. The site is currently being pounded by a botnet of hundreds of computers which is slowing the site down significantly and at times making it completely inaccessible.

Niek said that he has no idea who’s behind the attack or why they chose to target Mininova. This is not the first time the site has had to deal with a Denial of Service attack, but they haven’t witnessed one of this magnitude before.

It started on Thursday originating from three different continents, but seemed to wear off in the hours that followed. Today it’s back in full force. Mininova is used to serving millions of visitors a day, but even they are not equipped to handle an attack like this.

Today’s attack originates from Germany and Argentina and is 2 Gbit strong. The DDoS attack is maxing out the entire uplink and is hard to filter since it uses UDP connections.

Niek told TorrentFreak that they are working on a solution at the moment, and he hopes things will be back to normal soon.

I believe what happened over at revision 3 was OVERT rather then covert. What I mean is media defender’s servers announced exactly who they were. This attack on Mininova looks as if it will be covert IE. The Mininova chaps won’t have a clue who is doing this.

@08: ““The site is currently being pounded by a botnet of hundreds of computers”

Aren’t botnet’s usually hundreds of thousands strong?”

Yes but with modern botnets such as Storm or Kraken usually only a subsection of the botnet is commanded to caryy out the DoS attack.

300 home DSL connections with upload of 300 kbits/s equates to 400 Gb/hour which is enough to easily disable large websites. Consider that botnets are usually comprised of much more “effective” connections than home DSL as well such as businesses and governement institutions and botnets such as Storm can take out any website in the world and even small-to-medium sized (in terms of internet) countries (eg. Georgia in 2008)

    @ 16, you’re an idiot.

This type of attack can only effect them for the amount of time it goes on, which wasn’t long seeing as how I’m on mininova right now.

are we carriers for this bot ,as these attackers use any computer they can access to carry out these attacks ,can they use my computer if my remote access is turned on??

  • midime

Could this be a preemptive strike on preventing the new films, that started showing this weekend, from being torrented?

  • Borley

“are we carriers for this bot ,as these attackers use any computer they can access to carry out these attacks ,can they use my computer if my remote access is turned on??”

A word of warning to people out there – many public tracker users have this mistaken idea that they can “spot malware laden torrents”. Not saying private is better – however in most cases uploading is restricted to a small group of people if your talking private trackers. Certainly some malware spreaders are amatuers but some are not and they are getting very, very clever at remaining undetected.

The new generation of botnets are extremely sophisticated in spreading and remaining undetected – do not be so foolish as to believe you are not infected without a serious check (ie. download actual fixes specifically for Storm & Conficker – as new as possible… even then it’s no guarentee). Storm and Conficker have both been all but undetectable by AV & FW (many reasons: automated and on-the-fly changing and in the case of Storm automated responses to attempts to remove it using many methods including making it appear as though AV is running when it is not and using NTFS to hide themselves from the OS – nothing can see the files within windows).

FW penetration has pretty much been achieved – in many cases your FW will not detect these worms from downloading, spreading etc.

Half of the problem with Storm and conficker is that they’re just so sophisticated: they automatically morph, react to attempts to remove them and sometimes update every minute or so to be undetectable.

Don’t be so naive as to think “I cant see anything, my usual security apps see nothing therefore I must be clean”, these botnets are very sophisticated and you will not know your infected without a THOROUGH set of steps to ensure you are not. Governement, Military & Corporate networks have all been infected – so just how much more do you think you know over trained IT security personnel?

  • Shushunmire

@34 – If that was the case, they would have either gone after TPB first.

Am I the only one who thinks this might be someone other than the Music/Film/Software Industry and the hired thugs?

In my opinion, there is a lot of hate thrown at places like mininova.org and thepiratebay.org from the warez scene… And aren’t they* the type of people who would know exactly how to instigate such an attack? Although, i think its more likely that its the Music/Film/Software Industries hired pricks, I just thought its possible for there to be another set of people that would like to see places like mininova and thepiratebay go down…

Man, in case I didn’t make it clear before: Mininova sucks. It is one of the worst, crappiest, slowest and most unoriginal site out there which has all the bad parts of TPB: slow as all hell, low quality content, malware, hit & runners in plague proportions, crap search, fake files … but on top of all this it also has the capacity to have it’s own exclusive horde of malware ridden torrents.

Screw Mininova, I hope it’s DoS’d on a permanent basis until the owner can no longer afford to run the site and moves domain and I hope that the DoS follows him there and continues.

All the moronic people who know know better and think they are elite by shouting “TPB FTW”, stop making yourself look so pathetic and newb, your shouting about the lowest common denominator, crappiest tracker out there. Get yourself into where the people that know hang out: PRIVATE TRACKERS!!

To get registrations up just for 1 day and get members pouring in. Then they delete those files and registrations go up. So cut the crap about private trackers being safe.”

OK, your obviously a complete noob to all this private tracker business: you cannot see any files on private trackers before signing up. So how exactly is adding fake files going to bring in new members who cannot see said files. Also people don’t join private sites on the basis of one day some files were added – that’s ridiculous – and to boot if files are popular they’ll spread fast… hence why would that wierd tactic to gain users you just made up to impress people even be carried out. It wouldn’t you twit. Way yo make yourself look full of BS.

“Oh yeah: In some cases they take the money the members DONATE to keep the site running and F*CK OF with it. Seen that happen too.”

Yes, so have I… perhaps (as you sometimes have suspicions but don’t know) four or five times in 4 or so years years. Considering I’m quite active in the private tracker scene and there’s is/has been what… 200 (I’ll be very conservative) private trackers that people know of/want to be involved with in that time and during that time it’s so rare that it’s stupid to worry about it. In any case – no one is ever forced to donate… so non-issue.

“Bottom line: You need to know where to find what you’re looking for and go for TRUSTED uploaders.”

    Agreed.

“And use COMMON SENSE. Fakes will only fool newbies who just started on torrents.”

I’m afraid that in some cases common sense and experience of what looks right won’t save you. Some malware spreaders, mainly the PPI, botnet & RAT crowd are becoming very sophisticated with how they deliver their products.

Payloads attached to genuine files using, to use one example, the binder/cryptor/downloader BCD are undetectable to all AV. The author provides unique encryption stubs to paying users that usually take 1 -4 weeks for any AV company to become aware of them. Once it’s on your system BCD or part of the payload establishes a backdoor on target machines using the BITS service. Some/all firewalls have not been able to detect this yet, meaning the payload is free to, amongst whatever other purposes it’s there for, update itself every 10 minutes or whatever, using newly crypted malware – meaning no AV can detect ATM. In some cases you just don’t know that your infected – nothing can be done until you get off the internet long enough for (hopefully) your AV to be able to recognise the threat as it hasn’t updated… although you better hope you haven’t got something that automatically morphs itself.

Any in case your wondering, these people have are smart enough to not upload torrents with descriptions of “NO.1 CD BURNING APP WITH CRACK – WOOTS”, their upload will look like any others.

You’ll see at http://www.pay-per-install.org that some uploaders have infected torrents up for weeks or months – they’re smart enough to make finding out what infected you pretty hard as well.

But continue on in bliss if you wish, you probably wouldn’t know.

What I hate most of all is you stupid elitist pirates who think you’re somehow better because you belong to a private tracker or some idiotic forum where can you meet other losers who live in their mom’s basement just like you.

  • Bazz

I have been using TPB and Demonoid exclusively for all my torrenting life and i haven’t got a single fake file in years… i think the last one i got was like 4 years ago… just a little common sense will prevent this…

ALSO : to all of you elitist pricks out there… did it ever occur to you some poeple (like myself) couldn’t care less if the torrents are slow ? i can’t get over 300k/s since i live in a rural area (broadband has reached my home only 10 months ago…), so slow speeds don’t mean shit here… everything is slow…

  • Public Sites FTW

@KlaXXon: Some private trackers add those FAKES to be listed on Mininova and other INDEX sites and they want you to sign up to DL that .torrent file.
    The NON-Existent .torrent that is.
How do I know? I’ve seen it.

Example: The Day the Earth Stood Still
Dvd RIP. Months before it came out
    On PRIVATE Tracker.
    Listed on Mininova.

Example 2: Quantum Of Solace DVD RIp.
Again FAKE and again on Private tracker months before release.
Listed on Mininova and other index sites.

I could go on and on.

I use private trackers and Usenet mostly and I can assure you I got out of Mum’s hair a long time ago. I own own house outright actually.

“Most of us actually have a life, which is why I love mininova.”

Actually whether I have a life or not has nought to do with where I download files from but way to grasp at straws to prove how superior you are.

“Well moderated, few fakes (alot fewer than “Pirate Gay”), better content, and much more user friendly.”

You need a tracker to be user friendly, rofl.

“Long live mininova! Roll over and die already sceners. Your time was past when I threw out my Amiga.”

And yet I’m betting that you’d have just about nothing to download without the scene to supply it.

I could care less if you think you’re better than me or anyone else that can use a tracker or whatever the f**k you’re feeling small about, you need to go and get laid or something mate and think on the way you’re ego is bruised by an anonymous blog comment and how retarded that is to show it.
