The place where breaking news, BitTorrent and copyright collide

Prof. Richard Dawkins Advocates the Use of BitTorrent

Professor Richard Dawkins is one of the best known evolutionary biologists today. Affiliated with the University of Oxford and Berkeley, he is famous for his fierce and outspoken critique on religious institutions through his publications and documentaries. In common with many scientists, he wants his work to be read and seen by the public, even if that means ignoring copyright by going to The Pirate Bay.

dawkinsProfessor Richard Dawkins needs no introduction and any attempt at one will inevitably fall short considering his impressive track record. With several honorary doctorates and many awards, he is one of the best known and most renowned scientists today.

To top it off, Dawkins is the person who coined the term “meme”, which has started to lead a life of its own on the Internet.

An outspoken atheist and prominent critic of creationism, Dawkins has made several documentaries where he shows that the world would be a better place without religion. His most recent documentary Faith School Menace explored the detrimental effect faith schools have on children.

The documentary, presented by Dawkins, aired on Channel 4′s television channel More4 last month in the UK. The reviews of the film were mixed and as always highly correlated with the beliefs of the viewers. However, most of Dawkins’ regular followers were impressed. That is, the ones who got a chance to see it.

The majority of Dawkins fans are not located in the UK, and this caused the usual problems. Due to copyright restrictions only people in the UK could see the show, but luckily for people abroad Professor Dawkins had the ultimate solution.

“Is there any way to watch this from Australia? I’d really like to see it,” one commenter wrote on Dawkins official website, followed by another saying, “I´d like to see it, too. Is there any way how to watch it from Czech Republic?”

Dawkins, a man of answers rather than questions, had an easy solution.

“Do you mean that none of these work in your countries?” the Professor commented under his official account, while linking to several YouTube links and a torrent file on The Pirate Bay.

Ironically, one of the YouTube links has been taken down after a copyright complaint from Channel 4 (before it was set to private). The torrent file on The Pirate Bay, however, is still very much alive.

It appears that Professor Dawkins thinks that the world would be a better place without copyright restrictions, in this particular knowledge-spreading instance at least. Perhaps that’s a good topic for a future documentary?

TorrentFreak contacted Prof. Dawkins two weeks ago to find out more about his defiant position, but thus far we haven’t had a response.

    Boring?
that is the first time i have heard that sadi about Dawkins,
He a a cannibal, he eats people alive in arguments and debates, He is the opposite of boring,
Opposite as in the other side of the Universe opposite.

100 years from now this guy is going to be a Legend, if he already isn’t already.

I’ve been an atheist ever since I found out that such a word to describe my non-religion existed. I’ve watched all of Dawkins’ documentaries, and read most of his books.. I still think he’s an awful bitter fcuker though.. when he’s interviewing people he looks so full of contempt and it really comes across badly.

@1 are you by any chance religious?

  • astroboi

Some people equate “liking a person” with “Being best buddies and hanging out”. When you are Richard Dawkins you naturally have a pretty elite circle of friends. That doesn’t mean you or I can’t “like” him or that he is arrogant. You wouldn’t disparage an elite athlete for not joining your neighborhood team. I think he is fascinating but I realise he would probably find me dull and boring. I like him anyways.

Dawkins isn’t a bad guy, but some people dislike him because of his juvenile armchair intellectual fanboys. When he’s speaking on actual biology, he is extremely interesting. His work in his field is brilliant. Unfortunately, he spends a good deal of time stating the obvious about religion. Defeating men in debates who are actually stupid enough to believe in a supreme being with no evidence whatsoever isn’t exactly an accomplishment. I could do that. Now someone did need to say what he has said about teaching religion in schools, but again it is honestly common sense. I doubt any western nation other than the United States has people so stupid as to oppose the teaching of science in schools.

Actually his documentary on faith schools was all about britain.

  • Whatever

An educated prediction (based on past events):
At some point in the future, because of this article, he will respond that it was all a mistake and that he didn’t know that those links were “illegal” or something similar. Silenced by a contract with the channel from giving his own opinion. It could be very subtle like ‘you will not disclose information which will harm our company’.

    @3
The specific way those links were given (with the comment) it surely appears he knows his way around finding media on the internet. He must indeed be a filesharer.

  • lilars

I hate the word atheist. Why do we need a word for no religion. It only gives religion a standing that should not exist. The question should be”Are you a moral person?”I do not want to be in the same classification as #27.

  • Anonymous

    Dawkins is a brilliant person.
He’s not interested in being liked by you, he’s interested in uncovering and showing publicly verifiable evidence to as many people as he can about a variety of subjects.

He does this by highlighting them in talks, documentaries, and his writing. He’s helped to spearhead along with other people a change in the zeitgeist in regards to religion and atheism, especially in the US.
Idiots will talk about not liking him (why? he’s a pretty funny guy and puts forth his argument eloquently) though he’s done a lot of good, because they find his views on religion to be so awful

They can’t even overlook that when they see that he advocates filesharing for his programmes.

    Great man.

  • ~_~

Lol ok since nobody seems to be discussing copyright infringement…

This prof. is a tool but I will give him this, creationism is a crock and makes most Christians look like fools. The earth is millions of years old. A minority of Christians believe the gap theory which is the only theory that makes any sense. That is, there was a gap between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2. Some translations state “And the earth became waste and void…” Between creation and this void there was an untold period of time where Lucifer rebelled, a third of the angels fell, and the creation alive on the earth at the time was judged.

Christmas is also a crock with its pagon origins… I’m a Christian but I’m against religion. Religion is a system that is versus Christ.

  • John

@30 well that was a stupid thing to say…

I like watching Richard, but I know his kind; the arrogant biology-come-ethicist. Every university has one, they’re usually the dean of Physiology though.

Anyway, I’m suprized that his fan base is mainly arrogant types like him. Usually opposites attract… I would have expected meek and never individuals to like him more.

Basically, he takes ethics to totally unprepared people who don’t know how to retaliate. Throw him to Bruno Latour and other post modernists and then it would be a fair fight. As it is, he’s just an intellectual bully.

But hey, people love drama. That shit sells.

  • whocares

    Dawkins is god.

    Oh wait…

  • misrep

@35: Arrogant types? Give me a break. RD fans are just happy to FINALLY have a voice. To hear someone who says what has needed saying for too long to comprehend.

The real “arrogant types” are the people who call themselves religious, and who think that their behavior doesn’t matter–because god forgives them, whatever they do. These are the people who have shoved their doctrines up our asses for eons.

great story.. now i can lend an ear. and whichever of you mentioned Sam Harris? also great. EVERYONE should read S. Harris’s book “the end of faith”, and the shorter but similar read “letter to a christian nation”. in both books he quite capably blasts the notions of the ignorant, and delivers a thorough torrent of detrimental effects of the lack of thought that goes into the average persons belief system. ‘end of faith’ focuses on how belief systems shape the way people ACT, which in turn shapes the world we currently live in; REALITY. religeous extremists are a perfect example, but there are many more…

cant wait to watch me some Dawkins!!

  • Sinstar

For those who think Dawkins is outspoken against religion, you should have a look at some of Christopher Hitchens’ stuff.

He makes Dawkins look like a jolly old choir master

  • zenithmaster

I see the typical accusations of arrogance. I have not yet seen an interview with the man, in which he has been anything but polite and soft-spoken; neither has he been patronising or belittling in any way. People that call him have never actually attended a lecture, seen an interview or read a book about him. The religious freaks know they have lost the argument, so they turn to slander. Sadly, they have been very successful in this.

  • zenithmaster

Should read: “People that call him arrogant have…”

  • root@amsix

What is this nonsense about it being hard to like Richard? I have not found it remotely difficult to appreciate everything this man says and does, plus I think he’s a really funny and kind man.

Learn to get a clue and listen (or read) before you spout your bullcrap about him not being easy to like. Idiots.

Personally I believe in God. That’s it. A world that needs no God is ok too as long as it respects my will to believe in one ;)

Prof. Dawkins has my respect for his work even though I know a small portion of it. And he went a step higher today knowing he shares.

As I said, evolution is there. Some will be left behind, some will be in the very top of the wave.

  • TerribleTony

He did actually delete a comment of mine on his youtube channel regarding a discussion he had with another prominent scientist (I forget his name right now), in which I related a specific comment made by the interviewee to file-sharing and the positive impact this could have.

Looks like he has done his research since and changed his views. Now that is the sign of a true scientist. If you find your belief to be incorrect, you change it. And this is exactly what he has done.

    Big up Prof Dawkins!

  • Ergo

53: Yep, you pretty much have that right on the money.

He is worshipped (ha!) because he spends all his time attacking religious people, even though his beliefs are, in their own way, religious.

  • Chris

Kexler and ergo, why dont you look him up then, dumb asses!

His work for the last 30 years has been the promotion of scientific literacy with a focus on evolutionary biology. His work as a scientist who does research is in his past, not his present. You don’t have to be an active scientist to still call yourself an evolutionary biologist or promote it’s understanding.

  • Travis McCrea

This is a little off topic, but I hate how people always think that you have to be atheist to hate religion.

Deists also are not into religion, but we also believe in a higher power of some kind.

I personally hate religion, and it annoys me to no end. However, I feel that there is an afterlife and I feel that while we may have evolved, something had to have been playing a role to allow us to become such complex organisms beyond just evolution.

While not all deists are into Intelligent Design (a lot are into the idea that God has played no role in the development of Earth) — I think that scientists often discount ID as a form of creationism and its not. Anyway, thats enough rant on my Intelligent Design thoughts too.

God gave us reason, not religion.

    Sigh.

Schools without God are not better schools—no honest look at American Education could deny the devolution of quality, standards, productivity parallels increasing lack of freedom to discuss the concept of God, much less any authentic search.

Einstein said that at the age of 12 he determined to know God. He studied light for a purpose. Gosh. How sad if his inquisitive mind would have been stifled in that arena.

    Sigh.

If more individuals were more tenacious in their soulful search, and looked more inward more often, then more would know their own true identity and these arguments would vanish, like melting ice rejoining the atmosphere. Instead we slide into a massive car crash pointing the finger at each other, and swearing at the sky.
You would come to realize that we are still imbeciles after all. Interestingly, by our own choice.

  • Manny

I’m an atheist but I find Dawkins pretty annoying. The problem is he sounds just like a religious fanatic with his harsh attacks on religion, which kinda defeats the whole purpose of atheism. In my view he has become another Glenn Beck/Michael Moore, trying to force his views on people through sheer forcefulness and anger, and the way his followers fawn over him is very “cult” like, in effect making atheism into just another new religion.

Just don’t go to church on sunday if you don’t believe in God. It’s simple, atheists don’t need to behave like religious zealots.

  • Tard-Spnaker!

Travis McCrea, either you don’t understand Intelligent design or you’re a bull-headed twot (or both).

OF COURSE it’s creationism hiding inside a pantomime horse.
