Swedish Pirate Party Heading for EU Parliament
Written by enigmax on April 30, 2009A poll carried out by a major Swedish newspaper predicts that the Pirate Party will grab around 5.1% of the votes in the upcoming European Union elections. This means that the movement, which has gathered huge momentum due to the Pirate Bay ‘guilty’ verdict, will get a seat in the EU Parliament.
Support for the Swedish Pirate Party really began to surge with the introduction of the IPRED anti-piracy legislation. Its membership already surpassed that of the Green Party, with more than half of men under 30 reportedly considering voting for them in the 2009 European Parliament elections.
Then a guilty verdict was handed down in the Pirate Bay trial – an absolute gift for the Pirate Party, whose ranks swelled at an unprecedented rate. It now sits at just over 41,750 members (latest stats here) and at the current growth rate the party will be Sweden’s third largest in membership before the weekend.
Now a new poll conducted by Swedish newspaper DN.se predicts that the Pirate Party will get 5.1% of all votes in the upcoming EU elections this June – enough to guarantee a seat in the European Parliament. The poll further shows that the party is the second largest party among younger voters in the age group 18-30.
“This poll confirms our recent phenomenal growth in support, and says there will be pirates in Brussels after this election,” Pirate Party Leader Rick Falkvinge told TorrentFreak. “Scoring like this in a poll will further enhance support for the party. While there’s still much work to be done, we’re on the home stretch and have the goal in plain sight. June 7 is election day. On the morning of June 8, we’ll know.”
“In January of 2006, we set sail for new civil liberties land by bypassing today’s politicians and talking directly to voting citizens — that is, with the goal of kicking some of today’s politicians out of office. It appears we’ve just heard the first LAND AHOY! from the watch,” Falkvinge added.
When the Swedish Pirate Party was founded three years ago, the majority of the mainstream press viewed them with skepticism, with some simply laughing them away. Times have changed though. The Pirate Party is now a serious competitor for the established parties in Sweden, and on its way to conquer Europe.

Now I hope other Pirate Parties from Europe improve their situation, too.
everyone who will vote Pirate Party has to convince 2 other people to do so…that means a solid 15%
Please, please vote pirate party.. there are hordes of peoplle *who will not vote* they need some convincing
AND NOW
ACTA CANT HIDE
I do hope several NEW parties are in the brewing, waiting for June 8.
A decisive victory in Sweden can embold other countries to do it too.
And, if that comes to pass, I think, I, for the first time in my life, will register as member to a party. And actualy VOTE for the 1st time. No, I’m not 18. I’m 44. And up until now, I’ve refused to vote for any party. They don’t deserve it, had made NOTHING to deserve it, and I don’t see myself represented in their ideals and actions.
As me, how many are there? How many political indifferents would rise and take a stand?
Land AHOY! Indeed!!
after reading all the pirate bay trial stuff and all, i feel that piracy is the best way to go.
i’m gonna support and fight for freedom when i grow up.
great job. greetings from PP Austria :)
All I can say is: GO VOTE!
Don’t be an armchair revolutionary, go out and actually DO SOMETHING about it.
I know I’ll be there, casting my vote and shoutin’ me Arrrrr-right!
I hope that the Australian Pirate Party will be able to be up and running for our next Federal Election, I want to vote for them, if not I’ll have to wait till I can vote for them!
What exactly will *1* seat do?
Heh that shore will bring more attention towards what people actually think and not big IP/CR lobbies sponsors :)
May be 1 seat will not have much vote power so far but it will show politics that large part of electorate sees it as a problem and wants it to be solved. So more pirate parties in other countries and more politics from non-pirate parties starting to play in that direction too.
The European open internet is under imminent threat http://www.blackouteurope.eu/
@Kel – even just “one” seat is enough to bring a voice of dissent at how things are currently done to the government.
I hope Pirate Party UK gets started soon, our civil liberties are in pretty dire straits. (Lol, just made a seafaring reference without meaning to!)
Encourage others Kel.
Also many deals are done by politicians behind closed doors, when we have one of our own in the chambers things wont go so well for the corrupt.
Guys..is torrentz.com down??
Joined my local Pirate party. I normally don’t bother with politics, they’re all a bunch of self serving bastards. This time, I want to see change and am doing something I believe in.
You can’t beat them in courts or lobbying. Changing the politicians is the only way.
I can’t stress how important this is to vote Pirate party. If you love the internet and enjoy freedom of speech, you have to vote PP or face the death of the internet. It’s that simple.
voting won’t change anything, power attracts the corruptible, the eu parlement is merely a waste of money and a useless coverup for the totalitarian nature of europe
@8
Is the PPÖ up for election on June 7?
the PP represented in EU-parliament is great, being still able to vote for them (for my interests) is even greater. Now hopefully the big parties will take some time to assimilate the PP and make them meaningless, for example by using their wording and ideas, but only implementing or misleading laws/changes…enough time to change the direction of the current development, and enough time for the youth to wake up and learn about the technology beside a callphone.
Come on People!
Let’s have our voice and make some History.
THEY HAVE MY VOTE. ARR!
A decisive victory, will not only put PP in the Parliament. Will put it on the minds of everyone else.
What does this guys want? Why that name? Pirates?? PIRATES??
That, will wake them.
Hopefully they’ll find a GOOD, better, a GREAT, PR person. Above all else, the purppose of a PP, right now, is to alert, educate, call the masses.
They’ll most probably don’t have that much power to effect major changes, or, even to initiate a change in legislation. But, the mere presence there, may very well be a catalyst for “headlines” and “news”.
That is the major problem right now, actually get Media coverage in the correct perspective. Or, at least, a fair and just coverage.
Maybe, just maybe, the PP, can achieve partialy that.
Land AHOY! Land ahoy me mates…
Just been to http://www.blackouteurope.eu and used http://www.blackouteurope.eu/act/letter_to_meps.html BUT the http://www.writetothem.com site wouldn’t let me send the modified letter to all my MEP’s because it looks like a duplicate. I Google’d all my MEP’s for their email addresses and sent the email directly. I sent to 8 MEP’s and 1 local MP. I had to skip 1 MEP as he is under investigation on corruption / expenses claims :-)
If I can do more I WILL.
Arrrrr!!!
riaa ,, mpaa ,, ur going to get a fight u won’t beleive!!!
arrr! ,, there are millions and millions of us!!!
arrr ,, man the cannons!!
I don’t get it. Is this a European vote or what?
There’s lots of people saying to vote but no one saying how exactly to do that…
And…when this happens in sweden, it will encourage other EU-countries to follow. If each country put 1 or 2 pirates in the EU-parliament, suddenly pirates will be able to influence laws by sheer numbers and make some noticable difference….
FIRST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! XD
What one seat will do is give one pirate a right to speak at the EU parliament and make our message heard!

This is a newspaper poll: not actual votes. We will have to wait until June to see whether it translates into actual votes.
I recently got my citizenship in Sweden, how do i register to vote?
Getting a seat in the EU gives the PP a few things.
1. It paves the way for seat 2, 3, 4….
2. It gives the PP a chance to be the “deciding factor” in a close call vote.
3. It gives other political parties the thought that maybe the people don’t care about them (their ideals) as much anymore.
4. It gives the PP an element of compromise with which other parties must conceed to get the PP’s vote.
@newro
the only parties with candidates up for election in this vote, are Sweden and Germany, with the Italian PP running one as an independant.
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
LOL, look out EU, tehre be pirates on the horizon arrrrghhh!
and then the most awesome final battle to end all battles starts…

GOOOOO SWEDEN, Go pirate Party, vote vote vote the current corrupt politicians fvckers our of existence.
@15
on the template letter it says the two votes were end of march and 212 April. So is writing to my MEP’s going to do any good now ?
Also not being on the electoral register does that mean that they don’t represent me ?
cheers
sorry i meant that as a reply to number 13 not number 15
Thats absolutely amazing!! First the cyber retaliation on the lawyers and lobbyists and now this!! I had forgotten why democracy is the best system of government in the world and now I remember. Fair representation for a growing number of people who disagree with the policies being made, brilliant.
Now I’m only hoping this wakes up us Americans and we can start doing something!! Americans: Have you noticed that our civil liberties are slowly going away? Bush was a blight on our society and we need to fix what he did.
“Any society that would give up a little liberty for a little safety will deserve neither and soon lose both.”
Ben Franklin
But this is one cause I will register for and vote for, fvck the RIAA/MPAA and corrupt politicians, Go Sweden, Go Pirate Party… Yarrrr you mafo’s
>Now I’m only hoping this wakes up us
>Americans and we can start doing
>something!!
You would first have to change your voting system to “allow” a third party. Your “winner takes it all” sooner or later converges, purely mathematically, into two parties.
In Sweden, the PP had the 5% burden, which was difficult by itself. In the US, they would have to actually _win_ in a district (this means, to have more votes than republicans or democrats), which is possible only in theory, but impossible in practice.
How do you guys have the balls to actually call yourself a democracy??

Actually we are a republic here in the U.S.A.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic
I have 5 guaranteed votes from me and friends.
Cheers PP!
A free internet is one thing. But why would I vote for thieves?
I wouldn’t vote for a rapist party.
Ok, let’s go forward :)
to T.Brains:
They are not thieves, liar !!!
@45
It’d be possible to elect a member of the pirate party to Congress, we’d just have to get all members of the pirate party to move to one Congressional district. Preferrably, one that’s already split between Republicans and Democrats.
@T. Bains
You poor poor deluded fool.
You compare the exchange of 0’s and 1’s to stealing. I don’t ever recall walking in to a shop and slipping CD’s or DVD’s inside my jacket.
If you fail to see the difference, you truly are one deluded fool.
Okay now I have to carpool to work. Geez, I guess i’m ripping off the auto industry for sharing a ride.
Fool…
Awesome, great job.
European Pirate Powers Activate, Form of…
this just in:
The poll published Thursday in the Stockholm newspaper Dagens Nyheter shows the Pirate Party’s backing has surged after a court verdict against The Pirate Bay file-sharing site. Four men behind The Pirate Bay were convicted this month of copyright violations and sentenced to a year in prison.
The survey of about 1,500 people shows 5.1 percent of Swedish voters support the Pirate Party. Four percent is the minimum for a seat in the European Parliament. The error margin was 1.8 percentage points.
The Pirate Party was founded in 2006 with the aim of legalizing noncommercial file-sharing of music and films on the Internet.
IFPI Count de Monet: “The People Are Revolting!”
Executive Louis XVI: “You said it—they stink on ice!”
Actually having to do some work. Will be tough on them.
The best punishment you can give a person is hem ‘m work for EU parliament, haha.
Have a lot of fun Captain Jack Sparrow. Please fill out form X2B4CC first.

Congratulations to the Swedish Pirate Party! I am very proud of your political party progression of great successes in such a short period of time.I hope the success will continue to expand rapidly so that we have a political voice in the legislation process. I and the majority of people from the U.S.A are supporting your party 100%. I hope we start to form our own Pirate Party in the U.S soon. Keep up the great works!
Best wishes,
Khmuprince
This just goes to show what pirates are willing to do once you piss them off!
Rick Falkvinge you have the support of h33t
bring it to the forum dude
http://www.h33t.com we are full of it and we mean it
I will vote for them.
However, they have 50000 members to go to take a change to get a voting position. And I’m not citizen in Sweden to vote for them. :(
Every bit counts.
- One seat at the EU counts.
- Boycotting counts.
- Public displays counts.
- Even downloading more counts LoL
- Writing your representative counts.
Every step people takes no matter how small counts toward what we all want.
First of all, all Pirate Parties have to be on the same page … here in the USA, the Pirate Party actually endorsed Obama … that’s right, Obama … the radical Marxist who still pretends to be a “Centrist” when in fact, he is nothing but a tool of the establishment … go watch “The Obama Deception” if you have any doubts … you can watch it on YouTube or download it on TPB … this inexperienced clown is a bigger threat to freedom than Bush ever was … and if the Pirate Party here in the land of Hollywood, the MPAA and RIAA continue to endorse “leaders” of this ilk, all hope is lost … we better get our acts together on an international level if we hope to make any significant changes … endorsing puppets who support the status quo = FAIL … I hope my Swedish and European Brothers take heed.
Considering starting a Scottish Pirate party here. From there we could leapfrog into a British one I suppose….
Problem is getting money back to the copyright holders (heresy I know) to continue the industry allbeit in a different format.
Perhaps a pan European digital library paid for by a compulsory “Internet Liscence” akin to the BBC and give grants to studios to produce material for distrobution…
Anyone wanting to export has to accept that this is how it would work in Europe, that we have technocratic solution to the problem.
Incidentaly, who here from the Blue and Gold continent sees themselves as “European” as opposed to French, German, British or the like?
67/Fin:
I do, I am German when it comes to other Europeans and European when it comes to others.
65/Obama Fail:
Rofl, I like it how you use crazy videos to justify crazy opinions. How about you actually educate yourself using books and libraries instead of funny videos on the internet? You know, stuff with actual depth and reason.
Anyone else:
What are you waiting for, that somebody else founds a PP in your country? That way nothing will ever be done. Screw up your courage and start it yourself! Others will follow.
KEEP THE INTERNET FREE
STOP ONLINE PIRACY
Re post 54;
Your failure to see the difference between taking someone’s work whilst denying them fair recompense for it is far more delusional than anything T.Brains has said (though his analogy was a little extreme). What’s the difference between illegally sharing 1s & 0s and illegally reproducing any other work or intellectual property? I’m sure you’d be a bit pissed if you spent a year writing a book and on the day of release you found out that someone had copied it and sold it to all your fans first.
And just because you do not physically steal something, does not make it any less of a crime. Online crimes are just as real as any other. You wouldn’t be very happy if someone empted your bank account using the internet now would you? It would make no difference to you whether it was an online crime or a bandito with
six-shooters had that robbed the town bank… you still wouldn’t have your money.
It’s also worth bearing in mind that there is no law against sharing a car to work – there is against copyright infringement. In fact, you could argue that as the cars were designed to hold more than one person and the automotive industry is aware of this, your analogy is decidedly ill-considered and fatuous.
Having said all that… keep the internet free, just don’t rip off artists who are trying to make a decent living out of music. Sure, Metallica and some of the other stadium bands have behaved like complete tossers about the whole thing. For every Metallica though, there are hundreds of little bands trying to scrape a living out of music and it’s guys like Pirate Bay that ensure they get no money out of it. If this continues there will be no money in music unless you have big money backing from the big four. End result…? All the small alternative bands jack it in for 9-5 jobs, we end up with a load of manufactured pop bullshit in a cultural wasteland akin to watching X-Factor repeats ad infinitum.
But as long as it saves you a few quid…
Hope you get MORE than one-seat,get people in there that KNOW about the INTERNET,for a change.
The US Pirate Party could use a good boost. They still don’t even have a huge say in just one state. But if they decided to come to Ohio by the time I’m 18 (2 years) then I’d probably help vote for them.
@ 69 Boal
“65/Obama Fail”
Actually, it was 66 … child, you fail right from the start.
“Rofl, I like it how you use crazy videos to justify crazy opinions.”
And I like how you call something “crazy” without offering any evidence to the contrary … the inexperienced imbecile has broken every campaign promise … would you like me list them for you, or are you capable of using Google without me holding your hand?
“How about you actually educate yourself using books and libraries instead of funny videos on the internet?”
One needs to “educate” oneself using “books and libraries” in order to highlight his voting record, his unwavering support for the status quo, his broken campaign promises, his numerous ties to Wall Street, Hollywood and the establishment? The video simply points out the obvious … only an indoctrinated fool who chooses to close his eyes will find it “funny.” Once again, try that Google thing … do a little research, use your brain … oh, and turn off that HD propaganda machine where you get your nightly fix of Hollywood-approved disinformation.
“You know, stuff with actual depth and reason.”
And what Acorn funded publications would you like to recommend? Do you even have the slightest clue of what the heck I’m talking about? Seriously, you sound like the type of cretin who actually believes that there’s a “hole” in an ozone “layer” … but the point which you obviously missed was simply this: pirates MUST get on the same page politically if we are to succeed in the US, Europe, Asia and everywhere else. Allow me to reiterate for the benefit of someone with a short attention span like yourself … while I hope that the cited Swedish newspaper is correct in its prediction (and that many more political victories will follow), it’s not going to amount to squat if Pirate Parties support or endorse current tools of the establishment. Got it, now … or should I draw you a pretty diagram with rainbows and unicorns? <3
GOOOOO SWEDEN, Go pirate Party, vote vote vote the current corrupt politicians fvckers our of existence.

Does this mean we’re going to see a flood of EU dox hit wikileaks so that everyone can actually read them?
or heaven forbid, torrents?
Transparency in politics? It’s more likely than you think.
@70..
Obviously you have done no research..

It’s so wrong im not even going to bother posting a response to it.. You obviously haven’t been on the Internet very long.. Unfortunate but we all must remember there are many people who cannot afford internet services even these days.. When they do indeed retain services they bring their preconceived opinions with them… Sad but this is the case of poster #70…
Kip, one do not need to register to vote in Sweden, if you got a Citizenship, just wait for your voting card to arrive in the mail when all other swedes get them. That is, unless you got it to recently for the bureaucrats to get it for you but you should be fine. If you are abroad thou it may be more difficult, just ask the embassy.
God I hope they win a seat.
For people to get pissed off enough to elect a member of a single-issue party is rare. It’ll send a crystal clear message:
Passing crappy laws to try and prop up a dying business models is NOT acceptable in a democratic society. It WILL cost you votes.
Pirate Party FTW!!!
People constantly pretend like the pirate party is only a single issue party, i.e. about legalizing filesharing and “stealing”.
That’s just not true.
The fact is, we have in the last 10 years made leaps and bounds away from civil liberties and towards big brother across the world in very sad, meaningful ways. There are cameras on our streets, there are wiretapping laws and anti-terrorist laws that basically strip ANY suspect of their constitutional rights and completely changing the game. Many times the “in dubio pro reo” base assumption of innocent until proven guilty has been inverted and the defendant needs to prove his innocence instead.
Our whole system is crumbling because of fear, lack of education and morals in the political substance and a general disconnect between ruling powers and voters.
As it is now, you have a freshly passed law in Germany that allows ISP and prosecutors/police to cooperate in such a way that if you are suspected of clicking a webpage more than once on purpose, and that webpage is on a “contains childporn”(which they define and nobody has public insight into, obviously) blacklist, they can, in realtime, link your IP back to your identity because the ISP signed/agreed to cooperation and start a case SOLELY based on the attempt of accessing a webpage and the proof of burden that this was an accident rests COMPLETELY on YOU.
So anyone who knows what a tinyurl is, a webpage with frames or redirection, or a html can guess what happens if you send someone a preformatted homepage/url/mail with the REAL target being one of the sites on this blacklist.
For the technologically challenged:
This law that is SUPPOSEDLY for protecting against childporn(which is ridiculous to begin with, as it deals solely with webpage access and nothing about stopping it in the real world) can be simply used to get people into real trouble and deep sh1t if you can get them to open a mail or click a link or visit a webpage.
It doesn’t get more complicated than that, a simple attempt to access will suffice and suddenly YOU have to make up a way of proving that it was someone else that made you visit that page and not on purpose.
I’m sorry, but that is just deeply, deeply disturbing and a 100% abuse of political power to do something that has completely no benefit whatsoever except for enabling further censorship and control measures over a society.
These things are why you need someone computer/internet/IT literate in the government, not just because some kids like their music free.
@ 45
