Transmission Moves Forward With 2.0 Release

Transmission, the most used non-commercial BitTorrent client, has reached a new milestone with the release of version 2.0. The community driven application, installed on millions of computers worldwide, is now faster and smarter than ever before. We get the lowdown from Transmission developer Charles Kerr.

transmissionTransmission saw its first public release nearly five years ago. Since then the free, multi-platform application has gathered a steady user-base of millions of users.

Transmission became the default BitTorrent client on various Linux distributions including Ubuntu, and it is also one of the most-used Mac BitTorrent clients.

This week Transmission’s development reached an important milestone as the stable version of Transmission 2.0 was released. Transmission, often praised by its users for being full-featured but lightweight, has geared up for the increasing demands of BitTorrent users today.

TorrentFreak spoke with Transmission developer Charles Kerr who walked us through some of the most notable improvements in the latest Transmission release.

“Transmission 2.0′s code is faster and smarter,” Charles Kerr said. “We’ve profiled the code for CPU bottlenecks and removed them. Startup, peer management, blocklists, and verifying local data are all faster. Transmission 2.0 is also smarter about detecting and handling network lag.”

“For 24/7 remote seedboxes, headless systems, and embedded systems, we’ve made Transmission-daemon easier to build, added hooks for scripting, and shrunk the memory footprint. Transmission-daemon has one of the smallest footprints — if not the smallest — of any BitTorrent client.”

Transmission takes pride in being volunteer-based and non-commercial, unlike bigger clients such as uTorrent, Vuze, and BitComet. Charles told TorrentFreak that this also comes with a downside, because future development relies on its community of volunteers.

“It means development happens only when volunteers are available,” he said. “For example, if any of your readers are Windows or ExtJS programmers who want to work on the Windows or Web clients, the Transmission team would like to hear from them.”

Indeed, you’re reading it right, a native Windows application is a serious option if there are skilled volunteers available. For now, however, Transmission’s expansion possibilities are limited to the other platforms while it has to settle for the title of the most-used BitTorrent client without a Windows version.

It’s definitely preferable on OSX to the mac versions of the larger clients. Good going Transmission team!

still can’t add trackers to a torrent >.>

    @ Phoenix:

So clicking properties>trackers>edit trackers is too hard to do?

Lol, was thinking the same thing! How hard can it be :-)

I prefer KTorrent on my Ubuntu Ultimate v2.6.

  • Ninja

Cool. Every development in bt scene is welcome. I’ll still use utorrent but having options is what makes competition and keeps things evolving =)

Wish the best to Transmission community!

    @ Phoenix
    adding trackers is simple.

thats whats great about transmission, its simple

All that and you get software freedom too. No need to wonder if the program is screwing you via some back door. The limits of how much you can inspect the program is up to you.

now your what i call a headless troll.

I can’t wait for the 2.0 update to hit the ubuntu repos. This program just keeps getting better. It’s a shame that there’s still no version for winblows users. Microsoft doesn’t play well with others, sorry. I think transmission for windows would give uTorrent a run for it’s money.

@15 You’re what I call an idiot without spelling skills.

@14 Being “commercial” doesn’t make it non-free. Vuze is just as free as Transmission.

@16 If you’ve got a router that supports OpenWRT and a 16 MB or larger Flash chip, it might be possible to get Transmission installed on the router, and just use the web UI from Windows. Like the developers already said, though, they need people with skills in other areas, such as Windows (and OpenWRT, for the above possibliity).

Finally some good news on TF. Recently you’ve been posting such down and depressing posts.

Bring on the innovation! Congratulations on reaching 2.0 Transmission!

I just run uTorrent inside Wine on Ubuntu.

  • Zax

uTorrent for Mac, on the other hand… not doing so well. It just came out of beta, I know, so I won’t bash it to hard.

Plenty of problems and basic features missing from it that makes it a joke compared to Transmission.

I hope they develop uTorrent for Mac more, though, since it’s all I used on the PC for the last 5 years.

Why use Transmission on Windows when you got uTorrent…?

  • Deville

    @22: Because it’s OSS..?

  • kjhe

    @20

That’s insane, because there are tons of linux clients that do better than µTorrent.

  • Balderdash

    Transmission is great!

Thanks go to all the team who make this happen for us.

    Windows?,What’s that?

  • spc

Transmission is a yardstick when it comes to torrent clients, it isn’t common to have native GTK, Qt and OSX client.

What’s more cli client, daemon, remote-control and web-control interface – bottom line this project is awsome.

I don’t see anything nearly as mature or versatile as transmission.

  • akels

Unfortunately in Transmission there isn’t option to download in sequental order! That is the reason why I use qbittorrent as default.

  • Rommy Jackson

As far as I’m concerned, Windows can keep their Bit Torrent programs to themselves. It’s exactly the crap downloaded from these networks that opens to doors to trojan horses and a host of other maladies. Using P2P and Bit Torrent is synonymous with popping the cork on a bottle of bad wine.

The thing that Charles needs to understand is that FUUUUUUUUCKKKKK Windows. Dont worry about developing for their terrain, they already have a couple of really good clients such as uTorrent.

The focus should be on making sure that Transmission runs exceptionally well on Linux and Mac.

Which so far it does. I’ve been using the client since 1.3 and I can say Charles and the gang have been doing an excellent job, I’ve seen many improvements. This is the reason I have donated numerous times (though not recently).

too bad the private trackers haven’t kept up and have it banned as a beta client still.

utorrent will never be beat on Windows. No point coming out with Windows version Transmission.

  • WLS

    I prefer qBittorrent.

I will give Transmission a test when the update becomes available for my Linux system.

They should forget a Windows version.

  • Matt

After floating around between numerous torrent clients on Ubuntu (including uTorrent in Wine) I finally settled on Transmission. It’s simple and easy-to-use, yet highly flexible and capable. Clients such as Deluge and KTorrent are alright, but Transmission is the only truly consistent client available for Linux today. Congratulations on the v2.0 release, Transmission team!

I love using Transmission, I just hate that it chews through all of my “free” memory and leaves my with a big pile of “inactive” memory. These are NOT the same as people on Transmission’s site says they are. My Snow Leopard system runs ten times slower after downloading a torrent and having nothing but “inactive” memory remaining.

  • lizardking

@27 – You can do it, just takes a bit of fanagaling. Set the maximum simultaneous downloads to 1 or 2 or whatever, then organize the torrents in the main window in the order you want them to download.
