Is The President of Turkey a Movie Pirate?

Twitter is an excellent medium for world leaders to keep the people informed on their thoughts and actions, but it can also lead to awkward situations. Yesterday evening the Turkish President Abdullah Gül tweeted that he enjoyed watching the Oscar nominated movie ‘The King’s Speech’ at home with his wife. An interesting status update, since the film has not premiered in Turkish theaters yet, nor is it available on DVD anywhere else.

gulAbdullah Gül is a political heavyweight. He previously served as Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs in Turkey, and in 2007 he was elected as the 11th Turkish President.

As President he met with all the major world leaders but Gül also likes to keep in touch with the public, for which he started to use Twitter a while ago. Gül, who has a verified account on Twitter, occasionally tweets his thoughts about national and international politics, and also shares more personal stuff from time to time.

One tweet in particular caught the attention of many of his 185,000+ followers yesterday. Before wishing everyone a good weekend, Gül mentioned how he enjoyed watching “The King’s Speech” at home with his wife the other day.

“Watched The King’s Speech at home with my wife the other day. Really a very beautiful movie,’ he tweeted.

gul

The Turkish President is not the only one who enjoyed the film of course. With twelve Oscar nominations it is considered to be one of the best movies of 2010 by many people.

However, the tweet nevertheless resulted in a small uproar among his followers. The big question is how he could have possibly watched the film at home, without breaking copyright law.

The King’s Speech is not available on DVD anywhere in the world, and the film has not even premiered in Turkish movie theaters yet. There is, however, a good copy of the film available on BitTorrent, Usenet and various other file-sharing platforms (and on the streets).

This led many of his Twitter followers to conclude that their President is in fact a movie pirate. How else would it be possible for him to watch the movie at his home in Turkey?

In a response to the tweet many people asked Gül where he downloaded the movie, and whether he prefers Usenet or BitTorrent. Thus far, the President has not replied to the inquiries, but if he does we will add the response here.

Perhaps Gül can do something about the Turkish Pirate Bay block now? I assume many of his followers would also like to grab a copy of The King’s Speech following this shining presidential endorsement.

Update: Without going into detail Gül said in a response “an illegal film would not be given to me.” Perhaps his staff managed to get a super-exclusive deal to show a private screening to the President? We’d love to hear more about it.

It’s not uncommon for people with a lot of money or high social stature to rent the actual film just like a theater would. Most likely he is a pirate, but speculation without the inclusion of other possibilities is simply retarded.

Wow, what stupid news item. Did Obama pirate it too when he watched it at the White House? No. duh.

Many high placed offcials do get a copy of a movie before an DVD release, so I don’t se why this would be a pirated version.

Government rating agencies receives all movies long before the release.
Offering copies to higher ups from there should not be surprising.

In a country where TPB, YouTube, WordPress, DailyMotion, Google Sites as well as a bunch of other websites are blocked, the president is a pirate? That sounds almost impossible, and somehow I think there’s more to this than meets the eye.

Him being a diplomat who travels a lot is probably a more likely answer. He probably bought the DVD while traveling abroad — I believe the DVD is already available in the US.

    • Papa

No, it’s not available anywhere, as stated in the article. It’s however highly likely that a president of a state would completely legally be allowed a high quality copy of a film he wants. I would, however, love it if it turned out he had his own seedbox on a TL or SCC! haha

The sites you’ve mentioned had been blocked due to a court decision. However, these problems are solved between sites and courts and the blockages were removed. You can freely access to these sites now in Turkey.

Actually, this blockage was only DNS based. If you were using DNS servers provided by ISP’s, you were not be able to access these sites. However, everybody uses OpenDNS or Google Public DNS in Turkey, so nobody is affected from this blockage. Moreover, when Youtube was still blocked, Mr. Gül said in a tweet that “it is very silly to block Youtube in Turkey”. It can be said that, it was an ordinary cencorship or sth. similar.

This is very hard to understand Turkey :)

    • DarknessFallz

why ignorantly say he has a DVD when it clearly said in the artical that NO DVD COPIES are available LEGALLY.

Admitting to watching a movie isn’t illegal, no exceptions.

The director of “Hostel 2″ learned this the hard way..A lot of reviewers and critics downloaded the movie, gave it a bad review, and the director more or less attacked the internet for it; called everyone “Pirates and Thieves”. Nobody cared, he lost a lot all of his brownie points, and I haven’t heard from him since.

“The president has not watched a pirate copy of the film ‘The King’s Speech,’ but rather a special copy provided by the cinema general directorate upon his request,” Çelik wrote on Twitter. This the explanation ??

    • http://www.facebook.com/jamesmcgowan James McGowan

Yes, the Minister of Culture would have likely received a copy by the European Distribution Company that was handling the film.

  • Guezz

“Herhangi bir ?ekilde yasal olmayan bir film zaten bana verilmez. Nas?l geldi?iyle ilgili aç?klamalar da yap?ld?, biliyorsunuz.” he says, meaning:

  • Whatever

The longer it takes to respond …… oh, wait…

I see from some of the above comment that a legal excuse has already been created by the MAFIAA to where he got his copy from.

From all that is known about MAFIAA and politicians, i will keep sceptical until independently proven that he is not a pirate. And it would have to be incredibly good proof because people in those positions have a lot of resources to create proof.

    • DarknessFallz

      Well stated.

  • Asd

i am not sure if he is smart enough to figure out how to use torrent, probably someone in the staff pirated the movie for him…

  • http://disqus.com/ Rob8urcakes

I notice Mrs Abdullah was suspiciously silent during all this, and I wonder if she’s the pirate? After all, you’d think he’d be too busy making up daft rules to block filesharing sites for the masses.

  • Eloh

But… He’s a President… OFC he gets to see movies before they release to the public, just like he sees everything else before it hits the public.

Common sense to me… not at all surprised.

It seems as the people ruling have their films for free, at the same time they put up draconian laws to stop normal people to enjoy the same thing.

One favor for the mighty, and one draconian law for the people..

    This stinks.

So you are saying rip teams like LOL and most of the sites like piratebay etc are Turkish oriented?
You know it is easy to write crap and wrong info about nations. Yes, in Turkey lots of people use pirate, but not a bigger percentage compared to Europe & US.
Also, president Gül (which i do not like personally) stated that he got the copy from Culture Vice President in legal ways. I wouldn’t write lies about him even if i want him down from his position.
And please, update the article with clear, up-to-minute info.

Seems like he is not a pirate. Dammit! Even if he was though it wouldn’t be much of a deal.
When YouTube was blocked in Turkey for the first time, the prime minister said this: “I can access YouTube, there are ways to do that. So why don’t you?”
Apparently, he’s using OpenDNS or something to overcome his own ban (well, not exactly his own, but the state’s, which he’s supposed to be running)

Ex-president from Brazil, Lula had already seen a pirate movie on board of the presidential airplane. The film is named “Dois filhos de Francisco” (Two sons of Francisco). Its about the life of two brazilian singers (Xitaozinho and Xororó).
The fact was reproduced in varios news papers, but as the pirate was the president, thats was ok.

dunno why many believe a president or any rich/powerful ppl wouldn’t download movies (even if they can get them legitimately), it’s a matter of convenience, downloading a movie is much less of a hassle than any other alternative (assuming you have good internet & good viewing setup), these ppl are no different than the rest of us, many software companies use pirated software from other companies, not like they can’t afford a copy, why waste time buying when a keygen/crack is just a keyword away

obviously assuming if he did download the movie (or knew it was from a pirated source), it would be hypocritical for any such person to be an anti-piracy advocate
