uTorrent Plus Goes on Pre-Sale for $24.95

For the first time ever uTorrent users can now pay for their favorite BitTorrent client. BitTorrent Inc. just put a pre-order for the “Plus” version of uTorrent online for $24.95 a year. The official release is scheduled to come out before the holidays. The paid version of uTorrent will offer additional features to the free client, that will continue development as usual.

utorrentWith well over 100 million active users a month, uTorrent is without doubt the most-used BitTorrent client.

Thus far all versions of uTorrent have been free of charge, but earlier this year uTorrent’s parent company announced the forthcoming release of ‘Plus’, a paid version of the client with additional features.

Plus will enable users to convert videos and transfer files to external devices. It also comes with built in anti-virus, remote file-transfers and a built in media player. Today BitTorrent Inc. announced that Plus will be released before the holidays and the client has been put on pre-sale for $24.95 a year.

“uTorrent Plus was specially designed to give our users access to often-requested features. If they are seeking a very easy way to convert files to popular formats to watch on other devices, plus a safer torrenting experience with integrated antivirus (and more), it’s a no-brainer,” BitTorrent spokesperson Allison Wagda told TorrentFreak.

“The free uTorrent client still offers all the essential functionality and continues to receive significant attention from the development team. uTorrent Plus is exactly what its name implies: everything you love about uTorrent *plus* great new features,” she added.

For the San Francisco company uTorrent Plus is a attempt to add an additional revenue stream aside from the money it makes from toolbar installs. How much is guesswork, but considering the target audience they will probably “suffer” a bit from piracy, although we doubt that they will complain much about that.

uTorrent Plus sale

bittorrent

uTorrent is not the first mainstream file-sharing application to be launched with a paid version. Before it was shut down LimeWire sold a pro version, and uTorrent’s main competitor Vuze also sells a pro version of their client for $24.99 which enables users to burn DVDs.

Generally these pro-clients are not targeted towards savvy BitTorrent users, but to relative newcomers who are willing to pay a little bit to make their lives easier. That said, paid BitTorrent clients are certainly not the norm, so it will be interesting to see how uTorrent Plus will be received by the public.

Hey, you’ve got to make money somehow. Developers don’t come cheap, you know.

    • http://profiles.google.com/stuart.anderson Stuart Anderson

The problem with that is that a tax on the clueless isn’t a great business model.

      • Dia

        Why not?

        • http://profiles.google.com/stuart.anderson Stuart Anderson

They are offering a product of (supposed) convenience, not a killer must-have application (it just looks like bloat to me. I won’t be pirating it, let alone paying for it). And clueless or not, people wise up to the feeling that they are not getting value for money pretty quickly. If this truly is what they think their customers want, then they are asking the wrong customers (or questions) IMO.

If it were me, I’d consider trying to make a P2P version of Steam/iTunes. They are both highly profitably businesses that compete with piracy (which, like it or not, is the space that Bittorrent Inc. operates in).

The customer (ie. their behaviour, and access to them) is the most valuable asset that Bittorrent Inc. has in their uTorrent client. Taxing access to those consumers is going to be more profitable than trying to get $25 bucks out of a tiny portion of them.

        • Floppy Copy

Your probably right, Stuart. My perspective is that anything popular one day can just as easily be unpopular the next. It would seem that self destruction is part of human nature, and most likely the reason why we see it repeated so often. A developer who creates something wildly popular will inevitably mess up what made their app a success to begin with. They can never leave well enough alone and just stick primarily to fixing bugs. They often don’t listen to the people using their program either, believing they know best because it is their program. When enough users get fed up and switch, the program begins to die. Updates slowly taper off until they’re simply not done anymore, the developer having moved on to greener pastures in an attempt to create the next killer app. They rarely succeed though, eventually forgotten and delegated to the dustbin of history. So many good applications have died this way. Don’t believe me? Go through each application you’ve installed on your PC, and for each one ask yourself what you used prior to it and why you switched. What amazes me, considering developers are generally smart people, is how they never seem to learn from the experience if they actually are lucky enough to create another successful program. It’s astounding just how blinding greed can be, something we seem to witness almost daily here at TorrentFreak.

To be honest, I stopped being interested in uTorrent news right after I had to roll back to version 2.2.1 with a huge WTF regarding version 3.0.
If anyone knows of any uTorrent developments that are actually worth reading about, please let me know. Otherwise I realize the company has to do something to make money, but to me as a user it makes little difference.

    • Areidt

uTorrent 2.2.1 <– Simply the best. As unbelievable as it may sound, this ultra-thin client is going the bloatware way with a stupidity that was 3.0
Newbies, get uT 2.2.1 & stick with it.

        1.8.5 is fine too

  • http://profiles.google.com/rav3nlabs Toshko Andreev

I’m in the closed testing circle of uTorrent Plus and it offers ABSOLUTELY NOTHING that you would want, neither a “savvy” nor “newbie” user will need it.

And the effortless transfer to other devices (Xbox360, PlayStation3, iPad/iPhone/iPod, Android) doesn’t work 99.9% of the time. The built-in media player is nothing more than integrated WMP.

I think this is silly too but I must point out that you are in a BETA… of COURSE things are not going to work… that’s the whole point of a beta program.

I use uTorrent for downloading torrents only, and recently started using the RSS feed. Don’t feel like I need anything more than that right now. I will still keep using the free version and have no intention of getting any future cracked or paid plus versions.

And how long before we see this piece of shit of mutorrent+ on TPB? Well, there’s already one torrent….
That’s yet another reason not to use that crap close-source shit.
And of course, everybody stupid enough to actually _pay_ for it will be in a file that the worse than nazi cops can access and use against them. And paying just to download freeware or linux distros, it’s even stupider.

I never understood how Bittorrent, Inc. managed to avoid getting sued all these years, since their software links to ‘infringing’ index sites and runs its own decentralized network that connects users to ‘infringing’ files.

Maybe the MAFIAA are taking their time trying to infiltrate the company with moles, and build up a war chest of incriminating statements in stolen memos and emails, before they finally pull the trigger.

    • Oli

Because they don’t solely link to infringing files and BT can, and does, have a wide variety of legitimate and legal uses. MMORPGs (I think) use it, not to mention the stuff artists and labels have allowed to be distributed via BT and the copyright-free/open source/creative commons/PioneerOne stuff.

uTorrent is the best torrent client out there, and it has virtually no competition when it comes to size and ease of use (only Transmission comes to mind, and that’s Mac/Linux only).

Vuze is complete garbage. Its the most bloated piece of software I’ve ever used. Yes, I’ve tried the older version and the newer one, and both are bad in my books.

I’ll have to agree with Paul when it comes to whether or not adding a paid option is justified. To be quite frank, as long as they continue development of the free version and keep it unrestricted, I’ll always stick to uTorrent.

Heck, I may even pay for a 1-year subscription just to encourage them to keep going forward.

And as far as downloading uTorrent Plus from TPB goes, that will likely never happen. These guys pretty much created the BT protocol. I’ll bet they know how to prevent their product from leaking onto it ;D

uTorrent is, as the previously comments rightly pointed out, the best torrent client out there, except of course the ‘unwanted’ features that has sprung up in the latest versions. Lite weight, with minimum footprint, doing what it does best, downloading torrents.

Adding features in order to sell a ‘Plus’ version, that was inevitable. You can’t sustain for long on just praise and fan following in the capitalist society of ours. Words aren’t worth a dime, and you need a huge chunk of them to pay for developers.

Even then many of the features promised in the ‘Plus’ version are things we can have for free, as in open-source software and/or freewares. Many a deliberations would have happened behind those closed doors for this version, hours spent by people much more knowledgeable then me. But what I fail to understand is how come they thought people would buy the ‘Plus’ version in its current avatar?

Instead of trying and selling the bones of the elephant man to the masses using uTorrent, they could have instead targeted the corporations. Where is that groundbreaking live p2p streaming protocol they were working on? Or the fact that Facebook uses torrent protocol to synchronize its servers?

I, for one, feel the company should rethink its strategies in terms of generating its profits. Asking money for unneeded features isn’t one of them.

This is bullsh*t! At that price you can get at least 6 months of seedbox. The only feature I’m ready to pay for in a bittorrent client is: Privacy.
1-Virus protection is a scam. I’ve never seen a virus on bittorrent since 2004.
2-There are free tools to convert video files. Most Android can read by default a lot of video format and codecs.
3- Transferring files onto a device is easy as sh*t, if you need a Plus version to do that, you should not use bittorrent
4-Video player integration? Double clicking on the downloaded files is that hard?

So, do you really need that? I don’t even think it’s worth pirating.

I’m happy for the guys at µTorrent, but I, for one, won’t be getting this. I can see why people would want to – it’s a load easier than having separate software for the stuff, but I can, and will, argue that if you’re using BitTorrent, you already have a video player, anti-virus software and can transfer files between devices (no shit) so their features are unnecessary, considering their audience. But they gotta pay the bills somehow, so I wish them the best of luck.

  • Guest

“What kind of shit can we throw into this program to justify charging money for it?”

    • Ven

You can either give people stuff they don’t need, or restrict from the free client the stuff they’ve always used.

Neither work well with competition on the market.

  • Xdevilx11

At this time, paying for those features are taking advantage of new users who are unfamiliar with torrenting in general, almost like paying for a parking lot when there is free parking on the street around the corner; you need to walk a little further but you pay for convenience.

utorrent has been a reliable and great program to use for as long as I’ve been using it, they need to pay to their bills somehow and this is a way for them to find some sort of income.

If they integrated a vpn or other privacy method into the plus version, that is the only way I could justify paying for it.

All in all I’m a big fan of utorrent and am very thankful for them doing what they’ve been doing :)

  • Chris

    UTorrent v 1.8.3
Format Factory to file convert (not necessary)
    drag’n'drop files to external HD
auto-load torrent files from dropbox (from android/netbook/anywhere)
er, why would I want paid again?

  • hiro

    OK, my 2 cents:

Drop those “apps” and all this other newfangled stuff, forget about “plus” features for $$$, keep it small, simple and fast, just the way we’re used to – then, and only then, you will receive a Paypal donation from me. As soon as I find the Paypal button on your web site, of course. I might even flattr you, if you were flattrable.

With this split into “free” and “paid” versions, you will get a few paying customers, a few who will turn to other software just out of spite, and a huge number of people constantly asking themselves how long their “free” version will remain “free” and what stupid bloat features will be transferred from the “plus” version, and if it might not be a better idea to turn to other software while they’re at it.

Just ask for money. We will give it to you voluntarily. You do not have to destroy a good piece of software for that.

Why is it that all companies think “hooray, our product is number 1, now let’s change everything”? Why are management people always so eager to copy stuff from their competition who came second, i.e., proven losers? Happens every time. I just don’t get it.

    • Ven

“Hooray our product is number 1!”

“Then why aren’t we making more money?”

  • Anonymous

I would consider purchasing this option if reviewers of the software can agree on it being more useful than other alternatives that might come cheaper or free. But the fact that I would love to support the uTorrent team would also be highly influential on my decision.

  • Aaa

I would never pay for extra bloatware. (Not even worth the download)
If they made a version more like transmission it would be worth paying for it…

  • foff

They took the wrong road. Privacy is the number one concern. Some kind of integrated seed box network would be worth such a fee the other stuff is just crap that is around by the bushel full. If you had integrated seedboxes and an independent integrated dns server in the network so that dns blocking by the isp is rendered useless and privacy is guaranteed then you would have a product worth paying for.

  • noko

Ask for donations with the provision that the money will be used to keep the service free. That way those involved can pays themselves a decent wage out of the donations and the rest can go to maintaining the service for free.

Omg stop complaining, if you dont want to buy it you have the choice not to. This is just a way for the company to get a little more revenue. $25/year is hardly breaking the bank, I dont see why everyones up in arms..

    • Prick

    • Taishou

Indeed. The shit is still free, why so much hate? The guys need to get “something to eat” after all they done. Although I agree that a VPN service or something with more value would be better, even if that means maintaining another/more service[s]. Find the correct pricing for it to be profitable enough, it doesn’t seem impossible. Maybe even along these “n00b” releases, “pro” gimmicks for the little guys and VPN and more advanced stuff for the savvy.

This is most likely a “cheap” solution to get some money and I can’t blame them. I wouldn’t mind buying it (not for using plus, just for sake of donating) if the currency of my stupid country wasn’t worth shit. I’ve been using uTorrent for way too long now, as long as they keep the “classic” free version without fucking it (toolbars are fine, just never install them xD) I won’t mind if they release plus/super/ultra/m3g4h4x versions.

If only 1% of Utorrent users pay for pro that is a nice chunk of cash, just like the tool bar it is just another source of income; it only become a problem if they start to marginalise the free version & it’s users. I agree the pro version offers nothing to anyone with any savvy but there are a lot of people out who do not or who are too lazy/busy to get the extra features by other means & will pay. The question is will the developers play fair & keep the free version supported, if they are clver they will because if not some clever soul will create a replacement!

Its to generate a money trail people! You bind someone to a financial transaction online you have an identity. pirate utorrent plus? Its a subscription service for AV, etc. You can pirate the client, good luck getting a valid username/password without paying.
Personally I wouldnt buy it, but im not the target market. Good on bram n co for making a ”commercial’ client for n00bs.

Can’t you just torrent the paid version of uTorrent?

    • Guest

      It doesn’t offer nothing new.

      • Elitist Not

Yeah, it doesn’t seem to offer anything new from what I have read. I’m looking for security, anonymity and encryption.

          - encrypt your hard disk
          - use a VPN

This will be pirated just like everything else.

The best utorrent will always be the first few original releases. Single .exe file, no installer it just was click and run. Small and fast that is what folks want. They downloaded a torrent client, not a player, streamer, torrent rater, etc… Come on guys can the crap. Users want small fast and works extras equate to bloat and there is nothing you’re going to add that will hold a candle to dedicated app doing the same thing so why bother? It is more important to be great at one thing as opposed to 1/2 assed at several. Ever heard the saying jack of all trades master of none? Seems to apply here.

  • Tit Head

Nice one, a torrent client you have to pay for? I’ll download it through torrents for free. Dick-ends.

Will be interested in a paid uTorrent program only when there is a well functioning proxy service attached.

is the installer size still small? basically they added something like ffmpeg and antivirus integration.

we once thought of adding antivirus integration to frostwire but it didn’t make sense once we started implementing, all you gotta do is install any antivirus software on your computer, the moment a file will be accessed your antivirus software will kick in (so we ended up having a redundant useless experience).

as for ffmpeg, easy as pie to add, and we’ll still be free.
