Warner Bros. Recruits Students to Spy on Pirates

Warner Bros Entertainment UK is recruiting tech-savvy students to help the company with their anti-piracy efforts. During the 12 month internship the students will have to maintain accounts at private BitTorrent sites, develop link-scanning bots, make trap purchases and perform various other anti-piracy tasks.

warner brosThe people who work at the anti-piracy divisions of Warner Bros. and other large media companies have to be experts in file-sharing technology. It is therefore no surprise that Warner Bros. is actively recruiting students for a job as Anti-Piracy Intern, as most students have grown up sharing files.

Warner Bros Entertainment UK is currently offering an internship to “IT literate” students with knowledge of file-sharing networks to assist in the company’s ongoing anti-piracy efforts. The internship deals with both digital and physical piracy and among other things the applicant will have to make trap purchases and maintain accounts at private file-sharing sites.

The intern will further have to scour the Internet for illegally posted Warner Bros. and NBC Universal content and gather intelligence on the sites that offer these pirated goods. One of the more boring tasks listed in the job description is the sending of takedown requests and infringement notices to sites and users.

The full job description taken from the vacancy (pdf) at The University of Manchester reads as follows:

During the 12 month internship, duties will include: monitoring local Internet forums and IRC for pirated WB and NBCU content and in order to gather information on pirate sites, pirate groups and other pirate activities; finding new and maintaining existing accounts on private sites; scanning for links to hosted pirated WB and NBCU content and using tools to issue takedown requests; maintaining and developing bots for Internet link scanning system (training provided); preparing sending of infringement notices and logging feedback; performing trap purchases of pirated product and logging results; inputting pirate hard goods data and other intelligence into the forensics database; selecting local keywords and submitting local filenames for monitoring and countermeasure campaigns and periodically producing research documents on piracy related technological developments. Various training will be provided.

The lucky student who gets the job will receive a £17,500 salary for the 12 month internship that starts July 2010. Applicants are required to study a degree in a computing related discipline and programming experience with Java or JSP and PHP, Perl or Python is seen as a bonus.

We encourage all eligible TorrentFreak readers to apply for this exciting internship and provide us with regular updates on Warner Bros’ anti-piracy efforts. You have to be quick though, the vacancy closes on March 31.

This is interesting because many sites that they use will have agreements to get into and sign up to.

Now if these students brake these agreements that means they get into trouble not warner bros.

And for anyone that says you can not get into trouble because the places these students are signing up to are braking the law well your wrong. Firstly nearly all of them are not braking the law as it is currently set and secondly you can not brake the law because someone else is braking the law as well.

Anyhow anyone been found out as been employed for doing this well i would not like to be them.

Hmm, this is worrying in my eyes. Think about the potential of angry torrent/download site owners out, they get shut down whilst other sites prospered..

It may be a negative way to look at it, but the worst thing in my mind is for a rogue webmaster to pop-up and start exploiting sites.

Peter’s right, most graduate IT jobs outside London in the UK start at £12-15k (not an internship, that’s a full-time job)

They do rise to £20K+ when you’ve got 6 months commercial experience but usually you have to either wait a year for a pay raise or go work for another company

  • djnforce9

While the idea of getting a “mole” into the recording industry sounds promising. The question is whether a student will want to sacrifice for our benefit as Warner will not be too happy if the student is leaking information to the public. They may even be extremely conservative as to what they disclose to this student for that exact reason.

I for one would never lend my computing skills to them no matter what.

Not to mention that the traffic will be followed (I do presume that one won’t be working from home ;)) and I’m sure that these employees won’t be allowed to leak information to the public.

I am a pirate, and I would take this job. I’d only REALLY go after physical piracy (because that involves actual profit and exchange of money, and is the only way to make a “trap purchase” anyway). I might be interested in pruning shitty sites, because I’d have to do something, and while I’d rather leave them all up, I’d also rather keep the job. Besides, losing a bad site helps create availability for newer, better sites.

If only there was a vacancy in my area. I’m quite qualified.

Apply the model to sending data packets and who knows! Will investigate Darknet – if I can find it. lol. not an internet expert.

  • Seth

Yeah, like any student would want to work AGAINST piracy. Most of us have grown up in an age where we have seen movie prices literally triple while the media itself gets that much cheaper. People SHOULD pirate, because it’s inexcusable to charge $26+ for a god damn movie in this day and age, especially considering 75% of new releases are absolute garbage, and movies cannot be returned. The multimedia industry has created what some might say is a monopoly of information; the only legal place to get it is through them, and there is no way to receive ANY compensation if you are dissatisfied. This just makes me sick.

  • jcm

you’re missing the point: those students need to be p2p experts, and they don’t teach that in schools. they learned p2p because they like it… so they’lll probably be uploading some nice exclusive shit soon… hehehe

£17,500 for pirating, leaking Warner Bros info, and getting the low quality/infected stuff removed? Why can’t I live in the bloody UK.

  • 17.5K going 1, 2, 3, sold

Guys, are you forgetting who these guys are? They are in the business of suing as much as they’re in the business of making movies. They’d even sue dead people if they could, of wait, they already have.

I’m guessing that after and if you get through the interviews and possibly an assessment center where you’ll prove your enthusiasm in protecting their rights to their mansions, solemnly swear that some people are born with the natural right to drive nine Rolls-Royce phantoms, buy private islands like peanuts and sue everyone to pay for it; you’d be presented with a contract, data-protection agreement and possible a non-disclosure agreement, after which you’ll join the “we’ll sue their ass into oblivion” working group to ensure that every opportunity like Haiti earthquake is taken advantage of to blame and sue pirates.

Talk about your “job” to a friend and you may find out that those contracts you signed earlier have magical powers in making your life as miserable as the lives of people you’ve already ruined by selling your soul out.

If they join and download/share they’re breaking the law in turn and therefore they will have no feet to stand on in court, so to speak. Therefore the employees will most likely be facing a jail term. Although, if they join then download/share with WBros permission people whom download from them have the right to as they have provided the content for sharing.

In order to fight an enemy, you must know all its secrets & how it works. To all the geeks out there who loves file sharing, I say apply for the internship & learn how these big companies are trying to stop p2p; so we can beat them in their own game by devaloping new ways to counter their stratgies.

The easiest way to counter these strategies is to compile dossiers on those who apply and then use that information to confront the subject of the dossier. In short “If subject X accepts the position at Warner Brothers, then his or her life will become a very, very public living hell. Else, he or she is left alone.”

Won’t this technically mean they have to download themselves to maintain accounts at private site seeing as most private sites require you to keep a good ratio and an active account…
…not to mention is this not some form of entrapment???

  • TRYER

Anyone from The University of Manchester that can take a note or the “made it list” and get a list of those Warner Spys names?

I would if I was their.

Yes, it does mean that they’ll have to download content themselves. That’s easy to get around though, since they’ll most likely only be uploading/downloading WB content, and even if they don’t… well, they aren’t obligated to include themselves in any lawsuits they launch. It’s one of many ways how corporations can exploit laws while getting around them at the same time. Second, that’s not entrapment. Entrapment can only be leveled (as far as I know) against law enforcement undertaking these types of action. Since it’s private citizens, it doesn’t count.

Strangely enough, in most cases a simple amendment to private trackers’ TOS would halt a lot of these types of prosecutions int heir tracks.

the programme has been going on for years for any retards who think its a new job.

The programme does work. ive seen the effects…alot of dodgy creditcards, fake addresses and internet bots + 1 hell of alot of trolling private sites.

dont be afraid…its always a nerdy guy who gets the job

RIAA and whoever, you can do all that and catch all the people you want, but nobody is going to pay cause we don’t have any money or assets, you stupid idiots. You fuckers can own all the rights to whatever you want and people are still going to take and use what they want the same as always. Oh, poor little babies aren’t making any money…but somehow Avatar out sold every movie ever. Kiss my ass.

Ironically, if Warner Brothers and the MAFIAA actually does get a bunch of mildly retarded British IT kids to do this, they’ll be losing more money than if they just let people torrent this stuff. But then again, in the MAFIAA world, a $30 movie is a multi-million dollar lawsuit.

You do realise the salary listed is in POUNDS not DOLLARS?? Converted to USD is more like $30,000 – not overly shabby for an INTERNSHIP… most pay a lot less than that!

As appalling as it is, that kind of money will no doubt attract those IT-kids who happily file-share but are not that strong in the whole p2p/bit-torrent ethos (let’s face it, how many Gen-Y’ers have an attention span greater than that of a sand-fly??)

@113 – you do realise that America has one of the LOWEST average IT-Literacy rates in the developed world? Stop throwing stones… that glass house of yours would likely crash down around your ears via the return volley!!
